Vollständiges Grundwerk in 20 Bänden. Einbanddecken in farblich passendem olivfarbenen Leinen. Marmorierter Buchschnitt.

        The Australian Golfer

Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1906 - Octavo, xvi, 260, [2] pages with 13 illustrations plus 76 plates and a detachable swing-guide sheet tipped in after the plates at the rear (this is not noted in the plate list, and it is frequently missing, and often missed by cataloguers, but it is referred to in the caption to the illustration on page 69). Cloth, top edge gilt; covers slightly marked and rubbed at the extremities, with the rear board bowed in slightly near the head of the spine; front inner hinge lightly (read, almost invisibly) reinforced; pencil underlining to eight consecutive lines on one early page; detachable swing-guide sheet is now detached (but still present); overall, this is a very agreeable copy of a scarce book, rarely found complete and in such good condition. The first Australian golf book of any substance. Daniel Gordon (Dan) Soutar was born in Carmyllie, Scotland in 1882. 'In 1888, his family moved to the nearby seaside resort town of Carnoustie where - over the next 15 or so years - he received a thorough grounding in the game of golf. He emigrated to Australia in 1903, and made an immediate mark by winning the 1903 Australian Amateur Championship at the old Glenelg course. In 1905, he turned professional and went into partnership with Carnegie Clark making clubs at Rose Bay in Sydney. That same year he won his only Australian Open Championship at Royal Melbourne' (Australian Golf Heritage Society website). His obituary in the West Australian, 1 December 1937, provides a little more detail on this point: 'Then followed an amazing run of seconds. In the Open he filled that position on no fewer than seven occasions, in between times winning State and club championships'. Use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability.

There is a tribute to Spiro in the 1964 Leo Baeck Institute Yearbook (9:348). Spiro, the son of a noted cantor in Breslau, received his training in Munich and Italy. He then went to Paris and lived there for a number of years, teaching at the Academie Moderne, later moving on to Berlin, where he taught at the Academy of Arts and was involved in the Secessionist movement. He was particularly known for his sketches of musicians and other notables executed from life. He returned to Paris in 1929, subsequently making his way to New York.

The Works of Charles Dickens

London: Chapman & Hall, 1906-1908. Octavo, 40 volumes. Full red morocco bound by Bayntun, with gilt titles and tooling, blue inlay. This example is finely bound and is extra-illustrated with two autograph letters signed by Charles Dickens. The first letter is to Sir John Bowring. An interesting letter regretting that Dickens did not attend Bowring's lecture and mentioning his "Falstaff house" and "All the Year Round" and joking with him about taking poison from the Natives. Bowring was a travel writer and the fourth Governor of Hong Kong. Published in Letters of Charles Dickens: 1836-1870, p 180. The second letter is from London, June 13, 1848, to Edward Davis. In which Dickens apologizes for not answering his letter earlier but explains that he has no connection to the Punch office and that his amateur company will not be able to visit Newcastle. Numerous plates throughout including mounted illustrations after George Cruikshank, Hablot K. Browne. An exquisite set in near fine condition. Dickens is generally considered the greatest writer of the Victorian period. His works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. "His imaginative freshness, his deep and sincere tenderness and pity, his whole-souled humor that is seldom sharpened into wit, his superabundance of creative energy, have built a deathless niche in the temple of fame for Charles Dickens" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 184).

        Pride and Prejudice

London: George Allen, 1906 Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Introduced by George Saintsbury. Later printing. Finely bound in ¾ crushed light brown Morocco, with five raised bands to the spine, ruling and spine lettering in gilt, all edges gilt. A fine copy, with a slight hint of wear to the extremities, former owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown, bright and fresh pages. A very attractive and pleasing copy. Austen’s second work, Pride and Prejudice, is her most famous and one of the most popular books ever written. The unforgettable story of the Bennet sisters quickly sold out of the first printing, and remains a beloved novel today over 200 years after its first publication. Austen was highly praised by Sir Walter Scott, among others, for her proficiency in describing human emotions and the complexity of relationships. Pride and Prejudice established Austen as one of the most relevant and important female writers of her time, and it’s popularity is a prime example of why she is so highly regarded even today. Indeed, in his introduction to this edition, noted critic George Saintsbury declares "unhesitatingly" that Pride and Prejudice is "the most perfect, the most characteristic, and the most eminently quintessential of its author’s works." This edition contains over 100 illustrations completed in Hugh Thomson's signature pen and ink style. Although it was first published almost a century after the first edition, it is cherished because the illustrations grasp the zeitgeist of the waning Victorian Era. After illustrating Pride and Prejudice, Thomson went on to create illustrations for the rest of Austen’s five novels: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818).. Hard Cover. Fine. Illus. by Thomson, Hugh.

        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. This is a superlative, collector-grade, uncut and unread British first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This was Winston Churchill's first biographic work, concentrating heavily on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. Originally published in 1906, it was well received as both a frank portrayal of the subject and a showcase for Winston's literary talent. At the time, the young Winston Churchill had recently quit his father's Conservative Party to become a Liberal, was in his early 30s, and still saw himself in the shadow of his once-influential father. The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Offered here is the British first edition, only printing, a collector grade, uncut and unread, near-fine+ set. Both the binding and contents of this set are noteworthy. The red cloth bindings are clean, square, and tight, retaining beautifully rounded spines and bright spine gilt. There is no fading or color shift on the spines, which retain uniform color with no color shift between the covers and spine. A trivial hint of wear is confined to the corners and spine ends of the truly outstanding bindings. The volumes are clearly unread; the pages of Volume I are uncut after page 60 and uncut after the table of contents in Volume II. There are no inscriptions or book plates. The contents are exceedingly bright and crisp and the untrimmed page edges are free of soiling. The only flaw that marks this set is spotting to the untrimmed page edges of both volumes. This is a truly virgin set and about as good as it gets for collectors. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods/ICS A8(a), Langworth p.69.
