HUYSMANS JORIS-KARL
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

HUYSMANS Joris-Karl
[Click Below for Full Description]

AMERICAN & BRITISH WOMAN'S SUFFRAGE POSTCARD COLLECTION
A visual record of the American and British woman's suffrage movements can be seen in the postcards of the time. The woman's suffrage movements coincided with the growing popularity of postcard collecting, roughly between 1902 to 1915. In the US the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, and in the UK women's suffrage was passed in 1918 with an expansion in 1928. Our suffrage postcard collection was amassed by purchasing small groups of cards showing both pro- and anti- suffrage viewpoints on both sides of the Atlantic. The photographic cards captured images of the suffragette marches as well as movement leaders and were generally pro-suffrage. The cartoon cards generally made fun of or insulted women. The National American Woman Suffrage Association began a postcard campaign to raise awareness of the cause and to raise funds as did its British counterpart, the British National Women's Social & Political Union (WSPU). Photographic cards became available after the Kodak company created the pocket camera (No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak) produced between 1903 to 1915. The camera was able to use film that could be made into a card. Four years after the camera's appearance, in 1907, Kodak offered a service to print cards from an image sent to the company. These postcards are known as the "Real Photo Card." Similar postcards made in England are somewhat more difficult to distinguish from the commercially printed cards. Among the best known commercial studios for producing the British suffrage postcards wereF. Kehrhahn, commissioned by the British Suffrage … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original red pictorial cloth, titles to spine and front cover in black and white. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise and red quarter morocco and cloth slipcase.
Among the best known commercial studios for producing the British suffrage postcards were F. Kehrhahn, commissioned by the British Suffrage Women's Socia … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONNARD, Pierre]; COURIER, Paul-Louis [editor].
Paris Ambroise Vollard. 4to ( 30 x 26 cm). No. 170 of 200 copies on special handmade Holland paper, from a total deluxe limited edition of 250. [x], 294 pp., with 151 original black lithographs within text. Contemporary red morocco, large gold and mosaic decoration to boards, title in gold and mosaic letters on spine, beige morocco linings, Indian pink moiré silk guards, lavish gilt decoration on both chemise and slipcase by Semet & Plumelle (binder's stamp in gilt on front pastedown), all edges gilt. Vollard originally planned to publish this work with woodcut illustrations by Maurice Denis. However, Bonnard became enthralled with the book and produced his illustrations at great speed, which resulted in their being chosen by Vollard. Unlike the radical layout of Parallèlement, that of Daphnis and Chloe is more formal - though this does not in any way reduce the impact of the illustrations. 'Like Bonnard's earlier lithographs for Parallèlement and Manet's Le corbeau, these subtle plates had little appeal in 1902 for a public that preferred the sharply defined realism of the professional engraver. The edition of two hundred and fifty was not exhausted for twenty years. Nevertheless, the book is today considered one of the finest of its period.' (The Artist & the Book, 28) The binders Marcellin Semet and Georges Plumelle worked together for thirty years, from 1925 until 1955. Their bindings often feature beautiful, modern patterns, as in the present example. The Artist & the Book, 28.; Carteret 4:242; Ray, French 384. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
