      - RACKHAM,ARTHUR - IMITATION. ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR: PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS. Offered here is an original watercolor by a talented hand duplicating a Rackham from the 1906 first edition of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The caption in the book reads: " After this the birds said they would help him no more in his mad enterprise." Peter is standing in the water with two swans. His kite has fallen in the water as well. A tree full of birds is prominent in the foreground. The image measures 11" wide x 17" high, signed in the lower left. Matted and in fine condition. "Bert" had also began courting King's younger sister, Jennie in 1900. King participated in a public subscription to raise a statue in Harper's honour and who was the inspiration for the statue of Sir Galahad which stands before the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. The young woman, Bessie Blair, fell through the ice of the Ottawa River. Harperís death affected King greatly and the result was this first book. "He knew the importance of earning a reputation for being non-partisan and with the help of his university friend Henry Albert "Bert" Harper, whom he appointed assistant editor, the [Labour] Gazette soon became a respected reference," "In the Gatineau hills of Quebec, north of Ottawa, he and Bert Harper had long walks, were enchanted by the area around Lac Kingsmere, read uplifting literature, and shared their spiritual concerns. Their friendship ended in December 1901 when Harper died trying to save a young woman from drowning. King wrote a touching memoir, The secret of heroism, but he never again gave himself over to a close friendship. " quoted from DCB online [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Collection of Original Photographs of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906

Photo album of original photographs of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906. Oblong octavo. Cloth. Contains 23 photographs, either black and white or silverprints, each either 7" x 5" or 5" x 4", all tipped-into a blank photo album. Most of the photographs are in fine condition, in the slightly worn album. Written in an unknown, probably later hand on the first page: "1906 San Francisco, Calif. earthquake, April 18 -- lasted 48 seconds, 700 lives lost! These pictures sent to us from Uncle Ed Gilson that lived in Calif." Although we found near contemporary records of a San Francisco county clerk with this name, we could determine nothing of substance about Gilson. The images show the aftermath of the earthquake which destroyed a vast portion of the city. There are pictures of ruined buildings, torn up streets, and refugee camps. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, both as a result of the strong quake and even more the ensuing four days of fires which destroyed large portions of the city. The number of casualties was actually several thousands, although at the time city officials reported only 375 deaths (in the age before Federal aid it was more important to put up a good front and keep real estate prices high). Much of the city was rebuilt from the ground up and these photos convey both the scale of the destruction and the pluckiness of the survivors, who in several images, calmly observe the ruins of their city. .

        The Adventures Of Ji

S.W. Partridge & Co - 5" x 7.5" black title on blue cloth with colour illustration to front board of bipedal fieldmouse with little boy in Victorian dress. No date, 1st edition 1906. Pages are pretty tanned and vignetted, spine cracked at feps with mild cracking in one or two other places. Slight damage to top of outside of spine which is very faded, neat previous owners's name and date (Xmas 1914) to endpaper, 3"x1.5" label stuck to free ep, presumably obscuring inscription, otherwise Very Good. Little known among the reading public though sought after by collectors, G.E. Farrow enlists the skills of the extraordinary artist, Charles Tresidder. Dozens of 'Beatrix- Potter-on-acid', type illustrations throughout the book make this an amazing find. Photos don't do the quality or imaginative genius of the illustrator justice. An amazing book. There are currently no copies for sale, at least none listed or advertised, anywhere on the internet. In fact, the rarity of this book is such that there are to my knowledge, only records of three other copies; one in The British Library, one in Oxford University Library and one in The National Library of Scotland. This is a very, very rare book and despite its faults still represents to the serious collector with the only current possibility of acquiring an impossibly rare find. Additional photos available on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS. Illustrated Catalogue of Locomotives. M. Baird & Co., Philadelphia.

Press of J. B. Lippincott & Co., (n d), Philadelphia: - Illustrated with wood engraved frontis depicting the 'Baldwin Locomotive Works' factory, 11 intratextual cuts & 16 pasted-in photographs of divers Baldwin locomotives. The Baldwin Locomotive Works, an American builder of railroad locomotives, was located in Pennsylvania, originally Philadelphia, then moving in 1906 to nearby Eddystone. The company was the largest US producer of custom, made-to-order steam locomotives. Founded in the early 1830s by Matthais Baldwin, the firm stopped producing locomotives in 1956, ceasing business in 1972, having produced over 70,000 engines, the vast majority powered by steam. This one of the firm's first photograhically illustrated catalogues, a lavish production, issued in the ealy 1870s as Baldwin overtook Rogers as the premier locomotive manufacturer in the United States. Herein will be found photographs of their divers products, including [fill in with some names of locomotives]. While not a particularly rare catalogue, it's importance & desirablility lies in documenting the ascent to prominence of this significant US heavy equipment manufacturer, as well as being an early trade catalogue illustrated with actual photographs. Overall VG (slightly shaken/some shelfwear). Original publisher's pebbled terra-cotta cloth binding with gilt stamped lettering to spine & front board. Beveled edges. 4to: 11" x 7-5/8". 1st edition (Romaine, p. 301). Ca 1871 - 72. 134 pp. T.p. printed in red & black. Text within rectangular red-rule border. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

All Four Parts of "Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration" that were published on the Wiener Werkstatte. Four Volumes

(Darmstadt: Koch. 1906-1909). First. First editions. Four volumes. Thin quartos. Uniformly bound in original white cloth with Wiener Werkstatte insignia on the front boards. Endpapers illustrated in color by Koloman Moser. Heavily illustrated. All four volumes are fine. Very rare collection of four volumes about the Wiener Werkstatte from the library of Austrian artist Egon Schiele with his estate stamp on the front free endpaper of three of the four volumes ("Nachlass Egon Schiele," which conforms to the estate stamps on his posthumously sold artwork). Schiele died at age 28 of the Spanish flu epidemic. The volumes and contents are as follows:1905: "Wiener Werkstatte." Josef Hoffmann und Koloman Moser, pages 1 - 46.1905: Josef Hoffmann - Kolo Moser. "Die moderne in Wien," pages 521 - 564.1906: Josef Hoffmann - Kolo Moser, pages 149 - 192. 1909: "Schonheit als Weltanschauung (Cabaret Fledermaus)," pages 153 - 207.The plates exhibit a perfect overview of all the items produced by the Wiener Werkstatte: furniture, jewelry, dishes, earthenware, leatherware, boxes, bindings, graphic design, glass-painting, lamps, etc. One article is dedicated to the Cabaret Fledermaus showing the interior design, the graphic design of the program, etc.In 1906 Schiele applied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Vienna, where Gustav Klimt had once studied, and which was heavily influenced by the Wiener Werkstatte, and where presumably Schiele himself was exposed to and heavily influenced by the style.Individual issues are occasionally found, usually rebound. This set of all four volumes devoted to the Wiener Werkstatte, in original bindings and from the library of Egon Schiele, is exceptional. .
