Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique. BOUND WITH Traite pratique de photographie stereoscopique

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1906. Boards. Near Fine. 2 titles in one volume. VIII, 248, [V]-VII, [1] pages + 20 plates + [249]-251 pages. Second title [1]-207 pages. Half calf over marbled boards. Large 8vo. 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Light browning to pages. Boards. The first title, "Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique," was originally issued with the 20 plates in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. Here the plates have been bound in. Both titles are scarce, with Fabre's work not present in the Epstean collection as of this writing. Both titles deal with the theory and practice of stereoscopy. This artform / photographic technique allows the photographer to take a photograph which can be viewed later in three dimensions. It is accomplished by taking the same image with 2 lenses slightly separated from one another, which when viewed through a stereoscope with similarly separated lenses allows the viewer to see depth in the image. A fascinating parlor trick since the 1850s and still something that wows the public who often hasn't seen it. Both titles are scarce, with fewer than a dozen examples in book form in library systems participating in Worldcat/OCLC.

Small collection of eight salesman's sample booklets for Cuban cigar labels

Detmold: "Gebrüder Klingenberg, lithographers". ca. 1906. "Group of sample Cuban cigar labels, 8 booklets in all with 68 various embossed labels, including labels, cigar bands, and sample wood grains for the interior of the cigar boxes. Cigar brands include Electa Superiores, Aguila de Cuba, Flor de Region, Isla de Oro, Baronet Imperiales, La Rosa Havanesa, Superfinos, Ordina Fina, and Tradition Superiores. Klingenberg was at the time the largest employer in Detmold and by the end of the 19th century was world-renown for its fine graphic design and color lithography. In the last two decades of the 19th century Klingenberg was best known for their work for the cigar industry, not only in Germany and on the continent, but also in the United States, Canada and Cuba. Contained in a large mailing envelope from Leipzig addressed to The California Wine Association, San Francisco. It is plausible that in the early years of the 20th century the firm was attempting to reach out into other sectors, notably the wine label business. "

MASTERPIECES OF THE UKIYOYE SCHOOL [ EIBUN UKIYOE-HA GASHU^]

1906 - SHIMBI SHOIN, publisher. MASTERPIECES SELECTED FROM THE UKIYOYE SCHOOL [EIBUN UKIYOE-HA GASHU]. Tokyo, Shimbi Shoin, Meiji 39-42, [1906-9]. 5 large folio volumes (19.5 x 13.5 inches), each bound in beautiful decorated silk over boards, secured with tassles, in the 5 original grass cloth clasped chitsu cases with printed silk title labels. This epitome of the Ukiyo-e school and its development, edited by Shiichi Tajima, et al., was and is a remarkable scholarly and artistic triumph of book-making and the finest production of its kind ever attempted. There are over 150 color woodcut reproductions in the set, some of which are said to have taken days to finish, since as many as 200 separate woodblocks were used to create the effects. This is the original edition of the set. Complete, including the magnificent triptych, plate number 155 [in volume 5], which was not included when the set was originally published in Japanese. The set is near fine, though the case are a bit worn (one clasp is missing). Unusual in any case, this set is almost completely unobtainable thus - in a complete English translation, by Professor Joseph King Goodrich. It would appear that as few as 100 copies of the translated set were published. Complete in five volumes:

Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtsabsorption; (Eingegangen 13. März 1906). (On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption).

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1906). No wrappers. Extracted from "Annalen der Physik" Vierte Folge. Bd. 20. Pp. 199-206. Clean and fine.. First printing of one of the papers for which Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. It was for the papers "Ueber einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt" of 1905 and "Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung...( Theory of light emission and absorption), the offered item, that Einstein received the prize: "for his services to theoretical physics and especially for his discoveryof the law of the photoelectrical effect" - his reward was not based on relativity."The quantum theory has affected virtually every branch of physics. Its earliest and one of its most significant developments was Einstein's application of the theory to what is known as the 'photo-electrical effect'....Einstein explained this effext by suggesting that the classical view that light is emitted in the form of continous waves must be abandoned. The photo-electrical effect could be explained only as an example of quantum action where the waves of light or X-rays are emitted in minute particles or bullets. It is he size of the bullet (the wave-lenght of the radiation) which determines the number of electrons ejected. It was for this, and not for the theory of relativity, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein's two fundamental papers on this subject are "Ueber einem Erzeugung...." 1905 and Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung (the paper offered here)" (PMM the note to 391).Weil: 12 (with an asterix, denoting a major paper) - Boni:12

        OTHELLO UNVEILED

The Rentala House, Madras 1906 - Dimensions: 23cm x 15cm approx. A very rare First Edition copy of "Othello Unveiled" by the Indian Shakespearean scholar, Rentala Venkata Subbarau. Published in 1906 by Rentala House, Mylapore, Madras, the book accompanies "Hamlet Unveiled", published later. Subbarau also wrote "Kamala¿s Letters to Her Husband". An extremely rare book in its own right, with modern re-prints being almost the only versions available on websites such as Abebooks. The copy we are offering has a superb provenance. The volume was gifted by the author to pre-eminent Shakespearean scholar, A. C. Bradley and is inscribed to the front free endpaper "To A. C. Bradley, Esq, LLD, Litt. D, with the compliments of the author. 14th March, 1906." Andrew Cecil Bradley (1851-1935) was Professor of Poetry at Oxford University for five years during which he published his two most important works "Shakespearean Tragedy" (in 1904) and "Oxford Lectures on Poetry" (in 1909). The book contains quite a lot of pencil annotations that could well have been made by Bradley, though we cannot be certain. This copy also contains another (presumably later) inscription just above that to Bradley that reads "Marjory W. Baker, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford". Just a bookplate to the front paste-down. A fair bit of wear/rubbing/fading/marking to the cloth covers. Spine very slightly skewed which has caused the binding to be slightly stretched to page gutters. Internal pages good (some uncut) with just slight yellowing. Binding tight. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Dog Book. Ten Parts in One Volume.

New York, Doubleday, Page & Company 1905, 1906, (Published Feb 1905 through July 1906).First Edition. - Deep red cloth hardcover 7 1/2" x 10 1/2", Good/No Dust Jacket, 746 pages, complete ten parts of the Dog Book as originally published in 1905 through 1906, bound into one 3 3/4" thick volume. The gray paper cover for the first part is also bound into the back of the book as an example, and all the interior parts of the book look clean except for minor margin water stain here and there, few finger marks, and a margin tear at first illustration list. Book is tight, hinges are intact and tight. This gray paper cover states that this is complete in ten parts with three hundred (black and white) photographic illustrations. These are beautifully done on glossy, and still bright, either full page photos or combining 2 or 3 on one page. The red hardcover looks to be a library type binding, sturdy cloth with only gilt title and author on spine, plus two printed numbers on the bottom spine, but this was not a library book as such, there are no library markings. The front cover and spine are heavily spotted and edgeworn, the back is very faded at the top with some sort of paper remnants on the bottom third. Edge rubbing all around but not worn through. Probably should have had this rebound, but I admired the binding job which has lasted almost a hundred years. Only marks I saw were a pencilled word and a number on the gray bound-in paper cover, no names, etc. Page edges are untrimmed and darkened. A great reference on dogs, and also very interesting to read in short sessions. Good/None. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The photographs include portraits of Chertkov, his family and other members of the 'Tolstoy Commune'. Also included are photos of the house and other buildings, with some shots of a building on fire. Some photos are labelled and dated on the reverse, 1905-1912. Biographical note: Vladimir Chertkov, Leo Tolstoy?s secretary and friend, travelled to England in 1897, after his exile by the Russian government. He settled at Tuckton House, where Tolstoy had enjoyed a summer holiday in 1894. Tchertkov brought with him thirty or so other emigres, mainly middle-class artisans and professionals, who were resolved to publish the works of their mentor, Tolstoy. Chertkov put his money, energy and leadership skills into the remarkable Free Age Press, run by A. C. Fifield. Over the next few years, this small press produced 424 million pages of Tolstoy?s writing. Its propagating work was then carried on by the publisher C. W. Daniel, also a fan of Tolstoy, and who acquired the rights of the Free Age Press around 1906.
