Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Frau Johann Strauss").

Wohl Wien, 7. IV. 1904. - 3½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-4to.

        The Works].

Golike i Vilborg Skt. Peterburg -1910 1904 - Three volumes folio, the third volume with 5 parts (33.5 x 22.5 cm). Title, [4], frontispiece, [2], 384, [4] pp, incl. 2 full page illustrations; Title, [2], frontispiece, [2], 362, [4], VIII pp, incl. 6 full page illustrations; [2], title, frontispiece, III, 589, II, [4] pp, title, [2], frontispiece, [2], 158, XXXV pp., incl. 5 full page illustrations, with multiple illustrations in text. Full tan calf, two morocco labels with gilt lettering to spines; a bit rubbed, with some scratches. Fresh example of one of the finest literary publications produced in the Russian Empire. Rare, from the limited edition of 500 copies distributed only among subscribers. The present copy is number 89. It includes the last part, part 5 of volume III, not present in Smirnov-Sokolskiy's library nor, strangely enough, in Muratova's listing. Friends of Gorbunov launched this lavish production to celebrate the author, and passed the profit from the sales onto his family. It became, thanks to the scholarly work put in it and the long list of works included, the best edition of Gorbunov's writings as well as an important source on the Russian theatre of the 19th century. It was also an impressive production, in a large format with high quality paper and fine plates, which led the Russian writer Vladimir Lidin to claim it to be one of the most luxurious editions ever printed in Russia ("Druziya moi - Knigi", 1962). Gorbunov (1831-95) was a talented actor, playwright and novelist. He became well known for his short stories depicting episodes from folk life, which were published in such periodicals as Iskra, Sovremennik, Russkiy Vestnik among others. In all his literary works he skilfully combined a deep knowledge of the common person's life and traditions, with an ability to see them from a humorous perspective. Muratova 5502; Smirnov-Sok. 2475; not in Kilgour, Gubar and Markov. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Wiesbaden, 29. Initials and Miniatures of the IXth, Xth, and XIth Centuries from Mozarabic Manuscripts of of Santo Domingo de Silos in the British Museum

New York: [Printed by the De Vinne Press], 1904. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. One of 350 copies, unnumbered. Presentation copy, inscribed in 1923 by the author. Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall. Archer M[ilton] Huntington (1870-1955) was a lifelong friend of the arts and philanthropist; known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies, he founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City; his cousin, Henry E. Huntington, founded the renowned Huntington Library in California. This volume was presented by the author in 1923 to Elijah Clarence Hills (1867-1932), a Professor in Florida and Colorado and a prolific author of Spanish-related books. The inscription is on Mr. Huntington's calling card, with "Mr." being crossed out, as follows: "To my friend E.C. Hills / with the high regard & / admiration of (printed name, Archer Huntington) / 1923". The calling card is tipped onto the front pastedown directly beneath Mr. Hills' elegant bookplate. This work was published to preserve the illuminated decorations and initials from the 9th through 11th centuries from manuscripts in the monastery of Silos, near Castile, which over many centuries and the ravages of many wars were at risk of being forever lost. As Mr. Huntington says in the Introduction: "The rarity alone of documents dating, as these do, from the ninth to the eleventh century renders them of the greatest interest; but where, in addition, such remarkable palaeographical and archaeological details are found, and such peculiarity in the application of design to the decoration of books, they become worthy of extended study and fit subjects for reproduction". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in tan cloth with the front board richly decorated as an illuminated manuscript in rust and green, letters outlined in black, green lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, plain endpapers, bookplate and author's inscription tipped onto front pastedown as referred to above, title page with two decorative initial capitals, volume opens with a four-page Introduction by Mr. Huntington, followed by a 3-page list of the Manuscripts used, followed by the illustrations which are printed on the recto only of each page with their number on the opposite page, printed on verso only, two tissue guards (we presume original with the rest having been lost); Elephant Folio in size (approximately 17" tall), unpaginated with approximately 100 leaves; limited edition of 350 copies, unnumbered, author's inscription as set forth above. ***CONDITION: Overall very good plus, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the prior owner bookplate and authorial inscription, it is entirely free of prior owner markings. There is some old dampstaining and soiling to the boards, we had a professional restorer do some minor restoration to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, which are all now sturdy (name available upon request). ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy volume, therefore additional postage will apply. We are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         La fée des poupées].

Ilin Skt. Peterburg 1904 - Complete set of twelve postcards (14.3 x 9.1 cm) printed in colours after Bakst, most heightened with gilt, [4]pp. list of postcards in Russian and French, cards 1, 6, 11 and 12 lighter, the others more brown, as usual. Bakst's masterpiece, according to fellow artist and art historian Alexandre Benois. During the first half of his career, Bakst (1866-1924) mostly painted landscapes, scenes and portraits. From the moment in 1899 however when he co-founded, with Serge Diaghilev, the art group Mir Isskustva [The World of Art], he progressively turned towards performing arts. He fully committed himself to his famous costume and stage designs from 1908-9 onwards, when Diaghilev created the Ballets Russes. The present work is a rare example of Bakst's early theatrical designs (1903), for the short ballet Feya kukol by Joseph Bayer, pre-dating his work for the Ballets Russes. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The History of The Standard Oil Company: 2 Volume Set

Minimal wear to extremities. No DJ to Volume I. Volume 1 has sunning to spine. Dust jacket to Vol. II with loss to spine of DJ. Clean, unmarked pages. Full, unabridged version containing chapters purged from later editions. Howes T-33. <br><br> "This work is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the editors of McClure's Magazine to deal concretely in their pages with the trust question. In order that their readers might have a clear and succinct notion of the processes by which a particular industry passes from the control of the many to that of the few, they decided a few years ago to publish a detailed narrative of the history of the growth of a particular trust. The Standard Oil Trust was chosen for obvious reasons. It was the first in the field, and it has furnished the methods, the charter, and the traditions for its followers. It is the most perfectly developed trust in existence; that is, it satisfies most nearly the trust ideal of entire control of the commodity in which it deals. Its vast profits have led its officers into various allied interests, such as railroads, shipping, gas, copper, iron, steel, as well as into banks and trust companies, and to the acquiring and solidifying of these interests it has applied the methods used in building up the Oil Trust. It has led in the struggle against legislation directed against combinations. Its power in state and Federal government, in the press, in the college, in the pulpit, is generally recognised. The perfection of the organisation of the Standard, the ability and daring with which it has carried out its projects, make it the pre-eminent trust of the world - the one whose story is best suited to illuminate the subject of combinations of capital. The officers of the company courteously offered to give me all the assistance in their power, an offer of which I have freely taken advantage. In accepting assistance from the Standard men as from independents I distinctly stated that I wanted facts, and that I reserved the right to use them according to my own judgement of their meaning, that my object was to learn more perfectly what was actually done - not to learn what my informants thought of what had been done. It is perhaps not too much to say that there is not a single important episode in the history of the Standard Oil Company, so far as I know it, or a notable step in the growth, which I have not discussed more or less fully with officers of the company." - from Preface.

AN ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF CHINA, 1904-1906. [Includes American Diplomats in Chi

      - [China 1904-1906]. Half red leather over marbled boards, recent binding, gold-stamped, very good, 35 x 27.5 cm., all edge gilt [most gone], 18 stiff leaves, 166 b.w. photos, one pencil drawing, one post card, one photo cut out, very clean. *** *** *** . . . AMERICAN "DOUGH BOYS" IN CHINA 1927 . . . DURING THE FIRST REVOLUTIONARY WAR . . THE FOUNDING OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY This excellent primary record was begun July 1904, and ended with the last photo caption dated June-August 1906. The work is an exceptionally clean example, with meticulous captions, clear and bright images, of varying sizes. The smallest is 6 x 4.5 cm., [ca 10 each] up to 23.5 x 17 cm. for the largest. With a large number of intermediary sizes in between. . * The captions are in both English & Italian, and a mix of both languages, carefully identifying the place & person photographed. From the kind of photographs and people in these, its is easy to deduce that this album was likely made by an Italian officer assigned as part of the protective foreign force for the Italian Embassy and diplomatic corps as guards. Assigned to China to continue to protect after the Boxer uprising, they protected both the foreign diplomatic community and their families. A good number of these are of Peking and of their excursions around China. . * Visits to Shan-Fan-Shan temple, photos of a friend who was in Seoul [Korea, riding a rickshaw], photos of some American military officers: ie "Lieut.         A Journal of a Tour of Discovery Across the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, in the Year 1813. Third edition.

Maitland: T. Dimmock, 1904. Small octavo, original dark wrappers, preserved in a bookform box. A fine copy of the so-called third edition (actually the fourth if a facsimile published in 1893 is included in the count), published by the author's grandson, Charles Blaxland. This edition includes excerpts of letters written to C.R. Blaxland about the 1813 expedition. This 1904 edition is actually one of the scarcer of the early imprints: the first edition of 1823 is practically unobtainable, while the limited editions published late in the nineteenth century (the second edition of 1870 and the 1893 facsimile) have become quite scarce. Provenance: Arthur Jose (1863-1934, journalist, historian and editor of the Australian Encyclopedia), inscribed to him in ink on front wrapper "with the [?publisher's] Compts"; private collection (Sydney). Wrappers a little faded; thin spine neatly renewed.

Quer durch Borneo : Ergebnisse Seiner Reisen in den Jahren 1894, 1896-97 und 1898-1900 - 2 Volumes

E J Brill, Leiden 1904 - Two volumes (complete). In German throughout. A steady, sound, serene set of this extraordinary study of the people of Borneo from the equally extraordinary Dutch explorer, Nieuwenhuis. The set has some wear, some aging. However it is most agreeable. Both are covered in decorated, gilt-stamped, cream cloth boards. The boards of both books are worn, scuffed, marked from storage and handling. They are benign and sure. The head of the spines have been securely repaired with leather patches. The frontis and end papers have wear and marks. They are placid. Volume 1: 493 pages. The trims and edges have wear. The pages are clean, clear, generous, certain, bold. There are very occasional handling marks and some very light foxing. All plates and maps present. Volume II (pub: 1907): 557 pages. The back board has been marked, stained and wrinkled from damp storage conditions. Whilst this has transferred ever so slightly to the preceding pages, these have no audacious marks or wrinkling. The pages are robustly secure. There is age-related foxing here and there about edges and seams. However, the pages are very assured, clean, clear, generous, competent, diligent. Despite the aging and wear, this is a gratifying set. fk [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

AN ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF CHINA, 1904-1906. [Includes American Diplomats in Chi

[China 1904-1906]. Half red leather over marbled boards, recent binding, gold-stamped, very good, 35 x 27.5 cm., all edge gilt [most gone], 18 stiff leaves, 166 b.w. photos, one pencil drawing, one post card, one photo cut out, very clean. This excellent primary record was begun July 1904, and ended with the last photo caption dated June-August 1906. The work is an exceptionally clean example, with meticulous captions, clear and bright images, of varying sizes. The smallest is 6 x 4.5 cm., [ca 10 each] up to 23.5 x 17 cm. for the largest. With a large number of intermediary sizes in between. * Visits to Shan-Fan-Shan temple, photos of a friend who was in Seoul [Korea, riding a rickshaw], photos of some American military officers: ie "Lieut. Clark & Capt. Brewster, Commandant of the Peking U.S. Delegation guard Lieutenant. Clark" et al. Polo on the Peking Polo grounds, Pei-Tai-ho [beach], one lovely one of "Casa di mia Isabella; next obviously a photo of the album's maker, and Italian, who freely associated freely with his American counterparts in the military & diplomatic corps. * A lovely pencil sketch of Francesco Rospidliosi, perhaps the creator of this album, dated August 1903. Peking race track grandstand, "Variag" Chemulko [Korea]: view of a belly-up ship in Korea, another dated April 1904 shows various diplomats: "Ministro d'Augustine...Mr. Uchida...do [of] Peking...," dragon boat in Shanghai, three great photos of horse-mounted officers, with caption and date "Warriors... 1904 Peking & Huang Ts'un" and their horses. * January 1905 the album continues with photos of the soldiers in Peking, their pet dog, horses, wagons, Chinese grooms &c. Then a lovely and grand size group photo some in military uniform others in civilian clothes [diplomats ?] most with long boots, dated "March 1905" most with Italian names, except for one penciled at the far right: "Swanton" and two women. Names appear above and below the photo which is 23.5 x 17 cm. Next 2 page show horse racing, honor guards in formation "April 1905," going to church, photos of Peking race horses and their foreign mounts "May 1905." Next pair of pages show a "September 1905 Trip to the Great Wall with Mrs. Brewster & Miss Brewster, at Sha-ho Chinese hotel, Nan-ko Pass, Mrs. David at Peitai-ho," and along the way to the Great wall, with stunning photos of the impressive and grand size "First Gate." Their horse-drawn stage coach-like "wagon" straight out of the old American West ! Photos of three foreign children, "Peking 1905." On the next page, more of the Great Wall excursion: Capt. & Mrs. Brewster, along side the Great Wall & of course photos from on top of the Great wall all nicely dated ! Next set show more on the Great Wall, and "Coming back without Toda and a superb photo of the album compiler mounted on horseback with "doggie" standing at attention ! * The next pair shows Shanghai naval officer and horse wagon, another of two foreign children in a large Jinriksha in Peking 1905, with another of the children in great fur coats. Postcard of the Wuta-su Temple of Seven Pagodas, Peking. More horse-mounted photos, Peking race course. * The next page shows some important and spectacular photos. "Miss Roosevelt [Eleanor] [wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who held that office from 1933 to 1945], Capt. Diconard, Military Attaché [USA], Mr. Rockhill U.S. Minister [please inquire with us to see if we have some of his important books on Tibet in stock], Mr. Cooledge First American Legation, Miss Roosevelt, Chinaman...Peking Sept. 1905. These great people are greeted by a group of Chinese Imperial Mandarins wearing special hats and long white gowns. Another of "Miss Roosevelt, M. Mrs. di Almeida, Capt. Pringle Peking 1905." * Then a larger and quite stunning photo of [Italian] Naval officers...and Americans: "Mrs. Brewster, Commandant Cipriani, Miss Brewster, Guardia della Degarione d'Italia...Capitano Brewster[American]..." all seated before a great Fu Dog for a camera pose. * The album continues, then a rather sad photo of the "Portion of the remains of the French Catholic Mission residence of La Varche & Ma-murdered Nan Chang March 1906" & "Kinghams chapel in background...burnt house is right around March 1906." Adjacent to this is "Ring leader of attack on Kingham's house [Han Chang] March 1906." * Next 2 pages show more ruined church, with "corner of house in which Mr. & Mrs. Kingham and the little daughter Gracie ...they were beaten to death in this corner-blood stains March 1906." Next shows "Four men who conducted murder torture having taken part in the murder of the Kinghams and burning of their mission March 1906" shows four Chinese handcuffed to a steel ring around their necks. We now learn the true level of danger for foreigners in China and the reason for the foreign troops to give protection to the innocents murdered by Chinese. * The next page shows an inspection of the palace by Capt. Lynne, Doct. Dawe, H.M. Tripe at Han Chang March 1906. Arrival of the Chinese delegation for the "Han Chang [murder of foreign missionaries] affair. Next two show a visit to Hankow, the race course, grand stand, Miss Byron, A.W. Cross, another shows 1st Lieut. F.E.K. Strong playing banjo, April 1906. Shipboard travel on the H.M.S. Cadmus. Continue ship travel to Hankow on board the "Calabria" and a nice photo of A.W. Cross, Commissioner, Hankow, another of S.S. Marco Polo at Hankow. Apparently, the military group was now moved to Hankow, where memorial photos were taken aboard ship, with the officers all named around the photo. Next shows "Consulato d'Italia, Hankow August 1906." Other pages show H.M.S. Clarity, the Han river ..."with daddy & Miss Hart June 1906," and other ship and harbor views. Next shows a great French cruiser "Descartes" at Kiukiang, Kiukiang Bund, Commissioner's garden, Festa del Dragones [dragon boats, country walks with Mrs. Lay et al. The album ends with June-August 1906 dated photos rest at "Bungalow" in Kiu Kiang. Where they visited with British administrators and missionaries. * Rare insight to the diplomatic world of foreigners stationed in China at the turn-of-the century. Fascinating primary resource. There are very few albums that cover this rare aspect of life in China from the higher social structure of foreign diplomats and military people. Keen insights to the life and customs of the privileged people. * .
