        Ueber die Grundlagen der Geometrie.

Göttingen: K. Geselchaft der Wissenschaften, 1902. First edition, the rare offprint issue, of Hilbert's partial solution to the fifth of his famous list of 23 problems, proposed in 1900, that he viewed as important in guiding the development of mathematics in the next century. Hilbert also gives in this work the first rigorous definition of a 'manifold,' a notion that would play a central role in twentieth century mathematics and physics. This paper is a further development of the ideas in his great book Grundlagen der Geometrie (1899), an "influential work that led by its axiomatic method to a new thinking in all mathematical fields in the 20th century" (Michael Toepell in Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p. 710). The present paper was appended to the second edition of Grundlagen der Geometrie, published in 1903. "Hilbert's interest in the foundations of geometry turned his attention to what became known as the "space problem" of Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), a distinguished physiologist and physicist who in 1868 proposed to deduce the geometrical nature of space from observed facts of experience having to do with the properties of mobile rigid bodies. Using calculus, he argued that his facts lead to the conclusion that metric relations in space correspond either to Euclidean geometry or to the geometry of Lobachevsky. In 1887 Poincaré used Lie algebra techniques to solve the analog of Helmholtz's problem in two dimensions, and Lie (1890) did the same in n dimensions. Hilbert questioned the necessity of assuming, as was done by Helmholtz and his successors, the differentiability of the transformations they considered, a sine qua non if one were to solve the problem using Lie's theory. In particular, the assumption that the group is generated by infinitesimal transformations did not fit in easily or naturally with the other geometrical axioms. Hilbert wondered whether this assumption might actually follow as a consequence of the continuity of the transformations defining the rigid motions, together with the group property and the other axioms of geometry. Thus in his famous lecture on mathematical problems Hilbert posed as his fifth problem the more general question as to what extent Lie's theory, with its differentiability assumptions, could be recovered from seemingly weaker continuity assumptions about the transformations of the group and their multiplication. "Hence there arises the question whether, through the introductions of suitable new variables and parameters, the group can always be transformed into one with differentiable defining functions; or whether at least with the help of certain simple assumptions a transformation is possible into groups admitting Lie's methods." "Shortly thereafter, Hilbert himself dealt with this problem within the limited context of the analogue of Helmholtz's problem for the plane. Here we find the first attempt to deal with continuous groups by topological means. Hilbert stressed the fact that his methods of proof were completely different from Lie's, that he would mainly use the concepts of Cantor's theory of point sets and the Jordan curve theorem for the plane. Of course, the context of Hilbert's topological approach to groups was a special and limited one, but it showed that results could be achieved and suggested the possibility of doing something similar with respect to the formidable fifth problem... it should be noted that in seeking to characterize the plane as a two-dimensional manifold, Hilbert introduced the approach that eventually led (through Weyl) to the modern concept of a manifold. "These stipulations," Hilbert wrote, "contain for the case of two dimensions, it seems to me, the rigorous definition of what Riemann and Helmholtz designated by 'multiply extended manifold' and by Lie 'number manifold' and which is at the basis of their entire investigation" (T. Hawkins, in History of Topology, I. M. James (ed.), pp. 175-6). Hilbert's fifth problem was finally solved in full generality by Andrew Gleason, Deane Montgomery and Leo Zippin in 1952. Seperately paginated offprint from: Nachrichten der Königlichen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, 1902, pp. 233-241. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. [1] 2-9 [10:blank]. A very fine copy.

[South Germany or Austria] 1902 - Water-colour drawing, 59 x 40 cm (23.2 x 15.7 inches). A large drawing showing butterflies, moths and insects, was made in 1902, in the style of Art Nouveau. The style, also known as Jugendstil oder Secession, was an international style of art, architecture and applied art, most popular between 1890 and 1910. The drawing was signed by W. Thomas, an artist we could not trace in the literature, but probably belongs to the school of south Germany or Austria, with centers in Munich and Vienna. These two major cultural cities produced a large number of artists, trained to design everything from larger architecture to smaller decorative objects in the new style. Insects and butterflies were a popular motive on the friezes and facades, as well as the forms of jewelry.

      - A well-executed series of 86 botanical drawings of South African flowering plants, all in a consistent style and format on two fine Whatman laid paper stocks, with watermarked dates 1902 and 1904. All but 10 give the species or occasionally only the genus name (mostly in Latin, but a few in English) and are signed by the artist, A. Mosnier. In very good condition and only slightly trimmed (shaving a leaf or stem in 4 drawings). A nice series of botanical drawings of South African flowering plants.

Tannhauser. A Story of All Time.

London: Kegan, Paul, Trench and Trubner. 1902. First edition. One of a run of 500 copies on laid paper [a further 6 copies were printed on vellum]. 4to. Publisher's white linen spine over blue paper covered boards. Slight rubbing to extremities, edge chipping to the white paper title label, some soiling of the white linen, some scuffing to edges and a couple of slight scratches to the front board, not penetrating the paper. A very good copy. Internally clean with light spotting, most noticeable to prelims. Last third or so of pages unopened.A strong handsome copy of a rare piece of Crowley. Legend has it that the Major Therion himself wrote this piece of teutonic drama in a single 67 hour frenzy of composition. It seems to have been met with rather grim critical response at the time, although all agreed that it was a nicely produced volume.: "Such magnificence of paper, print, and margin, that we trust we are right in assuming that he is possessed of material wealth even greater than the wealth of languages, which he displays so profusely throughout the volume. With all these attractions, he nevertheless fails to stir at all deeply. --The Pall Mall Gazette, date unknown." And my personal favourite: " We are not sure that Mr. Aleister Crowley treats life as a sacrament, because we do not understand him. --The Daily Chronicle, date unknown." Comprehensible or not, Mr. Crowley was nothing if not impossible to ignore. A distinguished copy of a scarce work.

Typed Letter, Signed, to Geo. M. Jones, of Springfield, Mo., dated Feb. 10, 1902

, 1902. 1902. Paperback. Very Good. (1)p. Letterhead stationery of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. 27cm. 143 words. Purple typewriter ink. One horizontal and two vertical folds (where folded for mailing). Original envelope preserved. Also preserved is a business card of Geo. M. Jones as President, Central National Bank, Springfield, Missouri. Washington is apparently responding to an invitation to speak in Springfield, Missouri. Washington declines but says that "confidentially there is a possibility that I will be appointed to a position in connection with the St. Louis World's Fair" and that if that happened BTW would be able to accept the invitation since he would otherwise have to come to Missouri. BTW also tells Jones that he remembers meeting him in New Orleans and says that he is sending Jones a copy of "Up from Slavery." It seems unlikely that BTW ended up having any connection with the St. Louis Fair which is remembered for having been particularly unfriendly to African American participation.

The Life of a Bold AB on his Ship in the Rolling C.

London: Dean & Son, circa, 1902. Small folio rag book with 16 illustrated pages. First edition: an unusually good copy of this attractive children's book with a wonderful naval theme. Tall and well-printed, this copy has almost none of the unravelling or "cropping" sometimes seen in a work which dates from before the introduction of pinking shears to strengthen the edges of each page. This alphabet book is the first of Henry Samuel Dean's famous rag books. It was Dean who popularised the format in the early twentieth century as a perfect introduction to reading for small children, chiefly because the material was so sturdy and, indeed, washable. His success with the format led him to establish "Dean's Rag Book Company", initially exclusively making rag books, but later expanded to produce a variety of toys. The illustrator, Will Kidd, published several children's books, including Baa Baa Black Sheep, also published by Dean. Here, Kidd's theme is the British Navy at the turn of the twentieth-century. Although most of the pages give rollicking images of Jacks and Tars enjoying life on the "C", there is also an interesting depiction at "K for the King", a silouhette of Edward VII. A particularly good page accompanies "V for the Victory", the British flagship of the Battle of Trafalgar, here immortalised in the lines: "V for the Victory / A relic of the past, / Although her timbers may decay, / Her fame will ever last."Interestingly, OCLC only lists electronic copies of this rare title; copies of the third edition of 1903 are known at the British Library and the Bodleian. Some fraying to edges otherwise in very good condition.

        The Watcher by The Threshold

London, William Blackwood and Sons 1902. First Edition. 8vo. Pp 136[32] catalogue, dated 2/02. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth, titled and ruled in orange and white, top edge trimmed, others uncut. Endpapers a little toned, uncut edges with some spotting. Cloth a little scuffed to extremities, bumped to spine ends, nevertheless clean, strong and attractive. Very good indeed. Booksellers label and Bookplate to front pastedown (of George Waterston of Edinburgh; noted printers and stationers whose company ran successfully from 1752 until 2004, which is not a bad business lifespan) tipped in before prelims is a letter dated 1900 from Buchan to the noted distillery firm of Sandeman's in answer to a query of theirs regarding a character of the same name who featured in "John Burnet of Barns."A splendid and rip-roaring collection of weird and supernatural oddities. A pretty nice copy of a tricky book, lacking most of the usual damage (chipping to the front board decoration, flattening of the spine, fraying, horrendous bumping, possession by demons etc.) and instead being bright, clean and lovely to look at, a claim that cannot be shared by most books of its distinguished vintage. Most copies of the Hound of The Baskervilles (published in the same year) are considerably less well turned out. Packed with stories of lost tribes of Picts, bizarre behaviour by the otherwise respectable and a fair amount of feverishly guzzled brandy for purely medicinal purposes. Blanchard A13.       1902. 95 black and white photographs in Japanese lacquer album. Many photographs captioned in ink. Most photographs 10 x 7.5cm, a few 14 x 10cm. Japanese scene in gold, black and red inlaid upper cover showing a man and women in a rural landscape with Mt Fuji in the background. Album measures 15 x 21cm. All edges gilt. Modern leather spine. 2 cm split and wear with a little loss of lacquer at corners and a few places on edges. Card a little foxed, two portraits torn with a little loss but otherwise photographs are in good to very good condition. Charmingly inscribed ""Rambles with a Camera"/ on/ "The China Station" To my Mother/J.R. Macey." against a hand drawn floral decorative background. From the collection of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, collector and historian. The photographer and compiler of this album, John Rory Macey (1879 - 1935) was a long serving Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy. He compiled this album while serving on board the cruiser H.M.S. Blenheim at the time she was on the China Station (1901-2) having been sent to China to strengthen the British position following the Boxer Rebellion. (Naval & Military Intelligence, 1901). J.R. Macey had an interesting career. He was promoted on retirement to Engineer Captain (18 Sept 1925). It appears that he was on board the battleship Audacious when she hit a German mine off Donegal in Ireland in October 1914 at the start of World War I, and sank. Following the loss of the Audacious Macey was moved immediately to the battleship Malaya which was present at Jutland. His final war appointment was to then new destroyer flotilla leader HMS Campbell as Flotilla E in January 1918. The ninety five photographs in this collection from his service on the China Station show scenes from Amoy, Hong Kong, Mirs Bay [Tai Pang Wan or Dapeng Bay], Amoy (15 photos), the crew enjoying social activities ashore, portraits of officers and civilian European men and women, J.R. Macey and a friend dressed in Chinese clothes in a studio portrait and some scenes aboard ship. H.M.S. Blenheim visited Japan in June 1902 and fifty seven of the photographs show Japanese scenes, Japanese people or are views that appear likely to have been taken in Japan. The final four photographs appear to be have been taken in a British town or village. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 156718)....

Thèses présentées à la Faculté des Sciences de l'Université de Paris... Recherches sur les gaz ionisés...

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1902. First edition, the dedication copy, warmly inscribed to Nobel laureate J. J. Thomson (1856-1940), of Langevin's doctoral thesis. Langevin spent the year 1897-8 working with Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, during a period of high excitement when Thomson had just identified the electron and studies of the newly discovered X-rays and radioactivity were being carried out in his laboratory. The study of ionization in gases was then at the heart of physics, having led to the discovery of the electron and the elucidation of properties of X-rays, the state of the art being summarized in Thomson's classic book Conduction of electricity through gases (1903). Under Thomson's direction, Langevin worked on ionization by X-rays, in the process discovering, independently of Sagnac, that X-rays liberate secondary electrons from metals. Based on work carried out with Thomson, Langevin's thesis was completed on his return to Paris under the supervision of Pierre Curie. "The thesis, a notable one, ... dealt mainly with the recombination and mobilities of ions, their coefficients and the relations between them. It is a standard work on this subject. In it he also devised and applied new and elegant methods of measuring these quantities which were an advance on all their predecessors and have not since been improved upon to any appreciable extent" (Nature, Vol. 146 (1940), p. 750, recording the award of the Royal Society's Copley Medal to Langevin). Langevin (1872-1946), France's leading practitioner and expositor of mathematical physics, studied under Jean Perrin and Pierre Curie; a close friend of both Curies, he was present at the birth of the study of radioactivity. Soon after completing his thesis, "Langevin entered the Collège de France to substitute for E. E. N. Mascart, whom he replaced in 1909... In his laboratory at the Collège de France, Langevin continued to study ions in gases, liquids, and dielectrics... In his dissertation he had already given a method of calculating the mobility of both positive and negative ions during their passage through a condenser by considering their diffusion and recombination" (DSB). Langevin's first theoretical papers appeared in 1904 and 1905, and dealt with the concept of electromagnetic mass, its rate of increase with velocity, and the related contraction hypotheses which suggested the impossibility in principle of determining the earth's motion through the ether. He proposed, a year before Einstein, the famous mass-energy equivalence relation. Einstein once said that Langevin would have "developed the special theory of relativity if it hadn't been done elsewhere," and praised the "extraordinary vivacity and clarity" of Langevin's scientific thinking (quoted in Quinn, Marie Curie, p. 260). In 1905 Langevin "published what was perhaps his most original and enduring contribution to physical theory, a quantitative account of paramagnetism and diamagnetism which demonstrated, he said, that it was "possible, using the electron hypothesis, to give precise meaning to the ideas [molecular models] of Ampère and Weber"" (DSB). Langevin is also known for the "Langevin equation," a new approach to Brownian motion he developed in 1908. It has proved particularly useful in the study of the molecular fluctuations of numerous systems, including non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is still used by biophysicists to study biological fluids which contain many particles in suspension. In 1909, Langevin was appointed to the prestigious position of titular Professor at the "Collège de France". He participated actively in the Solvay Physics meetings from the first one in 1911, was elected as a member of its scientific committee in 1921 then as President in 1927, in succession to Lorentz. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1934. Langevin's thesis was published by Gauthier-Villars, who published Marie Curie's thesis on radioactivity a year later. 8vo, pp. [viii], 207, [1], diagrams in text. Full maroon morocco presentation binding, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, a.e.g., silk endpapers, inner gilt dentelles. Cloth slipcase. Bien affectueusement, P. Langevin").
