The Encyclopaedia Japonica: A Dictionary of Commerce *FIRST EDITION*

Japan 1906. A massive Japanese commercial reference from the early 1900s. Approximately 2,000 pages. Text primarily in Japanese, other than the 18-page bilingual (Japanese/English) index and an intriguing bilingual fold-out sample of various contemporary export documents. Two items laid inside front board include a double-sided bilingual glossary of commonly used trade terms and a wonderful 22" wide by 16" high colour map of the world with trade routes to/from Japan indicated in red. Most text on the map is Japanese with some place names in both English and Japanese. Please note that library name is stamped through the blank upper right corner of the map. Elaborately gilt-decorated backstrip with title in Japanese and English bears considerable wear but is still handsome and, dare we say, mysterious. Per a handwritten inscription inside the back board, this copy was presented to representatives of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo on 24 October, 1908 by Mr. Shonojo Moriyama, Proprietor of the Dobun_____. Edges adorned with partially-faded marbling. Usual library markings. Above-average wear. Binding intact. A marvelously unique item. Shipping weight 3.5kg/8lb. First Edition Hard Cover 4to - over 9?" - 12" tall Ex-Library; First Edition. Fair

History of Japan Together With a Description of the Kingdom of Siam, 1690-92 (3 Volume Set)

James MacLehose, 1906. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. Translated from the German by J.G. Scheuchzer. Complete three volume set, reprint of the 1727 folio edition. Profusely illustrated with fold-out maps, drawings, facsimiles, figures, & other plates. Top edge gilt, rough fore and bottom edges. This set has been somewhat crudely re-backed, retaining the front & rear boards & most of the original spines, with new endpapers. This edition's OCLC WorldCat listing states "One thousand copies of this book have been printed ... of which one hundred copies are on hand-made paper". However, we cannot find anything resembling a limitation page in any of the three volumes, so it may be that the limitation page is missing. A little toning to the paper, with a crease or two to a couple of the fold-outs and light wear to the edges of the boards, otherwise this book is clean, binding tight, with no tears, and no markings.

.         Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique. BOUND WITH Traite pratique de photographie stereoscopique

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1906. Boards. Near Fine. 2 titles in one volume. VIII, 248, [V]-VII, [1] pages + 20 plates + [249]-251 pages. Second title [1]-207 pages. Half calf over marbled boards. Large 8vo. 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Light browning to pages. Boards. The first title, "Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique," was originally issued with the 20 plates in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. Here the plates have been bound in. Both titles are scarce, with Fabre's work not present in the Epstean collection as of this writing. Both titles deal with the theory and practice of stereoscopy. This artform / photographic technique allows the photographer to take a photograph which can be viewed later in three dimensions. It is accomplished by taking the same image with 2 lenses slightly separated from one another, which when viewed through a stereoscope with similarly separated lenses allows the viewer to see depth in the image. A fascinating parlor trick since the 1850s and still something that wows the public who often hasn't seen it. Both titles are scarce, with fewer than a dozen examples in book form in library systems participating in Worldcat/OCLC.

Published in London and Printed for Private Circulation only First Edition . 1906. - First edition hard back binding in original half navy leather, worn and faded gilt lettering between five raised bands to the spine, navy cloth boards, top edge gilt, navy marble end papers. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains [vi], 406 printed pages of text, [1, colophon], [1, blank]; two monochrome mounted photographic portraits; one of Thomas Bowlby and one of Mrs. Bowlby, one single-sided folding map showing the plan of the country in the neighbourhood of the Taku Forts. Thomas Bowlby was special correspondent to The Times with the British Expedition to China. While acting in that capacity, he was, with others, taken prisoner by the Chinese on the 18th September 1860, and died in captivity about a week later, after much suffering. This volume contains his diary from the 26th April to the 16th September 1860, his letters as special correspondent which appeared in The Times, and private letters relating to some of the incidents of the expedition, namely: Extracts from Mr. H. B. Loch's narrative; Extract from General Sir Hope Grant's Correspondence; Leading articles and correspondence from 'The Times'; Extracts from Private Letters; and a poem by Tom Taylor 'Bowlby of 'The Times'. Apparently unrecorded and not listed among the sources for Thomas Bowlby's biography in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies, which notes that his 'China dispatches were informative and popular with readers of The Times'. Rubbing to the edges and corners of the leather covers, slight cracking to the outside bottom third of the front hinge, this does not show internally which is in near Fine condition.

Small collection of eight salesman's sample booklets for Cuban cigar labels

Detmold: "Gebrüder Klingenberg, lithographers". ca. 1906. "Group of sample Cuban cigar labels, 8 booklets in all with 68 various embossed labels, including labels, cigar bands, and sample wood grains for the interior of the cigar boxes. Cigar brands include Electa Superiores, Aguila de Cuba, Flor de Region, Isla de Oro, Baronet Imperiales, La Rosa Havanesa, Superfinos, Ordina Fina, and Tradition Superiores. Klingenberg was at the time the largest employer in Detmold and by the end of the 19th century was world-renown for its fine graphic design and color lithography. In the last two decades of the 19th century Klingenberg was best known for their work for the cigar industry, not only in Germany and on the continent, but also in the United States, Canada and Cuba. Contained in a large mailing envelope from Leipzig addressed to The California Wine Association, San Francisco. It is plausible that in the early years of the 20th century the firm was attempting to reach out into other sectors, notably the wine label business. "

Text primarily in Japanese, other than the 18-page bilingual (Japanese/English) index and an intriguing bilingual fold-out sample of various contemporary export documents.         Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtsabsorption; (Eingegangen 13. März 1906). (On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption).

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1906). No wrappers. Extracted from "Annalen der Physik" Vierte Folge. Bd. 20. Pp. 199-206. Clean and fine.. First printing of one of the papers for which Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. It was for the papers "Ueber einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt" of 1905 and "Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung...( Theory of light emission and absorption), the offered item, that Einstein received the prize: "for his services to theoretical physics and especially for his discoveryof the law of the photoelectrical effect" - his reward was not based on relativity."The quantum theory has affected virtually every branch of physics. Its earliest and one of its most significant developments was Einstein's application of the theory to what is known as the 'photo-electrical effect'....Einstein explained this effext by suggesting that the classical view that light is emitted in the form of continous waves must be abandoned. The photo-electrical effect could be explained only as an example of quantum action where the waves of light or X-rays are emitted in minute particles or bullets. It is he size of the bullet (the wave-lenght of the radiation) which determines the number of electrons ejected. It was for this, and not for the theory of relativity, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein's two fundamental papers on this subject are "Ueber einem Erzeugung...." 1905 and Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung (the paper offered here)" (PMM the note to 391).Weil: 12 (with an asterix, denoting a major paper) - Boni:12
