        HUEFFER (Ford Madox)

The Pinafore Library: Christina’s fairy Book. By Ford Madox Hueffer. London: Alston Rivers, Ltd., N.D. [1906]. Post 16mo in half-sheets; half-title not called for; hand-coloured presentation leaf (unused) with series advertisements on verso precedes illustrated title-page printed in red and black; 3pp. integral advertisements at end; pp.[77]+[iii]; quarter blue rough buckram, cut flush, ledger-style, glazed printed paper boards, the front board printed pictorially in green, brown, drab, and black, the back board printed pictorially in blue, grey, pale brown, and green; end-papers printed pictorially in blue, the front and back end-papers bearing different designs, the back end-papers hand-coloured (v. note); rounded die-cut edges. Paper covering of boards chipped a little at corners, and covers generally a trifle rubbed; two or three scattered fox-spots internally, and slight cracking or scuffing of end-papers at hinges; a very good copy, nonetheless of a rare book that is almost unknown in commerce, as here, in its original binding. Issued as the first volume of ‘The Pinafore Library’, the advertisement leaf recording the other volumes as ‘The Travelling Companions’ by Lady Margaret Sackville; ‘Highways and Byways in Fairyland’ by Arthur Ransome; ‘The Fairy Doll’ by Netta Syrett; and ‘Who’s Who in Fairyland’ by Anne Pyne. Arguably Ford’s scarcest book, of which the bibliographer had never seen a copy, and no copy has been recorded at auction for well over the past thirty years. COPAC records copies only at the British Library, Oxford, Cambridge, and (possibly) the National Library of Scotland; whilst OCLC shows none in America, although Princeton has a copy added after the Naumburg collection check-list was published in the Princeton University Library Chronicle. The hand-colouring of the presentation leaf and back end-papers here has been very carefully and artistically done, but is presumably the work of a child. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Stockholm: Bokforlaget Svithiods Forlag, [1906-1907].. Thirty-five issues in twenty parts (volume 1) plus thirty- seven issues in twenty-one parts (volume 2). Variously paginated. Illustrations. Original pictorial wrappers, some colored but most duotone. Some moderate edge wear to the wrappers, but on the whole in near fine condition. Laid into two pictorial and gilt portfolios (moderately worn). A scarce, apparently complete run, in the original pictorial wrappers, of this Swedish periodical of Buffalo Bill western adventure stories. Begun in 1906, the year of Buffalo Bill's final tour of Europe, the series stretched into seventy-two issues in forty-one parts. The attractive illustrations are by David Ljungdahl and C.O. Bartels, and show Buffalo Bill in a variety of adventures and heroic acts. The rear wrapper of some issues contains an advertisement for the entire Buffalo Bill series, while others promote a similar periodical called "Texas Jack," and yet others a series that translates to "With Swedish Adventurers in the Dollar County," all of which give valuable information on how these periodicals were marketed in Sweden. Most of the OCLC listings are for individual issues at the National Library of Sweden, though there are also records for an issue at Princeton, and another at Northern Illinois University. Excellent evidence of the popularity throughout Europe of Buffalo Bill and the mythic American West.

Autograph correspondence signed. Monkey House Trial.

27 November - 13 Dicember 1906. - 4 autograph letters signed, in italian. Addressed to the friend Giovanni Mascia. 10 pages in 8vo cm. 23 x 15 each (inches 9 x 6), headed Hotel Savoy New York. 1 stamped and addressed envelope. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

THE WOODLANDERS (Presentation Copy Inscribed By the Author to His Second Wife, Florence Hardy)

Osgood, McIlvaine, London - Hardy, Thomas. THE WOODLANDERS. London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1906. Later Edition. This is the PRESENTATION COPY given by the author to his future second wife, Florence Emily Dugdale, during the time they first began their secret courtship, four years before the death of the first Mrs. Hardy. At the time of its presentation, it was the most current version of the novel and it is inscribed: "To/ Miss F. E. Dugdale/With the Author's Kind Regards/Christmas 1908." The copy has been well-read by the second Mrs. Hardy as one might expect and shows some wear but little tear, still in very nice original condition without major flaw. Despite Hardy's formality of inscription, he was already quite drawn to Miss Dugdale by this time and a more intimate presentation copy of this title would be hard to find. Florence Hardy's personal copy of THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE (also a later edition with her bookplate, but NOT inscribed by Thomas Hardy) made $12,095.00 at Sotheby's London in 2001. Spectacular association. Housed in a new quarter-morocco slipcase. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Dermato-Histologischer Atlas in 53 Abbildungen auf 24 Tafeln.

. Leipzig, J.A.Barth, 1906, Gr.8°, VIII, 48 pp. Tafelerklärungen, 24 farblith. Taf., orig. Halbleinwandband..
