TALE of PETER RABBIT, 1902 COPYRIGHT, 1st ILLUSTRATED END PAPERS

WARNE, LONDON 1902 - The First 2 years of the LONDON Publication of "The TALE of PETER RABBIT" have reference books about the various Printings/evolution of changes. I'm fascinated by it myself. Now, excluding the impossible First Private Printings in Late 1901 & Early 1902 from the realm of possibility for we mere mortals, the First few Original Warne Trade Printings are one of my joys to study - and even more to Find! Most collector's know that the First few Warne Printings (late 1902 - mid 1903) were done with patterned leaf end papers and had 97 pages with all illustrations in Color (Private Printings were B&W). The distinction between the printings was the Board Color. The last of these 4 printings changed "wept" to "shed". NOTE: NONE of These Printings had a COPYRIGHT DATE (on the rear of the Title Page)! Now, here is where it gets interesting!! All References deal with the Change in Format in Late 1903 from 97 pages to 85 pages with 4 fewer Illustrations, and the all important introduction of Color Illustrated End Papers. This is the book that mortals may hope to find and own.one of the first reduced Format (Some refer to it as the Second Edition because of that, but it is essentially the same book with all of the story identical to the Original with that one error correction - I leave such labels to the professionals - but I call it First Edition, Fifth (a) Printing). Now, so as not to get hung up on nomenclature, let's go to the First Printings of this version from Late 1903 to early 1904. The First Printing of this Format (Called the fifth Printing overall) is identified by what are referred to as "SINGLE PAGE ENDPAPERS". That doesn't mean there was only one panel. It means the two panels were identical, not with different characters! That is, they match. It is the ONLY PRINTING WITH THESE, Done in September/October 1903. The one thing that the references do not indicate is which of this run did not have any copyright, and which did!! Whatever the answer is, some were done with No Copyright and some with the FIRST APPEARANCE OF ANY COPYRIGHT, 1902! From what I can discern (and I am no expert here), this Printing is the Only One of these early ones to have had a copyright at all! If I'm wrong, some expert please let me know! Whatever the case, The Next Printing done in December 1903 had DOUBLE PAGE END PAPERS (Different Characters on the 2 panels) This is where my interest wanes.by early 1904 additional printings were essentially the same, but with variations in the characters on the end papers, and that gets tedious to figure out. _____________________________ FOR OUR PURPOSES HERE, if you are interested in a 1903 FIRST ILLUSTRATED END PAPER LONDON PRINTING, with what I believe is the RARE 1902 COPYRIGHT, YOU COULD NOT ASK FOR A NICER EXAMPLE!! It is essentially a Gem, with Lovely Deep Grey Boards, Perfect paste-on FULL SPINE with Bold Lettering to front & spine, all the dots with the o's and the SINGLE END PAPERS. The ONLY flaw in the book is the dated name in the center of the ffep, 1903. Interior Complete in 85 pages, all illustrations and original end papers. REMARKABLY CLEAN, with only issue being slight looseness of binding with a couple of signatures starting to separate (worst shown in images), but there are NO BROKEN THREADS! I do not re-glue books but the binder would easily be brought together by a pro. NO LOOSE or DAMAGED PAGES! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In 1899 Byam Shaw married the artist Evelyn Caroline Eunice Pyke-Nott, later known as Evelyn CE Shaw (1870-1959). Evelyn's sister was Isabel Codrington, another early twentieth century artist. Throughout his career Byam Shaw worked competently in a wide variety of media including oils, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink and deployed techniques such as dyeing and gilding. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and took many of his subjects from the poems of Rossetti. He exhibited frequently at Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell's gallery in New Bond Street, where he had at least five solo exhibitions between 1896 and 1916. Later in his life his popularity as an artist waned, and he turned to teaching for his living. He taught at the Women's Department of King's College London from 1904 and in 1910, with Rex Vicat Cole, he founded the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art later renamed simply the "Byam Shaw School of Art". Evelyn Shaw had an active role in the new school, teaching the miniatures class, her area of expertise. Shaw had had a long association with the artist and illustrator Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, who taught at the new school.

The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1902. Octavo, 10 volumes. One of 300 sets of the Arnheim Edition. Bound in half vellum, gilt titles to the spine, gilt decorations to the front panels; with gravure plates from paintings by F.S. Coburn; printed tissue guards; top edge gilt. In fine condition. A superior set. Edgar Allan Poe was a member of the American Romantic Movement of the Nineteenth Century. He is best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, and he is considered the inventor of the genres of detective fiction and, the then emerging, science fiction. The anguish in his fiction reflects the torment he experienced from his financial difficulties. Indeed, he was one of America's earliest practitioners of the short story, and he was the first popular American writer to attempt to live off the income of writing alone. In light of his unexpected but immense contributions, the Edgar Award is presented annually for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

[Broadside]: Harvard Illustrated Magazine Out Today

Cambridge: Harvard Illustrated Magazine. 1902(?). Broadside. Measuring 8" x 14". Printed in red and yellow on thin card stock. Modest age-toning and three tiny tack holes, near fine. Decorated with a very attractive illustration of the Egyptian goddess Isis, with wings spread over the word "Jan." presumably indicating the January issue. The illustration is signed in print "George Allan England '02" along with two Chinese(?) characters. England attended Harvard University, where he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. However, he is better known as a socialist politician and writer; he was the author of several books of speculative fiction and science fiction, as well as collections of detective stories. His story, "The Thing from - 'Outside'", appeared in the first issue of the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. In his day he was considered one of the closest rivals to Edgar Rice Burroughs. This advertising poster, exhibiting his artistic skill, is presumably very uncommon. .

        Fried. Krupp Essen-Ruhr [Photographies, brochures]

// Superb pictures on the life of a rest home of the Krupp company, created for the workers in convalescence (walks, meals, outdoor games, views of the building). Also contains : 3 pages of instructions dor the caretaker, 6 parts of instructions (for doctor, nurses, accountants, internal rules, etc.), 2 brochures in-4 with the drawing of the labor houses and their furnishing + 4 original stills of carsof harnesses of the manufacturer H. Jacobi in an envelope. AN EXCEPTIONAL SET which shows of the social politic by Alfred Krupp in the middle of the XIXth century, building houses, for his workers, insurance fund deseases, hospitals, stores at reduced prices, retirement homes.
