        Jovis Amores. Danae.

      - An original watercolour on Ordinary Pasteboard faced with fine O.W. paper, image size 170 x 250mm, with a buff-coloured mount with hand-ruled border in blue, presented in an early gilded frame; the image depicting a frail and elderly woman robed in black who is seen pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with flaxen-haired cherubic babies grasping at butterflies; near fine but with one tiny dent to pasteboard which is invisible from the front.         [Photo Album]: Women's Candid Snapshots

Massachusetts, 1906. Near Fine. Oblong small octavo measuring 5.5" x 6.5". Gray wrappers with "photographs" stamped in white on the front wrapper. Contains 39 sepia toned gelatin silver photographs and 13 cyanotype prints with some captions. Album is very good with a chip on the front wrapper with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a Massachusetts woman between 1905-1906. The album is a collection of snapshots and candids with the woman and her compatriots, most of whom are other young women, posing and acting silly complete with humorous captions. Throughout the album the women are "hamming it up" for the camera with smiles and a variety of dress from night gowns to costumes. There are numerous photos of them posing in bed together, laying in a pile in white night gowns. Other photos show them chasing each other around the yard, posing in front of a log cabin, and picnicking. Written below the photos are tongue-in-cheek captions such as "shame on you" and "oh my stars!" A nice collection of images depicting girls having a laugh at the turn of the century.

        Souvenir Kodak Competition 1905

Rochester, NY: Eastman Kodak Co., [1906]. First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Near Fine. [14 leaves]; letterpress, offset lithography, and 10 mounted original photographs (including a vignette on the cover). Among the original photographs are prints by Eduard Steichen (Lady and Child, which won first prize in the contest; probably printed from a copy negative); Alfred Stieglitz (Soap Bubbles; believed to have been printed from the original negative); and Harold Baker (The Fairy Tale, 're-developed', according to the caption). Kodak announced a large photography contest for 1905, looking to spur popular adoption of photography. The winning entries were shown in New York and other locations as part of a touring exhibit. The winning images mostly show the influence of the Photo-Secession movement. In addition to reproducing some of the winning entries, Kodak used this publication to showcase various types of photographic paper and processes. The papers used for the original tipped-in prints are Velvet Velox, Portrait Velox, Sepia Paper, Carbon Velox, W-D Platinum, and Mezzo-Tone. The Souvenir was apparently produced in small numbers, perhaps for the New York exhibit at Madison Square Garden Concert Hall in November 1906. In any case, it's rather uncommon now, with just four holdings in OCLC (nos. 4017664 and 195139087). The only sale at auction in recent years was Swann Galleries' 2013 sale no. 2335, lot 20, $5250. First edition (first printing). Complete will all tipped-in images. A near fine copy in wrappers. Corners a bit bumped; some offsetting from tipped in images to the blank facing pages.

        Fruits of Solitude

The Lakeside Press,, Chicago: 1906 - Very good+ in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt decorations and borders on the front board and gilt text stamping on the spine with a 5 1/2" long scratch to the front board which did not touch the Lakeside Press logo or the gilt borders. This scratch has been filled-in and re-colored to make a close match to the original cloth cover. The gilt decorations and text are clean and bright. The first free end page shows a 3/8" diameter ink smudge. The pages are free of any foxing, names or notations. This is the smallest of the Lakeside Classics in terms of both weight and width being only 130 pages (129 numbered). The full title reads: "Fruits of Solitude Reflections and Maxims Relating to the Conduct of Human Life." The fourth Lakeside Classic issued at Christmas time in 1906. It is considered by many collectors as either the first or second most difficult copy to obtain in this series. The book was first published in England anonymously in 1693. According to the introductory notes by John Vance Cheney in this volume "two editions and a reprint were published the same year." The Lakeside Press used an eleventh edition of the title printed in Philadelphia in 1794 as the foundation for this copy. A very handsome, clean and collectible copy! [Attributes: Hard Cover]
