1902. 95 black and white photographs in Japanese lacquer album. Many photographs captioned in ink. Most photographs 10 x 7.5cm, a few 14 x 10cm. Japanese scene in gold, black and red inlaid upper cover showing a man and women in a rural landscape with Mt Fuji in the background. Album measures 15 x 21cm. All edges gilt. Modern leather spine. 2 cm split and wear with a little loss of lacquer at corners and a few places on edges. Card a little foxed, two portraits torn with a little loss but otherwise photographs are in good to very good condition. Charmingly inscribed ""Rambles with a Camera"/ on/ "The China Station" To my Mother/J.R. Macey." against a hand drawn floral decorative background. From the collection of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, collector and historian. The photographer and compiler of this album, John Rory Macey (1879 - 1935) was a long serving Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy. He compiled this album while serving on board the cruiser H.M.S. Blenheim at the time she was on the China Station (1901-2) having been sent to China to strengthen the British position following the Boxer Rebellion. (Naval & Military Intelligence, 1901). J.R. Macey had an interesting career. He was promoted on retirement to Engineer Captain (18 Sept 1925). It appears that he was on board the battleship Audacious when she hit a German mine off Donegal in Ireland in October 1914 at the start of World War I, and sank. Following the loss of the Audacious Macey was moved immediately to the battleship Malaya which was present at Jutland. His final war appointment was to then new destroyer flotilla leader HMS Campbell as Flotilla E in January 1918. The ninety five photographs in this collection from his service on the China Station show scenes from Amoy, Hong Kong, Mirs Bay [Tai Pang Wan or Dapeng Bay], Amoy (15 photos), the crew enjoying social activities ashore, portraits of officers and civilian European men and women, J.R. Macey and a friend dressed in Chinese clothes in a studio portrait and some scenes aboard ship. H.M.S. Blenheim visited Japan in June 1902 and fifty seven of the photographs show Japanese scenes, Japanese people or are views that appear likely to have been taken in Japan. The final four photographs appear to be have been taken in a British town or village. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 156718)....

Thèses présentées à la Faculté des Sciences de l'Université de Paris... Recherches sur les gaz ionisés...

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1902. First edition, the dedication copy, warmly inscribed to Nobel laureate J. J. Thomson (1856-1940), of Langevin's doctoral thesis. Langevin spent the year 1897-8 working with Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, during a period of high excitement when Thomson had just identified the electron and studies of the newly discovered X-rays and radioactivity were being carried out in his laboratory. The study of ionization in gases was then at the heart of physics, having led to the discovery of the electron and the elucidation of properties of X-rays, the state of the art being summarized in Thomson's classic book Conduction of electricity through gases (1903). Under Thomson's direction, Langevin worked on ionization by X-rays, in the process discovering, independently of Sagnac, that X-rays liberate secondary electrons from metals. Based on work carried out with Thomson, Langevin's thesis was completed on his return to Paris under the supervision of Pierre Curie. "The thesis, a notable one, ... dealt mainly with the recombination and mobilities of ions, their coefficients and the relations between them. It is a standard work on this subject. In it he also devised and applied new and elegant methods of measuring these quantities which were an advance on all their predecessors and have not since been improved upon to any appreciable extent" (Nature, Vol. 146 (1940), p. 750, recording the award of the Royal Society's Copley Medal to Langevin). Langevin (1872-1946), France's leading practitioner and expositor of mathematical physics, studied under Jean Perrin and Pierre Curie; a close friend of both Curies, he was present at the birth of the study of radioactivity. Soon after completing his thesis, "Langevin entered the Collège de France to substitute for E. E. N. Mascart, whom he replaced in 1909... In his laboratory at the Collège de France, Langevin continued to study ions in gases, liquids, and dielectrics... In his dissertation he had already given a method of calculating the mobility of both positive and negative ions during their passage through a condenser by considering their diffusion and recombination" (DSB). Langevin's first theoretical papers appeared in 1904 and 1905, and dealt with the concept of electromagnetic mass, its rate of increase with velocity, and the related contraction hypotheses which suggested the impossibility in principle of determining the earth's motion through the ether. He proposed, a year before Einstein, the famous mass-energy equivalence relation. Einstein once said that Langevin would have "developed the special theory of relativity if it hadn't been done elsewhere," and praised the "extraordinary vivacity and clarity" of Langevin's scientific thinking (quoted in Quinn, Marie Curie, p. 260). In 1905 Langevin "published what was perhaps his most original and enduring contribution to physical theory, a quantitative account of paramagnetism and diamagnetism which demonstrated, he said, that it was "possible, using the electron hypothesis, to give precise meaning to the ideas [molecular models] of Ampère and Weber"" (DSB). Langevin is also known for the "Langevin equation," a new approach to Brownian motion he developed in 1908. It has proved particularly useful in the study of the molecular fluctuations of numerous systems, including non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is still used by biophysicists to study biological fluids which contain many particles in suspension. In 1909, Langevin was appointed to the prestigious position of titular Professor at the "Collège de France". He participated actively in the Solvay Physics meetings from the first one in 1911, was elected as a member of its scientific committee in 1921 then as President in 1927, in succession to Lorentz. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1934. Langevin's thesis was published by Gauthier-Villars, who published Marie Curie's thesis on radioactivity a year later. 8vo, pp. [viii], 207, [1], diagrams in text. Full maroon morocco presentation binding, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, a.e.g., silk endpapers, inner gilt dentelles. Cloth slipcase. Bien affectueusement, P. Langevin").

        Hound of the Baskervilles, The

London: George Newnes, 1902. First Edition 'Hound of the Baskervilles' in the Original Cloth The 'Number One' Sherlock Holmes Novel DOYLE, A[rthur] Conan. The Hound of the Baskervilles. Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1902. First edition in book form (first serialized in the Strand Magazine between August 1901 and April 1902). Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 184 x 120 mm.). [8], 358, [1], [1, blank] pp. With sixteen plates (including frontispiece) by Sidney Paget. The illustration facing page 118 "Welcome, Sir Henry." has an expertly and almost invisibly repaired tear. Original scarlet cloth pictorially stamped in gilt and black (in a design by Alfred Garth Jones) and lettered in gilt on front cover and pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt on spine. The binding appears fresh and bright, but upon examination under ultra-violet light it can be seen that the cloth covers have been expertly furbished. A very good copy of this classic without the foxing that is so often seen. The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case… The Hound of the Baskervilles "was based on an idea given to [Doyle] by Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who was a nephew of Sir John Robinson and a correspondent for the Daily Express during the Boer War. The two men struck up a friendship when travelling back on the same ship from Cape Town. They spent four days together on a golfing holiday at Cromer in March 1901, and it was then that Robinson mentioned the legend (possibly of the Black Hound of Hergest associated with the Vaughan family of Hergest Court in Herefordshire). Doyle told his mother: 'Fletcher Robinson came here with me and we are going to do a small book together "The Hound of the Baskervilles"-a real creeper'…The serial publication was an unprecedented success. It was the only occasion in the magazine's history that a seventh printing was needed to meet the demand, and the queues at the publisher's offices and throughout the country were extraordinary" (Green and Gibson, p. 130).         Of Gardens. An Essay, by Francis Bacon

London: Hacon & Ricketts (for the Eragny Press), 1902. Modern fine press edition, one of 226 copies, of Renaissance philosopher Francis Bacon's influential 1625 treatise on gardens, the essay that transformed English horticulture: "a man shall ever see, that when ages grow to civility and elegancy, men come to build stately sooner than to garden finely; as if gardening were the greater perfection." Bacon himself designed ambitious gardens at Twickenham House and Gorhambury, featuring rings and avenues of complementary trees, but was not an admirer of topiary: "I, for my part, do not like images cut out in juniper or other garden stuff; they be for children." His passion for gardening was reflective of his larger insistence on the close observation of nature and empirical trial and error. The Eragny Press was celebrated for its exceptional wood engravings and its distinctive mix of French Impressionist and English Arts and Crafts styles. Unlike their contemporaries William Morris and Charles Ricketts, founders Lucien and Esther Pissarro executed the presswork of their publications themselves. Genz EP12. A striking fine press edition of a Jacobean classic, in near-fine condition. Twelvemo, original cream paper lettered in gilt over Michallet rose-patterned paper boards, title page printed in red and black, circular pictorial frontispiece. Elaborate wood-engraved opening pages printed in green, red, and black; text printed in Vale type with red and green ornaments and initials; circular device of the Eragny Press printed in green; colophon printed in red and black. Art Nouveau bookplate to front pastedown; neatly printed list of the six founders of the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland (now the Cleveland Botanical Garden) to preliminary flyleaf. Binding lightly soiled and rubbed, offsetting to endpapers.

Smith Elder should like to see the M[anu]s[cript] of Russian Literature / The book is written - I wrote it before going to lecture, - but I am thoroughly revising it (rewrote, in fact, the 1st chapter), and only the 1st chapter is quite ready: I send it to be typed. Unfortunately being an Introductory chapter, it is not typical: the others are much more interesting, and before a couple of months, I do not think the Ms. will be ready. The American Press audiences found the lectures very interesting. Yours sincerely P. Kropotkin ."

Just So Stories For Little Children. With illustrations by the author.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1902 - Large octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, titles to front board and spine in black and white. Contemporary gift inscription to front pastedown and bookseller's small ticket to bottom of front pastedown, further contemporary inscription to front blank, paper repair across the bottom of the front blank, some minor spotting throughout, spine and boards a little faded and headcap lightly bumped, overall a very good copy. With 22 plates by the author. First edition, first impression, in the second issue binding, of Kipling's famous collection of 12 stories and 12 poems including "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "How the Leopard Got His Spots." The white blocking to the spine and boards famously failed to adhere on the first issue binding, with the result that most copies now lack significant portions of it; the paint formula was changed for the second issue.

Typed Letter, Signed, to Geo. M. Jones, of Springfield, Mo., dated Feb. 10, 1902

1902. Paperback. Very Good. (1)p. Letterhead stationery of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. 27cm. 143 words. Purple typewriter ink. One horizontal and two vertical folds (where folded for mailing). Original envelope preserved. Also preserved is a business card of Geo. M. Jones as President, Central National Bank, Springfield, Missouri. Washington is apparently responding to an invitation to speak in Springfield, Missouri. Washington declines but says that "confidentially there is a possibility that I will be appointed to a position in connection with the St. Louis World's Fair" and that if that happened BTW would be able to accept the invitation since he would otherwise have to come to Missouri. BTW also tells Jones that he remembers meeting him in New Orleans and says that he is sending Jones a copy of "Up from Slavery." It seems unlikely that BTW ended up having any connection with the St. Louis Fair which is remembered for having been particularly unfriendly to African American participation.

        Signed Photograph

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Signed photograph of the prominent American abolitionist, social activist, poet, and the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Howe is shown as an older woman in a lace dress and veil, and has signed on the mount below the image on the photographer's mount. Photographed in 1902 by J. E. Purdy of Boston, with the photographer's mark in the lower right corner and on the mount.  6 x 8 inches. Block of toning from a prior matting around the center of the mount, else in fine and crisp condition.<br style="">Howe was an important advocate for abolitionism and a social activist, particularly for women's suffrage. She was inspired to write "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" after she and her husband visited Washington, D.C., and met Abraham Lincoln at the White House in November 1861. During the trip, her friend James Freeman Clarke suggested she write new words to the song "John Brown's Body", which she did on November 19. The song was set to William Steffe's already-existing music and Howe's version was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. It quickly became one of the most popular songs of the Union during the American Civil War. After the Civil War, Howe helped found the New England Women's Club and the New England Woman Suffrage Association, later becoming co-president of the American Woman Suffrage Association and the president of the Association for American Women, the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association and the Association for the Advancement of Women. In 1908, Howe became the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Overall, a very handsome set. Due to size and weight, extra shipping charges may apply. Poe's stature as a major figure in world literature is primarily based on his ingenious and profound short stories, poems, and critical theories, which established a highly influential rationale for the short form in both poetry and fiction. Regarded in literary histories and handbooks as the architect of the modern short story, Poe was also the principal forerunner of the "art for art's sake" movement in nineteenth-century European literature. Whereas earlier critics predominantly concerned themselves with moral or ideological generalities, Poe focused his criticism on the specifics of style and construction that contributed to a work's effectiveness or failure. In his own work, he demonstrated a brilliant command of language and technique as well as an inspired and original imagination. Poe's poetry and short stories greatly influenced the French Symbolists of the late nineteenth century, who in turn altered the direction of modern literature. It is this philosophical and artistic transaction that accounts for much of Poe's importance in literary history. -- Poetry Foundation
