A Unique Collection of Explicit Amateur Photographs of Gay Sex, along with a wealth of related photographic evidence and theatrical regalia, circa 1900-1906

(Harrisburg, Pennsylvania). [circa 1904-1908]. A highly intriguing collection of 96 vernacular photographs, mostly real photo postcards, with seven items of regalia that provide an intimate window into the closeted homosexual activities of at least two working class men from Pennsylvania at the turn of the 19th Century, most specifically captured in 10 explicit photographs depicting sexual activity, two of which feature items of regalia that are present in the collection. Most of the photographs are 5" x 7" silver gelatin postcards; about a third are cyanotypes, several dozen of which have been hand-colored, and about ten slightly larger cabinet cards. The regalia includes a Roman-style waist apron or cingulum, decorated with sequins and beads, a steel sword with scabbard, a leather sword belt with chain hangers, a metal shield, and a medieval knight's visored helmet. Overall the photographs are near fine with some light wear and toning to the regalia from age but in remarkably well-preserved condition.Only one of the photographs, of a young girl dressed in Native American costume, is identified with a name on the back. From this evidence it has been possible to identify her father, who we believe was probably the principle photographer of most of the images, but who also appears in many of the photographs (some hand-colored) dressed in various theatrical costumes, and in regular clothing with his wife and two children, and with other family members. Census data indicates that he was a clerk, and later a bookkeeper, for a transit company in Harrisburg. There is a street view of him and fellow employee's standing in front of the transit company's doorway, in premises next door to a barber shop and bathhouse that appears prominently in several of the photographs. Another street view (of horse-drawn chaises) shows a partial image of the outdoor sign in the foreground: "Baths - Shaving Parlor," and there are a few interior views of the barber's chairs and mirrors. The photographer and a few other men, including one unidentified man who also features prominently in many photographs, were members of the Ancient Order Knights of the Mystic Chain (A.O.K.M.C.), a small splinter group of the fraternal order of The Knights of Pythias, a branch that was largely confined to central Pennsylvania. Presumably the regalia in the photographs was used for rites in the Order, but several of the same items were also used for theatrical performances.More interestingly, and of direct interest to this archive are two items that are present in the photographs; a medieval helmet used to conceal the identity of a man masturbating; and a wristband worn on the arm of a man, his face veiled, but otherwise nude except for Roman-style sandals. Three additional prints show a man, probably the photographer, partially clad in costume dress or hand-colored to conceal his identity, displaying his erection, while six additional explicit prints show two men engaging in homosexual sex. In a few of the images, the prints have been altered, in one case by smearing the emulsion itself, in order to make it look as if the person being penetrated has long hair (i.e. is a woman). In most of the explicit images, the photographer can be seen operating the camera with a remote control shutter release on a long wire. While the other less explicit photographs are interesting of themselves, taken together, the 96 photographs comprise an uncommonly rich body of evidence concerning the identity and context of what is a truly remarkable group of explicit homosexual amateur photography. These informal snapshots, taken by an amateur photographer, at a time when advances in photographic technology had just barely made it possible for amateurs both to create informal images and process their own prints at home or other private locations. The real photo postcards (none of which had been mailed, some for obvious reasons) are comprised mostly of informal snapshots: they include a few duplicate prints (in silver gelatin and cyanotype), and several variant prints of the same image that have been toned, and/or cropped in various ways, whereby the image is printed in the form of a pointed star or iron cross. Among this group are over 50 prints of the amateur photographer, his unidentified partner, and other men dressed in various theatrical costumes (ranging from medieval jesters, the Jack of Hearts, Knights, or Cavaliers), about half of these have been hand-colored. These range from one or two color highlights on the costumes, to more extensive highlighting and toning in multiple colors, especially on the sexually explicit prints, some of which have the faces masked in black, or the hair colored or made more feminine. Also included are two mounted, larger scale prints, one of the photographer and the other of his partner, that have been extensively hand-colored in multiple colors.Rounding out the collection are about 30 family photographs: most are informal portraits of several generations of family members, the photographer and his rather dour and stout wife, their two daughters, and other relatives, including a few interior views of their house (one with a large Christmas tree), and a few outdoor snapshots. Also included are four cabinet cards that display both the formal hallmarks of conventional studio portraits. Three are of the amateur photographer in elaborate white cavalier dress with his 36" sword, in two of these he is wearing a black mask. A fourth cabinet card is of an unidentified man (very likely the man's lover, who also appears in 16 of the real photo post card prints) who is dressed in an elaborate Native American costume complete with headdress, and the fifth is the aforementioned image of the daughter in Indian costume.Professional pornographic photographs were invented about ten minutes after the invention of photography, and professionally produced pornographic gay photography were not all that far behind, particularly in Europe. However, this group represents a truly remarkable series of American amateur explicit gay photographs, which had they been contemporarily revealed would have had grave legal and social repercussions. While many images are encountered or advertised in the marketplace as being of "gay interest" - mostly of effeminate-looking men, or of men being particularly affectionate with each other - explicit amateur gay sex photographs of this vintage are of exceptional rarity. This documentary collection predates by nearly half a century most of the known amateur explicit homosexual photography. A detailed list is available upon request. .

GREEN MANSIONS

Duckworth 1904 - First edition, first issue binding without the publisher's device on the rear board. Original green cloth titled in gilt. AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed to John Galsworthy. A near fine copy with very minor fading to the spine and slight foxing to the endpapers. A highly significant presentation copy of Hudson's best known and most reprinted novel. Galsworthy was instrumental in getting Green Mansions published in America thus furthering its popularity. In spite of some success in Britain, no American edition of Green Mansions had been forthcoming, but in 1916 at Galsworthy's urging, Knopf published an edition with an introduction by Galsworthy in which he said of Hudson, "His work is a vision of natural beauty and of human life as it might be, quickened and sweetened by the sun and the wind and the rain, and by fellowship with all the other forms of life--the truest vision now being given to us, who are more in want of it than any generation has ever been. A very great writer; and--to my thinking--the most valuable our age possesses." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Quarto (12" x 8 1/2") rebound in brown cloth and black uniform labels in gilt lettering and original wrappers bound in. 1st edition.Includes over 4000 titles with many title pages and wood-cuts reproduced, arranged in chronological order. He goes into great detail about virtually every book. Introduction deals with the individual printers and printing houses.Jose Toribio Medina was born on October 21, 1852, in Santiago, Chile. His father was a judge, Jose of the Medina Pillar, and his mother, Mariana Zavala, was of Basque ancestry. When he was three years old, Medina's father was named judge of Talca. There Medina attended a private school called Santiago. In 1860 the family was transferred to Valparaiso, but just two years later Medina's father became a quadriplegic when he was only 33 years old. Medina's father was sent to live in Santiago, and his mother was given a government pension on which to live and support the family. In 1865 Medina entered the National Institute and graduated in 1869, awarded with prizes in Latin and literature. Medina received an appointment as secretary of the Chilean legation to Lima, Peru, the same year he graduated law school. While in Lima he discovered the remarkable National Library under the guidance of its director, Francisco de Paula Rodriguez Vigil. Medina was not partial to diplomatic work, though it enabled him to travel and to saturate himself in the work he came to love as an investigator into the history of Chile through its volumes of documents. By 1875 he published his first volume of documentary history, a 17th century manuscript, Memories of the Kingdom of Chile and Don Francisco Meneses, written by Friar Juan de Jesus Maria. His travel became increasingly frequent, both to Europe and to the United States, digging through archives and searching to fill his bibliographies. In 1877 he published a 1,300-page volume titled History of the Colonial Literature of Chile. He went on to publish numerous bibliographies of works printed in the colonial period through out Latin America.Condition:Some pages age darkened else a very good set.

King Alphonso XIII of Spain writes a letter of State announcing the death of his grandmother Queen Isabel II

Printed Document Signed, "Alfonso", King of Spain, 1p, 9.5" x 14", April 29, 1904, Malaga, Spain, being an announcement by King Alphonso XIII of Spain upon the death of his grandmother, Queen Isabel II of Spain. His father, Alfonso XII, died of phthisis, otherwise known as tuberculosis. Alphonso XII's biological paternity is uncertain, though his legal paternity is not: his mother was married to her homosexual cousin Maria Fernando Francisco de Asis, eldest son of the duke of Cadiz, at the time of Alfonso's conception and birth. Alfonso's biological father is said to have been Enrique Puig y Moltó, a captain of the guard. When Queen Isabella and her husband were forced to leave Spain by the revolution of 1868, Alfonso XII accompanied them to Paris, and from there he was sent to the Theresianum at Vienna to continue his studies. On June 25, 1870 he was recalled to Paris, where his mother abdicated in his favour, in the presence of a number of Spanish nobles who had followed the fortunes of th

Yearbook of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.) Angus Athletic Association (C.P.R.A.A.A.A.) 1912

Montreal, Quebec: The Canadian Pacific Railway. Hardcover. Approximately 268 pages. In 1904 the C.P.R. built its vast Angus Shops machine works at Montreal. In its prime, Angus Shops was North America's largest industrial complex, aside from the Baldwin Locomotive Shops of Philadelphia. In 1908 this facility was hit with a six month strike. The Angus Athletic Association was formed the next year, presumably to ease tensions. First 50 pages comprise the yearbook proper, providing a thorough overview of the Association with excellent photos of its many sports teams. The following 108 pages are made up of alternating pages of portraits of VIPs and wonderful contemporary advertisements by companies doing business with the C.P.R. The remaining 110 pages consist primarily of more advertisements interspersed with some lovely portraits of Canadian geographical features and buildings of note, such as the Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. The black boards are adorned with gilt lettering front and back. In fact, the back board is devoted to a C.P.R. advertisement entitled "Get Your Canadian Home From The Canadian Pacific", the text of which explains how the railway is offering agricultural lands along its lines from Manitoba through British Columbia, as well as 'town lots in all growing towns.' The wonderful advertisements in the book are too many to list but highlights include: an illustrated full-page by J.L. Skene Co. Contractors who proudly display a portrait of their recently completed Empress Hotel; a full page illustrated by the Calgary Brewing & Malting Col, Ltd.; a full-page by The Canadian Bridge Company with features a breath-taking black and white photograph of the magnificent Belly River Bridge under construction (this bridge is better known as either the Lethbridge Viaduct or the High Level Bridge at Lethbridge). Average wear. Short openings at front hinge, moreso at back hinge. Inkstamp of the W.A. Jameson Coffee Co. of Victoria, B.C., dated 1912, atop front free endpaper. Prior owner's name in tiny ink letters upon title page. No other markings. Pleasing condition for an item of this vintage. This rare and unique work will appeal to both serious students of C.P.R. history and those interested in the profusion of excellent contemporary advertisements from firms across the land. . Good. 1912. First Edition.
