        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a two-volume British first edition set with interesting provenance. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Here is a very good set with interesting provenance. This copy comes to us from the collection of Oscar-winning actor and director Lord Richard Samuel Attenborough (1923-2014). Moreover, the front pastedowns of both volumes bear the armorial bookplates of Henry Arthur Lascelles. Lt. Col. Henry Arthur Lascelles (1842-1913) fought in the Indian Mutiny and in the Ashanti Campaign. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Rifle Brigade. He was invested as a Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) The red cloth bindings remain quite respectably bright, with lightly bumped corners, and only modestly faded spines that retain good color and bright gilt. The only noteworthy blemish is a roughly 1.75 x .75 inch spot of moisture exposure and consequent discoloration at the upper rear cover of Volume I at the hinge. The contents are bright with light intermittent spotting throughout. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods/ICS A8(a), Langworth p.69.

        Nature of Capital and Income

1906 - FISHER, Irving. The Nature of Capital and Income. New York and London: Macmillan, 1927. Thick octavo, original green cloth. $3800.Scarce 1927 edition of this pioneering work on the growth of wealth, by “the United States’ greatest scientific economist” (Niehans, 279), signed by Irving Fisher on the title page.Considered "the father of monetary economics," Irving Fisher, during a mountain-climb in the Alps, encountered a cascade of water into a pool, which clicked with him as a metaphor for the growth of wealthâ€"a distinction he used in this work to clarify several prevailing economic notions regarding capital and income. "He defined capital as a stock of wealth at one point in time, analogous to a stock of water in a pool… Out of current income would come a [cascade] of savings which adds to our stock of wealth" (Pressman, 92-93). With his Nature of Capital and Income, "Fisher became the first economist to develop a theory of capital (including human capital) on an actuarial and accounting basis… He demonstrated convincingly that in economics only the future counts, and that past costs have no direct relevance to value. In point of fact, his research resulted in rigorous definition of the bases on which it is possible to ground a valid theory of interest" (IESS). Preceded by the 1906 first edition and the 1923 edition. Text very fresh, front inner paper hinge expertly reinforced, only lightest edge-wear to cloth, spine a bit toned. A near-fine copy, scarce signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

ARGONAUT STORIES . Selected from the Argonaut, Jerome Hart, Editor.

San Francisco: The Argonaut Publishing Co., 1906 - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vi [vii-viii] [1-2] 3-320, original gray pictorial wrappers printed in red and black. First edition. An anthology of twenty- two stories, including many sensational, criminous and weird tales, that first appeared in THE ARGONAUT, a San Francisco periodical that frequently published fantastic fiction. Contributors include Jack London (first book appearance of "Moon-Face"), Frank Norris (first book appearance of "A Caged Lion"), William C. Morrow ("The Rajah's Nemesis"), C. W. Doyle ("The Seats of Judgment"), Stewart Edward White ("A Double Shot"), Robert Duncan Milne ("Ten Thousand Years in Ice"), and others. All copies known to us, save this copy, bear the imprint "San Francisco: Payot, Upham & Company, agents for Pacific Coast, 1906." We would speculate that this issue with Argonaut's own imprint is the earliest (if, indeed, there is any priority). The anthology is uncommon. According to Merle Johnson (1942), "most of edition destroyed by San Francisco earthquake and fire." Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1515h (Milne). BAL 11893 (London); BAL 15041 (Norris). Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 A-298. Signature of W. Brooks and rubber-stamped date "Apr 9 1906" on title page; his signature and rubber-stamped date "Apr 11 1906" on rear cover. Light wear to edges of cover with slight loss at spine ends and corner tips, several light creases to cover, still a very good copy of a very fragile book.
