'Puck of Pook's Hill', and 'Some Fore-Runners of Sherlock Holmes' in The Strand Magazine

London, George Newnes Jan-Dec.1906, 1906. The complete Puck in parts; FIRST APPEARANCE, preceeding the edition in book-form. Orinal magazine issues; 10 separate parts. .Illustrated throughout. Bound in publisher's light blue pictorial wrappers. Some minor chips as expected, some adsverts excised from Feb. and June issues, but generally a very clean, attractive set. Housed in a leather box. Also contains a Sherlockian article, plus pieces by Doyle, Max Pemberton, P.G.Wodehouse, Richard Marsh and E.Nesbit. Kipling's popular series of tales set in different historical eras, including Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon England, The Norman Conquest, The Middle Ages and the Tudor Period. The stories are all told to two children living near Pevensey, East Sussex, by characters magically plucked out of history by 'Puck'. Traditionally the term 'Puck' referred to a malicious spirit or demon of popular superstition, and from the 16th century the name of a mischevious goblin (or Hobgoblin), similar to that appearing in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the fairy scene from which is acted out here. Although 'Puck' is seen as a children's book, (in the same way 'Treasure Island' or 'King Solomon's Mines' are viewed), the story-tellers are adults and the romances they describe would only be suitable for older readers. Stewart [306]. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature (277). BMC No.1[1984]; 'Edwardian Children's Books'. Oxford Companion to English Lit. p537, 797.

LONDON: A PAPER READ AT A MEETING OF THE ART WORKERS GUILD . . . MARCH 6, 1891

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1906. ONE OF FIVE COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM (along with 300 on paper). Hardcover. 235 x 165 mm (9 1/4 x 6 1/2"). 7, [1] pp. ONE OF FIVE COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM (along with 300 on paper). Very pleasing russet crushed morocco by the Doves Bindery (stamp-signed and dated 1921 on rear turn-in), covers with simply ruled gilt border, raised bands, spine with vertical titling and gilt-ruled compartments, turn-ins with gilt fillets, all edges gilt. Tidcombe DP-9; Tomkinson, pp. 54-55; Franklin, p. 210. Boards a little bowed (as usual with vellum), otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, clean and bright inside and out. An attractively bound vellum copy of a paper in which Cobden-Sanderson laments that London has developed, not according to a sensible plan that would reflect its people and its people's accomplishments, but as the result of individuals striving for their own profit. He encourages a kind of architectural revolution, including a building upwards, as the expression of the collective mind and ideals of a great nation. His address met with less than enthusiastic response. Vellum copies of this publication were not sold by the press, and did not appear on the market until sales at Sotheby';s in 1923 (three copies), 1929, and 1938. These five luxury copies are obviously rare and highly prized: a copy matching the description of our volume (and perhaps this one) has sold for a hammer price as high as £4,200, or the equivalent of $7,266 (at Christie's on 16 Nov 2005).

The Story of Little Jane and Me. [With] Polly and the Aunt. By the Aunt.

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Company, the Riverside Press, 1898 and October 1906 - 2 works, octavo (196 × 140 mm). Both works in a presentation binding by the Riverside Press of contemporary red full morocco, spines gilt in compartments, double gilt ruled border to sides, gilt-rolled board edges, turn-ins elaborately gilt, marbled endpapers, red cloth bookmarkers, top edges gilt. Offset tanning to free endpapers from the turn-ins only, but otherwise fine copies. Work 1 with monochrome portrait plates, work 2 with portrait frontispiece. First editions, both inscribed by the author (the second work being the dedication copy) to Caroline Nelson Russell, "with the author's love" on the first blanks, with "Cambridge, June 9, 1905" in the first work, and "Cambridge, October 6, 1906" in the second work. The Story of Little Jane and Me bears M. E. Blatchford's own bookplate, making this her own copy, latterly inscribed and gifted, and also has notes in the author's hand to the reverse of the illustrated plates, detailing the identity and the birth- (and sometimes death-) dates of the people depicted. Polly and the Aunt (which is the dedication copy, the printed dedication reading "To C. N. R. Thy acceptance Maketh blest") contains the author's manuscript additions of the real names of characters where they have been changed for publication (as well as some notes), confirming the intimate connection of the recipient to these works. These titles are very scarce in any state - the Osborne Collection of Children's books has a 1926 reprint of Little Jane and no copy of Polly and the Aunt - and to have family copies in fine condition, bound for presentation by the press, and furthermore inscribed and annotated, one of them to the dedicatee, must be indeed a rarity.         Lord Randolph Churchill, inscribed and dated by Winston Churchill to his best man before publication

This is the first edition of Churchill's biography of his father, inscribed on the day before publication to Churchill's lifelong friend, confidante, and best man at his wedding, Hugh Cecil. The unusually personal inscription inked in black in four lines on the Volume I ffep reads: "Linky / from / Winston S.C / 1 January 1906." The ink is mildly age-toned, but remains quite distinct with no discernable age-spreading. The inscription page remains clean and bright. The books retain square and tight original bindings with sharp corners and nicely rounded spines. There is minor wear at the spine ends, sunning and minor staining of the spines, and a few paint spots on the Volume II covers. The contents are clean, bright, and complete. Spotting in both volumes is mild and primarily confined to the prelims and the untrimmed page edges. Lord Hugh Richard Heathcote Gascoyne Cecil (1869-1956) - "Linky" to friends - was son of the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury. He was a Conservative MP from 1895 to 1937, then Provost of Eton College Oxford until 1944. He was best man at Churchill's wedding in 1908 and - at Winston's invitation - became Baron Quickswood in 1941. As a leader of the eponymous "Hughligans" Linky strongly influenced Churchill's early Parliamentary career. This dissident group of clever, young, and ambitious Conservative back bench MPs ceaselessly, stridently, and often effectively opposed Tory leadership. Winston labored over his father's biography from 1902-1905, a time Winston began as a dissident Tory (as his father had been) and ended as a turncoat Liberal. This work was fitting to inscribe to Linky. Both men began political careers preceded by famous fathers. But Linky's father was a living presence, Winston's a dead weight. Lord Randolph, a fiery and erratic Tory, infamously died young, politically defeated and disgraced. Lord Salisbury was a Tory mainstay, member of the House of Lords, and thrice Prime Minister, his last premiership coinciding with Linky's election to Parliament. Linky remained faithful to the Tory party, if not to its policy and leadership. Linky spent more than 40 continuous years as a conservative MP, opposing Tory orthodoxy, but with less edge, angst, urgency, and ambition than Winston. Over 40 tumultuous years from his first election to his first premiership, Winston would successively represent, oppose, loathe, reject, rejoin, fiercely criticize, and finally lead the Conservative Party. As early as 1901 Churchill considered leaving the Party and confided in Linky. On 28 December 1901, Linky wrote admonishing Winston - gently - both to wait and to modulate the tone of his criticism. When Winston's decision became irrevocable he wrote a long, remarkably candid explanation to Linky: "To go on like this wavering between opposite courses, feigning friendship to a party where no friendship exists, & loyalty to leaders whose downfall is desired, sickens me." (Letter of 24 October 1903) After Winston became a Liberal in 1904 - even after Churchill rejoined the Conservatives in 1924 - Linky and Winston sometimes bitterly disagreed on issues. Nonetheless, their friendship withstood time and politics. In August 1908 Linky quickly agreed to be Churchill's best man. Over the years, Churchill repeatedly wrote to Linky with revealing nostalgia, humor, and candor, notably when Churchill lost his premiership in the General Election of 1945, when his brother Jack died in 1947, and when Churchill turned 80 and wrote to Linky - 5 years Churchill's senior - "I have had both harmony and discord rolling over each other inside my octogenarian nut" (Letter of 8 December 1954). In December 1940, nearly 35 years after Churchill inscribed these books, Churchill wrote to Linky offering a barony, with humor and good natured teasing testifying that a close association endured. Linky lived to see the end of Winston's second premiership. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods/ICS A8(a), Langworth p.69.

Collection of Original Photographs of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906

Photo album of original photographs of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906. Oblong octavo. Cloth. Contains 23 photographs, either black and white or silverprints, each either 7" x 5" or 5" x 4", all tipped-into a blank photo album. Most of the photographs are in fine condition, in the slightly worn album. Written in an unknown, probably later hand on the first page: "1906 San Francisco, Calif. earthquake, April 18 -- lasted 48 seconds, 700 lives lost! These pictures sent to us from Uncle Ed Gilson that lived in Calif." Although we found near contemporary records of a San Francisco county clerk with this name, we could determine nothing of substance about Gilson. The images show the aftermath of the earthquake which destroyed a vast portion of the city. There are pictures of ruined buildings, torn up streets, and refugee camps. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, both as a result of the strong quake and even more the ensuing four days of fires which destroyed large portions of the city. The number of casualties was actually several thousands, although at the time city officials reported only 375 deaths (in the age before Federal aid it was more important to put up a good front and keep real estate prices high). Much of the city was rebuilt from the ground up and these photos convey both the scale of the destruction and the pluckiness of the survivors, who in several images, calmly observe the ruins of their city. .

Scarce offprint - published simultaneously with the Polish edition - of Smoluchowski's seminal publication on Brownian motion "which turned out to be of fundamental importance not only to the theory of Brownian motion but above all to the victory of the atomistic theory of matter" (Piasecki, Centenary of Marian Smoluchowski's Theory of Brownian Motion) which made Chandrasekhar state that " . . . it was Smoluchowski whose work, perhaps more than that of any other man brought about the ultimate reconciliation of the seemingly irreconcilable and victory to the atomistic view."The theory of the Brownian motion was elaborated independently by Einstein and Smoluchowski and the theory is often referred to as the Einstein-Smoluchowski Theory. Both scientists explained the phenomenon as a result of collisions between the suspended particles and the molecules of the surrounding fluid and arrived at almost the same quantitative predictions. However, their approaches where so different that they can be looked upon as two complementary studies reflecting the original ideas of each of the two authors. This fact has been quickly recognised by the scientific community, and shows the scale of Smoluchowski's contribution to science. Already in 1917, just after Smoluchowski passed away, Sommerfeld wrote: "His name will, forever, be associated with the first flowering of atomic theory.""From about 1900 Smoluchowski worked on Brownian movement. He wished to use experimental data to verify the theory he had obtained desire complicated by the confused situation of experimental research. In the meantime Einstein, in papers of 1905 and 1906, had presented a solution to the problem. Smoluchowski then decided to publish his results in [In the present paper], which presented his different method. Einstein started from general relations of statistical physics, an approach that was universal but did not lend itself to visualization. For example, Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules. Smoluchowski started by examining the effects of successive collisions and obtained a final formula that differed little from Einstein's. Smoluchowski's further works in this field extend through an examination of the Brownian movement of a particle undergoing the influence of a quasi-elastic force to the Brownian movements of macroscopic bodies. At the Conference of Natural Scientists at Münster in 1912, Smoluchowski proposed the observation of the Brownian rotative movement of a small mirror suspended on a thin quartz fiber and the observation free end of a similar fiber. The first experiment was performed by W. Gerlach and E. Lehrer in 1927, and later by Eugen Kappler; the second, by A Houdijk and P. Zeeman, and by E. Einthoven. In 1925, Both experiments confirmed Smoluchowski's calculations." (DSB)In the history of physics Marian Smoluchowski will be remembered mainly for his work on the theory of Brownian motion and related problems. In his obituary, Arnold Sommerfeld wrote: "His name will, forever, be associated with the first flowering of atomic theory". Let us remember that at the beginning of our century the "molecular hypothesis" was just a hypothesis, which needed proofs, and that the first experimental proofs - honoured in 1926 by Nobel prizes in physics (for Perrin) and in chemistry (for Svedberg) - were based on Smoluchowski's theory of Brownian motion, critical opalescence, sedimentation and coagulation. (Fulinski, On Marian Smoluchowski's Life and Contribution to Physics, pp. 1525).Smoluchowski's name still remains alive in the modern physics and his papers are frequently cited in the literature. The theoretical basis and the methods established in his work, including the Moluchowski equations derived within theories of Brownian motion which became the founding blocks of modern statistical physics, especially of the theory of stochastic processes

Extensive archive concerning the founding and early administration of the Wolfskehl Prize

1906-14. [Fermat, Pierre de (1601-65).] Wolfskehl Prize. Extensive archive consisting of 35 manuscript and 5 printed documents concerning the founding and early administration of the Prize, established by a bequest left by Paul Wolfskehl (1856-1906), to be awarded to the first person to solve Fermat's Last Theorem of 1637. Ca. 140pp. G?ngen and Darmstadt, 1906-14. Various sizes. Very good to fine. The documents include numerous signatures and signed statements of famous G?ngen mathematicians David Hilbert, Felix Klein, Hermann Minkowski, Carl Runge and Edmund Landau, among others (see list below for details). From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).The Original Mathematical-Scientific Archive Relating to the Most Celebrated Problem in Number Theory, Fermat's Last Theorem. The Wolfskehl Prize, intended for the first person to publish a complete proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, was established in 1907 by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences; it was awarded 90 years later to British mathematician Andrew Wiles, who published his proof in 1995. The worldwide fame of Fermat's Last Theorem in the last century is due in no small part to the Wolfskehl Prize; as Alf van der Poorten, author of Notes on Fermat's Last Theorem (1996), remarked, "It's the romance, and size, of this prize that gave the FLT its popularity and notoriety" (quoted in Barner, p. 1301).The story of Fermat's celebrated "Last Theorem" is among the most famous in the history of mathematics: Fermat owned a copy of the 1621 Arithmetica of Diophantus, edited by Claude Bachet, and was in the habit of noting his own number theory propositions in the margins of the book. In 1637 Fermat made a marginal note next to one of the problems put forth by Diophantus, stating, in essence, that equations of the form xn + yn = zn have no whole-number solutions when n is greater than 2. In his note Fermat stated that he had found a truly marvelous proof (demonstratio mirabilis), which would not fit into the narrow margin of the book. Fermat died in 1665 without revealing his proof, and today some scholars doubt that he actually achieved it. In 1670 Fermat's son published a second edition of Bachet's Diophantus that incorporated all of Fermat's marginal notes and propositions. Most of Fermat's propositions were proved during the 18th century, but the Last Theorem remained a stumbling block for succeeding generations of mathematicians, and by the early 19th century it had gained a reputation as perhaps the world's most baffling mathematical mystery. "Simple, elegant, and [seemingly] impossible to prove, Fermat's Last Theorem captured the imaginations of amateur and professional mathematicians for over three centuries. For some it became a wonderful passion. For others it was an obsession that led to deceit, intrigue, or insanity" (Aczel).Among the many mathematicians, professional and amateur, who came under the spell of the Last Theorem was Paul Wolfskehl, a Darmstadt physician from a wealthy family who took up the study of mathematics in the 1880s after he began exhibiting symptoms of multiple sclerosis. In January 1905, about a year and a half before his death, Wolfskehl altered his will to include a bequest of 100,000 gold marks to the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (Königliche Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften) for the establishment of the Wolfskehl Prize, to be awarded to the first person either to solve Fermat's Last Theorem or to supply a valid counterexample. The bequest originally amounted to about $1.5 million in today's money, but was reduced by inflation and currency devaluation to $50,000, the amount that Wiles was awarded in 1997. Upon receiving notice of Wolfskehl's bequest, the Göttingen Academy appointed a commission, consisting of mathematicians Ernst Ehlers, David Hilbert, Felix Klein, Hermann Minkowski and Carl Runge, and began working on formulating the rules and conditions of the prize. The archive we are offering documents this process in detail, and also offers a great deal of information on the early years of the Wolfskehl Commission to 1914. For further details, including a listing of all the documents in the archive, please contact us.

Tokyo, Shimbi Shoin, Meiji 39-42, [1906-9]. 5 large folio volumes (19.5 x 13.5 inches), each bound in beautiful decorated silk over boards, secured with tassles, in the 5 original grass cloth clasped chitsu cases with printed silk title labels. This epitome of the Ukiyo-e school and its development, edited by Shiichi Tajima, et al., was and is a remarkable scholarly and artistic triumph of book-making and the finest production of its kind ever attempted. There are over 150 color woodcut reproductions in the set, some of which are said to have taken days to finish, since as many as 200 separate woodblocks were used to create the effects. This is the original edition of the set. Complete, including the magnificent triptych, plate number 155 [in volume 5], which was not included when the set was originally published in Japanese. The set is near fine, though the case are a bit worn (one clasp is missing).
