TYPED MANUSCRIPT LEAF SIGNED, The final paragraphs of "The Americanism of Washington", signed in full by the author HENRY VAN DYKE.

Circa, [1906]., [1906].. Good. - sc - Over 145 words typed on a 5-1/2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of creamy white paper. The number "-17-" is centered at the top of the page. The word "draft" is penned in blue crayon at top left of the page and there are a couple of correction marks in pencil, typed corrections, and two words corrected in ink by the author. Signed in full "Henry van Dyke" in black ink below the text with the annotation "-c-" denoting his copyright, beneath his signature. This typed signed manuscript leaf is mounted with glue along the left edge onto a sheet of 7 inch high by 5 inch wide watermarked paper which was once likely bound into a book. The manuscript leaf is soiled and folded vertically down the middle. There is a small hole to the top left corner and another tiny pin-like hole at right between the third and fourth line of type. The signature is strong and bold. <p>A substantial portion of the final paragraph of Henry Van Dyke's great patriotic work. " in our power lies, the fountain of our national life from political, commercial and social corruption ; to teach our sons and daughters, by precept and example, the honour of serving such a country as America.... For high in the firmament of human destiny are set the stars of faith in mankind, and unselfish courage, and loyalty to the ideal ; and while these shine the spirit and the hope of Washington and the men who stood with him shall never, never die."<p>Together with a secretarial letter, typed on his 6-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide personal stationery with "H.v.D. / Avalon, / Princeton, N.J." embossed at the top. The letter, in which the author mentions sending a photograph and that he will soon forward a copy of the address which he will deliver on University Day, was "dictated Feb. 2, 1906" and signed "Henry van Dyke" by his secretary.<p>Henry Van Dyke's oration was first delivered on Washington's birthday in 1906 at the University of Pennsylvania. It was published soon thereafter.

Montevideo: Talleres Gráficos Juan Fernández 1906 - Chromolithograph, originally varnished and mounted on original linen, rolled (Good, some minor stains and even crackling to varnish, with small chips of surface loss in lower area, largely outside of main map area, small hole in lower blank margin, old tack marks along blank margins, still decent condition for a map of its kind), 111.5 x 157 cm (44 x 62 inches). Extremely rare &#150; Saturnino Cortesi&#146;s large wall map of Montevideo, the authoritative official city plan of the Uruguayan capital made at the height of its golden era. Upon this large and detailed wall map of Montevideo, one can witness the city&#146;s explosive growth unfold in grand style, right before one&#146;s very eyes. This official plan, sponsored by the Uruguayan government, was drafted by the geographer Saturnino Cortesi, to provide the ultimate overview of Montevideo during the height of its golden era boom of the early 20th Century. Fuelled by sustained economic growth and immigration, the city was expanding, rapidly building new barrios, boulevards, grand squares, monumental edifices and the most modern infrastructure, all of which are detailed on the map. The map embraces the entire Department of Montevideo, with rapid development emanating out of the city and bay area in the lower centre of the map, with the rural areas extending into the interior. The &#145;Referencias&#146;, in the lower right corner, detail the stages of development across the different barrios and new suburbs, including: &#145;Manzanas Edificadas&#146; (fully built-up urban blocks &#150; coloured in grey); &#145;Manzanas Edificadas en Parte&#146; (partially built-up urban blocks - coloured in pink); &#145;Edificios Públicos&#146; (public buildings - coloured in red): as well as aspects of infrastructure, such as &#145;Ferro Carril&#146; (railway lines - in black intermittent lines); &#145;Caminos de Macadam ó Empredados&#146; (Completed paved roads - in bold orange lines); &#145;Caminos de Macadam en Construccion&#146; (Paved roads under construction - in intermittent orange lines); and &#145;Limites de las secciones judiciales&#146; (boundaries of judicial districts - in grey lines, with the districts numbered in grey). Around 1904, the Uruguayan government commissioned the geographer Saturnino Cortesi to create an authoritative master plan of the Montevideo Department, based on the most up-to-date information from the various official urban planning offices, corporate blueprints and archives. Cortesi&#146;s manuscript was edited by Juan Fernández, with the result being chromolithographed by his firm in Montevideo. The map was to be used by government agencies and private enterprises as the authoritative guide to the city, not only as it existed, but also to manage the dramatic developments that the Montevideo region was to undergo over the coming years. Importantly, the present map is the natural corollary of Saturnino Cortesi & Anibal Méndez&#146;s official national map, Mapa de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay construida con datos Existentes en el archivo de la ex-direccion general des obras publicas, archivos particulares datos tomados en el terreno y antecedentes suministrados por las autoridades locales y proprietarios de tierras (Montevideo: La Minerva, 1903). The present map is extremely rare. We cannot trace any sales records, nor any examples in institutions in North America or Europe. The Road to the Rise of Montevideo - San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo was founded in 1724 by the Spanish on a fine natural harbour on the north side of the Río de la Plata Estuary. Initially populated by fifty families from Galicia and the Canary Islands, Montevideo was intended to be a simple buffer fortress to keep the Portuguese, from Brazil, out of the area, preserving Spain&#146;s control over Buenos Aires and the Estuary. Over the coming decades, the town experienced steady growth, as mariners preferred Montevideo&#146;s harbour to that of Buenos Aires, causing a rivalry between the two cities. In 1776, Montevideo received a great boost when it was selected as the Armada Real&#146;s principal naval b

Edges as issued - top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. Front board blind stamp ruled and illustrated, spine gilt titled. Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs and sketches by the author, and nine full color reproductions from paintings by Russell W. Porter and J. Knowles Hare. Large fold out map tipped in at rear. Evidence of a removed bookplate or other item to front pastedown with four dried glue spots and a vertical line about 1/4 inch wide and 7 ins high where surface of paper has been lifted. Pasted-in photo (photogravure?) bears the handwritten greeting "A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year / Anthony Fiala" all in blue ink. The image appears to have been professionally retouched to enhance contrast. Transparent tape has been added to corners and centre top and bottom of photo - which is also pasted in - below the epigraph. Map is clean, bright and complete with a 1 1/4 inch closed vertical tear along third crease line and a repaired 6 inch horizontal tear on the left side. Repair appears to have been made with Japanese paper and rice paste which has preserved paper and color. Faint foxing on map itself and a some minor but more noticeable foxing on two pages preceding map. Fiala's own account of the expedition planned and funded by William Ziegler for whom Fiala had been photographer on a previous expedition and to whom this book is dedicated, Ziegler having died just eighteen months before it's publication. The explorers never reached the North Pole, their ship America broke up and their prOvisions were lost. One of the company died before a rescue ship arrived some two years later but the rest, including Fiala, survived and returned to the U.S. Some nine years after his rescue Fiala accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on an expedition into unexplored regions of Brazil. Later in his eventful life Fiala gave illustrated lectures on these and other adventures. He is remembered as an explorer, photographer and graphic artist of considerable merit.

        THE JUNGLE

New York: The Jungle Publishing Company, 1906. Green cloth, stamped in black and white, with pictorial vignette and clasped hands device on upper cover. A bit of rubbing to the spine costing a modest amount of the white enamel stamping, gilt morocco collector's bookplate on pastedown a bit offset opposite, some modest foxing at the top edge of the front endsheet and pastedown toward the gutter, but a very good copy, far better than the norm. Somewhat faded cloth slipcase and chemise. First edition, the so-called "Sustainer's Edition," with the special bookplate on the pastedown, proclaiming this one of 5000 such copies, and the SP Emblem on the upper cover. These copies also display the earlier readings on pages 42 and 82. Tipped to the front free endsheet is a 1 September 1943 typed letter, signed, from Sinclair on his Monrovia letterhead, pertaining to the simultaneous publication of the Sustainer's issue and the Doubleday issue. Although both were printed by Doubleday, the Sustainer's issue is significantly less common than the analogous Doubleday issue. The most influential work of American fiction of its generation, though hardly for the reason Sinclair intended, it having made its impression on many of its readers' gastrointestinal tracts rather than on their sense of justice and compassion for fellow human beings. It is a work of fiction that, once read, is never forgotten. RIDEOUT, p.292. ADAMS, p.59. HANNA 3234. AHOUSE A7b. SIX-SCORE 95. JOHNSON HIGHSPOT. SMITH S-509.

Milano: G. Ricordi & Co., [1906]. First Edition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Opera completa per Canto e Pianoforte. Riduzione di Carlo Carignani. [PN] 95567. 264 pp. Ricordi blind stamp of 1906. Marbled boards, 1/4 leather with raised ribs, gilt, and stamping on spine. Minor edge wear, minor rubbing to leather spine, previous owner inscription on second free end page. Very Good, clean text, secure binding, supple pages, sharp and bright gilt and stamping along spine.<br><br /><br><br />A rare edition which corresponds to the pagination of Hopkinson's Fourth Version (3D) and to no other recorded edition, but with significant differences from Hopkinson's description. Chiefly, the present Act IV does not revert to the second version as Hopkinson describes. Suzanne Scherr ("Editing Puccini's Operas: The Case of 'Manon Lescaut,'" Acta Musicologica Vol. 62, p. 65) also records only Hopkinson's edition of 264 pages with this plate number, but notes that Hopkinson "was deceived by dissimilar versions with similar covers and number of pages," and that "while his bibliography lists six versions, eight versions of this opera have been found." The present edition, with a blindstamp that dates it to between the Hopkinson Fourth and Fifth Versions, is apparently an unrecorded version. <br><br /><br><br />Manon Lescaut was Puccini's third opera and his first great success. It premiered in 1893 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy and soon earned him his reputation as a successor to Verdi. Puccini prepared numerous versions of the opera for publication, and while the musical differences between the first and second versions are relatively minor, there were major rewrites and edits in the susequent published versions.

        The Cricket of the Hearth.

London: J. M. Dent,, 1906. A Tale of Home. With illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo (178 x 113 mm). Contemporary art nouveau-style vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath, hand-painted crest design of holly branches to front board and spine, the former framed within mother-of-pearl onlay, title to front board and spine in red on a light green background, front board elaborately tooled in gilt, single gilt fillet to rear board, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, double gilt fillet to turn-ins with fleuron cornerpieces. Illustrated title page, colour frontispiece and 7 other plates, black and white illustrations in the text. 1930s prize label to front pastedown. Spine a little darkened, small glue residue to front free endpaper, light spotting to endleaves. An excellent copy. A fine vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers, delicately embellished with mother-of-pearl. The vellucent technique was developed by Cedric Chivers in the early 1900s. In contrast to the earlier method used by Edwards of Halifax, the painting was not done on the underside of the transparent vellum, but on paper which was attached to the binding and covered with vellum. The surface of the vellum was then tooled in gold, thus enhancing the impressive effect.

Biedermeier-Zierat. Zu Haben in Plaven i.V. bei Christian Stoll

Portfolio of 24 full-color plates depicting Biedermeier-inspired ornamental motifs for interior decorating, including wallpaper designs, botanical and floral images, and geometric patterns, many with visible Art Nouveau influence. Some very minor soiling, plates in brilliant colors. Square folio. Orig. publisher's printed boards, some soiling, bumping especially to corners, ribbon tie closure torn. Plauen, Germany (Christian Stoll) n.d. (circa 1906). The Biedermeier style was popular in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, and is applied to visual arts and interior design together with other fields including literature and music. At this time, the middle class was growing and creating a new audience for the arts and home goods, and a new emphasis on home life meant a blossoming in the areas of furniture design and interior decoration. The style is a simplified version of the French Empire style and is characterized by clean lines and minimal ornamentation, although it progressed to ornate pieces commissioned by the rising middle class eager to show off their newfound wealth before returning to a more utilitarian form later on. As of August 2016, WorldCat locates three holdings in North American institutions.

        Rare Autograph Musical Quotation

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare AMQS from the important Italian concert pianist, teacher, and author of etudes, penned in the last year of his life. On a postcard bearing his portrait, Cesi has penned the beginning of one of his demanding piano studies, marked Presto, complete with fingerings and expressive marks. He has signed and dated in rather shaky writing: Naples, April 1906. On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño. In fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14.2 x 9.4 cm).<br style="">Born in Naples, Cesi began his studies with his father, and later with Luigi Albanesi. He was heard by Sigismund Thalberg, who was so impressed with him that he made him one of his favourite pupils. He began his career as a concert performer in 1862 and quickly gained a reputation in Italy. At the age of 20 he won a competition to gain the position of piano professor at the Royal Conservatorio of San Pietro a Majella in Naples. When Anton Rubinstein was appointed director of the Petrograd Conservatory, he invited Cesi to direct the pianoforte schools there. Cesi accepted the appointment in 1885, remaining until 1891, when he was forced to return to Italy owing to a paralysis which had set in. This, however, left his intellect unimpaired and still gave him the use of his right hand, and in 1894 he became a teacher in the Conservatory at Palermo, and after a few years there he was able to return to Naples Conservatory, where he remained in charge of a chamber-music class until his death in 1907. His educational writings (Method for Pianoforte) had considerable importance, and he wrote many volumes of revision of piano music. Among his notable pupils were Giuseppe Martucci, Alessandro Longo, Michele Esposito, Samuel Maykapar, and Leopoldo Mugnone.<br>

The "Little Folks" Plays Containing Cinderella, Rumplestiltzkin and Dummling

London, Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell and Company, 1906 - "Little Folks"[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. BROWNE, Maggie. HILL, Miranda. The "Little Folks" Plays Containing Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin and Dummling. How to get up a Children's Play. By Miranda Hill and Maggie Browne. Illustrated. London, Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell and Company, Limited, 1906. First edition in book form (first published as a single play "Cinderella" in 1903). Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 185 x 121 mm.). [1-3], 4-48, [1], 4-30, [33], 34-48, [5-9], 10-48 pp. Two full-page color plates and two full-page black and white drawings by Arthur Rackham. Four other full-page color plates and several black and white drawings by H.R. Millar and others.Publisher's blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in dark brown and lettered in dark brown and gilt. Spine lettered in dark brown, plain end-papers. Expertly rebacked with the original cloth spine laid-down. An excellent copy. The strange pagination does not account for the apparently intentional stubs left by the publisher, which, when counted, gives continuous numbers. The book, though, is complete in spite of the quirky pagination; it has been compared with the few other known copies as a check for completeness. The publication date has been taken from Riall, as well as the copy in the University of Texas Libraries, which has a 1906 inscription as well as bound in publisher's advertisements dated August, 1906 (though this is in a variant tan binding). 'Cinderella" is a very early illustrated work by Arthur Rackham, first appearing in the Little Folks monthly in November and December of 1897. This is its first appearance in book form. Counting the frontispiece, there are two full color full page plates, and two full page black and white plates. "Rumpelstiltzkin and Dimmling" is illustrated with 2 color plates and 3 black and white plates. "Rumpelstiltzkin" is illustrated by H. R. Millar; it apparently appeared in book form in 1903, but one of the plates is dated '94. The final work, "How to Get Up a Children's Play" is illustrated with line drawings and two unsigned full color plates. A very early and really scarce Rackham, whose career is usually dated from 1894. His Cinderella is significantly different form the illustrations in his later work.In over fifty years of specializing in the work of Arthur Rackham I have never seen this title before (DJB).According to OCLC there is one copy of the single play Cinderella (1903) at Cambridge University (GB) and just six copies of the 1906 edition (University of Southern California; Yale University Library; University of Michigan Library; University of Minnesota; Free Library of Philadelphia, and University of Texas, Austin.Gettings, p. 175 (1903 Cinderella); Hamilton, p. 188 (1903 edition); Hudson, p. 175 (1906 edition); Riall, p. 55; Not in Latimore and Haskell.         Edurard Thöny: Halbwelt (Originalzeichnung)

      - Tusche (Pinsel, Feder, Spritztechnik) und Deckweiß auf Papier. 43,5 x 33 cm.
