Autograph Letter Signed "A. Lyttelton" to "My Dear Sir" Regarding the Alaska Boundary Dispute].

1904 - 21 January 1904. Small Octavo (ca. 18x11,5 cm). 3 pp. Brown ink on watermarked paper with blind stamped "Colonial Office" letterhead; marked "Confidential" in ink in the upper left corner. Mild fold marks, otherwise a very good letter. A confidential private letter by Alfred Lyttleton, British Colonial Secretary in 1903-05, regarding the communications with Canadian officials about the Alaska Boundary Dispute. The letter was most likely addressed to Richard Everard Webster, first Viscount Alverstone (1842-1915), Chief Justice of Great Britain, one of three commissioners on the Alaska boundary dispute - as president of the commission he voted against the Canadian claim. "I shd be very glad to see your reply to Sir W. Laurier. It is interesting to find that in a memo of [Joseph Hodges] Choate in 1902 Laurier is described as in a most timorous and conciliatory attitude They did not report me at the Canada [?] in full, but I cd not refrain from saying something about you, & the Canadians received it very well, though it was not violently abusive of you."

        The Napoleon of Notting Hill

London: The Bodley Head,, 1904. With seven full-page illustrations by W. Graham Robertson and a Map of the Seat of War. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in black, vignettes blocked in red and black to spine and front board, top edge grey, others untrimmed. Frontispiece and 7 plates. Bookplate of Brian Fenwick Smith to front free endpaper. Spine rolled, cloth a little soiled, internally fine; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, of the author's first novel, signed by him on the verso of the frontispiece. The book is a fantasy set in an alternative version of London, which the randomly selected king decides on a whim to divide into separate boroughs, each with their own customs and at war against each other, on the model of city states in Renaissance Italy. "Maisie Ward has said [of the novel's two protagonists, King Auberon and the provost of Notting Hill] that they 'are the most living individuals in any of his novels—just because they are the two lobes of his brain individualized' (Ward, 1958 edn, 127). That is to say, they embody his opposed sides of profound gravity and exuberant fooling, which often united in a pun or an arresting paradox." (ODNB).

Geo. G. Fetter Company, 1904., 1904. First edition. 8vo. Original maroon cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, decorated endpapers, xii [2], 476 pp., frontis. [portrait of Brigadier General Adam R. Johnson], preface, illustrated, plates, portraits. Jenkins' Basic Texas Books 108 says, "This is one of the most interesting first-hand narratives of Texas Indian fighting, stagecoaching, and Confederate cavalry operations. Johnson fought Indians in Texas in the 1850s, was a driver for the Butterfield Overland Stage in Texas, and surveyed a vast amount of virgin territory in West Texas. In the Civil War his famed Texas Partisan Rangers cavalry unit fought under Nathan Bedford Forrest and John Hunt Morgan. Wounded and blinded, he was imprisoned in Fort Warren. After the war, in spite of his blindness, he was so active in pioneering business ventures in West Texas that his home of Marble Falls became known as 'the blind man's town." Graff 2213 says, "The story of a very brave and daring man. His Indian warfare experiences in Texas in the late 1850s, when he was connected with the Butterfield Stage outfit and also when as a surveyor he surveyed much virgin territory, are almost beyond belief. The same or more can be said of his Civil War service in Kentucky as a Partisan Ranger." Original maroon cloth with new spine and original spine laid down on top, cosmetic restoration to corners and inner hinges professionally strengthened, else very good copy. HOWES J122. COULTER 257. (Complete.)

. Paris, [the authors], 1904-1913. Folio. 34 [12 (i); 21] pp., 110 [45; 65] plates with explanatory text leaves. Original printed wrappers.l Very rare complete set in the original wrappers of this famous atlas of Eocene molluscs (and brachiopods) from the Paris Basin. Mainly from Lutetien, Bartonien and Cusien stages, these faunas are known to be extremely rich and well preserved. A few species are introduced here as valid names, in particular on the last plate of volume 1 "supplement". Around 1900, the French palaeontologist and malacologist [Alexandre Edouard] Maurice Cossmann (1850-1924), who never used his first two names, was the leading expert on the Eocene Mollusca. He had an enormous amount of material at his disposal and the quality of the photographed specimens, therefore, is often the best possible. Little is known about Georges [Henri] Pissarro (1871-1839), not to be confused with Camille Pissaro's son Georges, who was born in the same year but died in 1961. Pissarro was responsible for the fine photographs. He is not otherwise known as a malacologist. A smaller, printed leaf, "Avis aux souscripteurs" has been added. A few short tears in the wrapper edges, otherwise a very good, clean set. Cat. BM(NH) Suppl. A-I, p. 235. Not in Nissen ZBI..

        Idylls of the King

1904. A Tennyson Masterpiece In A Masterful Binding by Ramage[RAMAGE, binder]. [TENNYSON, Lord Alfred]. Idylls of the King. London: Macmillan and Co., 1904. Golden Treasury Edition. Small octavo (6 1/16 x 3 3/4 in; 154 x 96 mm). [viii], 421, [1, blank] pp. Bound by Ramage (stamp-signed on lower turn-in) in contemporary full crimson crushed morocco, with gilt-rolled borders enclosing a broad frame of antelope morocco with gilt-ornamented black morocco entrelacs against a background tiny gilt tools, within which is a gilt-bordered crimson field with gilt foliate corner pieces. Raised bands. Spine compartments reiterate the gilt frame. Broad turn-ins with gilt rosettes, dots, and fleurons frame cream moire silk doublures, Cream moire silk free endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate on front blank leaf. Minimal rubbing to corners. A fine example of a Ramage binding.Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century. Though the range designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work.Idylls of the King, published between 1859 and 1885, is a cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809?-1892; Poet Laureate from 1850) which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. The whole work recounts Arthur's attempt and failure to lift up mankind and create a perfect kingdom, from his coming to power to his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred. Individual poems detail the deeds of various knights, including Lancelot, Geraint, Galahad, and Balin and Balan, and also Merlin and the Lady of the Lake. There is little transition between Idylls, but the central figure of Arthur links all the stories. The poems were dedicated to the late Albert, Prince Consort. The Idylls are written in blank verse. Tennyson's descriptions of nature are derived from observations of his own surroundings, collected over the course of many years. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. Idylls of the King is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era.

London. 17 February 1904.. Two pages, on recto and verso of half-sheet of octavo letterhead. A few minor smudges and a couple of marginal rustmarks, very good. To: "Dear Sir William [Henry Porter?] Could you possibly get away early from that Finsbury meeting & give us a turn on your way home? Finsbury, I submit, can jolly well take care of itself, whereas South St. Pancras can only be snatched by a mighty effort from its natural propensity to detach itself from Progressive St. P and unite with Holborn. Vote for Shaw and Anti- Vaccination does not attract the Grays Inn & University College medical spheres of influence ... I press you thus with remorse but I promised [Sir William] Geary, my colleague, to do my best top get you; and I want you on my own account too. Yrs ever G. Bernard Shaw. P.S. I am sending you a copy of my 'Common Sense of Municipal Trading,' which will, I hope, help the cause generally in this election." Shaw and Geary stood as Progressives for the 1904 election, but were defeated.

Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag. [Widmungsexemplar des Philosophen Ludwig Wittgenstein an seinen Schüler Rush Rhees / Presentation - copy from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein to his friend Rush Rhees] Novelle von Eduard Mörike. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by William Guild Howard.

London: D.C.Heath & Company. Heath's Modern Language Series-Eedition of this school text version of Mörike's classic novella. A very good copy in publisher's stamped brown cloth. This copy a gift from Ludwig Wittgenstein to his student, disciple and eventual literary co-executor, Rush Rhees, inscribed in pencil in Wittgenstein's hand, "Wittgenstein to Rhees." . London, D.C.Heath & Company, (1904). 8°. X, 125, (2) pages. Original cloth. Heath's Modern Language Series-Eedition of this school text version of Mörike's classic novella. A very good copy in publisher's stamped brown cloth. This copy a gift from Ludwig Wittgenstein to his student, disciple and eventual literary co-executor, Rush Rhees, inscribed in pencil in Wittgenstein's hand, "Wittgenstein to Rhees." Mörike meant a lot to Wittgenstein and at more than one occasion Wittgenstein tried to persuade contemporaries to read Mörike. (Wittgenstein had a copy of Mörike sent to him at the front as an "antidote" to modern poetry - see P.Engelmann - Letters from L. Wittgenstein with a Memoir - Oxford, 1967) / He speaks highly about Mörike in a letter to Bertrand Russell (January 1914 from Skjolden) and it does not surprise that he would have forwarded this edition of Mörikes Novella to Rush Rhees. An excellent association. ______________ Rush Rhees (19 March 1905 ?- 22 May 1989) was a philosopher. He is principally known as a student, friend, and literary executor of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. With G. E. M. Anscombe, he edited Wittgenstein's posthumous Philosophical Investigations (1953), a highly influential work. He was also responsible for bringing out other unpublished writings by Wittgenstein, including Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics, Philosophische Bemerkungen, Philosophical Remarks, and Philosophical Grammar. Rush Rhees taught at Swansea University from 1940 to 1966. (Wikipedia)

1904. A Tale of the Seaboard. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1904. Original green cloth decorated in orange and black. First American Edition of Conrad's well-known novel involving a South American silver mine, and the corruption and dishonesty fostered by its riches.~Conrad was extending his "Lord Jim" theme: that the man who slowly grows rich can be a victim of the silver, not its conqueror; that wealth is not something gained but a trap for those who relinquish, however momentarily, their sense of themselves... [Karl]~This copy is bright and just about fine (very slight rubbing at the extremities) -- and is rather uncommon thus. Cagle A10b.
