The Dead Heart of Australia. A Journey around Lake Eyre in the Summer of 1901-1902

London: John Murray, 1906. Thick octavo, with six folding coloured maps, a full-page map (not included in the list of maps and plates), and 16 plates; uncommonly fine and bright in the primary tan pictorial cloth, a few bumps. Primary issue: dedicated to the geologists of Australia. First edition, the primary issue: this issue has always been preferred for the evocative heart-shaped photographic illustration of desert stones inset on the upper board. This important and much-sought book, rare in anything like fine condition, records Gregory's expedition to the central Australian deserts of the Lake Eyre Basin with students and colleagues from the University of Melbourne. Gregory's Dead Heart Expedition was the first major scientific exploration of the new century and made important contributions to the understanding of the inhospitable region. He was the first to use the phrase "Dead Heart" to describe Australia's arid interior, an expression which has since entered the language.

History of the State of California and Biographical Record of the Sacramento Valley, California

Chapman Publishing Company, Chicago, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Chapman Publishing Company, Chicago, 1906. First Edition. Good. This 9.0 x 11.75, 1720 page, thirteen pound seven ounce book is in good condition with some very evident condition issues to consider. The heavy leather-covered boards are still fully intact to the binding but the leather has begun to crack front and back where the hinges swing the cover from the text. There are a few small sections where the outer leather has worn away and the reddish coloring shows beneath the black leather surface. The top front corner has the leather broken and frayed from the corner for about one inch. The back cover shows a one-inch long gouge that has broken through the surface of the leather and into the interior of the binding. The spine leather shows some hairline cracks to the covering but these again are not severe and the spine is still solid and intact. There are a few other chips to the black leather cover but really the cover is still very much secure. All edges are gilt. The interior features decorative endpapers. The ffep has a dog-eared top corner. The interior generally shows signs of age and wear but is still in very good condition, with the tissue guards on the numerous biographical portraits still present. The value of this book is in its biographical information, and Guinn has devoted 1500 pages to biographies to prominent men and women from an earlier era of California. This book has long been a prime source of information on the Sacramento Valley and its early residents.

Památky kovanych praci XVI. az XVIII. Století v Hradci Králové. Czech art of Iron and Metal work from the 16th to the 18th century.

Böhm, Prague 1906 - Oblong quarto. Unpaginated. Original decorative wrappers with gold lettering on front cover. Publisher's device on title-page. Decorative tailpiece. Title-page and text in dark green lettering. Splendid photo-illustrated survey of the Czech art of iron and metal work from the 16th to the 18th century. Use of iron was mainly utilitarian until the Middle Ages, it became widely used for decoration in the period between the 16th and 19th century. From the 16th century onwards, ironwork became highly ornate especially in the Baroque and Rococo periods. The Baroque style changed the character of the Czech countryside (churches and chapels in Czech countryside are mostly Baroque). Czech Baroque architecture is considered to be a unique part of the European cultural heritage thanks to its extensiveness and extraordinariness. In the first third of the 18th century the Czech lands (especially Bohemia) were one of the leading artistic centers of the Baroque style. Illustrated with 17 striking heliogravure plates, this volume showcases some of the best and most beautiful examples of decorative and sculptural Czech metal- and ironwork (locks, gates, fences, railings, etc.). Closed tear at lower part of spine. Text in Czech. Wrappers in overall very good to near fine, interior in near to fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A Choice of Books from the Library of Isabella Stewart Gardner

Merry Mount Press 1906 - Bound in faded marbeled paper-covered boards with an olive cloth spine with a paper label. A very good copy worn, chipped, and nicked along the delicate paper edges and along the cloth spine, especially at the top edges. The paper label on the spine has all the lettering, but is chipped at the top right corner and nicked at the middle edges. Printed on quality laid paper with deckle edges by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press. This copy is inscribed to "Stanley Lothrop from Isabella Stewart Gardner Dec. 1909" on the front free endpaper. Isabella Gardner has signed her name brightly in blue fountain pen ink and written Stanley Lothrop and the date in a black ink. It is likely that she originally signed the book in blue ink as it was her own copy in her library; then when she presented the book to Stanley Lothrop, she used a pen with black ink. Stanley Lothrop was the director of The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and was formerly connected with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He was a Lecturer in Fine Arts in the American Academy in Rome; he was also a delegate of the American Red Cross in Italy. Louis Comfort Tiffany created the Foundation at his home, Laurelton Hall, at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, which he donated to establish the Art Institute along with eighty acres of land and buildings and an endowment of more than $1,000,000. (New York Times, Oct. 20, 1919) A significant association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtabsorption. WITH: Das Prinzip von der Erhaltung der Schwerpunktsbewgung und die Tragheit der Energie

Barth, Leipzig 1906 - FIRST EDITION of two important Einstein papers, including one of the two papers on his Noble Prize winning work on the photoelectric effect. On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption: A continuation and development of Einstein's revolutionary first paper in 1905 on the photoelectric effect ("On a Heuristic Point of View about the Creation and Conversion of Light"). "In a companion paper [to "On a Heuristic Point."], published in 1906, Einstein exposed appeal to the quantum as fundamentally counter to the ethos of classical physics: 'the theoretical bases on which Planck's radiation theory rests are different from those of Maxwell's theory'. Planck had not initially intended to quantify light-radiation itself, but Einstein demonstrated that his own 'light-quantum hypothesis' was implicit in Planck's earlier work. In viewing radiation not as a continuous wave, but as composed of small packets of energy (later called photons), Einstein was again shaking the foundations of classical physics" (Honner, The Description of Nature, 31). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Corpuscular-wave dualism for photons. Explanation of the photoelectric effect using the quantum hypothesis of Planck. Nobel prize to A. Einstein awarded in 1921 'for services to Theoretical Physics, and especially of he law of the photoelectric effect.'" Weil *12. The Principle of Conservation of Motion of the Center of Gravity and the Inertia of Energy: Einstein's further development of E=mc2. Einstein boldly uses his relationship to insist that the conservation of mass is a special case of the conservation of energy and broadens the law to include not only mechanical, but electromagnetic processes as well. Weil 13. IN: Annalen der Physik, Vol. 20, pp. 199-206; 627-633. Leipzig: Barth, 1906. Octavo, modern full green morocco. Rippling to the first few leaves of volume (not affecting Einstein papers). Provenance: with library stamp on series title from the prestigious Gmelin Institute (after 1996, part of the Max Planck Institute). Very handsomely bound. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Scorn of Women: In Three Acts

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906 First edition, first printing. Publisher's white cloth spine over maroon cloth boards, front board stamped in white, spine lettered in black, top edge gilt. About near fine, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, front board lettering rubbed, light spot of soiling to rear board, sturdy binding, ownership stamp to the front pastedown, bright and clean interior. Overall, a tight and attractive copy. Scarce. BAL 11898. Set in Dawson, Northwest Territory, in 1897, Scorn of Women is a theatrical adaptation of a short story of the same name from his 1901 collection The God of His Fathers. Like many of London's writings, Scorn of Women addresses the trials and tribulations of life in the Yukon Territory during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890's. Specifically, this tale features Floyd Vanderlipp, an "Eldorado king," who lived the dream of "striking it rich" in the Yukon. While he is spared from the physical and financial burdens that most faced during the Gold Rush, Vanderlipp, whom London describes as "the sort of man who women of the right sort can tie into knots," is plagued in his own right by three beautiful women. The plot, which takes place over the course of thirteen hours, is divided into three parts: Act I "Alaska Commercial Company's Store at Dawson," Act II "Anteroom of Pioneer Hall," and Act III "Freda Moloof's Cabin.". 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        Lord Randolph Churchill

Macmillan & Company, Ltd., New York 1906 - First U.S. edition, only printing. This is Churchill's first biographic work, concentrating heavily on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. It was very well received. At the time, the young Winston Churchill still saw himself in the shadow of his once-influential father. Today it is the son who is favored with lasting fame. Here is a very good set of the first U.S. edition. The U.S. edition is visually similar but aesthetically superior to the British, having gilt top page edges and a lightly scored cloth binding. Both volumes have extremely well-preserved red covers and spines with very little wear, square corners, and superior spines with excellent shelf presentation. The top edge gilt is still bright on both volumes. Volume II has some trivial soiling to the front face and some trivial wear at the top right hinge. Both volumes have very slightly darkened spines. The contents are superlative - clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges of the text block look unusually good. Overall, an extremely nice, collector worthy set. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.2, Woods A8(ab) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First US edition, published the same year as the London edition. A lovely copy in the rare dust jacket. Barrie asked Rackham to illustrate not the play Peter Pan (which remained unpublished until 1928) but make a new book from those chapters from The Little White Bird (1902) that had first introduced the character.

PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS - SIGNED

London Hodder and Stoughton 1906 - First edition. 4to. Russet cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. This book was a gift from Arthur Rackham to his brother in law Robert Starkie. Signed on the half title "From Arthur Rackham" A very good copy indeed. Brown endpapers with map of Kensington Gardens on front free endpaper. Fifty colour plates mounted onto art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. With the exception of the frontispiece all the plates are mounted together at the end of the text. Arthur Rackham married Edyth Starkie in July 1903. Edyth's family were less than enthusiastic about the marriage and on the day of the wedding their suspicions were almost confirmed. Edyth's father having died some years previously, it was to be her brother Robert giving her away. As they arrived at the church they spotted the bride groom disappearing in a hansom cab. "There you are Edyth. He's left you already," exclaimed Robert. In fact Arthur was dashing home to collect the forgotten wedding ring. Presumably the men overcame their differences and this copy is the first of a series of books presented by Rackham to his brother in law. Generally considered to be Rackham's most desirable work, not least as it combines with J.M. Barrie's greatest work. It is most uncommon to find signed copies of this most important of Rackham's work. In 1902 J.M. Barrie wrote the novel "the Little White Bird", the central chapters of which tell of a child named Peter Pan, ".who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old.and flew back to Kensington Gardens." This part of the story was then developed by Barrie and the first book to appear with the title of Peter Pan was this 1906 version to which Arthur Rackham provided 50 magnificent colour illustrations. A contemporary review of this book published in "The World" reads "Mr Barrie has done what no one else has done since the inventor of "Alice", he has invented a new legend, a modern folk story which comprehends all the innermost secrets of the modern child, be he four or forty. Mr Rackham, for his part, has been bewitched in his cradle: he does not dream of fairies or hobgoblins, he knows them." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Justinian and Theodora. A Drama Being a Chapter of History and the One Gleam of Light During the Dark Ages

The Roycrofters, East Aurora 1906 - Double title-page decorated in black, red and yellow, and matching headpieces and colophon in black and yellow. Two signed portraits of Elbert and Alice Hubbard. 8vo. [199 x 149 x 15 mm]. 107, [2] pp. Contemporary binding of half reddish-pink goatskin, marbled paper sides. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the first and the second with small leaves and dots, the other panels with rows of leaves and dots, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. (Small worm holes at the head of the third panel on the spine and at the lower corner of the rear turn-in). Contained within the original card-board drop-over box, lined with felt and lettered on a paper label. A fine copy of this delightfully produced work, in an equally attractive Roycroft binding. It is No.15 of 106 copies printed on genuine Japan vellum and signed by Elbert Hubbard. Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) was a successful soap salesman for J.D. Larkin & Co. in Buffalo, whose life was changed on a visit to England and a meeting with William Morris. Returning to the States, he wrote of his travels and set up a press, the Roycroft, in emulation of the Kelmscott Press. In 1895 he founded a community, the Roycrofters, at East Aurora. Besides printing a long list of titles, they also operated a fine bindery, a furniture shop and shops producing modelled leather and hammered copper goods. In 1904 Hubbard married Alice Moore, a school teacher and noted feminist. In 1915 the two of them went down on the Lusitania. [Attributes: First Edition]
