AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, TO "SIR WILLIAM."

London. 17 February 1904.. Two pages, on recto and verso of half-sheet of octavo letterhead. A few minor smudges and a couple of marginal rustmarks, very good. To: "Dear Sir William [Henry Porter?] Could you possibly get away early from that Finsbury meeting & give us a turn on your way home? Finsbury, I submit, can jolly well take care of itself, whereas South St. Pancras can only be snatched by a mighty effort from its natural propensity to detach itself from Progressive St. P and unite with Holborn. Vote for Shaw and Anti- Vaccination does not attract the Grays Inn & University College medical spheres of influence ... I press you thus with remorse but I promised [Sir William] Geary, my colleague, to do my best top get you; and I want you on my own account too. Yrs ever G. Bernard Shaw. P.S. I am sending you a copy of my 'Common Sense of Municipal Trading,' which will, I hope, help the cause generally in this election." Shaw and Geary stood as Progressives for the 1904 election, but were defeated.

London: D.C.Heath & Company. Heath's Modern Language Series-Eedition of this school text version of Mörike's classic novella. A very good copy in publisher's stamped brown cloth. This copy a gift from Ludwig Wittgenstein to his student, disciple and eventual literary co-executor, Rush Rhees, inscribed in pencil in Wittgenstein's hand, "Wittgenstein to Rhees." . London, D.C.Heath & Company, (1904). 8°. X, 125, (2) pages. Original cloth. Heath's Modern Language Series-Eedition of this school text version of Mörike's classic novella. A very good copy in publisher's stamped brown cloth. This copy a gift from Ludwig Wittgenstein to his student, disciple and eventual literary co-executor, Rush Rhees, inscribed in pencil in Wittgenstein's hand, "Wittgenstein to Rhees." Mörike meant a lot to Wittgenstein and at more than one occasion Wittgenstein tried to persuade contemporaries to read Mörike. (Wittgenstein had a copy of Mörike sent to him at the front as an "antidote" to modern poetry - see P.Engelmann - Letters from L. Wittgenstein with a Memoir - Oxford, 1967) / He speaks highly about Mörike in a letter to Bertrand Russell (January 1914 from Skjolden) and it does not surprise that he would have forwarded this edition of Mörikes Novella to Rush Rhees. An excellent association. ______________ Rush Rhees (19 March 1905 ?- 22 May 1989) was a philosopher. He is principally known as a student, friend, and literary executor of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. With G. E. M. Anscombe, he edited Wittgenstein's posthumous Philosophical Investigations (1953), a highly influential work. He was also responsible for bringing out other unpublished writings by Wittgenstein, including Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics, Philosophische Bemerkungen, Philosophical Remarks, and Philosophical Grammar. Rush Rhees taught at Swansea University from 1940 to 1966. (Wikipedia)

First American Edition of Conrad's well-known novel involving a South American silver mine, and the corruption and dishonesty fostered by its riches.~Conrad was extending his "Lord Jim" theme: that the man who slowly grows rich can be a victim of the silver, not its conqueror; that wealth is not something gained but a trap for those who relinquish, however momentarily, their sense of themselves... No further editions were printed until this stated "Fourth Edition" of 1904. Presumably this fourth edition was called for by the public interest in Tibet around the time of the British military invasion of Tibet in 1904, led by Colonel Younghusband. The fourth edition is abridged, with fewer illustrations and only 1 map. It has a new 1 page preface by the author. "The alterations I have made are merely verbal; and with the exception of the omission, for the sake of brevity, of two chapters on Chitral and Hunza, which did not deal with travel pure and simple, I venture to send out my book yet again in its original form, hoping that there may still be some who may find in reading it the same enjoyment which the writing and revising of it has afforded me." - from the author's preface, dated Hyantse, Tibet, May 30, 1904. ; 8vo .

Photo Postcard of Miss Ethel Levey in 'Little Jonny Jones'

New York, 1904. Very Good. Original Photo Postcard of Miss Ethel Levey in George M. Cohan?'s musical "Little Jonny Jones." LEVEY, Ethel. Photo postcard, circa 1904, measures 3 inches x 6 inches. Black and white photograph captioned ?"Miss Ethel Levey in ?'Little Jonny Jones.?'?" Lightly aged with lower right corner torn but present, otherwise Very Good Condition. Ethel Levey (1881-1955) was a vivacious eighteen year old singer and actress from San Francisco when she married the multi-talented George M. Cohan in 1899. The young Jewish girl proved a great asset to the family entertainment business of ?"The Four Cohans?" (mother Helen, father Jerry, son George and daughter Josephine) and was soon starring in plays that George had written especially with her in mind. ?"Little Jonny Jones?" premiered at the Liberty Theatre in New York City on November 7, 1904. The musical comedy was an instantaneous hit for George Cohan who had written the script and songs, played the leading man, and served also as the producer and director. The play has a plot twist that forces the ingénue Goldie Gates (performed by Ethel) to spend some time impersonating a young man. This charming sepia toned postcard features Ethel in a three piece man?'s suit complete with bowtie and monocle. It is hand decorated with a glitter trim outlining the suit and creating sparkling colored ?"buttons?". ?"Little Jonny Jones?" presented the songs I?'m a Yankee Doodle Dandy and Give My Regards to Broadway to the world for the first time. Although Ethel and George, after having one child together, divorced in 1907 she continued to have a stage career and performed in films until the early 1940s. A rare rascal of musical theatre history.

        A Chinese Manual

London: Crosby Lockwood and Son,, 1904. Comprising a Condensed Grammar with Idiomatic Phrases and Dialogues. Small octavo. Original dark brown finely pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to the spine, blind panel to the front board. Slightly rubbed and sunned, just through at the corners, and head of spine, front joint just started at the tail, light browning, but overall very good. New Edition, first published in 1898. Originally produced in the wake of the annexation of Burma, which "has, by establishing a new point of contact with China, created a necessity for more widely extended knowledge of Chinese among our civilians and soldiers than at present exists" (original Preface), the present edition was issued during the Russo-Japanese War which had further "forced on the attention of the people of Great Britain the advantages of cultivating a closer connexion than formerly with the 400,000,000 people who speak the Chinese language" (Preface to the New Edition). The author was the first Keeper of the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts in the British Museum, and Professor of Chinese at Kings College London. In 1858, following matriculation from King's College, London, Douglas had "entered the diplomatic service and was posted as a student interpreter to Hong Kong. Barely another year had passed when he was moved to Canton which had been under the control of allied forces since its capture in December 1857. It was here that he acquired the greater part of his knowledge of Chinese life and of the southern dialects. In March 1861, he was transferred to Peking as Third Assistant in the Consular Service. In June 1862, Douglas became First Assistant in the Consulate at Tientsin and worked under General Staveley, who commanded the British Occupation Force there. In October of the same year, he was appointed Vice-Consul at Taku. Here he remained until 1864 when he returned home on leave, never, in fact, to go back to China" (Brown, "Sir Robert Kennaway Douglas and his contemporaries", in British Library Journal, 1998). He joined the BM in 1865 and remained there until his retirement in 1907. His catalogues of the Japanese and Chinese collections may have been criticised by Herbert Giles, sometime professor of Chinese at Cambridge, as "a monument of immature scholarship", but "until the publication in 1993 of Kenneth Gardner's Descriptive Catalogue of Japanese Books … Douglas's catalogue was the only guide to the British Library's antiquarian Japanese collection. Its Chinese counterpart, however, has not yet been superseded in print to this day". Attractive crested bookplate of Harry C.C. Nisbet to the front free endpaper.

The History of The Standard Oil Company - Two Volume Set

New York McClure, Phillips & Co. 1904. Volume One: 406 pages. Volume Two: 409 pages including index. "This work is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the editors of McClure's Magazine to deal concretely in their pages with the trust question. In order that their readers might have a clear and succinct notion of the processes by which a particular industry passes from the control of the many to that of the few, they decided a few years ago to publish a detailed narrative of the history of the growth of a particular trust. The Standard Oil Trust was chosen for obvious reasons. It was the first in the field, and it has furnished the methods, the charter, and the traditions for its followers. It is the most perfectly developed trust in existence; that is, it satisfies most nearly the trust ideal of entire control of the commodity in which it deals. Its vast profits have led its officers into various allied interests, such as railroads, shipping, gas, copper, iron, steel, as well as into banks and trust companies, and to the acquiring and solidifying of these interests it has applied the methods used in building up the Oil Trust. It has led in the struggle against legislation directed against combinations. Its power in state and Federal government, in the press, in the college, in the pulpit, is generally recognised. The perfection of the organisation of the Standard, the ability and daring with which it has carried out its projects, make it the pre-eminent trust of the world - the one whose story is best suited to illuminate the subject of combinations of capital... The officers of the company courteously offered to give me all the assistance in their power, an offer of which I have freely taken advantage. In accepting assistance from the Standard men as from independents I distinctly stated that I wanted facts, and that I reserved the right to use them according to my own judgement of their meaning, that my object was to learn more perfectly what was actually done - not to learn what my informants thought of what had been done. It is perhaps not too much to say that there is not a single important episode in the history of the Standard Oil Company, so far as I know it, or a notable step in the growth, which I have not discussed more or less fully with officers of the company." - from Preface. Each volume with tissue protected frontis image of J.D. Rockefeller plus numerous black and white portraits, pictures and diagrams. Top edges gilt. Clearly legible gilt lettering upon spines. Decorative title embossed upon red front board of each volume. Moderate to average wear overall. Modicum of library markings to each volume else unmarked. Crack along front hinge of Volume One. Nice copy of this most significant work. First Edition Hardcover 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall Former Library Copy; First Edition. Good
