        The Simple Life

Piedmont, California, 1904. Cloth. Very Good. Oblong, 20 by 27 cm. 14 pp. of ink and watercolor drawings of amusing, preposterous cartoon scenes mostly of family life in a decidedly upper crust, eccentric California family. The artwork resembles the modern cartoonist Roz Chast, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker. The most striking illustration is a double paged depiction of "Maddie's Birthday Party", which would appear to have been a masquerade party with the guests dressing up as characters mostly from opera and operetta (Tannhauser, The Mikado, Carmen). While the figures in all the drawings have a rough crudity about them, this is also the source of their subversive charm, and the corseted times are upended into something more spontaneous, slapdash and not entirely removed from our more unbuttoned culture. Whether or not the artist was capable of realistic portraiture, she surely knew how to capture movement, and all the drawings convey action and movement very effectively. We may not be privy to the inside jokes at the bottom of the drawings, but it really doesn't matter, as the color, joy and dynamism of the cartoons come together to pull us in. On the cover is written The Century Co., New York, but surely this was the author/artist having a bit of fun, for this is an unpublished manuscript. The title page in facts states a location of Piedmont, which is in the East Bay of San Francisco. The surname of the artist is unknown. Soiling to the cloth cover.

        The Issues At Stake

The Liberal Publications Department (in connection with the National Liberal Federation and the Liberal Central Association), London 1904 - This exceptionally rare pamphlet publishes Winston Churchill's speech of 13 May 1904 at Free Trade Hall, Manchester. Churchill spoke about free trade - a policy issue on which he opposed his party leadership and which helped precipitate Churchill's decision to leave the Tory Party of his father. Only two weeks after this speech, on 31 May 1904, Churchill would formally "cross the aisle", turning his back on the Conservative Party and joining the Liberals. In so doing, Churchill began a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. Churchill's speech of 13 May followed that of Liberal M.P. John Morley (1838-1923), a friend and mentor who "seems to have exercised a peculiar fascination upon Churchill" at this time. In 1901, Churchill is reported to have said: "If I were a Liberal I should be with John Morley." (Gilbert, Volume II, page 30) It was Morley who significantly influenced Churchill's sympathies for the poor, helping build the intellectual and empathetic foundations for Churchill's period as an ardent social reformer. In 1901, Morley recommended to Churchill Seebohm Rowntree's classic study of the poor of the city of York, which Churchill promptly read. Churchill was affected enough to widely cite and proselytize the book: "I call a terrible and shocking thing, people who have only the workhouse or prison as the only avenues to change from their present situation." (9 January 1902 at Blackpool, Gilbert, Volume II, page 30) After Churchill had crossed the floor and joined the Liberal party he continued his close friendship with Morley which faded from political view only in 1914 when Morley - a pacifist - resigned from the Government. This pamphlet is 20 pages in length, string-bound in paper wrappers, and measures 7 15/16 x 5 3/8 inches. Churchill's contribution appears at pages 17-20. The small number of original Churchill speech pamphlets available to collectors from the Pre-WWI decade beginning in 1904 frequently owe their survival to the fact that they were bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (Volume II, p.1499), the number "10" hand stamped on the upper right corner of this pamphlet indicates that this pamphlet was disbound from the collected "Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1904". Aside from a slightly rough left edge, the pamphlet is in superlative condition - crisp and bright with no spotting and no wear and the string binding intact. The pamphlet is protected by a burgundy hard case stamped in gilt on the front cover that completely enfolds the pamphlet within. The case is in excellent condition as well, with just slight scuffing to the covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D8, Woods D(b)25 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Japan, Meji 36 (1904). 3 volumes. 4to (315 x 225mm). With 75 colour woodblock prints, 9 prints on double page. In original stitched bindings (preserved in a recent Japanese style cloth box). The present work is one of the most attractive Japanse flower books, printed in lovely delicate colours, and of a high artistic level. The work is rare and Kerlen only quotes the first volume of the 1893 edition. The 1904 and 1893 editions are identical. A fine copy.//Kerlen 814.

        The History of Portrait Miniatures

London - George Bell Sons 1904 - Two volumes bound in white cloth with gilt decoration to the front boards and titles, original early twentieth century dustwrappers. Illustrated with 107 plates. Collated complete. Very very scarce in dustwrapper. A scarce limited edition inexcellent condition. This Edition consists of 520 Copies, of which 510 are for sale. It will not be reprinted. These two volumes contain a history of portrait miniatures from the period 1531 - 1860. Williamson compiled a comprehensive account of the art of miniature portrait painting as exhibited in the great collections of England and the Continent. The illustrations are taken from collections in all parts of the world and represent almost every important miniature painter by some characteristic example of his work. Each miniature was specially photographed for this book and reproduced in its actual size. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including mild bumping to the corners and a few handling marks to the boards. The dustwrappers have some discoloration to the spines and some large chips and tears with a section missing form the spine panel on Volume II and loss to the bottom of the rear panel on Volume I. The rear fold of Volume II is split most of the way down. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright only with the occasional handling mark. There are neatink inscriptions to the front blank endpapers of each volume. Overall the volumes are in near fine condition with the dustwrappers in good only condition but an extraordinarily rare survival. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Heart of a Continent: A Narrative of Travels in Manchuria, Across the Gobi Desert, Through the Pamirs, and Hunza 1884-1894

John Murray, London 1904 - A clean copy. Binding tight. Tissue guard to frontis present and unfoxed. Minor wear and bruising to cloth at tail of spine. No signatures or stamps. Light age toning to page edges and margins of leaves. 1/8" chips to cloth at lower corners of boards. ; xvii, [1], 332 pages + photogravure portrait frontis + 8 plates + colour folding map at rear. Brown cloth covers with colour illustration incoporating oriental art motifs on front board. Top page edges gilt. Gilt title on spine. Dimensions: 9" by 5 1/2". This work was first published in 1896. The book ran through 3 editions in 1896. The third edition of May 1896 was reprinted in August of 1896 and again in January of 1897. No further editions were printed until this stated "Fourth Edition" of 1904. Presumably this fourth edition was called for by the public interest in Tibet around the time of the British military invasion of Tibet in 1904, led by Colonel Younghusband. The fourth edition is abridged, with fewer illustrations and only 1 map. It has a new 1 page preface by the author. "The alterations I have made are merely verbal; and with the exception of the omission, for the sake of brevity, of two chapters on Chitral and Hunza, which did not deal with travel pure and simple, I venture to send out my book yet again in its original form, hoping that there may still be some who may find in reading it the same enjoyment which the writing and revising of it has afforded me." - from the author's preface, dated Hyantse, Tibet, May 30, 1904. ; 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]
