        STORIES OF RED HANRAHAN

Dundrum: The Dun Emer Press, 1904.. Linen-backed boards, paper spine and cover labels. Spine label chipped, boards somewhat soiled, endsheets darkened, else a good, sound copy, in folding cloth slipcase, morocco label. First edition. One of five hundred copies printed. Inscribed by Lady Gregory on the front free endsheet to Augustus John, a frequent visitor to Coole: "A. E. John from A. Gregory." In spite of the date on the title-page, official publication did not occur until 16 May 1905. Yeats inscribed John Quinn's copy: "Red Hanrahan is an imaginary name - I saw it over a shop, or rather part of it over a shop in Galway village - but there were many poets like him in the eighteenth century in Ireland. I wrote these stories first in literary English but I could not get any sense of the village life with the words. Now, however, Lady Gregory has helped me, & I think the stories have the emotion of folklore. They are but half mine now, & often her beautiful idiom is the better half". WADE 59. MILLER 4.

Reasearch progressed so rapidly in this erea that the second edition, published only a year later, had to be enlarged by fifity percent. The book includes a discussion of Rutherford's revolutionary transformation theory, developed during the period 1902-1903, which states that radioactivity is a by-product of the transmutation of one element into another."         Joan of Arc

Birmingham, England, 1904. Watercolor on paper, signed "Leslie Brockhurst, aged 14 years". 1 vols. 12-1/2 x 7-1/4 in. Framed. Near fine. Painted by Gerald L. Brockhurst at Age 14 This remarkable watercolor was done by Brockhurst while studying at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art. Notes Wildman: "At the turn of the century, the so-called Birmingham Group, mostly staff and students of the School, had achieved international prowess ... Brockhurst and his contemporaries were students during this golden age [and] benefited from the strengths of the School's teaching, especially those of draughtsmanship and design." Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) was born in Birmingham, England, where he displayed a precocious talent for drawing. In London he was a prize-winning pupil at the Royal Academy Schools, and began etching in 1914. The following year he and his wife Anais moved to Ireland where for five years, under the patronage of Oliver St. John Gogarty, he made numerous paintings and drawings of Irish people and scenes. In 1920 he had returned to London and began a twenty-year career as an etcher - producing over 80 prints - and portrait painter of such distinction that he was able to command £1,000 a canvas, undertaking a maximun of 20 commissions a year. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1937. Around 1929 he met Kathleen Woodward, a sixteen-year old model, whom he rechristened Dorette, and who became the subject of some of his most important works. Their relationship developed rapidly, and led to a protracted, sensationalized divorce case which led to his and Dorette's departure to America in 1940, where they were later married. During the final thirty years of his life Brockhurst pursued a successful career as a portrait painter ($10,000 for a full-length study) dying after a long illness at his home in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.

The Gentle Art of Resenting Injuries

New York: Privately Printed and Copyrighted by Fredercik Keppel, Printed at the De Vinne Press, 1904. First and only edition. Original haddmade fecked beige card wrappers with red-orange lettering and parody Whilstler emblems on cover. 16pp. Printed on thin china paper in same red-orange ink with facsimilies of letters by Whistler in what is now a famous, if not scandalous exchange of animosity. Keppel, (1845-1912) was an American publisher and print dealer who was a prominent patron of Whistler and extensively bought and sold his work. In 1892 Beatrix Whistler described Keppel as an 'old friend' who had been buying a large amount of Whistler's work and selling at large profits. However, the facts showed that many of his very rare and valuable proofs were selling for almost nothing. Whistler was further informed that Keppel had gone 'behind his back' and visited Whistler's brother-in-law on business. Further tensions magnified over subsequent years, and, after Whistler's death, Keppel published this venomous pamphlet containing copies of their correspondence. The two never reconciled and to date, the whole affair stands as somewhat of a fanciful ruse, but in fact it, it had a rather serious life of its own, culminating in this rare and indeed peculiar publication. A fine copy, with the somewhat hilarious tab inserted (as issued) which says, "See Note at back of title-page," evidently for attention deficit readers.

NEVADA: THE BANNER GOLD COUNTY OF CALIFORNIA (COVER TITLE). NEVADA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. THE MOST PROSPEROUS MINING COUNTY OF THE UNITED STATES. WHERE GOOD MINES ARE FOUND IN A COUNTRY WITH A PERFECT CLIMATE AND ALL THE COMFORTS OF CIVILIZATION

Daily Miner Transcript Print, n. d. (ca 1904)]., 1904. 6 7/8" x 5 1/4" gold gilt embossed purple wrappers, n. p. (36 pp.), illustrated, map. Numerous black and white photographic illustrations of the county, its town, buildings, and mines, plus a double-page map of Nevada County. A handsome little booklet promoting Nevada County, California, with illustrations of the major towns, buildings, and mines of the region. This booklet was reviewed in the San Francisco Call, October 3, 1904. The region continued to produce millions of dollars in gold even in the early 20th century, more than 50 years after discovery of gold in California, but on an industrial scale, not that of the individual placer miner. Several views of the area's major mines operating at the turn of the 20th century, plus a view of the Electric Hoisting Works of Grass Valley. There is also a list of members of the Executive Committee of Nevada County Promotion Committee. A tiny stain (looks like a tiny spot of coffee) in the margin of the last page which diminishes to nothing 8 pages later, on page 11 is a stamped address of a real estate agent that is contained mostly in the margin, and portions of the covers lightly faded, else a very good, internally clean copy.

        Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

London: Edward Arnold, 1904. First edition. With four illustrations by James McBryde. 270, [16, ads, dated November 1904] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original beige linen, stamped in black and red, yapp fore-edges. Spine and edges a trifle darkened and soiled, upper hinge cracked., early gift inscription on title page. Very good, in custom black, morocco-backed clamshell case. The first work of fiction by the distinguished scholar, educator, administrator and antiquarian who was one of the greatest ghost-story writers of all time. Had he not written in the genre, Rhodes, born in 1862, would have been remembered as a writer and expert on apocryphal literature and medieval manuscripts, as director of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, a noteworthy administrator of King's College, and Provost of Eton until his death in 1936. Instead, we know him as a masterful narrator who 'surpassed most writers of ghost stories in the eeriness of his atmosphere, the individual and peculiarly creepy quality of his plots, and the vindictiveness and maligancy of his ghosts..." (Kunitz & Haycraft, Twentieth Century Authors). Among the eight extremely creepy stories in this volume is the frequently anthologized tale, "The Mezzotint"

Original parchment-backed boards, printed paper label, minor foxing to upper quarter of front cover, else a fine copy. In open-faced paper case. A splendid work of unsurpassed, almost lyrical, prose and superb photogravures - and of predictable rarity. The photochrome process was invented in Switzerland, and the American rights were purchased by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1895. Jackson served as a director of the newly-created Photochrom Company subsidiary, and praised the photochrome process in his memoirs as a "process hardly improved today." The black and white photographs are by members of the party. An outstanding sporting and Western rarity, with a highly desirable provenance.
