        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

1906. first edition. Arthur Rackham's Peter Pan in a Wonderful Binding by Cedric ChiversCHIVERS, Cedric, binder. RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator. BARRIE, J.M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (From “The Little White Bird”). With Drawings by Arthur Rackham. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1906. First trade edition. Quarto (9 7/16 x 7 3/16 inches; 240 x 182 mm.). xii, 125, [1] pp. Color frontispiece and forty-nine color plates (collected at the end of the text) mounted on heavy brown paper, with descriptive tissue guards. Four black and white drawings (two on the title and one each on p. 1 and p. 14). Bound ca. 1906 by Cedric Chivers of Bath (stamp-signed on rear turn-in) in full brown morocco with two circular green morocco onlays and a rectangular vellucent panel in the center (4 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches; 115 x 48 mm.) featuring a watercolor drawing depicting an elderly Fairy (from plate 13) framed by gilt and with four vellucent medallions (1 inch; 25 mm. in diameter) in the corners featuring four watercolor drawings from various color-plates including the Mouse from plate 32 and a fairy from plate 34. Single line gilt border on covers, heart-shaped gilt design on back. Smooth spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt. Gilt ruled turn-ins, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A very fine and stunning example of Cedric Chivers at his best.Who created the vellucent illustrations for the panels remains a mystery but “in his large bindery at Portway, Bath, [Cedric] Chivers employed about forty women for folding, sewing, mending, and collating work, and in addition, five more women worked in a separate department, to design, illuminate, and colour vellum for book decoration, and to work on embossed leather. These five were Dorothy Carl[e]ton Smyth, Alice Shepherd, Miss J.D. Dunn, Muriel Taylor, and Agatha Gales. Most Vellucent bindings were designed by H. Granville Fell, but the woman most frequently employed for this kind of work was probably Dorothy Carl[e]ton Smyth” (Marianne Tidcombe, Women Bookbinders 1880-1920, p. 86).J.M. Barrie’s novel The Little White Bird (1902) “contains the first sketches for Peter Pan. The narrator is ‘a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor’, an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David becomes a substitute in his affections. He explains to David that ‘all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens; and that the reason there are bars on nursery windows and a tall fender by the fire is because very little people sometimes forget that they no longer have wings, and try to fly away through the window or up the chimney.’ The central chapters of the book tell the story of one such child, Peter Pan, who ‘escaped from being a human when he was seven days old…and flew back to the Kensington Gardens’…The Peter Pan chapters of The Little White Bird were re-issued in 1906 as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with colour plates by Arthur Rackham; this was the book which first made Rackham’s work famous. It should not be confused with Peter and Wendy (1911), Barrie’s novelization of the play Peter Pan” (The Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature).Latimore and Haskell, p. 27. Riall, p. 74.

        Night Fall in the Ti-Tree

Melbourne and London: Imprinted now by hand at the sign of the Rabbit, 1906. Octavo, with coloured woodcuts by Geraldine Rede and Violet Teague throughout; a near fine copy, printed wrappers, silk-ties restored. A rare and beautiful livre d'artiste by the artists Geraldine Rede and Violet Teague, in which haiku verses are elegantly illustrated with Japanese-style woodblocks. The prints for this work were made in 1905 and they are recognised as the earliest examples of colour woodblock prints produced in Australia. The book was an ambitious experiment, with printmaking by artists still in its infancy in Australia. Most progress in the medium was made in Melbourne, but etching rather than woodcut or linocut was the favoured form. It was not until the 1920s that woodcuts and linocuts emerged as a dominant craft, particularly amongst women artists such as Margaret Preston. Violet Teague (1872-1951) was born in Melbourne and studied for three years in Brussels and for a year at Herkomer's School in England. Herkomer was a great experimenter in the field of printmaking and Teague was no doubt influenced by his teaching. She achieved some fame as a portrait painter but left few examples of her work as a printmaker apart from this book. Geraldine Rede (c. 1874-1943) was also from Victoria and studied at the National Gallery School Melbourne in the late 1890s. Her illustrations in Night Fall in the Ti-Tree were strongly influenced by contemporary fashion for Japonisme and the sinuous line of Art Nouveau. Australian eucalypts and ti-trees, with their long elegant lines, lent themselves well to the new style. The two artists in their production of this book adopted the holistic philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement: the edition was not only designed, illustrated and printed by the women, but also hand-bound by them.

The Real West Coast: A New Picture of a Rumour-Damaged Country

Extensive archive concerning the founding and early administration of the Wolfskehl Prize

1906-14. <p>[Fermat, Pierre de (1601-65).] Wolfskehl Prize. Extensive archive consisting of 35 manuscript and 5 printed documents concerning the founding and early administration of the Prize, established by a bequest left by Paul Wolfskehl (1856-1906), to be awarded to the first person to solve Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem of 1637. Ca. 140pp. Göttingen and Darmstadt, 1906-14. Various sizes. Very good to fine. The documents include numerous signatures and signed statements of famous Göttingen mathematicians David Hilbert, Felix Klein, Hermann Minkowski, Carl Runge and Edmund Landau, among others (see list below for details). From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).</p><p>The Original Mathematical-Scientific Archive Relating to the Most Celebrated Problem in Number Theory, Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem. The Wolfskehl Prize, intended for the first person to publish a complete proof of Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem, was established in 1907 by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences; it was awarded 90 years later to British mathematician Andrew Wiles, who published his proof in 1995. The worldwide fame of Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem in the last century is due in no small part to the Wolfskehl Prize; as Alf van der Poorten, author of <i>Notes on Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem</i> (1996), remarked, "It&#39;s the romance, and size, of this prize that gave the FLT its popularity and notoriety" (quoted in Barner, p. 1301).</p><p>The story of Fermat&#39;s celebrated "Last Theorem" is among the most famous in the history of mathematics: Fermat owned a copy of the 1621 <i>Arithmetica</i> of Diophantus, edited by Claude Bachet, and was in the habit of noting his own number theory propositions in the margins of the book. In 1637 Fermat made a marginal note next to one of the problems put forth by Diophantus, stating, in essence, that equations of the form xn + yn = zn have no whole-number solutions when n is greater than 2. In his note Fermat stated that he had found a truly marvelous proof (demonstratio mirabilis), which would not fit into the narrow margin of the book. Fermat died in 1665 without revealing his proof, and today some scholars doubt that he actually achieved it. In 1670 Fermat&#39;s son published a second edition of Bachet&#39;s Diophantus that incorporated all of Fermat&#39;s marginal notes and propositions. Most of Fermat&#39;s propositions were proved during the 18th century, but the Last Theorem remained a stumbling block for succeeding generations of mathematicians, and by the early 19th century it had gained a reputation as perhaps the world&#39;s most baffling mathematical mystery. "Simple, elegant, and [seemingly] impossible to prove, Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem captured the imaginations of amateur and professional mathematicians for over three centuries. For some it became a wonderful passion. For others it was an obsession that led to deceit, intrigue, or insanity" (Aczel).</p><p>Among the many mathematicians, professional and amateur, who came under the spell of the Last Theorem was Paul Wolfskehl, a Darmstadt physician from a wealthy family who took up the study of mathematics in the 1880s after he began exhibiting symptoms of multiple sclerosis. In January 1905, about a year and a half before his death, Wolfskehl altered his will to include a bequest of 100,000 gold marks to the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (Königliche Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften) for the establishment of the Wolfskehl Prize, to be awarded to the first person either to solve Fermat&#39;s Last Theorem or to supply a valid counterexample. The bequest originally amounted to about $1.5 million in today&#39;s money, but was reduced by inflation and currency devaluation to $50,000, the amount that Wiles was awarded in 1997. </p><p>Upon receiving notice of Wolfskehl&#39;s bequest, the Göttingen Academy appointed a commission, consisting of mathematicians Ernst Ehlers, David Hilbert, Felix Klein, Hermann Minkowski and Carl Runge, and began working on formulating the rules and conditions of the prize. The archive we are offering documents this process in detail, and also offers a great deal of information on the early years of the Wolfskehl Commission to 1914. For further details, including a listing of all the documents in the archive, please contact us. </p>

1906. Öl auf Leinwand, links unten signiert und datiert "Eug. Bandell 1906", verso auf dem Keilrahmen von der Künstlerin nochmals signiert und datiert sowie betitelt. 84,5:64 cm. Literatur: S. Sumera, Eugenie Bandell (1858-1918), Eine Frankfurter Malerin - das Spätwerk. Magisterarbeit, Univ.

Autograph musical quotation signed and dated 1951

3 measures in score from a work identified by the composer as "The Hemingway Bull Fight Ballet." Large folio (ca. 380 x 302 mm). Notated in black ink on card stock. Inscribed to the photographer "Sandy" [Sanford] Roth (1906-1962) and his wife Beulah, "in serene and reverend admiration of the present master photographer of this planet, Sandy, from their devoted friend George Antheil." Slightly worn, soiled and browned. . An unusual and impressive quotation by the "Bad Boy of Music," a controversial figure in the expatriate avant-garde community of American composers in Europe in the first half of the 20th century. "The Hemingway Bull Fight Ballet" is not in Antheil&#39;s works list in Grove. Roth was an internationally-known photographer whose works appeared in publications such as Time, Life, Look, Fortune, Paris Match, and Der Stern. His subjects included James Dean and many other noted individuals, Antheil among them.

Scenes and Characters of the English XVIIIth Century, all, with the exception of one or two Portraits, Original

, 1906 1906. Quarter Leather. Very Good Plus. A complete manuscript book containing 34 pen and sepia wash pictures, each captioned on the facing leaf by the hand of Colwyn Edward Vulliamy (1886 - 1971). Vulliamy was a Welsh biographer and historian. Educated privately, he studied art under Stanhope Forbes. In World War One he served in France, Macedonia and Turkey. Post-war, in addition to biography, he produced several mysteries and dabbled in humor writing. This album beautifully combines his affinity for history and humor, and one could only wish he had devoted more of his later energies to such caricature. The subject matter is of some historic remove from Vulliamy, but surely the album reflects the surge of interest in the eighteenth century that occurred at the turn of the twentieth century. Here one will find both a wistful and jaundiced look back -- Vulliamy doesn't look away from the seedy and ugly aspects of Georgian England. His style and wash media are true to the period, and but for the paper stock and the binding, one could be easily deceived into thinking the artwork was in fact contemporary with the period depicted. The front endpaper is signed and dated by the author, and he again initials and dates the closing illustrated leaf. Quarter leather over pebbled cloth binding, measuring 9.5 by 13.5 cm, or 5.25 by 3.75 inches. Some spotting on the black cloth. Otherwise, quite fresh and clean.

THE WRITINGS OF HENRY DAVID THOREAU with a leaf of manuscript mentioning Walden Pond

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. Manuscript Edition. Hardcover. Partial separation along fold on the manuscript page. One volume slightly chipped along spine. Near Fine. Large octavo (6" x 8-3/4"), 20 volumes bound by Stikeman and Co. in 3/4 brown morocco leather with gilt-lettered and decorated spines. Illustrated with 3 portraits and 101 gravures after photographs by Herbert Gleason. BAL 20145: copy #396 of 600 numbered sets SIGNED by the publisher with an inlaid leaf of Thoreau&#39;s original holograph manuscript written on both sides of the sheet regarding the Fall coloring of trees. The manuscript in this copy is from Thoreau&#39;s important essay "Autumnal Tints," perhaps the best essay written by anyone on the subject of the color of the changing fall leaves. In part: "Notwithstanding that the red maple is the most intense scarlet of any of our trees, the sugar maple has been the most celebrated, and Michaux, in his Sylva, does not speak of the autumnal color of the former.... Walden&#39;s hilly shore too is now most beautifully painted chiefly, with small trees of this species which extend their red banners over the water, and here and there on one side slender young black birches rise a clear pale yellow quite distinct amid the evergreens and other trees on the steep shore." Much more. Thoreau manuscript material is increasingly scarce and more expensive to obtain, nearly always being found as it is here, bound into the Manuscript Edition. This edition marks the first printing of Thoreau&#39;s entire Journal.
