The Life of Takla Haymanot in the Version of Dabra Libanos and The Miracles of Takla Haymanot in the Version of Dabra Libanos and The Book of the Riches of Kings. The Ethiopic Texts from the British Museum Ms. Oriental 723 ( Two volumes,).

Privately Printed, London 1906 - Hardcovers. 2 Volumes. Elephant Folios. (14 inches x 15 inches,) Vol. I: (viii) + lxiv +1 - 243 + cxii interleaved plates (text and plate pages printed on one side only). Vol. II, 244 - 396 + 142pp. Original cloth with blind stamping to covers and gilt titling to spines. Marbled endpapers and edges. One hundred and sixty-five full page colour plates. Edition limited to 250 numbered copies. An extraordinarily lavish production. The volumes are simply huge - Vol. I weighs about 30lbs and Vol. II 24lbs. This extraordinary privately-printed edition was especially commission by Lady Meux, following a visit made to her in 1902 by His Highness Ras Makonnen, (then) 'Governor of Harrar and the Dependencies of Ethiopia.' During the visit Ras Makonnen had expressed wonder at the magnificence of the Ethiopic manuscripts held in Lady Meux's museum, and she subsequently decided to reproduce 'an illustrated Ethiopic manuscript of a character which would be of special interest to His Highness ' She settled on these, the two most famous hagiographies of the renowned Ethiopian Saint, Takla Haymanot, from a magnificent manuscript (Oriental 723) held in the British Museum. The volumes comprise plates reproducing the pages of the illuminated manuscripts, English translations, and a typeset version of the Ethiopic text. A superb set. A little light rubbing at hinges, edges and points, but both volumes are near fine, and genuinely rare thus, being seldom - if ever - seen in such excellent condition due to their size, weight and age. Please NOTE: This set weighs over 50 pounds and thus shipping to any destination will be at cost. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Ransome, Arthur.

      - London: Anthony Treherne, [1906]. Squat 12mo, 96pp. With a frontispiece and 10 plates (complete). Several plates repaired, browning offset from plates to text. Original grey boards, upper cover and backstrip lettered in black and red, upper cover with a pasted-on plate of a snowy egret not repeated in the book. A very rare and extremely fragile book, professionally restored. Inscribed at the front: ÒBirthday Greetings to Harry Hayes from Virginia Miller 1908.Ó One in a series of six books listed as a series by Arthur Ransome titled ÒNature Books for ChildrenÓ, of which this was the third. According to the website ÒAll Things Arthur RansomeÓ, ÒIn 1906 Arthur Ransome was commissioned by a small publisher, Anthony Treherne & Company, to write a series of short books on "the seasons, the garden, ponds and streams, woods, fields, and country lanes." Only three of the planned six books were published before the publisher went bankrupt. According to Wayne Hammond in his Bibliography, Ransome called them 'three silly little nature books for children' and 'unlucky books'. They were certainly unlucky for Ransome, as he was paid nothing but a small advance. The three books which were published, The Child's Book of the Seasons, Pond and Stream, and Things In Our Garden, appear as entries A4-A6 in Hammond's Bibliography.Ó Hammond, Arthur Ransome: A Bibliography, 5.1. Cowen, A Ransome Book-Case, page 5. Note: two copies only are online and both seem to lack at least one plate. The correct count is a frontispiece and ten plates. The plates were printed on terrible paper, so they turn brown and crumble to the slightest touch, as well as offsetting to the opposite leaf. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Beknopte historie, van het Mogolsche keyzerryk, en de zuydelyke aangrensende ryken. Batavia, C.C. Renhard, 1758. Folio. With a woodcut device on title-page (VOC ship on a shield, flanked by Poseidon and Amphitrite, topped by an armillary sphere), folding letterpress genealogical table, 2 large woodcuts (plus 1 repeat) with letterpress text, representing the seals of 3 Mogul rulers (each with 2 concentric circles with 11 or 13 smaller circles inbetween, with the ruler's name in the centre and his predecessors numbered in the surrounding circles), a woodcut headpiece, tailpiece (plus repeats) and 3 large decorated initials (3 series). Modern blue paper wrappers.

Bijdragen taal-, land- en volkenkunde Ned.-Indie, LXI (1906), pp. 374-376; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 561. First edition of a history of the Mogul Empire and its southern possessions. The foreword notes that the anonymous author based his account of northern India partly on François Valentijn's history of the Dutch East Indies, Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724-1726), vol. IV, no. 2, but that he made many additions and corrections. For the southern regions, however, he turned to natives familiar with their antiquities ("ervarene inlanders in hare oudheden"). The addenda leaf, loosely inserted in this copy, is often lacking. The woodcut circles, on pp. 33, 36 & 39 represent seals of the Mogul rulers Eurangzeeb, Prince Mohamed Azem and finally Mahomed Sjah (1719-1748), with the names of their predecessors numbered. The book includes information on the Moguls' relations with the Persians, Afghans and others. The Mogul Empire was an imperial power that ruled most of the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th to the mid-19th centuries. At the height of its power, around 1700, it controlled most of the subcontinent and parts of what is now Afghanistan. After 1725 the empire declined rapidly. This was Renhard's most ambitious work as printer to the VOC at Batavia. It is mostly well printed from freshly cast type and gives an excellent overview of the printing office's materials, primarily 17th-century Dutch roman and italic types. It shows the considerable expansion of the press's stock in the preceding years. With the folding table slightly browned, a small hole in 1 leaf and a small marginal tear in the title-page, but generally in fine condition, with generous margins and including the errata leaf.

Autograph Letter Signed to G.W. Card on University of Adelaide letterhead

University of Adelaide: 23 September, 1906. Single sheet of note paper entirely in Mawson's hand, folded to 20.3 x 12.6 cm, "The University, Adelaide" letterhead, slight tear at old fold but very good. An attractive scientific letter from Douglas Mawson relating to an early and still unresolved controversy regarding uranium ores from Australia. The letter is addressed to "My dear Card"; given the contents, this is certainly G.W. Card of the NSW Department of Mines. Card gave the first ever account of Australian radioactive minerals in a report published in 1894, and became an authority in the field. Mawson graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Sydney in 1902, and his early work on geology led to his appointment as a lecturer in mineralogy and petrology at the University of Adelaide. He immediately became interested in the glacial geology of South Australia, but he also worked on radioactive minerals, identifying and describing the mineral davidite (containing titanium and uranium) in specimens from the region now known as Radium Hill, near Olary. That deposit was the first major radioactive ore body discovered in Australia. Mawson's letter relates to a controversy caused by the French mining engineer Charles Poulot, among other things credited with discovering the properties of carnotite, the major source for radium. In a 1909 paper by T.H. Laby, Poulot was quoted as saying that he had seen an enormous amount of apparently Australian ore from New England at a treatment works in Germany. The veracity of Poulot's assertion has been questioned, but as this 1906 letter asserts, it had already caused great consternation among the scientific fraternity even before Laby's paper was published. Indeed, Card had obviously approached Mawson about this bombshell, because the latter writes without preamble: 'How on earth did the 7 tons of radio-active ore leave Melbourne without general knowledge. Don't you think that M. Poulot has got the wrong details somehow or perhaps been "stuffed" by the German firm.' Mawson goes on to speculate on whether the ore being discussed has not, in fact, come from Austrian silver-lead mines, and discusses the valuable offers he has been made for uranium ores from 'London and New York brokers'. The letter concludes with a discussion of how discouraged Mawson is becoming regarding the ore from Olary. Olary was the site of some of Mawson's earliest significant scientific research, especially regarding glacial formation. On the controversy see David Branagan, 'Davidite and Other Early Events in Australia's Uranium Story', Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales, vol. 140).

        Typed Letter Signed

Washington, D.C.: December 9, 1906 One page typed on White House letterhead, blue typewriter ink, signed by Roosevelt in black ink. Very good or better, with three light horizontal creases, light tape residue to the extremities, light wear at the folds, a few light spots of faint soiling, adhesive residue from previous mounts to the verso, else fine and crisp. In this letter, Roosevelt introduces Rev. Dr. Francis E. Clark of the United Society of Christian Endeavor who "is visiting South America with the hope of aiding the Christian Endeavor movement and of increasing the growing friendliness and goodwill among the republics of the Western Hemisphere." He requests hospitality and "proper official courtesy" for Clark from the gentlemen of the Diplomatic and Consular Representatives of the United States in South and Central America during his South American visit. From his days as Assistant Secretary of the Navy through his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt's political career was closely tied with the politics of South and Central America. Only a month before writing this letter, Roosevelt made political history by being the first president to make an official diplomatic tour outside of the continental United States by travelling to Panama and Puerto Rico. In addition to observing the construction of the Panama Canal, where the posed working the controls of a large steam shovel for the now iconic photograph, Roosevelt made efforts to improve working conditions to ensure the safety of those working on the Panama Canal and to establish a civilian government in Puerto Rico without infringing on the protectorate's autonomy. Regardless of his level of involvement with the United Society of Christian Endeavor, this letter stands testament to Roosevelt's commitment to developing diplomatic relationships with Central and South American countries.. Signed by Author. Very Good.
