Areopagitica. A Speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc'd Printing, to the Parlament of England

London: Eragny Press, 1904. Fine press edition of John Milton's 1644 essay on the freedom of the press, one of 134 copies for sale out of a total print run of 160 copies. Subtitled "A Speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc'd Printing, to the Parlament of England," Areopagitica was Milton's forceful protest against Parliament's re-establishment of press censorship during the English Civil War. "Truth & understanding are not such wares as to be monopoliz'd and traded in by tickets and statutes, and standards. We must not think to make a staple commodity of all the knowledge in the Land, to mark & licence it like our broad cloath, and our wooll packs." The essay's most celebrated line is chiseled over the entrance of the New York Public Library's Main Reading Room: "a good Booke is the pretious life-blood of a master spirit, imbalm'd & treasur'd up on purpose to a life beyond life." Printer Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther, an English artist, founded the Eragny Press in 1894. Son of the painter Camille Pissarro, Lucien originally trained as an artist alongside Gauguin, Degas, and Seurat. He moved to England to pursue a career in book illustration, where he was invited into fine press circles by his mentor, Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press. Pissarro named his own press Eragny after the French village his family called home. The press was celebrated for its exceptional wood engravings, and its distinctive mix of French Impressionist and English Arts and Crafts styles. Unlike their contemporaries William Morris and Charles Ricketts, the Pissarros executed the presswork of their publications themselves, with Esther playing the primary role. The Pissarros printed Areopagitica for the first time in October 1903, but a fire at the bindery destroyed all but forty paper and ten vellum copies before any could be sold. This second issue, published in March 1904, consisted of 160 copies, with 134 available for sale. Genz EP18a. A striking fine press edition of Milton's classic defense of free speech, in fine condition, splendidly bound. Quarto: [1-3] 4-37 [38-40]. Contemporary full burgundy morocco elaborately tooled with repeating flower motif in blind, succeeding rows of ruling and circular decoration in gilt, armorial device tooled in gilt at center, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt-ruled dentelles with gilt leaf devices tooled to cornerpieces, six binder's blanks before and after text block. Title page printed in red and black, first page of text framed within elaborate wood-engraved decorative border with large floriated initial printed in red, smaller floriated initials throughout, additional notes printed in red, colophon printed in red and black, Eragny Press wood-engraved device to verso of colophon leaf. Hint of sunning to spine.

London in the time of the Tudors. A Reproduction, Reduced, of the Map by Ralph Agas, Circa 1560.

London: Adam and Charles Black, 1904. unbound. Panorama. Uncolored lithograph. Image measures 17.5 x 38.25". This exceptional map is a reduction of the famous and important Ralph Agas map of London, the earliest map of London known to be in existence. Shows a birds-eye view or panorama of London and includes parts of Whitehall, Southwark and the countryside of Middlesex in the distance. Depicts London bounded by the city walls with fields beyond. The London Bridge across the Thames is included. Beautifully illustrated, the map identifies several important buildings. The original map was created when the Tudor family ruled the Kingdom of England between 1485 and 1603. The population of London at the time was under 100000.

Although Ralph Agas was originally identified as the maps creator, there is no certainty as to who actually drew the map. First engraved on wood, the map is now commonly also known as the "woodcut" map. According to an inscription on the 1578 engraving of the Agas map in Oxford, the author claims that he had been hoping to undertake a survey of London for the last decade, but had been unable to do so. Although the statement can be considered unreliable evidence, the woodcut map was later dated to the early 1560s and further considered to be based on a map from the 1550s. Hence Agas's involvement in the creation of this map is now regarded doubtful (Agas was presumed to be born in the 1540s). The map however, is still often referred to as the "Agas" map.

This particular reduced copy accompanied "London in the Time of the Tudors" by Sir Walter Besant, published by Adam and Charles Black in 1904 and is a from a facsimile of the original map by Edward J. Francis in the possession of John C. Francis. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the folds. Left margin exhibits a small tear where the map was attached to the book.

Ralph Agas (circa 1540-1621) was an English surveyor and engraver from Suffolk who is particularly known for his " Oxonia Antiqua Restaurata", a detailed plan or birds-eye view map of Oxford. Some early maps of London and Cambridge were formerly attributed to him, but these attributions have since been regarded questionable.

Adam Black (1784-1874) was a Scottish publisher and politician who, with his brother Charles, founded the A & C Black publishing company. Together they published a wide range of materials, including atlases, medical books, and the 7th, 8th and 9th editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. This is a beautiful example of one of the earliest and interesting maps of London.

Large Advertising Poster on three sheets; total size 2310 x 1020 mm. Printed in colours for pasting onto billboards, this is a very scarce piece of Heath Robinson advertising material apparently not listed in any bibliography. Because it was intended for pasting and subsequent disposal very few copies will have survived. There is some fraying, especially to the edge of the top sheet, and a very small loss in the centre of the top sheet where it has been folded. Each sheet has been folded lengthwise once. Generally an excellent example of a very scarce item which we have been unable to trace elsewhere. Harry Tate [1872 - 1940] was a music hall comedian famous for his sketches on golf, motoring and fishing. Further digital images available on request.

Heath Robinson, with numerous illustrations in the text, title-pages printed in black and red, full-page photogravure plates at the front, pictorial end-papers printed in red. 4to, publisher's full white polished buckram, the covers ruled and decorated in gilt, the spines fully gilt decorated and lettered. xlii, 377; xliv, 350 pp. A fine set, the cloth clean and with very little evidence of age but for some very light mellowing to the spine panels. FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE, AND A PLEASING AND HANDSOME SET OF THIS TIMELESS WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST WRITERS OF ALL TIME. THIS EDITION IS WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY W. HEATH ROBINSON AND IS CONSIDERED A CLASSIC. AN "EXTRAVAGANT EDITION". "For most English readers Rabelais has taken the very form and pressure of his eccentric, full-blooded translator, and doubtless would have smiled upon the joyous excess to which Urquhart, with the aid of Cotgrave's lustily Rabelaisian Deictionary (1611) carried his verbal gymnastics" (OHEL). "One of the most perfect transfusions of an author from one language into another that ever man accomplished. In point of style Urquhart was Rabelais incarnate, and in his enjoyment of the verbal resources, whether of science or pseudo-science or slang, he almost surpassed Rabelais himself" (DNB). The original owner of these volumes, E. Hubert Litchfield was a noted personage. He was author of works relating to travel and adventure and was, quite significantly, a collector of fine and important books and manuscripts. His collection was sold by Sotheby's (Parke-Bernet) in December 1951. These volumes, with Mr. Litchfield's bookplates were sold in that sale. Both his signatures and armorial bookplates are within. The books have been privately owned for many years prior to their offering here.

        Tale of Peter Rabbit

1904. American Printing of 'Peter Rabbit'In the Original Dust JacketPOTTER, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Altemus' Wee Books for Wee Folks. Thirty-one Illustrations. Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1904. First Edition Printed in America, second format (printed ca. 1905).Sixteenmo (5 7/16 x 4 inches; 138 x 103 mm.). [3]-127, [3, blank] pp., including thirty-one color plates after the designs by Potter, and Peter Rabbit vignette on half-title. Text printed in black.Publisher's medium green cloth, cover stamped pictorially in black, white, blue, and red, spine and front cover lettered in red. Pictorial end-papers printed in orange, not of Potter's design. Original beige dust jacket, printed in green, red and yellow, with Altemus advertisement on back panel, Peter Rabbit picture and lettering on front, and "Altemus' Wee Books Peter Rabbit No. 3" lettered on spine. Jacket very slightly chipped at spine extremities, with minimal loss. With a Christmas, 1907 ink inscription on blank verso of frontispiece. A wonderful copy of this juvenile classic in the rare pictorial dust jacket. We presume our copy to have been published in 1905 as the last title listed on the rear panel of the dust jacket is "Who Killed Cock Robin" which was published in 1905."When Frederick Warne first published Peter Rabbit in London [in 1902], they sent a few copies to their firm in New York where, due to a misunderstanding, they were unfortunately sold before copyright was properly obtained. And for that reason the copyright for the book remains to this day in 'public domain' in the United States" (Quinby, p. 18). Altemus was the first to take advantage of this situation, copying the text and illustrations from Warne and issuing in 1904 not only the first pirated edition, but also the first edition printed in America. This edition was reprinted for several years without changing the "1904" date on the title-page. "Aletemus published Peter Rabbit in three different formats, The first format which is the rarest was published only in 1904" This little book had a gray cloth over floral boards, front cover with an oval color illustration of Peter Rabbit pasted-on. "By the end of 1904, Altemus had begun publishing the second format of the Wee Books for Wee Folks Series. Initially the book had a green cover? The inside of the book was identical to the first edition book. Between 1908-1912, Altemus published Peter Rabbit with a whitish/beige designed cover. This latter book dropped the decorated end papers. The illustrations are the same for the first three books. These books also have the curious set up such that there is a picture opposite of each page of text and then two blank pages. By 1917 a third format of the second edition was published. This blue book dropped the blank pages and the illustrations are different from preceding volumes. This book and all that followed it had 63 pages. The previous books had 123 pages." ( 2c; Linder, p. 109; V&A 1640 (Beatrix Potter's own copy).

Gründelwald, 30. XII. 1904. - 6 ½ SS. auf 2 Doppelbll. 8vo.

        Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

Edward Arnold, 1904. 1st edition. Hardcover, oatmeal-coloured buckram, with yapp edges, in near fine condition, spine not browned as is often the case. Internally, the pages and the four plates are clean bar an occasional light spot, name on fep, the tissue guard over the frontispiece intact, publisher's catalogue at rear. The author's first volume of eight ghost stories contains the classic tale 'Oh Whistle, And I'll Come To You, My Lad', and James hoped that all the stories in the book might make the reader feel 'pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall'. By general consent he achieved exactly that, and his influence on the genre of supernatural fiction has never been questioned. This particular copy of his famous book is very nice indeed.
