        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Here is a good set. The red cloth bindings remain square and tight, with minor wear to extremities. Spine presentation is better than usual, with some of the typical sunning, but still retaining bright gilt and respectable red color, with only some minor stains to the lower spines and a little wrinkling to the spine ends. Of note, spine appearance and overall binding condition is uniform, indicating that this is an original, mated pair. The contents remain quite bright with spotting light for the edition, substantially confined to the first and final leaves and untrimmed page edges. The same previous owner's decorative bookplate is affixed both front free endpapers and a different owner name (the same in both volumes) written in pencil on the second blank endsheet of Volume I and the first free endpaper of Volume II. The Volume I pastedown bears the decorative bookplate of the British colonial civil servant Sir Robert Benson Ewbank (1883-1967). The Volume I first free endpaper facing Sir Ewbank's bookplate features a five line inked gift inscription to him thus: "To Sir Robert Ewbank. | Who has always been such a | very kind friend to my Stepmother Josephine | Eleanor Calthrop | November 27.1960."         Novels & Letters of Jane Austen [Twelve Volume Set] Sense & Sensibility, Emma, Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Persuasion Etc

Frank S. Holby, New York 1906 - Octavo, Gilt lettered and decorated leather spines. Marbled paper covered boards. Deckled outside edges. Top edges gilt. Some minor edge scuffs and three volumes have some light chipping to spine ends. Otherwise a fabulous set of this wonderful author's complete writings, including letters. This is the Chawton Edition and is numbered 491of 1250 in a limited edition. Over 4000 pages. Very few sets were bound in leather like this set. Most were cloth with paper spine labels. Color frontispiece in each volume by Charles Edmund Brock and Henry Matthew Brock. Edited by R. Brimley Johnson with an introduction by Professor William Lyon Phelps, Ph. D. Includes Austen's novels Sense and Sensibility;Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey; and Persuasion as well as her short works and letters. Jane Austen December 16,1775 - July 18, 1817 was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Kokoro, Lotos, KyuShu, (German Language) Set of Three Limited Editions in Vellum

Frankfort: Anstalt, Rutten & Loening., 1906-1908. Classic works on the spirituality, art, philosophy, and culture of Japan. First and limited German editions in vellum with decorations and woodcuts by Emil Orlik. Hearn's work on early Japan is unique and unrivaled in it's essential perceptions. He became a naturalized Japanese citizen under the name Koizumi Yakumo. In March of 1900, Austrian artist Emil Orlik undertook his first voyage to the Far East in order to learn at its source how to master the techniques which were of such fascination to him. He absorbed much knowledge from the artists, woodblock-carvers and printers with whom he worked. Orlik met the author Lafcadio Hearn while in Japan and later translated Hearn's books into German and illustrated them. These editions are the result of their friendship and mutual fascination with Japan and its culture. . With the exception of the last chapter, all of the Kokoro chapters are translated from Hearn's "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan". Kyusu is a complete translation of "Kokoro". Lotos is a translation of 'Out of the East'. Printed on Japanese vellum with illustrations and decorations throughout. Surface soil to vellum covers. Small 1907 pon to 2 volumes. Sound bindings and text blocks

Drainage Problems of the East: Being A Revised and Enlarged Edition of "Oriental Drainage"

Bombay.: "Times of India".. 1906.. 2 volumes. Volume I: Black and white illustrations, xxxi + 378pp + [22]pp advertisments bound in at rear, glossary, index. Volume II: 77 folding maps, plans and diagrams including Plan of the Town of Singapore for the Disposal of Nightsoil; Drainage System of Penang; Map of Bombay as it Existed in 1672; Geological Map of the Island of Bombay and large Main Drainage of the City of the Calcutta. A handsome set in full maroon leather gilt, raised bands on spine. This book is a greatly expanded edition of the author's earlier work "Oriental Drainage" which C. Carkeet James wrote after realising that although there were many books on sewage disposal and drainage they all were written with Western Countries in mind and none taking into account the conditions in Asia. Following the success of "Oriental Drainage" C. Carkeet James began to prepare a second edition however while researching for this edition he found that there had been so many improvements and new methods that "nothing short of a new book would meet the requirements of the subject..." In the preface of "Drainage Problems of the East" he explains that "Apart from the bringing up to date and expansion of the Chapters taken from the original work, new Chapters have been added, dealing with such highly instructive drainage-systems as those of Karachi, Calcutta, Rangoon, Singapore, Penang, Shanghai and Alexandria, as well as with sanitary conditions in other Eastern countries and with some of the more important enterprises that have been undertaken in recent years in India and the Far East." .

        WHITE FANG

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906. First edition. Fine. Title page a cancel, as usual. A Fine copy of the book. Bright spine gilt, white cover lettering and illustration complete, sharp corners, and no internal ownership marking. Page block slightly separated between pgs. 6 and 7, otherwise the book appears unread and untouched. Jack London's classic novel of the adventures of a domesticated wolf-dog, sometimes viewed as metaphor for the way primitive man came to be civilized. The novel was originally published in serial in Outing magazine, and when it was released proved immensely popular. Indeed, White Fang would help enshrine London as an American household name. It has since been translated into over 89 languages and adapted into multiple films. "His vigorous, incisive style, unconventionality, and sympathetic understanding of nature and of her children in the rough, never combined to better advantage than in "White Fang." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine.
