Several issues are ex-library with either a bookplate or stamps on the margin or into a corner of a plate. A few hinges are rubbed. Very good. Initially, this journal was geared to the professional photographer as would be expected, since it was published by the Scovil Manufacturing Co.; the articles mirrored their concerns. Reviews and reports from photographic societies were a regular feature. First edited by Edward Wilson, the editorship transferred to John Thraill Taylor, who enlarged the scope in 1880, when it became THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES AND AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER. By 1882, an original mounted photograph was inserted, and in 1887, the size was increased to a large quarto, and fine photomechanical illustrations began appearing. It was becoming the preeminent American journal. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES was first published in 1871 as a supplement of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. It absorbed THE AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER in 1879 to become THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES AND AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER. In 1902, it merged with ANTHONY'S BULLETIN to form THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES BULLETIN. This periodical is most commonly cited as "THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES, Photographic Times Publishing Association. Duplicates of a large number of unmarked issues and bound volumes are available.         Messieurs Les Anglais. Dessins de E. Thà lem.

1902 - Oblong 4to., in original red cloth over bevelled boards with titles in gilt and large pictorial decoration in gilt and colours. 43 printed pages, with chromolithographs on every page, and text on alternate pages. Boards rubbed and worn with a little loss at head and foot of spine. First edition of this satire on Edwardian England. A sly peek at English traits and foibles from across the Channel, this book also serves as an excellent template for the styles and appearances of English clothing in the Edwardian era. This copy is accompanied by an English translation of the French text, pp.82 loose leaves, with the translation interleaved with copies of the original text and illustrations. [also with] A 29 page copy typed draft for an Introduction to an English version of the book written by Bevis Hillier. Hillier had come across a copy of this book and was enchanted by it. "I soon conceived the idea of a facsimile with a full English translation interleaved and with an Introduction to put the work in context, to confirm some of Sergius's statements and challenge or refute others". Sadly the project did not come to fruition but we are pleased to offer Hillier's copy of the book with his draft Introduction and a copy of the prototype interleaved translation.         Fairy Tales: Vasilisa the Beautiful].

Exped. Zagotovl. Gos. Bumag. Skt. Peterburg 1902 - Folio (32.5 x 25.5 cm). 12 pp., chromolithographs throughout, some of these full-page; some light spotting. Original chromolithographed wrappers; spine neatly repaired, covers slightly soiled, small black label to lower cover. Very good example of this beautiful children book, finely illustrated in colour. Over a four-year period Bilibin illustrated six tales using as backgrounds the typical Russian countryside and buildings: dark and luscious forests and meadows, blue ribbons of rivers, colourful medieval building, ancient monasteries and wood huts. He strove to create an artistic whole for the series by careful layout and design. He placed the illustrations within intricate frames of his own design, employing a variety of decorative motifs that imitate wood carvings and poker-work; and he selected and drew the ornamental lettering used on the cover and at the beginning of each tale. The books were released as thin, large-format publications in stiff wrappers and illustrated with colourful high quality chromolithographs. Bilibin's style has been frequently imitated and his approach to book design, where everything is subordinated to a single artistic concept, was very influential in the history of Russian book design (Golynets, pp. 6-7; 13-15).         Records of The Intelligence Department of The Government of the North-West Provinces of India during the Mutiny of 1857,

Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, , 1902. Including Correspondence with the Supreme Government, Dehli [sic], Cawnpore, and other Places. Preserved by, and now arranged under the Superintendence of Sir William Muir, then in Charge of the Intelligence Department, subsequently Lieutenant-Governor, North-West Provinces. Edited by William Coldstream. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original maroon diapered cloth, titles gilt to spines, blind panelling to sides, black endpapers. Bookplate of Richard Augustus Byrde, clergyman and headmaster of All Hallow's School, Honiton, 1883-1901 (d. 1906). Spines relined and the lettering sympathetically refurbished, light toning, a few trivial spots. A very good copy. First edition of this uncommon work. Muir's intelligence correspondence during the Mutiny, now deposited in Edinburgh University Library, remain an "important source for understanding the nature and course of the rising up to January 1858" (ODNB). Muir arrived in India in 1837 and was posted to the North-Western Provinces. His first twenty years of service were sound rather than exceptional, but "the sepoy mutiny and subsequent civil uprising of 1857?9 provided Muir with greater scope for initiative. On the death of Lieutenant-Governor John Russell Colvin shortly after rebel advances had necessitated the withdrawal of the European community into the Agra Fort, local responsibility was devolved to three middle-ranking civilians, including Muir. Special responsibility for intelligence made Muir also the nerve-centre for communications within and outside the region of revolt until British recovery began" (idem); his actions "held the British together at Agra during [the] siege" (Riddick). His subsequent process was steady, and his self-effacing character may have held him back, but he was eventually appointed to the provincial governorship in 1868, and retired to Britain in 1876. He is also remembered as one of the most eminent orientalists of his day, and his Life of Mahomet of History of Islam (1858), was for many years the standard biography of the Prophet in English.

        The Tale of Peter Rabbit

[London: privately printed by Strangeway & Sons], February, 1902. Sextodecimo. Original pale green boards pictorially stamped and titled in black to front cover, rounded spine. Housed in a brown quarter morocco and green cloth flat-backed folding case. Colour frontispiece and 41 full-page black and white illustrations. A little wear to spine, some loose leaves reinserted. Overall a very good copy. First edition, second impression, one of 200 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For J. Squire, from Miss Potter. March 26, 1902." A significant inscription, uniting her lesser known work as an amateur mycologist and scientific artist with her most famous children's book. Squire had assisted Potter in her research for her 1897 scientific paper "On the germination of the spores of Agaricineae". In her interest in the field of mycology, Potter had produced over 300 detailed studies of fungi, and began experimenting with the germination of fungi. She was curious about the fungal properties of dry rot (Serpula lacrymans), and asked Squire for his assistance: she noted in her diary on 29 December 1896 that she "went to see J. Squire who was out, to ask him about dry-rot. The other brother is somewhat tiresome, but offered a specimen. I rather hesitated. I was rather taken aback to find a sample the same evening in a brown paper parcel? There was a communication from J. S. on ruled paper, not just the questions I wanted. He is an intelligent little man." The specimen was delivered to Bolton Gardens, and she hid it under a stone in the garden, for fear of her parents' disapproval ("How I should catch it, my parents are not devoted to the cause of science", she wrote in her journal). Potter pursued her work in spore germination with the encouragement of her uncle, Sir Henry Roscoe (FRS and vice-chancellor of London University), and by March 1897 submitted her paper to the Linnean Society. The paper was presented on her behalf on 1 April 1897, as women were prohibited from speaking or attending; she noted that it was "well received" but required amendments, and she withdrew the paper. It was never published, and no copy exists today.

London: Frederick Warne & Co.,, 1902?10. 12 works: 11 sextodecimo, 1 small quarto. Original gilt decorated cloth, pictorial labels to front boards, pictorial endpapers, except: Peter Rabbit bound in yellow cloth lettered red, grey patterned endpapers; Squirrel Nutkin and Tailor of Gloucester in floral cloth with gilt-lettered vellum labels, pictorial endpapers; Pie and the Patty-Pan in pale blue cloth lettered blue, white moiré endpapers. Each book housed in a custom folding case. An excellent set. Some hinges split but holding, a few with light finger-marks to contents, some with contemporary gift inscriptions, a little rubbing to extremities. The Pie and the Patty-Pan with bookplates of H. Bradley Martin and Mildred Greenhill, and misbound at p. 14. Complete set of the first deluxe editions of the Peter Rabbit series. Priced at 1/6- rather than 1/- for the paper-covered books, the deluxe editions went through three iterations before a consistent style was settled upon. The first deluxe binding of Peter Rabbit was issued in two colours, yellow and green. Potter felt this unimpressive, writing, "I thought last year there was not sufficient difference between the two styles of binding ? that if the cloth binding had been more distinctly different, and pretty, there might have been more inducement to buy it." She obtained some samples of patterned cloth from her grandfather's textile printing works: Edmund Potter & Co. of Manchester, one of the largest calico printers in Europe. An art fabric binding, which Potter referred to as "a flowered lavender chintz, very pretty" was selected for the deluxe issues of the Tailor of Gloucester and Squirrel Nutkin in 1903, and vellum labels used for the title and author's name, as it was impracticable to print directly onto the fabric. The following October, a brightly coloured moiré cloth decorated in gilt was chosen for the deluxe issue, coinciding with the publication of Benjamin Bunny and the Two Bad Mice. Potter contributed to the gilt design, noting in a letter to the Warnes that "I will do some sketches of designs for the cover while I am at Melford." This design, with some minor alterations to the gilt decoration, was adopted for the deluxe editions of the rest of the series.

Paris, Henri Leclerc, 1902-1906. 1902 - SMOLLETT, Tobias. The Works. New York: George D. Sproul, 1902. Twelve volumes. Octavo, contemporary full crushed green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards with inlaid red and yellow morocco roses, raised bands, richly floral gilt dentelles, red morocco doublures with inlaid white and green morocco flowers, marbled extra endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $5000.Deluxe "Hand-Made Edition" of Smollett's works, number 10 of 150 sets, illustrated with 48 plates (double-suite, one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), very beautifully bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet."Like Richardson and Fielding, [Smollett] was a critic of manners; but being a "˜lousy Scot' and a surgeon to boot he lacked entrée to high society and wrote always as an external observer and critic. A born storyteller, he paid little attention to premeditated effects; his narrative and descriptive gifts were sufficient to keep readers keenly interested and amused". For inventiveness and diversity of episode, vivid particularlity of detail to the point of caricature and energy of style, Smollett is hardly excelled. He is to the 18th-century novel what Hogarth is to painting""a savage realist with an eye for eccentric character, which he discovers in all classes" (Baugh et al., 961-62). This set presents his complete works, including the autobiographical Roderick Random (1748), the Cervantes-inspired Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves (1760-61) and his experimental triumph The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), esteemed as one of "the greatest masterpieces of English fiction" (Baugh et al., 964). Illustrated with four plates in each volume in double-suite (one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), 48 plates in all. The set is splendidly bound in full morocco, elaborately gilt-tooled with intricate floral designs and bearing floral morocco inlays on the boards. Spines uniformly toned to brown. A fine set, most elegantly bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Just So Stories For Little Children.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1902. With illustrations by the author. Large octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, titles to front board and spine in black and white. With 22 plates by the author. Gift inscription to first blank. Tips a little bumped, some light rubbing to spine ends, a little foxing to endpapers. An excellent, remarkably bright, copy. First edition, first impression, in the second issue binding, of Kipling's famous collection of 12 stories and 12 poems including "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "How the Leopard Got His Spots." The white blocking to the spine and boards famously failed to adhere on the first issue binding, with the result that most copies now lack significant portions of it; the paint formula was changed for the second issue.

The Foundations of Geometry. Authorised Translation by E. J. Townsend, PH. D. University of Illinois.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., Ltd., 1902. Octavo. Original ribbed red cloth, spine and front board lettered gilt. With many figures in the text. Front cover with dampmark, contents unaffected; very short tear to initial leaf with publisher's advertisment; a very good copy. First edition in English, the UK issue, co-published with The Open Court Publishing Company of Chicago, of one of the most influential mathematics publications of the 20th century. Hilbert's classical investigation of the logical foundations of geometry was first published in German in 1899. Until this publication, all geometry, including such recent and sophisticated developments as hyperbolic and elliptic geometry, implied an intuitive idea of the concepts 'point', 'line', 'plane', 'between', 'lies on' etc. Hilbert's Foundations was to satisfy the relatively new intellectual necessity of formally defining the status of pure geometry, as a branch of mathematics. Points, lines and planes are mere symbols, and relations between them are no more than formally defined relations between symbols, as stated in the early pages of his essay: "We think of ... points, straight lines, and planes as having certain mutual relations, which we indicate by means of such words as 'are situated', 'between', 'parallel', 'congruent', 'continuous', etc. The complete and exact description of these relations follows as a consequence of the axioms of geometry." (DSB).

Photograph album documenting life in Cuba following the Spanish-American War

Ramon Corral, S. A. Cohner and other Havana photographers, Cuba 1902 - This large album (12" x 15") contains 48 pages filled with 93 photographs. All but nine of the photos measure at least 4.25" x 6.75" with 26 measuring around 6" x 8.25" and 22 measuring approximately 7.5" x 9". The photographs are in nice shape, a few have some rippling and/or light fading. The album is also in very good condition with some wear to the cover and small edge-tears and rippling to some pages. The photographs, taken by Havana photographers including Ramon Corral and S. A. Cohner, were likely compiled by an officer or civilian who was part of the U.S. occupying force as the collection has a definite North American tone including photo-prints of General Leonard Wood and President Roosevelt affixed to the front endpapers. The photographs begin shortly before the war as one shows the U.S.S. Maine entering Havana harbor and another shows the Spanish Cruiser Viscaya departing. The album concludes around 1902 with the ending of the U. S. Occupation. Highlights include * A group image of General Ludlow, the Military Governor of Havana during part of the occupation, and his staff; * A group image of Maximo Gomez y Baez, the Generalísimo of the Cuban Army, during its fight for independence from Spain; * Several images of El Morro, the fortress guarding the entrance to Havana harbor; * Two images showing the wreck of the Battleship Maine after it was blown-up; * A crowd of Cubans removing the statue of Queen Isabela II from its pedesta; * Many images of U. S. soldiers in Havana including the Army tent-headquarters at El Palacio de las Capitanes Generales; * Two images of what appear to be Cuban soldiers and dignitaries (likely as part of the 1899 ceremonies to honor Maximo Gomez and the fourth anniversary of start of the Cuban revolution against Spain); * Three images of the magnificent funeral possession accorded Calixto Garcia (the famous Cuban general referenced in Elbert Hubbard's famous essay, A Message to Garcia), * Important Havana buildings including the Teatro Tacon and Mascotte Hotel; * Three images of the entrance to the Colon Cemetery and its gigantic boneyard; * Peasant huts, a sugar cane field, basket weaver, vendors, street scened, storefronts, market stalls, and more. This is an important visual record of life in Cuba immediately following the Spanish-American War as seen through the lenses of local photographers and 'curated' by an occupying U. S. national. Scarce. As of 2016, no similar Cuban occupation albums are in the trade and neither ABPC nor Rare Book Hub reflect any auction records. OCLC shows one institutional holding of a similar but smaller album. A number of indivisual S. A. Cohner and Ramon Corral photographs of Havana during this period are also in the Eola Willis Cuban Photograph Collection at the College of Charleston Libraries.

[Broadside]: Harvard Illustrated Magazine Out Today

Cambridge: Harvard Illustrated Magazine. 1902(?). Broadside. Measuring 8" x 14". Printed in red and yellow on thin card stock. Modest age-toning and three tiny tack holes, near fine. Decorated with a very attractive illustration of the Egyptian goddess Isis, with wings spread over the word "Jan." presumably indicating the January issue. The illustration is signed in print "George Allan England '02" along with two Chinese(?) characters. England attended Harvard University, where he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. However, he is better known as a socialist politician and writer; he was the author of several books of speculative fiction and science fiction, as well as collections of detective stories. His story, "The Thing from - 'Outside'", appeared in the first issue of the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. In his day he was considered one of the closest rivals to Edgar Rice Burroughs. This advertising poster, exhibiting his artistic skill, is presumably very uncommon. .

Les Systèmes Socialistes. Tome Premier - Tome Second
