Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium esse ostendit, atque obiter plurima scitu sanequam digna commemorat

London: Methuen, 1904. Modern fine press edition of Francesco Colonna's 1499 Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, originally published in Venice by Aldus Manutius, often considered the most beautiful book of the Italian Renaissance. The convoluted narrative, "the strife of love in a dream," follows Poliphilo in pursuit of his beloved Polia, a quest that forces him through a series of allegorical landscapes and trials, ending only when he awakes. The book's fame rests on its extraordinary woodcuts, precise and dreamlike, which influenced generations of artists. The Hypnerotomachia served as a source book of Renaissance imagery, a detailed architectural record, and a showcase for Aldus's typographic and compositional virtuosity, featuring Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic types, and even hieroglyphics. (The iconic woodcut of the elephant and obelisk made its way to Salvador Dalí by way of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.) This 1904 Methuen edition is a page-for-page facsimile of the 1499 Aldine first edition. Bookbinder Edith Gedye, identified in an accompanying note as a "successor to Cobden Sanderson," produced a series of highly accomplished bindings in the early twentieth century: this binding is dated 1909. A stunning book. Folio, full blue crushed morocco gilt, boards double-ruled with cornerpieces in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles featuring a pattern of inlaid ivory circles, all edges gilt. Facsimile of the 1499 Aldine first edition, including the 172 original woodcuts by an unknown hand, followed by the Methuen colophon. Light scattered foxing, occasional stray scuff to binding, expert repair to base of spine and upper dentelle. Note laid in: "Bound by Miss Gedye / successor to Cobden Sanderson."

The Sword of Song. Called by Christians The Book of The Beast.

Paris: by Philippe Renouard [colophon]; Benares: Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth,, 1904. Quarto. Printed on vellum, unbound as issued, gatherings laid into the original blue wrappers, titles and decoration to wrappers and backstrip in gold, uncut. Printed in red and black. Dusty, the wrappers torn at the spine and generally a little dull. First edition, first printing, one of just three copies printed on vellum for Crowley's own use. A major presentation copy inscribed by Crowley on the initial blank, in a mixture of letters and symbols: "An XIX [the Sun in 8 degrees 15 minutes Libra, the Moon in 0 degrees Cancer, i.e. in Thelemic dating, 2 October 1923] City of Tunis. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law [symbol] I, the Beast 666 [symbols] A?A? give this third vellum copy of The Sword of Song (the other two being in my possession & that of John Quinn) to Edmund Saayman on his 26th birthday and his day of reception as a probationer of A?A? with the Motto of [Hebrew letters] "There the scribe knew the narcissus in his heart" with all good Will for his Attainment of the Summum Bonum True Wisdom & Perfect Happiness." The regular edition exists in two states, one of which has a red paper outer wrapper and was issued in ten copies. But the present example is a completely separate beast - no pun intended. The other two copies are recorded as appearing on the market as early as 1926 when the John Quinn copy sold at the Anderson Galleries. It was rebound in blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf, as was the second of the three copies which languished in a Detroit storage facility until Lunn liberated it and placed it, along with many other Crowley jewels, in the Harry Ransom collection at the University of Texas Austin. We have not traced the Quinn copy but our example is the only one of the three in the original condition. Edmund Saayman, a mathematics scholar, had been recruited to Crowley's cause by Norman Mudd. Both Oxford men, they visited Crowley at Cefalu and followed him to Tunis.

        The Story of a Troll-Hunt

Cambridge: Printed at the University Press,, 1904. Quarto. Original vellum backed grey boards, lettered in black on front cover. Illustrated throughout by James McBryde. Spotting to vellum spine, light rubbing to corners, light off setting to endpapers. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, of a putative edition of 100 copies and decidedly uncommon: Copac lists only three locations in British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, V&A, Cambridge), OCLC adds just five more. "James McBryde was a student and friend of M. R. James (MRJ). He came up to King's[Cambridge] in 1893 to read Natural Sciences. Although McBryde was 10 years younger than MRJ the pair became firm friends. McBryde joined MRJ's bookish circle and was one of the select few who heard MRJ's ghost stories by the light of a candle in a draughty set of rooms at King's. The friendship between the two men outlived McBryde's Cambridge career and between 1899 and 1901 they travelled each year to Denmark and Sweden. These adventures would later inspire two of MRJ's ghost stories ('No. 13' and 'Count Magnus') and McBryde's children's book The Story of the Troll-Hunt. The story told of three Cambridge men who travelled to Jutland to hunt monsters to bring back to the Fitzwilliam Museum - MRJ was the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum from 1893 to 1908. McBryde and his wife Gwendolyn settled in London in 1904 when McBryde enrolled at the Slade School of Art. Shortly after beginning his art studies, MRJ approached him with the idea of illustrating his ghost stories. McBryde, already familiar with the stories, welcomed the opportunity... Sadly... McBryde died a month later of complications following an appendix operation... It has been suggested the McBryde was the love of MRJ's life. MRJ is known to have picked flowers from the Fellows Garden at King's and travelled up with them on the train to McBryde's funeral in Lancashire where he tossed them into his friend's grave. After McBryde's death, MRJ arranged for the publication of The Story of a Troll-Hunt with Cambridge University Press and wrote an introduction for the volume. One of its illustrations is a cartoon of MRJ, James McBryde and William Johnson Stone sitting on a bench on the Backs plotting their adventure. MRJ was named legal guardian of McBryde's daughter Jane who was born six months after her father's death. MRJ, the consummate Victorian bachelor, maintained a lifelong friendship with McBryde's widow Gwendolyn and his daughter Jane. The two women became a surrogate family for him" (King's College, Cambridge online).

New York: Unpublished, 1904 An original watercolor painted on heavy card stock tipped onto a larger piece of matboard. SIGNED "Beatrix Potter" in the artist's distinctive handwriting. A character closely resembling the rabbit Appley Dapply was painted by Potter in 1890 for a series of greeting cards that was never published. In 1904 she created Appley Dapply for a proposed 94 page large format book of rhymes, but the project was set aside when her publisher Frederick Warne died in 1905. In 1917 some of the material from the proposed book was used for a small format book entitled APPLEY DAPPLEY'S NURSERY RHYMES. One sequence of 3 illustrations feature Appley Dappley, and our watercolor obviously would be the first picture in the sequence if it had been used in the book. Provenance: from the collection of the great-granddaughter of Beatrix Potter's American publisher David McKay to whom the artist gave the watercolor. The full signature was probably added at that time--the initials" HBP" can be seen beneath the signature. The watercolor is clean and bright, with some minimal light foxing.. SIGNED. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. Illus. by Beatrix Potter. 3 1/2" by 4 1/2".

1904. Hi, This lot is a 1904 Original Hardback Wisden in good to Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, the things to point out are that the hinges are weak, they are not split nor has the book had any restoration but Wisden forgot the hinge strengtheners. The front board is very bright and clean with excellent gilt. The spine cloth is darkened and hence the gilt is dark too. The rear board is also very good. Internally it is very nice indeed. Excellent photoplate. Other than the hinges it would be a superb book. Please see the large pictures, taken without the flash. More available on request. Buy-it-now.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition of the French translation by Marcel Proust, one of the copies of the first issue numbered press. Binding to bradel half calico indigo, smooth back with a gold floral pattern, double thread tail piece as red shagreen dishes marbled paper covers preserved, contemporary binding. Valuable autograph of the author to his young writer friend Max Daireaux. If he had known the family Daireaux Neuilly it was not until 1908 to return to Buenos Aires Proust became friends with the young Max, thirteen years his junior. They will maintain for several years, a significant primarily literary correspondence. We thus note that the first letter from Proust to this new friend, written in September 1908 as a dedicatory poem is attached to a copy of Pleasures and days. Later Proust support the publication of the writings of his protege in the Figaro and in 1913, its scientists seek when correcting his manuscript Research lights. It will highlight it on this occasion he used in "The Girls" anecdote occurred in Daireaux: "There is (in the second volume) one word beast and it has been said by me in you .         Ghost-Stories of an Antiquary.

London: Edward Arnold,, 1904. With four illustrations by the late James McBryde. Octavo. Original brown buckram, yapp edges, spine and front board lettered in black, boards double ruled in red. Frontispiece with tissue-guard and 3 plates. Edges a little spotted, contents lightly foxed, small patch of abrasion to final numeral of inscription, plates clean. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his ward, the daughter of his close friend and the illustrator of this book, on the front pastedown, "Jane McBryde, on her first Christmas, 190[4]". (The final numeral of the year is erased, perhaps due to a mistake.) The daughter of James McBryde and his wife Gwendolyn, Jane was born six months after the death of her father in June 1904 from complications following an appendix operation; the author was subsequently named her legal guardian. McBryde died leaving the illustrations for this book unfinished, and James's publisher suggested another illustrator for the book. However, James was adamant that McBryde could not be replaced, and Ghost Stories of an Antiquary was published with just the four completed illustrations as a tribute to his friend. The fourth plate in the book (facing p. 222) was one the last illustrations McBryde prepared before his death. He wrote excitedly to James on 6 May 1904, "I have finished the Whistle ghostÂ…I covered yards of paper to put in the moon shadows correctly and it is certainly the best thing I have ever drawn.

THE CRIPPLE CREEK STRIKE, 1903 - 1904

The Victor Daily Record, Victor, Cripple Creek Gold Mining District, Colorado 1904 - Original gold-embossed, green-cloth covers; 248 pages; illustrated from photographs and drawings. One of three variant cloth bindings (green, brown, and denim blue). Copyright applied for, Victor, Colorado. Photograph of Mrs. Emma F. Langdon as a frontispiece; tissue page before it. Foldout drawing of the Standard and Colorado reduction plants in Colorado City, Colorado by D. D. Robertson -- where the Cripple Creek Strike began. An excellent, though biased, account of the labor strike that stifled gold production in the Pikes Peak Region, 1903 - 1904. Emma Langdon was the wife of Charles G. Langdon, linotype operator and one of Victor Daily Record imprisoned in the Goldfield bull pen by the Colorado National Guard. Numerous illustrations of principal personalities involved in this long and bloody strike; also, excellent details on mines, mining companies, railroads, and many of the circumstances that converged to stimulate this action. To get a more rounded perspective of the Cripple Creek Strike of 1903 - 1904, it is recommended that the researcher study Rastall's LABOR HISTORY OF THE CRIPPLE CREEK DISTRICT, 1905 and Wright's LABOR DISTURBANCES IN COLORADO, 1905, among other vital resources. This book is one of the most significant written on Colorado's greatest gold mining district. What's more, it was written by a woman with adamant views of labor unions, capitalism, and the state politics of the time. Langdon should be recognized in a similar vein as Emma Goldman. But Langdon later became disillusioned by the machinations of Big Bill Haywood and tendency to push the Western Federation of Miners towards violence. The first edition, first printing of THE CRIPPLE CREEK STRIKE is unique in that it was published by the Victor Daily Record in Victor, Colorado and focuses strictly on the labor strike in the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District; whereas, the 2nd and 3rd editions of this book extend the perspective to Telluride and other Colorado mining districts. Also, the book was published while the then unknown, and yet to be famous journalist, Lowell Thomas, was working as a newspaper delivery boy at the Victor Record.         Stella Fregelius. A Tale of Three Destinies.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1904 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and within single-fillet frame to front cover in gilt, black surface-paper endpapers. Spine rolled, corners bumped, a few small faint marks to covers, front free endpaper with a minor chip to fore edge and discreet ownership inscription to verso. An excellent, fresh copy. First UK edition, first impression. Presentation copy, with a signed inscription from Haggard to Sir Oliver Lodge on his Ditchingham House letterhead mounted to the front pastedown, bearing the short message, "In recollection a very interesting evening, 1. Feb: 1904", and additionally with the ink-stamp of "F. Brodie Lodge, Floore House" to the initial blank, above a manuscript note reading "Ex Normanton Library, October 1940". Lodge was a noted physicist who made important contributions to the study of electricity and radio waves though became increasingly discredited owing to his stubborn advocacy of the ether theory, and in particular "through its application in his later books to psychical matters and to the spiritualism with which this had become increasingly associated" (ODNB). He eventually became President of the Society for Psychical Research and found a friend in Rider Haggard, who "more than dabbled in spiritualism, believed in reincarnation, and sought answers to the meaning of life in the world's ancient myths" (idem). Francis Brodie Lodge was Oliver's second son and had a successful career as an electrical engineer. Normanton House, near Lake in Wiltshire, was the Lodge family home. Ditchingham was the Norfolk estate of Rider Haggard's wife, Louisa Magritson, and though the couple were married in 1880, it was only with the publication of She in 1887 that the author was able to buy out the tenants and make Ditchingham his home. Stella Fregelius was first published in the US the previous year. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

WORKS OF MR. FRANCIS RABELAIS, Doctor In Physick, Containing Five Books of.Gargantua and Pantagruel, Together with the Pantagrueline Prognostication, the Oracle of the Divine Bacbuc, and response of the bottle; Hereunto are annexed the Navigations unto the Sounding Isle and the Isle of Apdests: as likewise the Philosophical cream with a Limousin Epistle. [Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty]

London Grant Richards 1904 - 2 volumes. First edition of the W. Heath Robinson illustrated Rabelais, the large paper issue of a book published nearly two decades later in the octavo format. A copy with fine provenance, the Litchfield copy with signatures and his armorial bookplates. With 100 full-page black and white illustrations by W. Heath Robinson, with numerous illustrations in the text, title-pages printed in black and red, full-page photogravure plates at the front, pictorial end-papers printed in red. 4to, publisher's full white polished buckram, the covers ruled and decorated in gilt, the spines fully gilt decorated and lettered. xlii, 377; xliv, 350 pp. A fine set, the cloth clean and with very little evidence of age but for some very light mellowing to the spine panels. FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE, AND A PLEASING AND HANDSOME SET OF THIS TIMELESS WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST WRITERS OF ALL TIME. THIS EDITION IS WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY W. HEATH ROBINSON AND IS CONSIDERED A CLASSIC. AN "EXTRAVAGANT EDITION". "For most English readers Rabelais has taken the very form and pressure of his eccentric, full-blooded translator, and doubtless would have smiled upon the joyous excess to which Urquhart, with the aid of Cotgrave's lustily Rabelaisian Deictionary (1611) carried his verbal gymnastics" (OHEL). "One of the most perfect transfusions of an author from one language into another that ever man accomplished. In point of style Urquhart was Rabelais incarnate, and in his enjoyment of the verbal resources, whether of science or pseudo-science or slang, he almost surpassed Rabelais himself" (DNB). The original owner of these volumes, E. Hubert Litchfield was a noted personage. He was author of works relating to travel and adventure and was, quite significantly, a collector of fine and important books and manuscripts. His collection was sold by Sotheby's (Parke-Bernet) in December 1951. These volumes, with Mr. Litchfield's bookplates were sold in that sale. Both his signatures and armorial bookplates are within. The books have been privately owned for many years prior to their offering here. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Leipzig, 29. X. 1904. - 3 SS. 8vo. MGG XII, 489).

Cho senshu [or] Cho senrui [trans.: One Thousand Butterflies].

25 double-page stunning plates of colored woodcuts depicting butterflies. Two vols. in accordion-style (orihon). 8vo, orig. blue silk over boards (a little worn), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover. Kyoto: Yamada Unsodo, 1904. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work on butterflies; the handsome woodblock double-page plates, several of which are heightened in gold or silver, depict butterflies in a variety of styles. "Kamisaka Sekka was a genius; effortlessly, prodigiously, boundlessly imaginative; tirelessly inventive, spontaneous, and free. In One Thousand Butterflies (Cho senrui, 1903 [the book is commonly misdated; it was published in 1904]) he took a single subject and drew dozens of pictures, each in a different style. There was nothing academic about his approach. Each drawing was fresh and new; many were arresting and some mirrored new developments in European art... "Sekka loved design. He began to paint under Suzuki Zuigai when he was sixteen and studied textiles in his early twenties...He was doubly fortunate that Yamada Naosaburo, the most ambitious, original and enterprising publisher of the early twentieth century, recognized Sekka's genius and gave him the freedom and support he needed to bring into the world his protean vision of art fused with life."-Keyes, Ehon. The Artist and the Book in Japan (NYPL), p. 240. ❧ Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, p. 976-"A colour-printed book of elaborate decor based on the forms of butterflies. All the designs are 'patterned,' but some conform to the actual shape and markings of believable butterflies, though there is certainly no intention to be entomologically accurate; but in some, the artist simply used the insects as a theme for variations, distorting and manipulating the butterfly shape until it is barely recognizable, often achieving the kind of art nouveau that we associate with some Secession jewellery...Sekka is especially inventive when he allows swarms of butterflies to float over the page, achieving colourful geometric diagrams, or, in one, amorphous silver shapes outlined in brown, green and yellow, as evocative and irrational as abstracts by Arp." .
