THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF LAFCADIO HEARN. By Elizabeth Bisland

Boston 1906, Houghton. Green cloth, index, appendix, 15 b.w.. illustrations, paper labels.FIRST LIMITED EDITION 200 COPIES. BOUND ENTIRELY UNCUT, WITH HEARN MSS. LEAF TIPPED IN. "Gift. from F. Coolidge HMCo. Dec 1/06 [to its chief binder]. RARE. THE FIRST & LIMITED EDITION OF 200 COPIES WITH MANUSCRIPT This work was issued in two basic editions: First Limited Edition of 200 Copies with Manuscript, and the First Trade edition, both in 2 volume sets. The FIRST LIMITED EDITION OF 200 COPIES contains a sheet of Hearn's actual holographic and penned manuscript, properly tipped in volume one. There are only two Hearn leaf book titles by Hearn: this example, and the other title is the complete Writings of Lafcadio Hearn in 16 volumes. The trade edition of this title looks quite similar to the Limited Edition, in that both are bound in green cloth with top gilt, but the Limited Edition has a manuscript leaf and paper lables on the spine. This has always been one of Hearn's rarest and most desirable titles for collectors & libraries alike. This is essentially a bio- graphy by his very close friend and fellow writer. Hearn has referred to Ms. Bisland as his "...literary brother" see the quote in volume 1, p.389. Please see our other listings for a manuscript letter from Hearn to Bisland whom he correspon- ded with often. Because Bisland carried on an extensive cor- respondence with Hearn, her ability to write a true & proper biography was a foregone conclusion. This set is illustrated with 16 photos and gravures, with frontispieces of Hearn. By and large the best and most reliable of all Hearn biogra- phies due to Bisland's primary knowledge of Hearn, something most other biographers can not say. For references see BAL 7944. Perkins: p.54-55 for comprehensive bibliographic deta- ils. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE MANUSCRIPT LEAF SET ! Color scans can be sent by email.         1906 THE HISTORY OF JAPAN TOGETHER WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE KINGDOM OF SIAM 16

Glasgow 1906, MacLehose. Red decorated cloth, very good copy. 3 vol., 336+396+385p., 162 maps, illustrations, many folding. small margin stain last few page edges, text clean, solid copy. untrimmed, reprint of London 1727, 15 x 22 cm., tops gilt.. EARLY ACCOUNT OF 18TH CENTURY JAPAN & SIAM BY A DOCTOR A reduced size, but exact and complete reprint of the First edition, published 1727 by J.G. Scheuchzer. . The 2nd. edition in 1778 was improved containing a second index, & a 75-page appendix on the Natural History of the Japanese tea, with accurate description of that plant, its culture, growth, preparation and uses. Also of the paper manufacture of the Japanese. Of the Cure of the Cholick [sic] by the acupuncture, or needle-pricking as it is used by the Japanese. An account of Moxa, an excellent caustic of the Chinese and Japanese, showing how & where to insert the needles & where to burn. In all, the original had 45 finely engraved copper plates and maps, with early illustrations on Japanese tea plants, herb logy & acupuncture adorn this work. * SUBTITLE: Giving an Account of the Ancient and Present State of government of that Empire, of its Temples, Palaces...of the chronology & Succession of the Emperors...Together with a Description of the Kingdom of Siam...Kaempfer [1651-1716] was a German doctor with a passion for traveling. He went to Nagasaki in 1690-91. His work covers Japanese history & a very reliable & lucid description of the political, social & physical state of the country in the 17th century. * For upwards of 100 years this work remained the chief source of reliable and primary information for the rest of the world. Kaempfer was essentially stationed in Nagasaki harbor on the prison-like island of Dejima, the entrance of which was controlled by the Japanese. There he performed his medical duties as Dutch East India Company physician. Once a year, a representative of the Company was allowed to go to Edo under very strict military guard, to be observed by the Shogun. The entourage went by way of Nagasaki to Kokura, Osaka, Miaco [Kyoto], Fammamatz [Hamamatsu], to Edo, basically up the Tokaido highway. Kaempfer was sent to the Shogun's palace in Edo he was ordered to dance, sing & eat while being scrutinized by the Shogun who shielded himself behind a Sudare or bamboo curtain. The Shogun secretly watched the Oranda-jin [a Dutchman]. Kaempfer was a very open & free-thinking educated man, who was also an intellectual. The Shogun took to him & granted the favor of free travel throughout Japan, unheard of during this period of Japan's & fear of Westerners and isolation to the rest of the world. The Dutch were allowed just so many vessels to visit annually & trade with their "window to the world" at Dejima. Nagasaki became a gathering place for curious Japanese, as well as would-be Ran-gaku-sha [Japanese Scholars of Dutch Learning] who studied science, medicine, astronomy, geography, cartography and the Western art of copper plate printing. From this very tiny island "window" Japan's curious intellectuals made a school & began to teach Western style knowledge to an elite Japanese intelligentsia. * WHO WAS DR. ENGELBERT KAEMPFER: Kaempfer was one of the scant few who gave favor to the rise of such Japanese and taught them what he could. This most famous primary resource has been celebrated since its publication as THE single most important book on Japan in the 18th century. Over the past two centuries & a half, this work has maintained its position as one of the three most important books on Japan done in English in the West. Highly collectable and coveted by connoisseurs, historians & librarians renders this a magnificent primary resource with fabulous etchings. The addition of the appendices in 1728 on the Tea Camellia is the first appearance of this in English. Also the first discussion of acupuncture & the use of Moxa [Mogusa] as a medical remedy. The West is still learning about effectiveness of these two medical treatments to this day. Kaempfer's influence on the Japanese is difficult to assess, except that some of Japan's most intellectual scientists, physicians, reformers and scholars got their Rangaku from Deshima after Kaempfer arrived. Shiba Kokan the "Da Vinci of Japan", Matsukawa Hanzan and a host of others led Japan through the halls of innovation for the next two hundred and fifty years. Even today, medicine is still considered as "Rangaku" in Japan. The roots of Japan becoming a modern, well educated nation emanates from its first introduction of European learning via Deshima. This book documents the beginning of that era. In just two years' stay in Japan, Dr. Kaempfer began Japan's long voyage of equality with the West. RARE in either edition. Kaempfer [1740-1812] was the director of the Deshima factory in 1779-1780 and 1781-1784 in Nagasaki. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: . E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL p.332 * M.         [Photo Album]: Farm Life and Farm Equipment in Upstate New York

[Lancaster, New York. 1906-1922]. Oblong folio. Measuring 12.25" x 10.25". [110]pp. Very good contemporary limp textured black leather photo album with some chipping and edgewear, and lacking the spine, still a sound album with sharp photos in excellent condition. 227 original gelatin silver photographs, ranging between 3" x 5" and 5" x 7", most are glued down, a few tipped-in with black corners, and many with captions beneath in white ink.An outstanding photo album filled with over 200 original silver gelatin photos exhibiting the Beck family farm, as well as some interesting images of the Moline farm engines and equipment used and sold by Irvin Beck for George Beck & Sons, as well as some later images when he was a salesman for United States Tires in upstate New York, all during the opening two decades of the 20th Century. This album provides an insightful visual record of the compiler's career as both a farmer and a farm equipment salesman, with many particularly pleasing images of the Beck family farm. Beck began working at a young age on the family farms of his father George Beck, and his maternal grandparents, the Bruncks in Lancaster, New York. The album opens with an image of Moline Corn Binders awaiting delivery outside of the George Beck & Sons sales building, and then shows numerous photo images of Moline 7 horsepower and 9 horsepower gasoline engines employed to load oat bales, splitting and dragging logs, and providing power on the various farms, and even providing power to Herman Brunck's sawmill.Beck had an obvious fascination for machinery, as evidenced by the number of photos showing various Ford Model T 4-doors and coupes, and a few depicting the trailer for delivering farm equipment such as plows, gasoline engines, and corn binders. Other images are present of the Moline Model C Tractor, a Moline Model D tractor, a 1916 contest where the Moline Flying Dutchman plow defeated the Oliver plow, a wrecked Mack Truck; a woman (possibly his wife) sitting on a 1915 Harley Davidson V-Twin motorcycle with coil springs in front forks and other add-ons; and even images of delivering a corn binder to the Syracuse, New York Fair in September, 1920.The album also contains photos of drilling for gas on Handy Farm in 1916 with the drilling derrick and equipment, replacing a windmill in 1921, the Moline Universal Tractor and New Idea Spreader at the Batavia Fair, Batavia, New York in 1920, and more. The family farm and the equipment sales appear to have generated a good standard of living as evidenced by the quality of the automobiles, equipment, farm buildings, and the vacations the family afforded at Niagara Falls, Alden, Olcott Beach, Conesus Lake, N.Y., and the Ebenezer Colony Dams in West Seneca, N.Y. After World War I, Beck began selling automobile supplies, accessories, and tires for the United States Tires Company as well. At the time, the company focused on selling pneumatic rubber tires for trucks, and heavy equipment. Of particular interest are a wonderful series of 10 photos he has included exhibiting United States Tires Company advertising billboards across New York State, including Niagara Falls, Geneva, Hopewell, Lima, Pembroke, Seneca Falls, and Ithaca. He would eventually become an automobile dealer and salesman during the 1930s.Pleasing and well composed images giving a good overview of a farmer and salesman in New York State. .

ALS Signed to Cecil Harmsworth (1869-1948). With envelope addressed in Churchill's hand.

Single sheet of Colonial Office notepaper, written whilst a member of the Liberal cabinet, beginning "Dear Mr. Harmsworth, I have already gone into Mr Podwin's case at the request of Mr George Wyndham", and explaining that he will gladly help him find a post. Dated 'March 24th', sadly without the year but research narrows this to 1906-1908; from December 1905-April 1908 Churchill served as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, dealing mainly with South Africa after the Boer War, in particular settling the Transvaal Constitution which was accepted by Parliament in 1907. This headed notepaper clearly refers to this period; although Churchill returned as Colonial Secretary from 1921-2, his friend George Wyndham had died in 1913 and would therefore not have been a key subject in this letter. Conservative MP George Wyndham (1863-1913), a beneficiary of Cecil Rhodes, was also a firm ally of the young Winston Churchill. Both had served as British Army officers in the Sudan and both were politically involved with South Africa. Furthermore Wyndham was Chief Secretary for Ireland (1900-1905); Churchill played a prominent role in Irish policy at this time and was later a key figure in the founding of the Irish Free State (Republic of Ireland). The Liberal MP Cecil Harmsworth (1869-1948) was elected to the Commons in February 1906 and later served as Deputy Foreign Secretary. He was also chairman of Associated Newspapers and both his son and grandson (as Viscounts Rothermere) were powerful Fleet Street press magnates. This letter therefore touches on three key areas which defined the young Churchill's early parliamentary career; South Africa, The Anglo-Irish treaty and 'crossing the floor' party politics.

Tarpon Fishing in Mexico and Florida

Harrison and Sons, London 1906 - Light blue cloth with spine and cover rules & titles in white, paste-on b/w photo blocked in white lower front panel; 8vo; 73 + 2pp; illustrated with b/w photo frontispiece, decorative chapter initials plus 26 plates with either single or double images per page, all printed in blue ink; large fold-out color map at rear. The rear pastedown contains 2 pockets that house 16 loose stereopticon view cards of tarpon fishing scenes. No date listed, but assumed to have been published in 1906. One of the earliest works devoted solely to tarpon fishing. In a "Partial Tarpon Bibliography", Ken Callahan states: "The author began his tarpon fishing in Mexico in 1904 and he gives long accounts of his fishing experiences in Mexico and Florida. Churchill recommends Vom Hofe reels.there is at present no English made tarpon reels I can recommend. Mentions there is a taxidermist near Useppa Inn who will stuff a tarpon at a price of 5 dollars per foot." This copy in very good condition with light cover soiling and minimal wear to corners. Two bookplates to front preliminaries with some offsetting as well. Internally quite clean with all plates very bright. The map has some creasing and a small tear at one of the folds. All view cards present and in VG condition. A nice copy of a scarce and desirable title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF LAFCADIO HEARN. By Elizabeth Bisland

Boston 1906, Houghton. Green cloth, index, appendix, 15 b.w.. illustrations, paper labels, torn dust jackets but in the. original publisher's soiled box, books fine. FIRST LIMITED. EDITION 200 COPIES, WITH HEARN MANUSCRIPT, ENTIRELY UNCUT.. The narrator is ?'a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor?', an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David becomes a substitute in his affections. He explains to David that ?'all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens; and that the reason there are bars on nursery windows and a tall fender by the fire is because very little people sometimes forget that they no longer have wings, and try to fly away through the window or up the chimney.?' The central chapters of the book tell the story of one such child, Peter Pan, who ?'escaped from being a human when he was seven days old…and flew back to the Kensington Gardens?'…The Peter Pan chapters of The Little White Bird were re-issued in 1906 as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with colour plates by Arthur Rackham; this was the book which first made Rackham?'s work famous. It should not be confused with Peter and Wendy (1911), Barrie?'s novelization of the play Peter Pan?" (The Oxford Companion to Children?'s Literature).Latimore and Haskell, p. 27. Riall, p. 74.

Das Podium. Künstlergesten aus dem Concertsaal. Lithographiert von Eugen Spiro

Berlin, 1906. Some wear and staining of the folding card case; internally in very good order with all portraits well preserved.. Portfolio of 37 lithographic portraits measuring 320 x 290 mm., each in folding protective mount, original printed folding card case with the titling leaf. Beautiful collection of lithographic portraits of famous European singers and musicians of the turn of the century, with each plate individually signed by the artist. Eugen Spiro was born in Breslau in 1874 and worked as a landscape and portrait artist in Germany and later the United States. His portraits of prominent creative and scientific personalities won him lasting acclaim in both continents. After a spell in Paris Spiro returned to Germany in 1914 and rose to prominence amongst the fashionable Berlin art scene; he served as chairman of the Berlin Secession and was appointed Professor of the Berlin Academy of Arts. On account of his Jewish ancestry, Spiro was prohibited from working by the ascendant Third Reich from 1933 onwards. He finally emigrated to the United States with his family in 1941 and although 67 years of age upon arrival, Spiro continued to work and exhibit up until decease in 1972 at the age of 98.The portfolio was originally issued with 34 plates in an edition of 55 copies; this copy is an example of the later expanded edition with an additional 3 plates (bringing the total to 37) and limited to 30 numbered copies.
