        WILSON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE

Philadelphia: Benerman & Wilson, 1906. First editions. 4tos., variable paginations, illustrated with engravings and photogravures. An original mounted photographic frontispiece or a photomechanical plate in each of the biweekly issues. 13 bound volumes, as follows: Volume 26, 1889 through Volume 36, 1899, with Volume 40, 1903 and Volume 43, 1906. The first 11 volumes are bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper over board, t.e.g., and were acquired from the British Patent office, and bear their stamp throughout, often extending into the photograph. Hinges show moderate wear and rubbing. The volumes for 1903 and 1906 have been newly rebound in cloth over boards and have no ex-library markings. Very good. The first year of this title was 1889. In its earlier iteration as The Philadelphia Photographer and under the current title, Edward L. Wilson published the finest photographic magazine in America, dedicated to the advancement of the professional photographer through articles, reviews, illustrations and formulae. Alternating issues either had for the frontispiece an original albumen, or gas light photographs, or a photogravure, or other photomechanical process until 1896, when all frontispieces were photomechanical. WILSON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE is a continuation of The Philadelphia Photographer; therefore, (Vol.1) 1889 is numbered Vol. 26; it ceased under this title in December 1914, when it was purchased by Thomas Coke Watkins, and continues as The Photographic Journal of America.

Contemporary red half morocco, spines gilt tooled on the raised bands, red pebble-grain cloth sides, top edges gilt, untrimmed, marbled endpapers. 318 gravure plates (with captioned tissue guards) by Lilian M. Medland, 2 folding coloured maps; title pages printed in red & black. Spines lightly sunned and with a few marks. A very good set. First edition. Stonham (1858-1916) "was senior surgeon to the Westminster Hospital... [and] was decorated for services in South Africa as chief surgeon and officer commanding the Imperial Yeomanry Field Hospital". The illustrator, Lilian Medland (1880-1955) has been described by the National Library of Australia as "much-overlooked but brilliant". "With a privileged upbringing, educated at home by a governess, the adventurous young Lilian also had the opportunity to walk in Scotland and travel abroad, enjoying mountain climbing, skiing and skating in Switzerland and Austria, and sketching wherever she happened to be. At 16, she began nursing training at Guy's Hospital in London. Here, fortuitously the leading surgeon... Charles Stonham, a keen ornithologist, noticed her sketching ability and encouraged her, setting her on her second and lifelong career. Stonham was compiling a major work, The Birds of the British Islands... Medland's drawings reveal keen and accurate observation. Where possible she showed birds in lifelike attitudes... Owls and raptors were always her favourites and her paintings proclaim the drama of their power" (Christobel Mattingley, Seen but Not Heard: Lilian Medland's Birds, 2014, pp. 9-10). In 1923 Medland married the conchologist and ornithologist Tom Iredale and they moved to Sydney, Australia.

Writings & Life Without Principle Manuscript Leaf Edition

Houghton Mifflin, Boston 1906 - Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906. Near Fine. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906. Near Fine. Numbered 217/600, 20 volume set by Houghton Mifflin (signed by publisher) and issued with an inset leaf of original manuscript from Life without Principle. Unlike most manuscript sets, this has an iconic leaf: several of the most memorable passages (over 350 words in ink and pencil) from Thoreau's famous essay Life Without Principle. Written in 1854, at the time Walden was being published. Thoreau anticipated getting lecture invitations based on Walden, and this was to be his most important statement on work, money, and the purpose of life. Thoreau finished revisions of the essay (including on this leaf) very near his death. The essay was originally published in Atlantic Magazine in 1863. Robert Richardson, in his wonderful biography of Thoreau, states that the essay is "a jeremiad against both the Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism." The passages in this leaf are justly famous: "The ways by which you may get money almost without exception lead downward. To have done anything by which you earned money merely is to have been truly idle or worse. If the laborer gets no more than the wages which his employer pays him, he is cheated, he cheats himself. If you would get money as a writer or lecturer, you must be popular, which is to go down perpendicularly. Those services which the community will most readily pay for, it is the most disagreeable to render. You are paid for being something less than a man. The State does not commonly reward a genius any more wisely. Even the poet laureate would rather not have to celebrate the accidents of royalty. [Paragraph break] As for my own business, even that kind of surveying which I could do with most satisfaction my employers do not want. They would prefer that I should do my work coarsely and not too well, ay, not well enough. [Paragraph break] The aim of the laborer should be, not to get his living, to get "a good job," but to perform well a certain work; and, even in a pecuniary sense, it would be economy for a town to pay its laborers so well that they would not feel that they were working for low ends, as for a livelihood merely, but for scientific, or even moral ends. Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for love of it. [Paragraph break] [unpublished] Commonly, if a temple is to be built, the work goes to the lowest bidder. It would be wiser to give it to the highest bidder. The question is not how the work may be well, only cheaply done. [pencil] But the fault is as much with workers as with employers. [paragraph break] [In pencil] If a man walk in the woods for love of them half of each day and see his fellows [illegible phrase] he is esteemed a loafer; but if he spends his whole day as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making earth bald before her time, he is esteemed an industrious and enterprising citizen." In The Literary Manuscripts of Henry David Thoreau, William Howarth explains that Houghtin Mifflin purchased "bundles of loose manuscripts, already used by printers in making some of Thoreau's earliest volumes." Not surprisingly, most of the these manuscripts were from the Journal, four volumes of which Houghtin Mifflin had alread published in its "seasons" series (spring, summer, autumn, winter). Sets with book or essay manuscript pages are thus scarcer, and sets with quotable manuscript passages are rarest of all. The 20 volume set itself is bound in the usual buckram with minor wear. The paper labels on the spines have some chipping, but the contents are beautifully clean. The leaf is clean and pristine, not a hint of wear. An extremly desirable leaf in a set crying out for a fine binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Barritt-Serviss Star and Planet Finder Northern Hemisphere.

New York & Brooklyn, NY: Maria Barritt, Sky Map, 244 Adams St.; American Museum, Hayden Planetarium, c.1906; 1947, 1955. The Heavens without a Telescope, the only Practical Combination, Star, Planet, and Sun and Moon Map ? [together with;] Planet Tables, Moon Phases and the Sun's Daily Position; [&] Star Explorer, Revised Edition [planisphere]. Three items. Large elaborate planisphere (382 x 382 mm), composed of die-cut lithograph printed outer card, with die-cut, hemispheric celestial map volvelle disk, mounted on black decorative silk moiré board, pinned by brass central rivet, and decorative brass brads in each corner, preserved with original brass hanger, and tan cardboard shipping case: with landscape octavo pamphlet, 16-pages unpaginated, with tables, in quarter-width red printed wraps as issued: and smaller planisphere, (223 x 223 mm), composed of die-cut blue & white printed outer card, black & white hemispheric celestial map volvelle disk, with central brass rivet, instructions printed in white on the back. All very good in the original mailing box for the large planisphere, the box a little worn, lacking one side strip, old paper tape repairs. A beautifully preserved example of the Barritt-Serviss Star and Planet Finder in its original plain card mailing box, a superb, complex Edwardian planisphere. This device was developed originally in 1906 by Garrett P. Serviss (1851-1929), an American astronomer and early science fiction writer - his first book Edison's Conquest of Mars was commissioned as a sequel to the Boston Post's Fighters of Mars, a plagiaristic take on Wells's War of the Worlds, but became influential in its own right - who teamed up with Leon Barritt (1852-1938), a highly-regarded political cartoonist, and amateur astronomer who founded the long-lived astronomical journal Monthly Evening Sky Map after paralysis of the right hand had robbed him of his ability to draw. The planisphere offered both the amateur and professional astronomer a star chart computing instrument, based on an adjustable volvelle that could be adjusted to display the visible stars for any time and date. This example includes printed instructions around the edges of the card front. Leon Barritt continued to produce and sell these planispheres into the 1930s, the earliest versions have more decorative elements such as the patterned black silk moire for the base, and decorative brass brads, while the later versions were typically of much plainer materials. The Planet Tables included here were published by Maria Barritt, Leon Barritt's wife, who took over as publisher of his magazine on his death, being an amateur astronomer and author in her own right. The smaller Star Explorer planetarium included here was a popular souvenir available for sale at the American Museum, Hayden Planetarium during the 1950s, and was continually being updated with planetary tables on back.
