        The Letters of Horace Walpole

Edinburgh - John Grant, 1906. Edinburgh - John Grant, 1906 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the correspondences of Horace Walpole, the fourth Earl of Orford. Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (24 September 1717 2 March 1797) was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, south-west London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. Along with the book, his literary reputation rests on his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. His memoirs of the Georgian social and political scene, though heavily biased, are a useful primary source for historians. Walpole's numerous letters are similarly useful as a historical resource. In one, dating from 28 January 1754, he coined the word serendipity which he said was derived from a silly fairy tale he had read, The Three Princes of Serendip. The oft-quoted epigram, This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel, is from a letter of Walpole's to Anne, Countess of Ossory, on 16 August 1776. The original, fuller version appeared in a letter to Sir Horace Mann on 31 December 1769: I have often said, and oftener think, that this world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel a solution of why Democritus laughed and Heraclitus wept. Illustrated throughout with sixty-four engraved plates (collated complete). Complete in nine volumes. Condition: In blue cloth bindings. Externally sound, though with some bumping and marks. Some considerable water damage to the front board of volume IX and dampstaining to volume VIII. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signatures to Pages are bright, though with somefoxing throughout. He settled at Tuckton House, where Tolstoy had enjoyed a summer holiday in 1894. Tchertkov brought with him thirty or so other emigres, mainly middle-class artisans and professionals, who were resolved to publish the works of their mentor, Tolstoy. Chertkov put his money, energy and leadership skills into the remarkable Free Age Press, run by A. C. Fifield. Over the next few years, this small press produced 424 million pages of Tolstoy’s writing. Its propagating work was then carried on by the publisher C. W. Daniel, also a fan of Tolstoy, and who acquired the rights of the Free Age Press around 1906.

Philadelphia: Officine tipografiche del giornale "L'Opinione", 1906. Philadelphia: Officine tipografiche del giornale "L'Opinione". 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Volume published for the 1906 Milan International (Esposizione Internazionale di Milano). 119 leaves printed only on the recto. Modern green cloth. Frontispiece. A concise history of Italian immigrants in Philadelphia. With brief notes on the supposedly first Italians to have established residence in the City of Brotherly Love (Vito Viti, according to the text, was the very first in 1815); the First Italian Presbyterian Church; the Società di M. S. Maria Santissima delle Grazie di "Acquavella-Cilento"; the Consorella Associazione Italiana Regina Margherita; the Società Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso San Biagio; the Chiesa Cattolica di Santa Maria Maddalena de Pazzi; the First Italo-American Building Association; the Federazione Italiana di Filadelfia; the Società Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso e Beneficenza; the Società Italiana di M. S. Santa Barbara; the monuments to Cristoforo Colombo and Giuseppe Verdi; the Parrocchia di Nostra Signora del Buon Consiglio; the Fabiani Italian Hospital and more. Also includes a history of the newspaper L'Opinione. In his brief essay on the Italian colony, Gerolamo Naselli, Regio Console of Philadelphia, states that the number of Italians in the city approximated 100,000. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, many by Giuseppe Brocato. Many portraits, businesses (banks, breweries, barber shops, factories, groceries, etc.), and several views of the Italian neighborhood (Federal Street, Fitzwater Street, Eight Avenue, Christian Street, Carpenter Street, and others). There are a few smudges and short closed tears to some of the leaves, otherwise internally clean. The spine was at some point re-glued rather amateurishly with the result that the first three or four leaves stuck to it and now are partially torn at the gutter. Good. An extremely interesting cross-section of immigrant life at the beginning of the 20th century. Uncommon, OCLC locates only two copies of this title. In the Italian language. ; Folio .

... Kerr erkannte Musils Begabung sofort und stellte wahrscheinlich den Kontakt zum Wiener Verlag her, der den 'Törleß' Ende 1906 publizierte. ... Mit seiner Rezension der 'Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß' im Berliner 'Tag' vom 21.         Memorias de mis Tiempos

Libreria de la Viuda de C. Bouret, Paris / Mexico 1906 - Two volumes, octavo, pp 380; 447. The first volume covers from 1828 to 1840, the second from 1840 to 1853. Prieto (1818 - 97) was a very important literary figure in Mexico almost throughout the 19th century. A staunch liberal, and in government positions whenever the liberals were in power, he served several administrations, incl. that of Juarez during the reign of Maximilian, which earned him great esttem. Novelist, poet, journalist - he performed all these roles, but his Memoires are of lasting value. His account of Mexico during these years is unmatched. His portraits of the players, both in politics and the arts, are brilliant and the best that we have of them. Though a liberal, his judgment was always fair as to the character of men. Some ink underlining in the indexes, some pencil underlining in text. This set is in excellent condition, bound in the publishers pebbled rust cloth with gilt titles, and the wrapper covers bound in, apparently by the publisher himself. The paper is very good, slightly coated. Near fine set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
