PARADISI IN SOLE PARADISUS TERRESTRIS . . . FAITHFULLY REPRINTED FROM THE EDITION OF 1629

London: Methuen & Co, 1904. n. Hardcover. 381 x 235 mm (15 x 9 1/4"). 8 p.l., 612, 16 pp. HANDSOME RECENT BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT AND INLAID, BY BAYNTUN-RIVIERE (stamp-signed on rear doublure), covers with border of gilt rules flanking the subtitle of the work (beginning on the upper cover with "A garden of all sorts of pleasant flowers which our English ayre will permitt to be noursed . . ." and concluding on the lower cover with "together with the right orderinge, planting & preferung of them & their uses & vertues"), each board with a large central panel featuring four widely spaced vertical gilt rules and three horizontal double rows of undulating leaves, giving the effect of a neatly ordered fruit orchard (and looking rather like a vegetal oscilloscope), five of the arches in each row crowned by an inlaid red fruit; raised bands, spine compartments with leafy gilt frames, DARK RED CRUSHED MOROCCO DOUBLURES studded around the edges with 40 small inlaid brown dots (like nails), doublures with a delicate gilt frame featuring daisy cornerpieces and leafy accents, red silk endleaves, top edge gilt. In an excellent felt-lined slipcase with morocco lip. Woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials, author's portrait, illustrated title page depicting the Garden of Eden, three small illustrations in text, and 109 fine full-page woodcut illustrations of flowers, vegetables, and fruits almost certainly by Christopher Switzer, showing nearly 800 plants. Original edition: Henrey 282; Hunt 215; Nissen BBI 1489; Pritzel 6933; STC 19300. A hint of foxing and occasional faint creasing, but a very fine copy, the text clean, fresh, and especially bright, and the imaginative binding pristine. Very attractively bound in an animated binding, this is a fine facsimile of the most famous English gardening book of the 17th century, and the most beloved for its personal and endearing style. Based on the contents of the author's own gardens, this manual, of which the first three words of the curious title ("Park in the Sun") form a pun on Parkinson's name, gives us directions for creating an "Earthly Paradise." In his preface dedicated to Queen Henrietta Maria, the author argues that the first gardening experiences of mankind involved God and Adam, and our author indicates that all of Adam's descendants have been imbued with a knowledge of gardening. He describes the different plants that can flourish in the "English ayre," and their uses, and gives advice on planting and maintaining gardens of three types--the flower garden, kitchen garden, and fruit orchard. Henrey calls the book "the earliest important treatise on horticulture to be published in [England]," and observes that "part of the charm of the 'Paradisius' lies in the author's love of plants and his sensibility of their beauty, feelings strongly reflected throughout his writing. His book is of interest and value as a record of the state of horticulture in England at the beginning of the 17th century." John Parkinson (1567-1650) was a practicing apothecary with a private botanical garden at Long Acre in London when he was appointed apothecary to James I. Our binding is a good example of the more recent decorative work done by the Bayntun bindery, founded in Bath in 1894 and now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership. Since the stamped signature at the back here reads "Bayntun-Riviere," our volume was obviously covered after 1937, when Bayntun acquired the Riviere bindery, which had been in business since 1829; the binding probably was done within the past decade.

The History of The Standard Oil Company - Two Volume Set

New York: McClure, Phillips & Co.. Hardcover. Volume One: 406 pages. Volume Two: 409 pages including index. "This work is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the editors of McClure's Magazine to deal concretely in their pages with the trust question. In order that their readers might have a clear and succinct notion of the processes by which a particular industry passes from the control of the many to that of the few, they decided a few years ago to publish a detailed narrative of the history of the growth of a particular trust. The Standard Oil Trust was chosen for obvious reasons. It was the first in the field, and it has furnished the methods, the charter, and the traditions for its followers. It is the most perfectly developed trust in existence; that is, it satisfies most nearly the trust ideal of entire control of the commodity in which it deals. Its vast profits have led its officers into various allied interests, such as railroads, shipping, gas, copper, iron, steel, as well as into banks and trust companies, and to the acquiring and solidifying of these interests it has applied the methods used in building up the Oil Trust. It has led in the struggle against legislation directed against combinations. Its power in state and Federal government, in the press, in the college, in the pulpit, is generally recognised. The perfection of the organisation of the Standard, the ability and daring with which it has carried out its projects, make it the pre-eminent trust of the world - the one whose story is best suited to illuminate the subject of combinations of capital... The officers of the company courteously offered to give me all the assistance in their power, an offer of which I have freely taken advantage. In accepting assistance from the Standard men as from independents I distinctly stated that I wanted facts, and that I reserved the right to use them according to my own judgement of their meaning, that my object was to learn more perfectly what was actually done - not to learn what my informants thought of what had been done. It is perhaps not too much to say that there is not a single important episode in the history of the Standard Oil Company, so far as I know it, or a notable step in the growth, which I have not discussed more or less fully with officers of the company." - from Preface. Each volume with tissue protected frontis image of J.D. Rockefeller plus numerous black and white portraits, pictures and diagrams. Top edges gilt. Clearly legible gilt lettering upon spines. Decorative title embossed upon red front board of each volume. Moderate to average wear overall. Modicum of library markings to each volume else unmarked. Crack along front hinge of Volume One. Nice copy of this most significant work. . Good. 1904. First Edition.

'This work is intended by the Publishers to supply a long felt want in our antiquarian literature, and at the same time to provide in convenient form a souvenir of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales. Since the great period of restoration under Sir. G. G. Scott, no finely produced series of pictures of these churches has been placed upon the market though a wonderful number of guide books have greatly increased the public appreciation of their beauties. Messrs. Dennis have aimed at giving a complete pictorial survey, and have spared no expense to make it in every way worthy of such a splendid subject. Eight pictures of each cathedral have been carefully selected and reproduced by a new carbon process, short descriptive letterpress facing each print. A general introduction to the history and architecture of each cathedral is also given. Mr. Fairbairns has personally visited every cathedral, and has aimed all through at a critical, though sympathetic, interpretation of their beauties. The notes are free from all technicalities, which so often tend to annoy the general reader. 'Condition: In original paper wraps. Externally, smart but with some edgewear and occasional chipping.         IDYLLS OF THE KING

London: Macmillan & Co, 1904. n. Hardcover. 162 x 124 mm (6 3/8 x 4 7/8"). 4 p.l., 421 pp. VERY APPEALING RED CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT AND INLAID, BY RAMAGE (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with lovely inlaid frame of citron morocco heavily tooled in gilt and with repeated black inlays of a strapwork ornament, raised bands, spine similarly gilt and inlaid, gilt titling, turn-ins delicately tooled with gilt flowers and decorative rolls, ivory-colored watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. Preliminary blank with armorial bookplate of Annie Freeman. Minor rubbing to front joint, faint graze to lower board, a few pale spots to moiré endleaves, light foxing to first few leaves, but still an excellent copy, generally clean and fresh internally, and the handsome binding with no significant wear. This handsome Ramage binding exhibits the firm's talent for meticulous inlays, and adds an overlay of shimmering gilt work like an intricate filigree frame. Though the range of their designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work--as can clearly be seen here. "Idylls of the King" is Tennyson's most celebrated work, inspired by the legends of King Arthur. A private printing of the first two "Idylls" appeared in 1857, and the complete set of 12 parts collected in our volume was first issued in 1889.

The top 3/4 inch of the jacket spine is missing and there are a few short tears on the extremities, but overall this very rare dust jacket is in very good condition.Illustrator Jessie Willcox Smith was one of the most acclaimed of Howard Pyle’s students. She became an accomplished child-portraitist and can be counted among "the most popular and best-known artists in America" (Dalby, 38).In the Closed Room is a short story about a shy, quiet little girl (Judith) living in a big city.         On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the Aether

Taylor & Francis, London 1904 - Rare offprint issue of the Brace experiment - the first optical experiment measuring the relative motion of Earth and the luminiferous aether which was sufficiently precise to detect magnitudes of second order to v/c. The Brace experiment was of great importance for the development of the Lorentz transformation and consequently of the theory of relativity. "De Witt Bristol Brace [1859-1905], professor of physics and specialist in optics at the University of Nebraska, is best remembered for his experimental test of the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction hypothesis in 1904 . In 1904 the opportunity arose for Brace to apply the extremely sensitive optical techniques he had developed to one of the crucial problems of his day. Two years earlier, Lord Rayleigh had proposed that the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction, if it existed, might produce an observable double refraction in a moving transparent medium. Rayleigh made experiments in which he failed to find the predicted effect, but his work was not quite accurate enough to be conclusive. Brace pointed this out and reconducted the investigation in his own laboratory, establishing beyond a doubt the absence of double refraction caused by movement of the refracting medium through the ether." (DSB). Offprint from: Philosophical Magazine, series 7.volume 40 pp 317–329, original pink wrappers, pp [317] 318329 [3:blank], dine and clean - an excellent copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Jahrbuch 1979; Nissen, Zool. 1783 This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. <br><br> Kunstformen der Natur (German for Art Forms of Nature) is a book of lithographic and autotype prints by German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Originally published in sets of ten between 1899 and 1904 and collectively in two volumes in 1904, it consists of 100 prints of various organisms, many of which were first described by Haeckel himself. Over the course of his career, over 1000 engravings were produced based on Haeckel&#39;s sketches and watercolors; many of the best of these were chosen for Kunstformen der Natur, translated from sketch to print by lithographer Adolf Giltsch. <BR> According to Haeckel scholar Olaf Breidbach (the editor of modern editions of Kunstformen), the work was "not just a book of illustrations but also the summation of his view of the world." The over-riding themes of the Kunstformen plates are symmetry and organization. The subjects were selected to embody organization, from the scale patterns of boxfishes to the spirals of ammonites to the perfect symmetries of jellies and microorganisms, while images composing each plate are arranged for maximum visual impact. Among the notable prints are numerous radiolarians, which Haeckel helped to popularize among amateur microscopists; at least one example is found in almost every set of 10. Cnidaria also feature prominently throughout the book, including sea anemones as well as Siphonophorae, Semaeostomeae, and other medusae. <br>Kunstformen der Natur was influential in early 20th-century art, architecture, and design, bridging the gap between science and art. In particular, many artists associated with Art Nouveau were influenced by Haeckel&#39;s images, including René Binet, Karl Blossfeldt, Hans Christiansen, and Emile Galle. One prominent example is the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage, which was in part inspired by Kunstformen illustrations.

The Works of Benjamin Disraeil, Earl of Beaconsfield - 20 vols.

      M. Walter Dunne, London 1904 - The Primrose edition, #488/999 sets, with the limitation page designed by Dwiggins and SIGNED by editor Robert Arnot in vol. 1. A very handsome set, in full-leather "Saint Dunstan binding" (stamped thus on spines). This is an elaborately decorated style of binding, variously attributed to Samuel Mearn, of Charles II's court, or to Louis Douceur, of Louis XV's court. The leather is of various colors but the decorations on the spines are identical; decorations on the covers vary from novel to novel, and most have 2 or 3 colors, in imitation of leather inlay (which this is not). Overall rated vg-; each volume has a light scar on the front pastedown from a removed bookplate, and the front hinges of #s 1, 4, 13 & 19 are starting. #s 5 & 6 are lightly chipped at the bottom of the spines, and #12 at the top. #s 6, 7 and 15 have sm. scars on the spines (not easily visible). #16 has a very light splatter stain. #19 has a sratch on the rear board. All plates are present, and represent some very fine work; in addition to the inimitable Dwiggins, there are many plates by the great Herman Rountree, and additional contributions by Frederick Morgan, Francis Vaux Wilson, and George Alfred Williams. This set will definitely cost extra to ship, as we will take special care in wrapping these delicate volumes, and it will probably require several boxes. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
