THE MIRROR OF THE SEA [inscribed by Conrad]

1906. [inscribed by Conrad] New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1906. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in yellow, grey and brown. First (American) Edition, published on the same day as the London one. This was Conrad's first volume of autobiographical non-fiction. This copy is in Cagle's binding "a," with the smaller (17x11mm) anchor-and-rope device on the front cover -- probably the earlier binding state, and certainly the one more-frequently encountered. This is a very good copy (spine darkened, rubbing at extremities and of pictorial pigment). Cagle A11b. Housed in an attractive cloth slipcase with inner chemise.~This is an inscribed presentation copy from Conrad, with the following endpaper inscription: "To Elena Wright | affectionately, from | her friend the Author | 4th Oct. 1906." Eleanor Annie "Elena" Wright (1877-1961) was Jessie Conrad's first cousin -- the daughter of Jessie's mother's sister Sophie -- who took dictation and typed for Conrad during these early years. In fact, THE MIRROR OF THE SEA owes a lot to Elena Wright: as Ford Madox Hueffer (Conrad's co-author of the recent ROMANCE) later recalled, Conrad "wrote" this book by reminiscing out loud (with Elena Wright taking it all down) -- in Hueffer's presence (Hueffer typically takes much credit for reminding Conrad of many events). Three things are noteworthy about this inscription: first, that it is so familiar ("affectionately, from her friend"); second, that at this early stage of Conrad's career (he would not hit it big until CHANCE in 1914), he chose to inscribe with humility, i.e. to write "the Author" rather than his signature; and third, that the date "4th Oct. 1906" was the actual date of publication of both the UK and US editions. (There is also a more recent inscription on the same leaf: "Eve Goodman from J.S. Hall | in memory of Nell"; since "Nell" is often a nickname for Eleanor, these people were quite likely descendants of Elena Wright.) Provenance: small bookplate of Stanley J. Seeger (his sale II, lot 254).

Large engraved wall print on 2 sheets, (together 58 x 97 cm) the sheets overlapping each other slightly, showing the traditional business centre of the city of Leiden. The title, both in Dutch and French, is printed in a banderole at the head, with putti on each side supporting the arms of Leiden and Holland. Leonardus Schenk's name appears as engraver and publisher at the right tip of the banderole. In black passepartout and gilt frame (82 x 121 cm).

Overvoorde, Catalogus van de prentverzameling der Gemeente Leiden (1906), no. 964; Waller, Biogr. woordenb. Noord Ned. graveurs, p. 287. A large engraved wall print in two sheets showing the trading and commercial centre of the city of Leiden, at the convergence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn canals. Unlike most other Dutch towns, Leiden had no central market square, so that the waterways formed the major access routes for merchandise. On the banks of the canals there is a lively market that converges on the bridge central in the print. Market traders and customers come and go. Women from the coastal fishing villages of Katwijk and Noortwijk display fresh fish for sale. Right in the print we see the monumental "Waag", the weigh-house built in 1658 following a plan by the Dutch architect and engraver Pieter Post. The splendid relief, designed by Rombout Verhulst, that crowns the entrance, is reproduced with a sharp eye for detail. In front of the building commercial goods are hoisted up from carts and a number of ships for transport to the weigh-house. Several other ships had moored and now continue to their destination. A boat flying the Dutch flag brings in a prominent party, while a herald standing precariously at the bow trumpets for right of way. We know of several other wall prints by Schenk depicting local situations with almost photographic detail. Thanks to this detail important socio-historical aspects have been passed on to later generations giving these prints an important cultural meaning today. With some faint foxing, otherwise in very good condition.

Enumeratio Plantarum in Insula Formosa sponte crescentium hucusque rite cognitarum adjectis descriptionibus et figuris specierum pro regione novarum. [AND] Flora montana Formosae, an enumeration of the plants found on Mt. Morrison, the Central Chain, and other mountainous regions of Formosa at altitudes of 3.000-13.000 ft. [AND] Materials for a flora of Formosa, supplementary notes to the Enumeratio Plantarum Formosanarum and Flora Montana Formosae. [Complete].

Tokyo, The College of Science, Imperial University, 1906-1912. Three volumes in three. Large 8vo (25.5 x 18.7 cm). 1,435 pp. [I(1906): 704; II(1908): 260; III(1911-1912): 471], one coloured folded map, 58 engraved plates, several text illustrations. Later uniform blue paper-covered boards with printed title mounted on the front boards.= Despite the three different titles these works clearly belong together, as they all deal with the botany of modern day Taiwan. The first part discusses the low altitudes (below 3,000 ft). The second, by Hayata alone, is on plants from higher elevations on this mountainous island. This area was little explored, and therefore Hayama added many new species. With 41 plates, this part is the most richly illustrated. The third part, also by Hayata, contains additions and corrections to the first two parts, and includes many new taxa too. A complete set such as this one is rare. About eight plates in the first part have some marginal repairs with Japanese paper, but otherwise in very good condition. Stafleu and Cowan, 5678, 2497, 2500.

Photographs of the Everard and Musgrave Ranges Expedition, South Australia, June-September 1914

A highly important record of early European contact with the Yankunytjatjara people. Eight gelatin silver print photographs, each 100 x 127 mm, unmounted; versos with the photographer's pencilled captions and sequence numbers; all of the prints are in fine condition. Although principally an ornithologist, by the early 1900s Adelaide-born Samuel White 'had earned a reputation as Australia's pre-eminent field naturalist ... During the years 1906 until 1922 he completed six major expeditions into Central Australia and a number of shorter trips.' (Jones, Philip.Images of the Interior: Seven Central Australian Photographers. Adelaide :South Australian Museum, 2011, p.30). The expedition to the Everard and Musgrave Ranges in June-September 1914 was undertaken in conjunction with the South Australian Government's geological expedition to the far north-west of South Australia. White was invited to accompany it as naturalist and 'to make observations on Aboriginal life and customs. This was to be one of the last Australian exploring expeditions in the nineteenth-century tradition. The party of six Europeans and two Aboriginal guides set out from the Oodnadatta railhead with sixteen camels on 28 June 1914. They travelled north-west into the unexplored Musgrave and Everard Ranges, making observations and collecting natural history specimens.' (ibid. p.33) The photographs of the Yankunytjatjara people of the Everard Ranges taken by White created much scientific interest, as the only previous contact the Yankunytjatjarahad had with Europeans was during the brief encounter with members of the Elder Exploring Expedition in 1891-92. The prints were sent to renowned anthropologist A.C. Haddon at Cambridge, and White's essay on the Yankunytjatjara, accompanied by four of the photographs, was published in the journal Man in 1921. White also published his own memoir of the expedition, In the far north-west : an expedition to the Musgrave and Everard Ranges (Adelaide, 1916). White's pencilled captions on the verso of each photograph are as follows: 9a. Everard natives in camp 9b. Aborig. who accompanied on exp. thro the Ev. Ranges 10a. Aborig. of E.R. throwing spear 11a. A young Everard man 13a. Middle-aged woman of the Everard. 14a. Young woman with child 14b. Nursing the first child 16a. A Musgrave native home. Native shelter in the Mulga scrub

        Jack Jarvis' Jaunt

N.p., 1906. 13 (of 14) original watercolor drawings, each with manuscript caption leaf. Some chipping to title and caption leaves. 13 (of 14) original watercolor drawings, each with manuscript caption leaf. An unpublished manuscript illustrated with 13 original watercolors. A skillfully and pleasingly executed series of watercolors illustrating the ill-fated journey of one Jack Jarvis, who returns from his jaunt without arms or legs. Unfortunately, the illustration showing the pivotal severings is missing. The author and illustrator, Charles Collette (1842-1924), was a popular English stage actor and composer. His extravagantly titled Cryptoconchoidsyphonostomata, or While It's to be Had, premiered in 1875 on the same billing as Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury.

The boards are bowed but the spine remains rounded and there is no pulling to the spine head. The contents are crisp and clean except for offsetting to two edges of the title page, light spotting to half-title and dedication page, and a 1cm ink blot to outer edges of back endpapers. The plates and tissue-guards are all in pristine condition without marking, foxing, creasing or other defects. Rackham's illustrations for Peter Pan are widely considered to be the highlight of his career and this edition, the most lavishly presented and collectable. .

Typescript Carbon Signed ("H.G. Wells"), entitled "Mr. H.G. Wells' Phillipics" in an editorial hand, being a letter to the editor of the Edinburgh Daily Express

Spade House, Sandgate, Kent, 1906. 1 page, with several annotations in Wells' hand and several others in an editorial hand. Legal folio. Very Good, old folds. 1 page, with several annotations in Wells' hand and several others in an editorial hand. Legal folio. Wells pens an indignant letter to the editor of the Edinburgh Daily Express in response to ongoing mis-characterizations by J.H. Bottomley, in a pamphlet and a series of letters to newspapers, of Wells' socialist views towards marriage and the family. Bottomley was a conservative election agent for Newton (Lancashire); Wells later recalled their dispute in his Experiments in Autobiography (1934): "Mr. Bottomley had put it this way, in a pamphlet for local circulation: 'Essentially the Socialist position is a denial of property in human beings; not only must land and the means of production be liberated, but women and children, just as men and things must cease to be owned. So in future it will be not my wife or your wife, but our wife.' The words in italics were his own addition but, somehow, they got inside the quotation marks." Wells had made the misquote public in the press, Bottomley had replied, and Wells' response in the present typescript chides Bottomley for the original offense, as well as for his subsequent attempt to smear Wells by linking him to Oscar Wilde. In part: "I see Mr Bottomley has written to you again, and those who have read the previous correspondence about his pamphlet will be quite prepared to hear that he writes to make another misstatement in his entirely hopeless struggle against the truth of the case ... The fact remains, and it will remain although Mr Bottomley continues to shower insults on me to the end of his days, that he took a quotation from my Socialism and the Family, cut off certain words at the end and added words with a diametrically opposite meaning. For that trick he offers no apology, he simply routs about for new possibilities of misrepresentations. His last feat in that direction is particularly worthy of the attention of your readers. It is to couple my name in an ambiguous manner with that of the late Oscar Wilde and to say that I 'quote his views (unspecified) with approval' because I wrote in the Fortnightly Review that Wilde's 'Soul of Man' was an admirable exposition of the attitude of the artistic mind towards Socialism. He has done the same in the Standard & also in a Yorkshire paper. Just think of the mental and moral quality of the man who can resort to that style of mud-throwing! Mr Bottomley seeks to salve his self-respect among his associates by pretending that I am 'furious' with him for this nasty attempt. No doubt he would like to have it on that footing. But one is not furious with people like Mr Bottomley; at the worst one is annoyed and disgusted. And I have written to the press about his feats of falsehood not because I care a rap about him, but because I do want to make it clear to the Unionist gentlemen of the north of England just how victory is being organized by their agents"

Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson. With preface by Thomas Carlyle.

Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1906. One of 300 copies on paper, there were a further 25 on vellum. Printed in red and black. Pp. 312. Small 4to., original limp vellum, spine lettered in gilt. An extremely good, fresh copy with only a slight crease on the spine from opening. With the green leather and gilt booklabel of Alex. M. Hudnut which has slight offset on the free endpaper. Cobden-Sanderson had met Emerson when he visited London in the 1860s and clearly he had made quite an impression. He saw him as 'a pinnacle of a man' and, as Tidcombe asserts, "Cobden-Sanderson was attracted ot Emerson's idealism, and to the hint of mysticism that coloured his view of nature". The essays printed here are 'History', 'Self-Reliance', 'Compensation', 'Spiritual Laws', 'Love', 'Friendship', 'Prudence', 'Heroism', 'The Over-Soul', 'Circles', 'Intellect' and 'Art'.
