LADY BALTIMORE Inscribed to John Philip Sousa

MacMillan & Company, New York 1906 - Decorated cloth with thirteen full-page illustrations by Vernon Howe Bailey and Lester Ralph. Author of THE VIRGINIAN, the classic novel of the West that helped to create the idealized perception of the cowboy's life and that influenced countless authors of westerns, Wister graduated from Harvard with highest honors in music. He advanced his studies in music in Paris where he was encouraged by Franz Liszt. While Wister never pursued a career in music, his studies in that field certainly brought him into contact with prominent musicians and composers. This book reflects Wister's interest and wide range of contacts as he has INSCRIBED and SIGNED it to John Philip Sousa in May 1907 on the verso of the frontispiece. Slight blurring to the date but a clear, fine inscription from a truly American writer to a like composer. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

By Gyokko Shimomura. Two double-page openings of preliminary text, 18 double-page openings of colored woodcut plates; one double-page opening of preliminary text, 17 double-page openings of colored woodcut plates. Two vols. 4to (330 x 240 mm.), orig. printed boards with silk spines, bound in accordion style. Kyoto: Unsodo, 1906. A richly illustrated and luxurious kimono pattern book. This is a very unusual example as the kimonos are displayed in a variety of highly stylized natural and domestic scenes, each relating to the seasons. Many of the handsome double-page illustrations, printed in rich colors, provide an almost "dreamy" quality to the images. The calligraphic title-pages are by Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924), the prominent painter and calligrapher. Bindings with minor wear. Fine copies. .

Quarto (11 x 8 5/8 in; 280 x 216 mm). x, 69, [3] pp. Frontispiece and fifty color plates with captioned tissue guards mounted on heavy brown stock. An excellent copy, the binding fresh and clean. Housed in a plain chemised box.In 1906 Hachette et Cie, Paris, published two Edition DeLuxe versions of this title. There were 200 unsigned copies on 'Papier Whatman' and in addition another 20 copies that were signed by Rackham and printed on 'Papier du Japon.'Around the middle of 1904. Ernest Brown & Phillips commissioned 50 color illustrations to Rip Van Winkle, and purchased the originals and all rights for 300 guineas. The publishing rights were then resold in a complicated deal to Heinemann, before the illustrations were exhibited at Brown and Phillips' Leicester Galleries. Most of the Rip drawings were sold at the exhibition, and by October they had all found purchasers."Brown and Phillips' investment, made secure by the keenness of Rackham's purchasers, was not let down by the reviews his work received.". When, in September 1905, Rip Van Winkle was published, comparisons between Rackham and German artists [i.e. Dürer and Joseph Sattler] continued to be voiced, The Times remarking on 'the marvel of his Düreresque detail.'". The 51 illustrations, for a story of not more than five thousand words, enables the story to be told twice, once through Irving's words, and once again, image by image, through Rackham's pictures. In his illustrations, Rackham pays homage not only to Dürer, Cruikshank and Dutch seventeenth-century painting, but to contemporary artists, too." (Hamilton).". But the first work that greatly advanced his fame in the years immediately following his marriage was his edition of Rip Van Winkle This lovely book decisively established Rackham as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period. The deluxe edition of the book was fully subscribed before the [Leicester Galleries] exhibition closed" (Hudson).Riall, p. 70. Latimore and Haskell, p. 26. [Attributes: First Edition]

A California Judge Tells His Kentucky Relatives About The Massive Earthquake: ?We Have All Been Living In A State Of Uncertainty?A Cessation Of Judicial Business For Forty Five Days Has Left The Trial Courts With Congested Dockets? My Daughter Ethel Was At Stanford University? It Suffered A Loss Of About $4,000,000 In The Destruction And Injury Of Many Fine Buildings. Two Lives Were Lost One Being That Of A Student?San Francisco Will Be Rebuilt Because Of Its Almost Matchless Harbor?

ALS. 2pg. 8 ½? x 11?. June 7, 1906. Visalia, California. An autograph letter signed ?W.B. Wallace? on ?Superior Court Chambers? letterhead. He wrote to Mrs. Wallace M. Bartlett of Louisville, Kentucky: ?You must pardon me for the long delay in answering your letter reminding me of my promise to visit my Kentucky kinsmen this year. Since April 18th a day of disaster in this state all plans for the present year had to be re-formed and in many cases abandoned. We have all been living in a state of uncertainty. Every day since April 18th up to last Monday has been a legal holiday. It became necessary for the Governor to declare successive holidays in order that the banks throughout the state could arrange to safely resume business and that the Legislature might be convened in extra session and enact some new laws necessary to protect property rights suddenly imperiled by the great calamity that befell San Francisco and other near by places on that date. A cessation of judicial business for forty five days has left the trial courts with congested dockets rendering it necessary for most of the judges to continue holding court during the usual summer period for vacation. Unhappily I find myself in this situation and I will be unable to leave the state during his year...Fortunately none of us were injured by the great earthquake. The shock here was slight and no property was injured. My daughter Ethel was at Stanford University when it occurred. The University is about sixty miles from San Francisco. It suffered a loss of about $4,000,000 in the destruction and injury of many fine buildings. Two lives were lost one being that of a student and six other students were quite badly injured. Communication with the outside world was immediately interrupted and it was several days before we could get direct news from Ethel. She was not injured though when the shock occurred near 5 o'clock in the morning she and her companions thought the world was coming to an end when the furniture was being tossed about the room and she could see the fine structures of the university falling into shapeless masses of stone. It will be some time for our State to fully recover from the effects of so great a calamity but San Francisco will be rebuilt because of its almost matchless harbor and because it was proven that modern steel structures can stand uninjured after such an earthquake. To many of us who have known that city almost all of our lives it will not probably be the San Francisco of which we were so proud. The loss resulting from the earthquake there has been estimated at not more than $70,000,000 but the great fire with no water to stay its progress, increased the loss to thirty times that...?. The letter has mailing folds and comes with the original mailing envelope. A fine letter in the aftermath of the famous earthquake.
