In the Days of the Comet

1906 - WELLS, H.G. In the Days of the Comet. London: MacMillan, 1906. Octavo, original green cloth gilt. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $17,500.First edition, second issue (as always), first state, presentation copy humorously inscribed by H.G. Wells to Richard Gregory, his close friend and scientific advisor, "To dear old Griggalorums. From H.G."Wells was a devoted member of the Fabian society and a utopian socialist; his novels often explore potential utopias and dystopias of the future, and how they may be brought about. In the present work, "the wondrous change in human personality is brought about by the gases in a comet's tail, through which the Earth is fortunate enough to pass," a concept that has been adopted by numerous utopian societies in the years since this novel's pubication (Clute & Nicholls, 1314). Second issue, as usual (only one copy of the first issue is known: the British Library copy), first state, with integral title page. Without scarce original dust jacket. Currey, 419. Hammond B10. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his "dearest friend." The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous "scientific romances." After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science"""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work," he once declared""and "an optimist about man's future" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).Interior fine, only very minor wear to cloth extremities, gilt bright. A nearly fine copy with a great association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Il Tatuaggio

Napoli: Gennaro M. Priore, 1906. 8vo, 281 [2] pp, printed wraps. Complete with all 15 plates as called for, two of which are roughly hand-colored, each of which reproduces drawings of tattoos, and additional illustrations in the text. Inscribed by the author at first blank. Text in Italian. First edition of this important early study of tattoos and tattooing, written by a doctor and anthropologist who wrote often on criminology and was a follower of Lombroso. The 15 plates, all of which are present here, are beautifully drawn from life and are a rare and evocative record. The final plate is dedicated to tattoos of prostitutes and prints some of the most beautiful and unusual tattoos we've seen recorded from this period. OCLC locates only two holdings at the time of cataloguing. Wraps foxed, worn, and tidemarked along the spine. Professional paper repair to rear wrap and to a tear at final leaf. Good only, but complete and clean within. A fragile publication, and rare in any condition, especially inscribed.

Commission D'Inspection Des Lazarets Sur Le Lazaret D'Abou-Saad, Wasta

Constantinople, 1906. 1st Edition. Blue cloth with gilt titles. Cloth darkened at the edges, wear to spine ends, small area of damp staining to the bottom head of spine. Contents fine. Folding maps, black and white ills ( 23 ). French text. 50 pages plus indices. Very scarce.THE lazaret of the port of Jeddah is commonly known as the Abu-Saad lazaret, that being the name of the principal of the three islands upon which it is built. The others are named Wasta and Abu-Ali. The so-called "port" of Jeddah is merely an anchorage, or rather two anchorages, an "inner" " and an " outer port," among the shoals and coral reefs which characterise the whole of this coast. These reefs are very irregular but their long axes run more or less parallel with the coast. The" outer port " is about two and a quarter sea-miles from the shore and the "inner port" about one and a quarter miles in a straight line, but no boat, however shallow its draught, could reach the shore by following a straight line, and the only available channel takes an extremely zigzag course among the reefs. From the inner port to the island of Abu-Saad the distance is three and three-quarters sea-miles, from 'Abu-Saad to Wasta it is one and three-quarters miles, and from Wasta to Abu-Ali one and a quarter miles. The three islands lie to the south of the town and are roughly about two miles from the mainland. Ships in quarantine remain in one or other of the anchorages at Jeddah and their pilgrims are transferred to the lazaret in sambouks. The Abu-Saad lazaret was brought into existence in 1882 as a "succursale" " of the much larger institution at Camaran. It is intended for the use of ships carrying not more than 5 per cent. of their net tonnage coming either from the north or from the south. Ships with a larger number of pilgrims are liable to be sent to Camaran, but this usually happens only in the case of ships from the south. The latter are always subject to from five to ten days' quarantine, and they have in any case to pass close to Camaran on their voyage to the Hedjaz. But ships from the north are only liable to quarantine when Egypt or some of the countries on the Mediterranean are infected with plague or cholera. This happened in 1902-03, in 1905, and again in 1906-07 (the Haj just completed).

Text in Russian] Ispoved' [A Confession]

Posrednik, Moskva 1906 - Autobiographical essay on the author's spiritual evolution penned shortly after Tolstoy turned to Christian anarchism in his late-middle age. Inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation," the author describes emerging from a midlife crisis and a break from his literary past. Tolstoy was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, though by his teenage years was no longer practicing his childhood faith. Instead, the author writes early on in this essay, "I endeavoured to reach perfection in intellectual attainments" (as quoted from Thomas Sharper Knowlson's Leo Tolstoy: A Biographical and Critical Study (1904), p. 42). By late middle age the prospect of reaching literary and intellectual perfection no longer appealed to Tolstoy, who instead turned towards spiritual introspection. As he describes it, his melancholia immediately lessened when he said "God is life," though the author would not write of his Christian beliefs until the publication of What I Believe (also known as My Religion) in 1884. The influence of Tolstoy's religious works have been far-reaching, especially in their bid for nonviolent resistance, the most notable reader and practitioner arguably being Mahatma Gandhi, who wrote to Tolstoy after reading his Letter to a Hindu (1908).The present work would eventually serve as an introduction to a series of three works on religion which Tolstoy himself considered to be his best and most important work. First published in Russkaya Mysl, no. 5, in 1882, Ispoved was almost immediately banned by the Orthodox Church censorship. The text resurfaced again in Geneva in 1884, though it would not be until this 1906 edition that the piece appeared in Russia in book form, published by Posrednik, Tolstoy's non-profit publishing house. OCLC locates no copies in North America as of July, 2016. Slim octavo (20cm.); original green photo-illustrated wrappers; 85pp. Wrappers rather faded and toned along extremities, general wear from handling, small dampstain to upper cover, else About Very Good overall.         The writings

Houghton Mifflin and Co. [at the Riverside Press], Boston & New York 1906 - Manuscript Edition, limited to 600 sets signed by the publisher in vol. I, (this is set no. 339); 20 volumes, 8vo, 3 portraits of Thoreau, folding map, 101 photographic illustrations by Herbert W. Gleason, plus an additional 40 photographic plates which serve as frontispieces to this leather-bound issue (not in the cloth-bound copies), 20 of which are hand-colored; publisher's uncommon three-quarter red morocco, gilt-decorated spines, t.e.g.; fine, bright set with no fading. The red morocco binding is uncommon; sets in leather usually appear in green or brown morocco; the usual binding is green buckram with printed labels on the spines. The celebrated Manuscript Edition of Thoreau's writings, with the five principal works, other essays, miscellaneous pieces, poems, one volume of letters (edited by F. B. Sanborn), and 15 volumes of Thoreau's Journal (edited by Bradford Torrey). The manuscript leaf in this volume, approximately 175 words, is from Excursions, A Yankee in Canada, chapter four, "The Walls of Quebec" (pages 69-70, this edition), which Emerson edited for publication in 1863. This leaf contains about a half dozen interlinear editorial corrections in pencil which possibly may be in Emerson's hand. Thoreau writes: [The comparative wealth of the Church in this country was] "apparent; for in this village we did not see one good house besides. They were all humble cottages; and yet this appeared to me a more imposing structure than any church in Boston. But I am no judge of these things. Reentering Quebec through St. John's Gate, we took a caleche in Market Square for the Falls of the Chaudiere, about nine miles south-west of the city, for which we were to pay so much, beside forty sous for tolls. The driver, as usual, spoke French only. The number of these vehicles is very great for so small a town. They are like one of our chaises that has lost its top, only stouter and longer in the body, with a seat for the driver where the dasher is with us, and broad leather ears on each side to protect the riders from the wheel and keep children from falling out. They had" [an easy jaunting look.]. Allen p. 52; BAL 20145; Borst B3. BAL notes that vol. I-V are reprints, but vols. VI-XX contain new material by Thoreau, and represent the first complete edition of the Journals. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

WITH FLASHLIGHT AND RIFLE: A Record of Hunting Adventures and of Studies in Wild Life in Equatorial East Africa; Translated by Frederic Whyte

London Hutchinson and Co. 1906 - 2 volumes. First edition. Illustrated with 302 "untouched" black and white photographs by the author. 8vo, in the publisher’s original green buckram, the spines lettered in gilt, with circular black and white pictorial decoration of an elephant embossed on front covers, t.e.g. xxviii, 376; viii,377-782. A very pleasing, fresh and handsome set, bright and clean inside and out, especially well preserved. A LOVELY PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION FROM AN EARLY CONSERVATIONIST. Schillings was one of the first sportsmen of repute "to stand up before a snobbish public and proclaim that the best sport for a man of cultivated mind is the snapshotting with the camera, rather than the pumping of lead into elephants, rhinoceroses, antelopes, zebras, and many other harmless, beautiful, or rare beasts and birds" (from the introduction). The photographs are altogether an amazing collection, portraying a wide variety of creatures in their natural habitats, including even nighttime predators in mid-pounce. With Schillings’ highly readable prose, this is altogether an informative and thoughtful work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Miss Moppet

Hayes Lithographing Co. Buffalo New York - The Story of Miss Moppet was first produced by Warne as a panorama, fold out narrative in 1906, and later produced as a small format 'typical' Potter edition in 1916. I suspect this book is the true First hardback which was pirated by an American publisher prior to the UK hardback being released. But I do not know - if anyone can help please shout. It is super-scarce and has had the spine restored by a professional. Now in wonderful condition and superbly reproduced as you can see from the pictures. In twice the size of the standard Warne copies. Please ask any questions, Paypal accepted. One for the American archives, I think. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
