Ogawa, K.; Crizuka, M. [Japanese Views]
Ogawa Kazumasa, 1904. Ogawa Kazumasa. Hardcover. Tokyo, 1904. Oblong folio, unpaginated with a folding color map and 174 color plates. A nice production with photographic views of Japan. This copy needs to be rebacked, with the front hinge split and in need of a full repair (we did not try to fix it with tape of any kind). It also appears that this was used as a display copy at one point, as there are a few cut paper labels affixed as title pages and a few pencil notations on information pages accompanying photographs. Contents otherwise excellent. From the library of the American Captain Fred F. Rogers, USN, American Naval Attache. A fixable copy of a scarce book, with the illustrations well preserved, usable now as a reference. . Good. 1904. First Edition.

[Diaries] Mary Heald and Mary Heald Lane
[Great Barrington, Massachusetts]: [1858-1904]. Turn of the century manuscript diary, begun by Mary Heald at the birth of her daughter Mary in 1858, and continued in 1900 by the younger Mary Lane during the childhood of her own daughter Madeline. Comprised of 61 handwritten pages tracing the lives of three women in one family. Quarter cloth over marbled boards, with shelf-wear and rubbing to corners and edges of boards. Front hinge cracked but holding, causing looseness of the front signature; text block else is tight. Internally clean. Includes a tipped in note to Madeline from her father Dr. Orville Lane regarding her allowance, a tipped in poem by the young Madeline to her teacher Mrs. Price, and two letters from Madeline to her mother. "Our little girl was born in Chelsea, Mass...on Friday, Sept. 10, 1858, five minutes of eleven P.M....We called this little girl of ours by her great-grandmother's + her mother's name -- Mary Heald." So begins the diary of a mother to her daughter that would continue for the first year of the younger Mary's life. Mary Heald's near-daily entries provide rich detail about her experience as a mother, grieving the loss of her late infant son and celebrating the life of her newborn baby girl. Mary's writing shifts between the frank (for example, during the birth "mother was under the influence of Chloroform for two hours") and the tender ("mother must write how you have progressed in learning to do things...you spatted your little hands together and first learned to 'pat-a-cake'!"). Throughout, the elder Mary provides information on the respon … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good: minor rubbing. 30 plates: 6 colour woodblock plates and 24 collotype black and white plates. The plates are printed directly on the paper. The plates are quite consistent in size. Limited to 2000 copies. Alle edges gilt. Ito Jakuchu was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period when Japan had closed its doors to the outside world. Many of his paintings concern traditionally Japanese subjects, particularly chickens and other birds. Many of his otherwise traditional works display a great degree of experimentation with perspective, and with other very modern stylistic elements. A beautiful work!.

Coleridge, Samuel Taylor; Pissaro, Lucien and Esther (Artists)
Hammersmith: Eragny Press, 1904. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Pissaro, Lucien Esther. One of 226 copies on paper, unnumbered (plus 10 vellum copies), octavo size, [44] pp. A stunning fine press edition of some of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's (1772-1834) most beloved poems, with woodcut initials and borders designed in the William Morris style by Lucien and Esther Pissaro. Included is the author's original "Preface to Christabel" and "Of the Fragment of Kubla Khan". The poems were selected by Diana White, a close friend of the Pisarros and a confidant to Lucien after his father's (Camille) death. Per Genz (see citation below), the Pisarros could not decide whether or not to have a frontispiece in colour; they decided upon a frontispiece that would be chiaroscuro, which allowed them still to offer a frontis with colour but one which required fewer blocks, and hence could be offered at a less expensive price. As it was, by March of 1911 (seven years after publication), there remained 84 copies unsold - which seems ironic to us, as this is now a highly desirable publication from the Eragny Press.___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter grey paper and patterned paper covered boards (the Eragny Press "Violet" binding paper), fore- and bottom edges uncut, printed in black, red, and green, chiaroscuro wood-engraved frontispiece in green, large initial in orange and green, border and initials, Eragny printer's device printed at colophon; Brook type, Arches paper, octavo size (8.25" by 5.5"), pagination: [1-2] 3-41 [42 blank] [43-44 colophon] pp., limited edition, this one of 2 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Busoni's inscription follows: "and given to Mark Hambourg by Ferruccio Busoni." Busoni was an Italian composer and pianist, active primarily in Austria and Germany. "Much to his detriment as composer and aesthetician, he was lionized as a keyboard virtuoso. The focus of his interests as a performer lay in Bach, Mozart and Liszt, while he deplored Wagner. Rejecting atonality and advocating in its place a Janus-faced 'Junge Klassizität', he anticipated many later developments in the 20th century. Underwood & Underwood, [1904]., New York. First edition. 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" original printed, stiff brown wrappers, 68 pp., plus large folding map affixed to the rear inside cover. Plus thirty stereoscopic views on stiff mounts, plus a second (different) copy of view number twenty six. An important photographic tour of Yellowstone, containing thirty stereoscopes of the park (this set contains two versions of view twenty-six, see below). Like many natural wonders of the western United States, the beauties of Yellowstone had to be seen to be believed. As a result, it became a popular subject for photographic firms, from F. Jay Haynes to Underwood and Underwood, who specialized in stereoscopic views. The pamphlet text begins with a brief history and overview of Yellowstone, along with tips on how best to enjoy the park, before moving on to detailed descriptions of each of the views contained in the stereocards. The text bears a copyright date of 1904, while the map, which is keyed to the photographs, is copyrighted 1905. Each of the views is copyrighted 1904 on the mount (save for the Keppler Canyon view, copyrighted 1901), with an accompanying title. The verso of each mount contains a few paragraphs describing the scene, with the title from the recto further translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Cyrillic, demonstrating the wide geographic spread of those who would be interested in the images. MARX, Roger; ROCHE, Pierre
1904. ROCHE, Pierre. La Loie Fuller. Text by Roger Marx. 26 pp. With 17 colour relief engravings by Pierre Roche. Small folio, 265 x 200 mm, bound loose as issued in the original illustrated embossed wrappers and cardboard chemise. Preserved in an elaborate carved wooden slipcase. Evreux: Charles Hérissey, 1904. One of the rarest and most beautiful books of the Fin de Siecle. Marx's La Loie Fuller is also one of the most curious books from the Art Nouveau period. Using a reproductive process unseen in book production, the illustrator Pierre Roche captured the fluid movement of Loie Fuller's robes swishing through the air via his new process of 'coloured relief engravings.' This is number 48 of an edition of 130 copies. Loie Fuller (1862-1928), a burlesque dancer whose fame rested on her renowned "skirt dance," developed a unique form of choreography which emphasized the human body as transformed by artful manipulation of her silk dress, especially under coloured gas lighting. By 1892 Fuller was in Paris and performing with the Folies Bergeres. She was an immediate sensation with audiences and critics. Stephane Mallarme, the leading poet of the Symbolist movement, dubbed her "La Loie." One reviewer described the effect as "unique, ethereal, delicious... she emerges from darkness, her airy evolutions now tinted blue and purple and crimson, and again the audience... insists upon seeing her pretty piquant face before they can believe that the lovely apparition is really a woman." Pierre Roche (1855 -1922), French sculptor, made his first relief prints … [Click Below for Full Description]
