Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

London: Edward Arnold, 1904 - The first work of fiction by the distinguished scholar, educator, administrator and antiquarian who was one of the greatest ghost-story writers of all time. Had he not written in the genre, Rhodes, born in 1862, would have been remembered as a writer and expert on apocryphal literature and medieval manuscripts, as director of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, a noteworthy administrator of King's College, and Provost of Eton until his death in 1936. Instead, we know him as a masterful narrator who 'surpassed most writers of ghost stories in the eeriness of his atmosphere, the individual and peculiarly creepy quality of his plots, and the vindictiveness and maligancy of his ghosts." (Kunitz & Haycraft, Twentieth Century Authors). Among the eight extremely creepy stories in this volume is the frequently anthologized tale, "The Mezzotint" First edition. 8vo. With four illustrations by James McBryde. 270, [16, ads, dated November 1904] pp. Original beige linen, stamped in black and red, yapp fore-edges. Spine and edges a trifle darkened and soiled, upper hinge cracked., early gift inscription on title page. Very good, in custom black, morocco-backed clamshell case.

G. K. Chesterton.

London: 1904 - Image size: 22 x 17.3 cm. Mount size: 45.7 x 27.8 cm. Framed in a hand finished black wooden frame. Light toning to mount otherwise in excellent condition. Monochrome photogravure tipped onto a white wove mount. Produced under the personal supervision of Coburn on his own copper plate press. Proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature). G. K. Chesterton titled to the foot of the mount in Coburn's hand. Tipped on to a much larger mount than that published in "Men of Mark". Coburn's first book of portraits "Men of Mark" was published in 1911 (it was followed some years later by More Men of Mark) features 33 portraits of artists, thinkers and writers such as George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Frank Brangwyn, William Butler Yeats, Robert Bridges etc. Coburn's introductory text provides a running commentary on his pursuit of his subjects and their eventual capture on film. 'To make satisfactory photographs of persons it is necessary for me to like them, to admire them, or at least to be interested in them. It is rather curious and difficult to exactly explain, but if I dislike my subject it is sure to come out in the resulting portrait. I had thought of using 'Men of Genius' as the title for this book, but Arnold Bennett objected seriously, saying, very modestly, that he did not consider himself a man of genius, but merely a working author, and absolutely refusing to join the throng unless I changed it, so I told him that if he would give me a better one I would use it. 'Men of Mark' is his alternative. '

First edition. Surprisingly uncommon, OCLC showing just 30 locations worldwide. Military memoir of thirty years service in which Riddick detects a "higher than usual level of intelligence" in operation. Born in 1820 Vaughan was educated at Rugby and gazetted as a cadet and posted to the Indian Army in 1840. Saw action at Maharajpur in the Gwalior Campaign of 1843-4; acted as Deputy Quarter Master General to the Turkish Contingent in the Crimean War; during the Mutiny commanded the 5th Punjab Infantry at Lucknow, and during the clearing of Oudh; present in the Umbeyla Campaign 1863; commanded a brigade in the Black Mountain Expedition of 1868; 1869 command of the Gwalior District, and retirement. "A brilliant linguist, Vaughan published both a grammar and a vocabulary of Pushtu … Due to rapid promotion and army procedures Vaughan lost the chance for further assignment in India. Accordingly in 1878 he became a correspondent and the only one to accompany Lord Roberts's forces top Kabul and then Kandahar during the Second Afghan War". While Times correspondent he made a visit to the Persian Gulf to enquire into the Persian Gulf visiting Bunder Abbas, Bahrein, Bushire, Kuwait, and Baghdad where the Resident, Col. S.B. Miles "gave [me] quarters and a hearty welcome at the Residency" and "under whose auspices" Vaughan "was able to devote a few days … to seeing something of Baghdad and its society". Described by Matthews as a "useful record".

The first printing was of 20,000 copies in September 1904, the second printing was of 10,000 copies in October 1904. They are apparently identical, and so, even thought this copy has all the first issue points, we do not know if it is the first or second printing. Housed in a custom made slipcase. The Simple Life De Gang

Piedmont, California, 1904. Cloth. Very Good. Oblong, 20 by 27 cm. 14 pp. of ink and watercolor drawings of amusing, preposterous cartoon scenes mostly of family life in a decidedly upper crust, eccentric California family. The artwork resembles the modern cartoonist Roz Chast, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker. The most striking illustration is a double paged depiction of "Maddie's Birthday Party", which would appear to have been a masquerade party with the guests dressing up as characters mostly from opera and operetta (Tannhauser, The Mikado, Carmen). While the figures in all the drawings have a rough crudity about them, this is also the source of their subversive charm, and the corseted times are upended into something more spontaneous, slapdash and not entirely removed from our more unbuttoned culture. Whether or not the artist was capable of realistic portraiture, she surely knew how to capture movement, and all the drawings convey action and movement very effectively. We may not be privy to the inside jokes at the bottom of the drawings, but it really doesn't matter, as the color, joy and dynamism of the cartoons come together to pull us in. On the cover is written The Century Co., New York, but surely this was the author/artist having a bit of fun, for this is an unpublished manuscript. The title page in facts states a location of Piedmont, which is in the East Bay of San Francisco. The surname of the artist is unknown. Soiling to the cloth cover.

Signed postcard photograph ("R. Leoncavallo") with autograph musical quotation from the first act of his opera La Boheme

. A fine bust-length photograph of the composer with his trademark handlebar mustache, boldly signed in black ink and dated Berlin, June 1904. With a two-measure autograph musical quotation to upper left, with text, identified in the composer's hand as being from "La Boheme I Act." Addressed to Fraulein Grete Larass in Berlin. Very slightly worn at edges; remnants of tape to edges of verso.. ["Leoncavallo"] completed his version of Murger's Scenes de la vie de Boheme, on which he had been working since 1892, and its first performance was carefully supervised by his new publisher Sonzogno in Venice in 1897. The long period of composition during which he sought to convey the realities of life in the Latin Quarter of Paris was preceded by fierce controversy with Puccini and the Ricordi publishing house. It was Leoncavallo who first had the idea of making it into an opera, but his Boheme, although it has pages full of vitality, is much more a social document of the period, and after the first years in which the two operas were performed almost side by side, it was Puccini's version that survived in the repertory." Alphonso XII\'s biological paternity is uncertain, though his legal paternity is not: his mother was married to her homosexual cousin Maria Fernando Francisco de Asis, eldest son of the duke of Cadiz, at the time of Alfonso\'s conception and birth. Alfonso\'s biological father is said to have been Enrique Puig y Moltó, a captain of the guard. When Queen Isabella and her husband were forced to leave Spain by the revolution of 1868, Alfonso XII accompanied them to Paris, and from there he was sent to the Theresianum at Vienna to continue his studies. On June 25, 1870 he was recalled to Paris, where his mother abdicated in his favour, in the presence of a number of Spanish nobles who had followed the fortunes of th

An exceptional aeronautical relic! The Wright brothers? prop shaft oiler, which was used on the 1904 Wright Flyer II and the 1905 Wright Flyer III, the latter deemed ?the first practical airplane?

Prop shaft oiler is approximately 4.75? long and approximately 1.5? in diameter at its widest point. On top the oiler is stamped, ?LUNKENHEIMER No. 0 SENTINEL FIG. 1300, MADE IN THE U.S.A.? Fine Condition. Although this piece of machinery was not in the first powered aircraft built by the Wrights that flew at Kitty Hawk, it was a vital part of the next two, and reflects the innovation their experiments required. The 1904 Wright Flyer II was most definitely a new and improved version of their first attempt. While it was similar in design to the original 1903 Flyer, it had a more powerful engine and used white pine instead of spruce for the frame. All-in-all the new Flyer was 200 pounds heavier than the 1903 machine. This oiler was an important addition to the Wright Flyer II and to aeronautics in general, because it was used to solve the problem of the engine overheating, thus allowing for the Wrights to begin taking longer flights. Produced by the Lunkenheimer Company

London and Glasgow: Collins' Clear-Type Press, [September, 1904]. First edition, first issue. Octavo (7 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 181 x 121 mm.). 204 pp. Title-page printed in black without any mention of Arthur Rackham. Eight color plates. Original green cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in black, blue, gray and light green. Spine similarly decorated in colors and lettered in black on a gilt block and with the authors name in full. Green pictorial endpapers.Latimore and Haskell, page 23. Riall, page 57. Note: There are several bindings of this book. The one at hand seems to combine characteristics from several issues described by Latimore and Haskell. Riall mentions an earlier September 1904 issue, bound in green or pink cloth. The illustrations in the September issue have the number of the page they illustrate in the lower right-hand corner, while there are no page numbers on the plates of the December issue. Later editions have only the name "R.H. Dana" on the spine. This book has always been a bibliographic puzzle, but we are certain that this is one of the earliest printings from September 1904.We have sold (more than thirty years ago) a December 1904 copy with the "Scud" picture on the front cover and with the authors name in full on the spine BUT the title-page was printed in red and black and none of the plates had the page number in the lower right hand corner. This copy had a school prize label dated December 1904.
