Forestry] A chromolithographed and manuscript charter for the Toledo, Ohio, branch or 'court' of the Order of Independent Foresters

Toronto Lithographing Co. Ltd, Toronto 1904 - Lithographed and manuscript text within elaborate chromolithographic surround. Overall toning, some expert small repaired tears. A very fine example of the chromolithographer's art. This exuberant example of turn-of-the-20th-century design, incorporating many symbolic elements - some of a general nature (personifications of Liberty, Justice, Benevolence and Truth), others of a more specific nature - the moose's head, the horn, bow and arrows, etc. This is a relatively early example of an Independent Order of Foresters charter - the Order originated in New Jersey in 1874 as a mutual benefit society. Currently, the majority of its over one million members are from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The charter is largely lithographic - only the date, the fourteen names of the 'First Staff of Officers' and details of the name and location of the Toledo 'court' are in manuscript.

        Ghost Stories Of An Antiquary

he First UK Printing published by Edward Arnold, London in 1904. With four illustrations by James McBryde. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. The correct First issue with 270 pages and 16 pages of advertisements to the rear dated November 1904. Original beige linen, stamped in black and red with yapped fore-edges. Only very slight markings to the covers and edges. Some spotting to the pastedowns, prelims and the frontispiece tissue guard. The uncut pages remain clean. Free from inscriptions. The red and black titling to the cover and the spine remains very bright with only mild toning to the spine cloth. The upper hinge is just starting to crack as commonly encountered but the book remains very tight. The first work of fiction by the distinguished scholar, educator, administrator and antiquarian who was one of the greatest ghost-story writers of all time. He was director of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, a noteworthy administrator of King's College, and Provost of Eton until his death in 1936. Among the eight extremely creepy stories in this volume is the frequently anthologized tale, 'The Mezzotint' (Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction, p. 279). Scarce to find in such condition. Collectible.

Seven Original Photographs, with related material

      - A fascinating collection of seven images taken and printed by Lewis W. Hine, several of his nephew George C. Rich, all of which came from the estate of Rich himself (Hine married Sara Ann Rich in 1904, George was the son of her brother Walter). In 1908 Hine became the photographer for the The National Child Labor Committee, and by all accounts his photographs were instrumental in changing the child labor laws in the United States, particularly in mills, mines, and factories. In his efforts, he apparently utilized his nephew as a subject for his photographs illustrating child labor. As follows:1. Approximately 5" x 7" gold-toned platinum portrait print on textured paper stock of an adolescent George C. Rich in cap. About fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George Rich by Lewis Hine."2. Approximately 5" x 7" gelatin silver portrait print of an adolescent George C. Rich in cap. Small chip in upper right corner, very good. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine." Note this is the identical image to #1 in a different photographic process.3. Approximately 5" x 7" gold-toned platinum portrait print of George C. Rich posed in profile. About fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine."4. Approximately 4" x 6" gelatin silver portrait print of W.C. Rich (George C. Rich's father). Small paper remnant on verso, about fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "W. C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine."5. Approximately 5.75" x 3.75" albumen print of a tractor in the field harvest. Very slightly faced, else about fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: " Combing Oats. Hine Photo."6. Approximately 5.75" x 3.75" albumen print of men, women, and children (one of whom might be George Rich) in a swimming hole in a rather desolate looking landscape. Very slightly faced, else about fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "Swimming Hole Garland. Hine Photo."7. Approximately 10" x 8" gelatin silver print of a man driving two cows on a road against a rural landscape. Nicks in three corners, not really affecting the image, otherwise a very deep and rich image, near fine. Signed on verso by "Lewis W. Hine (Delaware County, N.Y.)", and below that, written in Rich's hand: "Property of George & Doeretta Rich. Franklin, N.Y."With:8. Pamphlet: "For Child Labor Day 1921." New York: The National Child Labor Committee, 1921. Octavo. 13[3]pp. Relief half-tone photographically-illustrated stapled self-wrappers. Both front and back cover feature the same photographic image of a grinning young George C. Rich dressed in ragged overalls and a straw hat, with the photographer identified in print as Lewis W. Hine. Near fine. Written in Rich's hand on rear cover: "Property of G&D Rich."9. Hanging relief half-tone photographically-illustrated card with attached calendar for 1921, featuring the same image of Rich as on #8. Approximately 5.5" x 9". New York: Compliments of The National Child Labor Committee, 1921. Lacking the calendar leaves for January thru April, punch hole on top broken through, about very good.10. Identical to #9 (except condition). Hanging relief half-tone photographically-illustrated card with attached calendar for 1921, featuring the same image of Rich as on #8. Approximately 5.5" x 9". New York: Compliments of The National Child Labor Committee, 1921. Calendar leaves are all present, but chipping and trimming at the upper margins of the card, thus good only.         LOVECRAFT'S TEENAGE SCHOOL BOOKS WITH HIS HOLOGRAPH NAME AND ADDRESS IN EACH: Three volumes.

(Providence, RI:. Circa 1904-05).. Three of Lovecraft's well-worn school books from his teen years, each with his autograph name "H. P. LOVECRAFT" and address "PROVIDENCE/ R.I." on front endpaper. The first two volumes reveal a general teenage exuberance combined with the joy of having ones own (perhaps newly acquired) set of name and date stamps; whereas the third book, which is not dated by him, shows a more mature and restrained signature, leading us to believe it is from slightly later studies. The three books are A HAND-BOOK OF CLASSICAL GEOGRAPHY, CHRONOLOGY, MYTHOLOGY, AND ANTIQUITIES (By T. P. and W. F. Allen; Boston: 1861), with Lovecraft's signature and address as described above and date, also in his hand, "May 6, 1904," decoratively underlined (as is his address), and with his name and date stamped beneath. Also with the ownership signature "Franklin C. Clark / Feb. 25th 1865 / Providence RI / Brown University / Class of ‘69" written with a flourish the young Lovecraft seems to be emulate herein. "Franklin C. Clark (1847 - 1915) .... married LILLIAN DELORA PHILLIPS, WITH WHOM LOVECRAFT HAD LIVED illian Delora Phillips (1856-1932) in 1902; they had no children. She was the aunt of the CELEBRATED HORROR AUTHOR HOWARD P. LOVECRAFT (1890-1937), who CITED DR. CLARK'S ERUDITION AS AN EARLY INFLUENCE" (Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Collection web page for the Franklin C. Clark Papers). Also with brief note to text on p.83, presumably in Lovecraft's hand. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK LANGUAGE (by Asahel C. Kendrick; New York: 1846), with Lovecraft's signature and address as described above and street address, also in his hand, "598 Angell St.," and with his name and date "Aug 31 1905" stamped on endpaper and on title page. Also with Lovecraft's penciled notes in Latin on front and rear pastedowns which appear to compare Latin to Greek and German (with the former fairing better than either of the latter in the comparison), and with a few words in Greek we won't attempt. AND WITH LOVECRAFT'S HOME-MADE INDEX TO VOCABULARY SECTION pages [145] to [174] -- a penciled Greek alphabet running vertically down page [145] and fore edges pp.[147]-172 trimmed in varying lengths to create 14 tabs which Lovecraft has labeled accordingly, and with HIS PENCILED NOTE on page [174], "THIS BOOK WAS INDEXED BY HP LOVECRAFT SUN SEP 24 1905." And, last but not least, as they say, EXCERPTA EX SCRIPTIS PUBLII OVIDII NASONIS [Excerpts from the Writings of Ovid] (by B. A. Gould; Boston; 1848), with Lovecraft's autograph name and full address, including "U.S.A." in a more mature hand and with Lovecraft's extensive translation (?) notes to the first four sections of the book (pages 15 to 58). This final volume is in good condition; the other two are fair--the spine is missing entirely from one and partially from the other--but all three are otherwise complete. .

        The Heart of the Empire.

[c.1904]., London, - The Heart of the Empire Mezzotint. Proof impression, signed by the artist in pencil at lower left. One of 150 proof impressions of Niels Moeller Lund's iconic painting, 'The Heart of the Empire', signed by the artist. Lund (1863-1916) was a Danish-born artist who grew up in Newcastle. The print shows the heart of London's financial district, viewed from the roof of the Royal Exchange. It looks down on Bank Junction, with Mansion House on the left, surmounted by an English flag. Lund's print presents London's financial district as the powerhouse of British imperialism, providing the resources for expansion; Westminster and the Houses of Parliament appear only in the background. The architecture, such as that of Mansion House with its classical pediment and columns, also references the Roman Empire, to which the British Empire felt itself to be the heir. The original painting now hangs in the Guildhall Art Gallery. Image: 530 by 705mm (20.75 by 27.75 inches). Sheet: 670 by 808mm (26.5 by 31.75 inches).

Brocades of the Capital. The Seasons and Their Fashions

Tokyo: Akiyama Buemon, 1904. Silk on boards. Leporello. . Fine. Scarce, with no copies of this particular reprint on OCLC First Search, and the original version noted on OCLC but with no institutional holding noted. Leporello, 24 by 18 cm when closed. Thirteen double panelled color woodblock plates, including the title pages and then twelve numbered plates depicting genre scenes, several for each season. These scenes show women and children engaged in activities associated with the particular season. So for Spring, for instance, there is the "Parting of School-Chums" and "An Outing in a Field", the latter showing a boy chasing a butterfly as a mother and sister look on. Summer has a scene "Keeping Off Cloth-Moths", which shows women setting up clothing on a line to allow them to air. And so on. This leporello was originally commissioned by Mitsui Clothing Store in 1893 upon the changing of its name from Echigoya. The company then re-issued the book in 1904 at the time it became known as Mitsukoshi, a department store still in business, whose roots stretch back to 1673! As the title suggests, the plates are meant to showcase the garments worn. In each plate, therefore, the colors of the clothing are brilliant and jump off the page, while the coloring of everything else is more subdued. The plates are on a heavy card stock. A tissue guard lies between the panels, and this guard is pasted onto the side, requiring one to lift it up from center to side to reveal the full image of the plate. Captions in English and Japanese. The third plate has an ashen smudge on the forehead of one of the female figures. Otherwise, the book is in fine condition.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Berth, 1904-1906. Three papers in three. 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm). 11 pp., one text figure (Anwendungen); 12 pp., 2 text figures, large, folded plate (Dämpfung); 68 [32, 36], 5 text figures (Weitere Mittleilungen). Original uniform printed wrappers.= The Dutch medical doctor, physicist, and Nobel Prize winner Willem Einthoven (1860-1927) invented the first practical electrocardiogram (ECG) by creating a string galvanometer in 1903. In 1924, he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this invention. The present papers are the very rare offprints, "Überreicht vom Verfasser", of his reports on the structure and use of his string galvanometer, and form the basis for his Nobel Prize. Einthoven was only 26 when he was appointed professor of physiology at Leiden University. He coined the word electrocardiogram, and then invented the string galvanometer with the sole purpose to measure, accurately and meaningfully, the electrical activity of the heart over time. "In 1903 he defined the standard measure for general use - one centimeter movement of the ordinate for one millivolt tension difference and a shutter speed of twenty-five millimeters per second" (DSB). The work was published in the famous "Annalen der Physik, Vierte Folge, Band 14, 16, and 21" - the leading scientific journal of its day, and in which many Nobel Prize winners, including Einstein, published their most important scientific discoveries. The third paper is a consolidated offprint, originally published in two parts, with new pagination but continuous figure numbering. Tiny chip and stain to rear wrapper of the third paper. Otherwise very good, clean copies. Very rare. DSB IV, pp. 333-335.
