Arthur Conan Doyle
4) The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. First Edition, first printing published in 1902 by George Newnes, London 1902. 359pp + 16 B&W Illustrations by Sidney Paget. The striking boards were designed by Alfred Garth Jones, Scarlet red cloth with beautiful gilt stamped nouveau designs, tantalising ? Question marks and titles. A black vignette silhouette of the Hound to the central compartment and heavily gilted spine. The boards have some soiling but have retained very good colour, the gilt stamping is still reasonably bright, the spine has dulled uniformly but again the gilt-stamping is bright with only minor rubbing to the head and foot of the spine and a few tiny nicks. Eps are foxed with previous owners inscription to fpd, the contents page is a little rough around the edges otherwise the contents are pretty clean and tightly bound. All plates have been collated. With the Green and Gibson ‘You for Yours’ on p13 (Find a copy without it !) A very desirable book for obvious reasons, it’s beautiful. There are always copies on the market but they are often very tatty or missing plates which seems to be a very common problem. Direct contact is recommended from potential customers, more scans available upon request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He was probably the most admirably fitted among all his contemporaries to lead the fight for evolution among his countrymen, and the charm of his historical writings and lectures not only instilled an interest in the subject into a vast number of people but was the prime cause of not a few of the distinguished scholars of today first turning to history as their life-work" (DAB). This deluxe edition of Fiske's works was planned and in part prepared before his death in July 1901.

Langstroth, L. L.
Hamilton, Illinois: Chas. Dadant & Son. Good. 1902. Sixth Edition. Hardcover. Green cloth binding with gold pictorial imprint on front and spine. This book came down through a collection from the family of L. L. Langstroth, the father of American beekeeping, with Robert Langstroth 1940 inside front board. Light wear to edges and corners. Interior is clean. Edges of book are toned. Gutter is cracked inside both boards but binding remains tight. "L. L. Langstroth is widely credited as the father of American beekeepers and also served as a clergyman and educator. On 5 October 1852, Langstroth received a patent on the first movable frame beehive in America. A Philadelphia cabinetmaker, Henry Bourquin, a fellow bee enthusiast, made Langstroth's first hives for him and by 1852 Langstroth had more than a hundred of these hives and began selling them where he could. Langstroth spent many years attempting to defend his patent without success. He never earned any royalties because the patent was easily and widely infringed. Langstroth hives are still in common use today (Wikipedia)." The Langstroth Cottage in Oxford, Ohio is on the National Historic Landmark and is now used by Miami University as their Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching. This, the 6th edition of the revised edition was printed in 1902. Chas. Dadant and son re-wrote L. L. Langstroth's classic "The Hive and Honey-Bee" in 1885 and continued to revise the book through later printings. Langstroth's last revision was in 1859 after its initial publication in 1853.
