A fine suite of the plates in a very good portfolio. ---- The early English editions of Wilde's Salome were published with only thirteen of Beardsley's drawings, including the decorative borders for the title page, list of plates and colophon. Some of these illustrations were also toned down for publication. The three cancelled drawings and the others in the form of their original, uncensored designs were first published in the John Lane edition issued in september 1906 (dated 1907) and then issued loose in this portfolio with the addition of another design, "Salome on Settle", here published for the first time. A scarce publication. (Maxwell; The Victorian Illustrated Book. ---- Mason. Bibliography of Oscar Wilde. Page 384-note).

        HUEFFER (Ford Madox)

The Pinafore Library: Christina’s fairy Book. By Ford Madox Hueffer. London: Alston Rivers, Ltd., N.D. [1906]. Post 16mo in half-sheets; half-title not called for; hand-coloured presentation leaf (unused) with series advertisements on verso precedes illustrated title-page printed in red and black; 3pp. integral advertisements at end; pp.[77]+[iii]; quarter blue rough buckram, cut flush, ledger-style, glazed printed paper boards, the front board printed pictorially in green, brown, drab, and black, the back board printed pictorially in blue, grey, pale brown, and green; end-papers printed pictorially in blue, the front and back end-papers bearing different designs, the back end-papers hand-coloured (v. note); rounded die-cut edges. Paper covering of boards chipped a little at corners, and covers generally a trifle rubbed; two or three scattered fox-spots internally, and slight cracking or scuffing of end-papers at hinges; a very good copy, nonetheless of a rare book that is almost unknown in commerce, as here, in its original binding. Issued as the first volume of ‘The Pinafore Library’, the advertisement leaf recording the other volumes as ‘The Travelling Companions’ by Lady Margaret Sackville; ‘Highways and Byways in Fairyland’ by Arthur Ransome; ‘The Fairy Doll’ by Netta Syrett; and ‘Who’s Who in Fairyland’ by Anne Pyne. Arguably Ford’s scarcest book, of which the bibliographer had never seen a copy, and no copy has been recorded at auction for well over the past thirty years. COPAC records copies only at the British Library, Oxford, Cambridge, and (possibly) the National Library of Scotland; whilst OCLC shows none in America, although Princeton has a copy added after the Naumburg collection check-list was published in the Princeton University Library Chronicle. The hand-colouring of the presentation leaf and back end-papers here has been very carefully and artistically done, but is presumably the work of a child. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

The Sunken Bell [Signed/Unterzeichnet] [Die versunkene Glocke] A Fairy Play in Five Acts

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1906. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, later printing (minor rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, tiny bit of fraying to the spine tail, board corners turned a touch inward, slight marking to the boards -- no dust jacket), SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN on the half-title; a Play first issued in Germany (1897) and here translated to English by Charles Henry Meltzer and complete with 11 photographic illustrations of the actors and scenes. German dramatist and novelist Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature 1912 "primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art". While in most of his Plays Hauptmann dealt with conditions of the low-class life, in "The Sunken Bell" ("Die versunkene Glocke"), his most popular Play in his native Germany and one which Hauptmann called a "Märchendramen", Hauptmann offers a Play which the misery of life and the bliss of heaven emerge with striking contrast. (An important and noted work in his winning the Award, "The Sunken Bell" was so popular in Germany that, as of the time of the Award, it had been through at least 60 printings). In his speech presenting the Award to Hauptmann, Hans Hildebrand, then the Acting Secretary of the Swedish Academy, stated: "Hauptmann's particular virtue is his penetrating and critical insight into the human soul. It is this gift that enabled him in his plays and in his novels to create truly living individuals rather than types representing some particular outlook or opinion. All the characters we meet, even the minor ones, have a full life." Then, after speaking of Hauptmann's controversial "Der Narr in Christo Emanuel Quint" ["The Fool in Christ: Emanuel Quint"], Hildebrand noted that Hauptmann's "...manifold activities as a writer have given us other marvellous works. I shall mention only two here, Hanneles Himmefahrt and Die versunkene Glocke." the latter being the very book herein described. While signed copies of Limited Editions of Hauptmann's work are available (in German), signed copies of his trade editions are quite scarce indeed (with copies of this trade edition being quite scarce to the market in any printing), and signed copies of his work in English translation are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy SIGNED BY GERHART HAUPTMANN. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        The Letters of Horace Walpole

Edinburgh - John Grant, 1906. Edinburgh - John Grant, 1906 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the correspondences of Horace Walpole, the fourth Earl of Orford. Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (24 September 1717 2 March 1797) was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, south-west London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. Along with the book, his literary reputation rests on his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. His memoirs of the Georgian social and political scene, though heavily biased, are a useful primary source for historians. Walpole's numerous letters are similarly useful as a historical resource. In one, dating from 28 January 1754, he coined the word serendipity which he said was derived from a silly fairy tale he had read, The Three Princes of Serendip. The oft-quoted epigram, This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel, is from a letter of Walpole's to Anne, Countess of Ossory, on 16 August 1776. The original, fuller version appeared in a letter to Sir Horace Mann on 31 December 1769: I have often said, and oftener think, that this world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel a solution of why Democritus laughed and Heraclitus wept. Illustrated throughout with sixty-four engraved plates (collated complete). Complete in nine volumes. Condition: In blue cloth bindings. Externally sound, though with some bumping and marks. Some considerable water damage to the front board of volume IX and dampstaining to volume VIII. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signatures to Pages are bright, though with somefoxing throughout. Mould to pages of volume IX. Overall: GOOD ONLY due to dampstaining of volume IX..

All photographs are in a very good condition, slightly edge-nicked and dulled as with age. A selection of the portraits are mounted on stiff card. Overall, this unique collection remains particularly well-preserved. Further scans, images etc. and additional bibliographical material available on request. . A remarkable collection of over 30 original photographs relating to Vladimir Chertkov and Tuckton House in England, the home of Free Age Press, which published works of Tolstoy from his original manuscripts. The photographs include portraits of Chertkov, his family and other members of the 'Tolstoy Commune'. Also included are photos of the house and other buildings, with some shots of a building on fire. Some photos are labelled and dated on the reverse, 1905-1912. Biographical note: Vladimir Chertkov, Leo Tolstoy’s secretary and friend, travelled to England in 1897, after his exile by the Russian government. He settled at Tuckton House, where Tolstoy had enjoyed a summer holiday in 1894. Tchertkov brought with him thirty or so other emigres, mainly middle-class artisans and professionals, who were resolved to publish the works of their mentor, Tolstoy. Chertkov put his money, energy and leadership skills into the remarkable Free Age Press, run by A. C. Fifield. Over the next few years, this small press produced 424 million pages of Tolstoy’s writing. Its propagating work was then carried on by the publisher C. W. Daniel, also a fan of Tolstoy, and who acquired the rights of the Free Age Press around 1906.

Many portraits, businesses (banks, breweries, barber shops, factories, groceries, etc.), and several views of the Italian neighborhood (Federal Street, Fitzwater Street, Eight Avenue, Christian Street, Carpenter Street, and others).
