The Encyclopaedia Japonica: A Dictionary of Commerce

Japanese Publisher, 1906. A massive Japanese commercial reference from the early 1900s. Approximately 2,000 pages. Text primarily in Japanese, other than the 18 - page bilingual (Japanese / English) index and an intriguing bilingual fold - out sample of various contemporary export documents. Two items laid inside front board include a double - sided bilingual glossary of commonly used trade terms and a wonderful 22" wide by 16" high colour map of the world with trade routes to / from Japan indicated in red. Most text on the map is Japanese with some place names in both English and Japanese. Please note that library name is stamped through the blank upper right corner of the map. Elaborately gilt - decorated backstrip with title in Japanese and English bears considerable wear but is still handsome and, dare we say, mysterious. Per a handwritten inscription inside back board, this copy was presented to representatives of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo on 24 October, 1908 by Mr. Shonojo Moriyama, Proprietor of the Dobun_____. Edges adorned with partially - faded marbling. Usual library markings. Above - average wear. Binding intact. A marvelously unique item. Former Library Copy

        White Fang (Inscribed first edition)

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906. First edition. Very Good +. Inscribed on the front end paper "Dear Kittie: Fondly and affectionately thine, Jack London | Glen Elen, Nov. 15, 1910." Title page a cancel, as usual. A very pleasing copy externally, with the white paint of the illustration almost completely intact and minimal wear at the spine ends. The inner hinges have been repaired, but there is evidence that the end papers belong to this copy. Otherwise in excellent condition internally, and complete with all eight colored plates. Jack London's classic novel of the adventures of a domesticated wolf-dog, sometimes viewed as metaphor for the way primitive man came to be civilized. The novel was originally published in serial in Outing magazine, and when it was released proved immensely popular. Indeed, White Fang would help enshrine London as an American household name. It has since been translated into over 89 languages and adapted into multiple films. "His vigorous, incisive style, unconventionality, and sympathetic understanding of nature and of her children in the rough, never combined to better advantage than in "White Fang." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Very Good +.

The writings of Henry David Thoreau

Boston: "Houghton, Mifflin & Co.", 1906. "Manuscript Edition, limited to 600 sets (this is no. 387), signed by the publishers, containing a leaf of Thoreau's manuscript, written in ink on both sides; the entire text concerns apples, portions of which appeared in his essay, "Wild Apples." 20 volumes, 8vo, portraits and numerous plates throughout after photographs by Herbert Gleason. In original green buckram, paper labels on spines; lacking the rare printed dust-jackets, with the buckram cracked along 2 or 3 joints, some chipping at the tops of 5 or 6 spines, 1 label slightly abraded, a few leaves in volume 11 carelessly opened, spines uniformly sunned, occasional light pencil annotation in the Journals; but on the whole, the set looks pretty presentable as it sits on the shelf, and the leaf of manuscript is generally fine. Allen, p. 52; BAL 20145; Borst B3. BAL notes that vols. I-V are reprints, but vols. VI-XX contain material not published before, and represent the first complete edition of the Journals."

A wine collector's extensive archive, the meticulous records of Douglas H. Thomas (1847-1919; President of Merchants' National Bank, Baltimore, Maryland), including wine catalogues and invoices, Thomas's correspondence with wine importers, restaurant menus, and other material gathered by Thomas, 1897-1906

Baltimore and other places, 1906. A prominent member of Baltimore society in the late 19th and early 20th century, and a connoisseur of fine wines, Thomas traveled widely, retaining menus from restaurants he visited in London, Paris, Nice, Lucerne, Moscow, etc.; this collection includes more than one hundred fifty items, including thirty-five wine catalogues and lists issued by importers, major vintners, private clubs and hotels, sixteen hotel and restaurant wine lists, three auction and sale lists, eight menus, several manuscript inventories of Thomas's wine collection, and more than eighty-five pieces of correspondence and invoices from Taylor's importers and agents. Four of the menus are from the Café de Paris, with color cover illustrations by the artist Jane Atche; a fifth menu is illustrated by Gregoire Calvet. Thomas's correspondents included Bailey & Co., Hedges & Butler, and Robinson & Payne in London; Sazerac de Forge & Fils, Moet & Chandon, F. Woltner, Brossault & Co., Dignimont Frères, and P. Louis in Paris; and Ad. Chr. Engelbrecht in Mainz. Thomas inherited both his interest in wine and a portion of his large collection from his father John Hanson Thomas, a Baltimore physician, writing in a 1906 letter that "I have quite a large cellar of champagnes, clarets, and Rhine wines, all of which are vintage wines of my own importation. My father was a great connoisseur of Madeira and at his death he bequeathed me a large amount of vintages of 1800 to 1845. This stock I have increased somewhat by purchases when I had the opportunity of procuring the very highest grades of wine, which is very rare, but I have now a stock of perhaps seven to eight hundred bottles which is probably one of the largest stocks of old Madeira in the country." Taylor considered Madeira to be "a gentleman's wine and the king of wines, and the love of it is an inherited one, hence I desire to transmit the means of its enjoyment to my children." Among his purchases of Madeira were a dozen bottles from Thomas K. Carey, originally imported in 1840 by a Charleston, South Carolina, resident and carefully hidden by the owner, sealed under the pavement in a cellar during the Civil War; one of the finest wines in his collection was one he inherited, called the Marshall wine '1805,' which once belonged to his father's great uncle Chief Justice John Marshall. A four-page inventory of the collection is available upon request. A very good lot in all respects.

The Land of Oz / A Sequel to The Wizard of Oz

The Reilly & Britton Co., Chicago 1906 - This copy of the sequel to "The Wizard of Oz" is "good" but no better. It's intact and complete. Both sets of endpapers (featuring inset photographic representations of the dedicatees, popular Vaudevillians David C. Montgomery and Fred A. Stone as the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow) are intact, and all 16 color plates (including frontispiece) remain attached where they're supposed to be. (Our scan shows the REAR endpapers, where there's been a hinge repair. Front endpapers are a mirror image of these.) States "Published, July, 1904," and title page also states 1904, though probably actually 1906, as (while title page still reads "The Marvelous Land of Oz,") title to front board and spine has been shortened to "The Land of Oz." This would appear to be the third state of the first edition, as per Hanff & Greene. Bound in red cloth stamped in black, green, and silver, with Pumpkinhead stamped in black to rear board. Thickness of book with its boards is one inch, or at most 1-and-1/16th (3 cm.) 1907 Christmas gift inscription in pencil to recto of frontispiece. (We have ARTIFICALLY DARKENED our scan of this particular page to render inscription legible -- other scans depict interior page colors more accurately.) No Dorothy or Toto, this time, but the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman retain major roles, and we also get Glinda, Ozma, the Highly Magnified Woggle-Bug, Jack Pumpkinhead, The Animated Saw-Horse and the Gump. Flaws: The sheet BEFORE the final color plate ("The Scarecow As Royal Treasurer") comprising text pp. 283-284, is split near spine for most of its height, with only the top quarter still connected. Two small pieces of "Magic" tape have been placed along this split near gutter -- impinging no text -- to hold sheet in place until a more sophisticated repair can be attempted. (This no-nitrate tape can be safely removed from paper with n-Heptane, sold commercially as Bestine.) Also, bottom half of the rear hinge of this book has been re-glued, resulting in some stiffness to exterior of the spine, there. Furthermore, head and heel of red cloth spine-covering are frayed, and all four board outer corners are poking through the red cloth to the extent of a quarter-inch. So: not a pristine copy, though internal pages are blessedly clean & free of scribblings -- aside from the aforementioned 1907 father-to-son Christmas gift inscription to first blank. Totals 287 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Très amicalement R.D." to the verso of the second leaf. The complete score of this work for harp in orchestral reduction, with the harp part notated in blue ink and the orchestral part in red. With numerous annotations, corrections, and performance markings in pencil in another hand, almost exclusively to the harp part.Slightly worn and soiled; short tears and remnants of sewing thread to inner margins. Variations plaisantes was first performed in Paris on January 24, 1909, with the renowned harpist Marcel Grandjany (1891-1975) at the harp. A. Durand published the work in both full score and piano reduction in the same year.Roger-Ducasse "studied composition with Fauré, counterpoint with Gédalge, harmony with Pessard and piano with Charles-Auguste de Bériot. He was a founding member of the Société Musicale Indépendante (1909) along with Ravel, Vuillermoz and Koechlin. A friend of Debussy's, he gave an early of performance En blanc et noir with him in December 1916, and was with Chouchou (Debussy's daughter) when Debussy died." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online.Music critic Georges Jean Aubry (1882-1949), the second dedicatee, "belonged to a circle of avant-garde musicians and littérateurs and was a frequent contributer to periodicals. Encouraged by his 20-year friendship with Debussy, he wrote enthusiastically in support of contemporary French composers, noting similarities between their music and that of the 18th century (Couperin, Rameau)." Grove Music Online. This attractive and carefully executed manuscript, with its numerous annotations and corrections, offers harpists and scholars alike an intriguing glimpse of the genesis of the piece. Many of the corrections were incorporated into the Durand edition; some differences between this manuscript and the published version, however, remain.
