        In Unknown Africa.

London: Hurst and Blackett, Limited,, 1904. A Narrative of Twenty Months Travel and Sport in Unknown Lands and among New Tribes. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles and vignettes to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt. 2 colour plates of giraffes, approximately 200 half-tone photographs to the text, many full-page, 2 folding maps. Foxing to edges and prelims, maps spotted and offset, the very occasional spot to text. A very good copy. First edition, scarce variant binding, other copies noted in blue cloth with the front cover lettered and decorated in black rather than gilt. Following a successful hunting trip in Abyssinia, Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) travelled to British East Africa in 1902 in order to find a specimen of a five-horned giraffe recently discovered by Sir Harry Johnston. He pursued impala, rhinoceros and lion on the Athi River, crossed the Tana and lived among the Kikuyu, successfully hunting elephant, then collecting trophy kudu and lion on the Baringo plain. He eventually found a five-horned giraffe on the outskirts of Masai territory. Reviewing the work in the Geographical Journal, Harry Johnston praised its descriptions and photographs of big game as well noting that "from a geographical point of view also Major Powell-Cotton's journey is a remarkable one. He covered a little new ground north of the explorations made by Macdonald and Austin, and south and west of the journeys of Wellby and Donaldson-Smith".

      - DENSLOW,W.W. ORIGINAL ART: THE CORN DODGER FROM "THE PEARL AND THE PUMPKIN". Offered here is the original pen and ink drawing by Denslow that appears as a chapter heading for Chapter 6 of The Pearl and the Pumpkin by Paul West, published in 1904 by Dillingham. The original is done on art paper measuring 9 1/4" wide x 12" high and is nicely framed to 14 x 16 1/2". There are pencilled production notes in margins and the piece is in Fine condition, signed by Denslow including his characteristic sea-horse. The image is the Corn Dodger, a humanized ear of corn that is wearing a crown and holding a strand of corn silk in his hand. It is much larger than it appears in the book and is a wonderful, fanciful image. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Initials and Miniatures of the IXth, Xth, and XIth Centuries from Mozarabic Manuscripts of of Santo Domingo de Silos in the British Museum

New York: [Printed by the De Vinne Press], 1904. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. One of 350 copies, unnumbered. Presentation copy, inscribed in 1923 by the author. Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall. Archer M[ilton] Huntington (1870-1955) was a lifelong friend of the arts and philanthropist; known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies, he founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City; his cousin, Henry E. Huntington, founded the renowned Huntington Library in California. This volume was presented by the author in 1923 to Elijah Clarence Hills (1867-1932), a Professor in Florida and Colorado and a prolific author of Spanish-related books. The inscription is on Mr. Huntington's calling card, with "Mr." being crossed out, as follows: "To my friend E.C. Hills / with the high regard & / admiration of (printed name, Archer Huntington) / 1923".The calling card is tipped onto the front pastedown directly beneath Mr. Hills' elegant bookplate. This work was published to preserve the illuminated decorations and initials from the 9th through 11th centuries from manuscripts in the monastery of Silos, near Castile, which over many centuries and the ravages of many wars were at risk of being forever lost. As Mr. Huntington says in the Introduction:"The rarity alone of documents dating, as these do, from the ninth to the eleventh century renders them of the greatest interest; but where, in addition, such remarkable palaeographical and archaeological details are found, and such peculiarity in the application of design to the decoration of books, they become worthy of extended study and fit subjects for reproduction".***DESCRIPTION: Bound in tan cloth with the front board richly decorated as an illuminated manuscript in rust and green, letters outlined in black, green lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, plain endpapers, bookplate and author's inscription tipped onto front pastedown as referred to above, title page with two decorative initial capitals, volume opens with a four-page Introduction by Mr. Huntington, followed by a 3-page list of the Manuscripts used, followed by the illustrations which are printed on the recto only of each page with their number on the opposite page, printed on verso only, two tissue guards (we presume original with the rest having been lost); Elephant Folio in size (approximately 17" tall), unpaginated with approximately 100 leaves; limited edition of 350 copies, unnumbered, author's inscription as set forth above.***CONDITION: Overall very good plus, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the prior owner bookplate and authorial inscription, it is entirely free of prior owner markings. There is some old dampstaining and soiling to the boards, we had a professional restorer do some minor restoration to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, which are all now sturdy (name available upon request).***POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy volume, therefore additional postage will apply. We are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Zemskaia kampaniia i plan "Iskry" [The zemstvo campaign and the plan of "Iskra"].

Geneva, Izdatel'stvo sotsial'demokraticheskoi partiinoi literatury v. Bonch-Bruevicha i N. lenina; Kooperativnaia tipografiia, 1904. - Small 8vo. 26, (2) pp. Original staple-stitched self-wrappers. Printed on thin onion-skin paper. First and only edition of Lenin's witty denunciation of the so-called "zemstvo campaign" advanced by the Geneva-based Menshevik journal "Iskra" ("The Spark"). In a letter dated November 1904, the editors presented a plan for influencing the non-revolutionary "bourgeois opposition" in Russia by disseminating the demands of the Social Democrats through local zemstvos and discussion among the intelligentsia: thus, they hoped to stimulate liberal politicians to vote according to social-democratic views. In response, Lenin fiercely ridiculed the Mensheviks' ignorance of the disadvantages of liberal democracy, as well as the impracticality of tasking local zemstvos with influencing politicians. - Front wrapper bears the printed note "Only for party members"; this, as is revealed on p. 26, is a pun on the fact that Iskra's zemstvo plan, which was meant to be democratically disseminated across Russia, was issued with a similar conspiratorial disclaimer, a fact which Lenin found ridiculous. - Item 747 in the Bernstein and Souvarine catalog, which notes that the pamphlet was distributed illegally among local party offices in Russia and "played an important role in building up the Bolshevik iron discipline" and in convincing the Socialists that "pressure must be applied to the government, not liberals" (p. 126). - Light wear and spotting; corners somewhat creased; tiny nick to front wrapper.       Paris: Charles Meunier, 1904. Fregi e titoli in oro sui dorsi. Testo inquadrato in cornice dorata. Custodia editoriale. Edizione di notevole eleganza. (Monod, 7367; 7420). [M237] Opere pubblicate editorialmente insieme in unico contenitore.

Maitland: T. Dimmock, 1904. Wrappers a little faded; thin spine neatly renewed.. Small octavo, original dark wrappers, preserved in a bookform box. Fick (1886-1939), Sohn des Physiologen Adolf Eugen Fick (1829-1901)."On the basis of subsequent studies, Rudolf A.Fick (1886-1939) concluded that the theory of "Normalstellung" was not entirely valid, as the recumbent position of a cadaver could not be transfered to the vertical stance. The degree of limbar lordosis is much less when the body is recumbent than when vertical in the later position the center of gravity shifts forward considerably more than Braune and Fischer assumed. Fick contended that no one posture is common for people of all races and cultures. Modern anthropological investigations have confirmed his opinion." ct.       Imprimerie Hardy & Bernard. broché. Bel exemplaire.

Golike i Vilborg Skt. Peterburg -1910 1904 - Three volumes folio, the third volume with 5 parts (33.5 x 22.5 cm). Title, [4], frontispiece, [2], 384, [4] pp, incl. 2 full page illustrations; Title, [2], frontispiece, [2], 362, [4], VIII pp, incl. 6 full page illustrations; [2], title, frontispiece, III, 589, II, [4] pp, title, [2], frontispiece, [2], 158, XXXV pp., incl. 5 full page illustrations, with multiple illustrations in text. Full tan calf, two morocco labels with gilt lettering to spines; a bit rubbed, with some scratches. Fresh example of one of the finest literary publications produced in the Russian Empire. Rare, from the limited edition of 500 copies distributed only among subscribers. The present copy is number 89. It includes the last part, part 5 of volume III, not present in Smirnov-Sokolskiy's library nor, strangely enough, in Muratova's listing. Friends of Gorbunov launched this lavish production to celebrate the author, and passed the profit from the sales onto his family. It became, thanks to the scholarly work put in it and the long list of works included, the best edition of Gorbunov's writings as well as an important source on the Russian theatre of the 19th century. It was also an impressive production, in a large format with high quality paper and fine plates, which led the Russian writer Vladimir Lidin to claim it to be one of the most luxurious editions ever printed in Russia ("Druziya moi - Knigi", 1962). Gorbunov (1831-95) was a talented actor, playwright and novelist. He became well known for his short stories depicting episodes from folk life, which were published in such periodicals as Iskra, Sovremennik, Russkiy Vestnik among others. In all his literary works he skilfully combined a deep knowledge of the common person's life and traditions, with an ability to see them from a humorous perspective. Muratova 5502; Smirnov-Sok. 2475; not in Kilgour, Gubar and Markov. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Wiesbaden, 29.
