Superb print signed and inscribed, (Sarah, 1844-1923, Actress 'The Divine Sarah')

1902 - "Que Dieu vous donne le bonheur" (May God Grant you happiness or success or good fortune) showing her three quarters length in the role of Sardou's Gismonda, in a magnificent Arts and Crafts frame, 6½" x 4¼", in frame 14" x 10", no place, The New York Times of 26th November 1894 wrote "BERNHARDT AS GISMONDA; Paris Enthusiastic Over Her Acting in Sardou's Play. GREATEST OF HER ARTISTIC TRIUMPHS. It would be easy to say that Sardou had never been thus triumphant, Bernhardt never so perfect, stage mounting never more exquisitely beautiful, or costumes as magnificent, and, finally, that no play has ever been better cast than "Gismonda." This would be no exaggeration; it would be only the truth, but the subject demands minute description."

3000 gr.

First edition. Mixed collection, largely supernatural, including "The Last of the Vampires," a surviving prehistoric 'bat-reptile' that drinks blood; "The Man-Eating Tree," a vampire plant; "Medusa," a hypnotic vampire; and, for variety, the futuristic "War in Europe" and "The Hunting of the Soko," a missing link.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FUGITIVE ANNE: A ROMANCE OF THE UNEXPLORED BUSH ..

London: John Long, [1902].. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-427 [428] [429-432: ads], original decorated scarlet cloth, front panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel, all edges trimmed. First edition. A variant binding for the publisher's "Haymarket Novels" series. Lost race adventure novel of the discovery of the Acans in the interior of Northern Australia. "Despite the ludicrous plot the first part of FUGITIVE ANNE, in which Anne is making her way across the countryside, is interesting. Mrs. Praed grew-up in a bush station, and her knowledge of the landscape and native life, which she conveys well, can be fascinating. As a result part of the book has a secondary appeal of an Upfield novel, Australia in the primitive days." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1814. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 178 (recording only a later edition: "an infuriatingly elusive book in British edition."). Australian and New Zealand "Lost Race" Fiction in the Collection of Stuart Teitler (private list), p. 3. Bleiler (1978), p. 160. Reginald 11863. Wolff 5623. Not in Larnach. Cloth worn and frayed at upper spine end, narrow stain along bottom edge of front panel, small stain at top edge of rear panel, front free endpaper detached (the endpapers are made from flimsy pulp paper), but still a tight, very good copy with bright gold stamping. A very elusive book in any condition. (#151629)

Florenz und Leipzig: Verlegt bei Eugen Diederichs, 1899, 1902.. Octavo, two volumes: pp. [i-viii] [1-2] 3-349 [350] [351-352: ads]; [1-4] [1-2] 3-323 [324] [325-328: ads], decorations in the text by W. Caspari, original pictorial wrappers printed in black, all edges untrimmed; original pictorial green cloth. front and spine panels stamped in black, all edges stained black, green endpapers. First edition. A utopian novel presenting a monistic world view. "In these books, Hart combined his own imaginative cultural history with attempts to present monism in the most broadly accessible and least offensive way. For example, unlike Wille and Bölsche, Hart was quick to discard the notion that human freedom is subject to the causal laws of nature. Rather, Hart suggested that causality itself is an illusion that disappears when one acquires the monist 'perspective of eternity.' With aim to replicate his Friedrichschlagen experience and to spread, in Wille's words, the 'Kameradschaft zwischen Kopfarbeitern und begabten Handarbeitern aber auch geistvollen Vertretern des Reichtums,' Hart was hard pressed to avoid political questions. In DER NEUE GOTT, he treated politics with disdain, scorning the politician as one who sees 'nur die engeren und beschränkteren politischen und sozialen Zustände vor Augen.'" - Eric Paul Jacobson, Cosmology to Ecology: The Monist World-view in Germany from 1770-1930, pp. 250. Julius Hart and his brother Heinrich were noted literary critics of their time who founded the "Neue Gemeinschaft" - "new community" - a neo-romantic circle of writers. Negley, Utopian Literature 526. Not in Bloch, Brandt, Lexikon or Nagl. Both volumes are in very good condition. KVK reports 11 copies. COPAC records 4 copies. (#147190)

Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott.

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1902. Hardcover. 8vo. 5 volumes. With 10 plates (2 per volume). “The Cambridge Edition”. Bound in half dark brown calf with marbled boards and end papers. Spines are brightly gilt in compartments. Top edge is gilt. The binding is fresh with very little wear; some spots of fading are present. Many leaves are unopened. The outer edge of an occasional leaf is a bit rough; interior pages are otherwise clean. John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854) was an English minister, an author, and the son-in-law of Sir Walter Scott. The DNB states that his “Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott” [first published, 1837-38 in 7 volumes] “…may safely be described as, next to Boswell's ‘Johnson', the best [biography] in the language.” The publisher's note to this 1902 edition specifies that “…the text has been annotated by fuller accounts of many of the persons to whom Scott or Lockhart refer, and very many passages have been expanded or illuminated by extracts from Scott's letters and journals, and from a variety of books and articles bearing upon the subject… All the editor's work is indicated by its enclosure in brackets. Lockhart's later notes are indicated by the years 1839, 1845, and 1848, enclosed in parentheses.”

        The River War.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., , 1902. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan. Edited by Col. F. Rhodes, DSO. New and revised edition. Octavo (206 x 136 mm). Contemporary red half morocco for Hatchards, red linen cloth sides, gilt panelled spine, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Kitchener, 14 coloured maps and plans (6 folding), 8 sketch-maps in the text. Front joint sometime skilfully rehinged, back joint slightly split at head and tail, dampstain to corner of frontispiece, bound without the publisher's 40pp. catalogue. A handsomely bound copy. First one-volume edition, revised (second edition overall). Inscribed by Churchill on the half-title: "from Winston S. Churchill, 6 Nov. 1902". This recension of The River War was published in an edition of 1,003 copies, "week of 19 October 1902" (Cohen), making Churchill's presentation inscription notably early. Of the handful of inscribed and dated copies that have appeared at auction since the war only two are of an earlier date than ours: Churchill to his future best man "Hugh Cecil from Winston S. Churchill 30. Oct. 1902" (Christie's 2011) and the earl of Rosebery's copy, inscribed "From Winston S. Churchill. Oct. 1902" (Sotheby's 2005); Cohen notes that the latter was sent with a letter dated 23 October 1902. From the library of William Humble Ward (1867–1932), second earl of Dudley, lord lieutenant of Ireland and governor-general of Australia, with his armorial bookplate ("Earl of Dudley, 7 Carlton Gardens"). Interestingly, Dudley's library was catalogued by Hatchards in 1907; he was sworn in as governor-general of Australia at Sydney in September 1908. "When The River War was republished in 1902, Churchill shortened it by a third. Every chapter was revised, if not omitted altogether, and all criticisms of Kitchener and the British Army were cut out. Now, as a Conservative MP, he found it prudent to tone down his questioning of the imperialist adventure" (Jonathan Rose, The Literary Churchill: Author, Reader, Actor, 2015, p. 61). Churchill did add a new chapter "describing the destruction of the Khalifa and the end of the war" (Cohen). Signed copies of this edition of The River War are decidedly uncommon, particularly so when dated so soon after publication.

Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott.

Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston and New York 1902 - 8vo. 5 volumes. With 10 plates (2 per volume). "The Cambridge Edition". The DNB states that his "Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott" [first published, 1837-38 in 7 volumes] " may safely be described as, next to Boswell’s ‘Johnson’, the best [biography] in the language." The publisher’s note to this 1902 edition specifies that " the text has been annotated by fuller accounts of many of the persons to whom Scott or Lockhart refer, and very many passages have been expanded or illuminated by extracts from Scott’s letters and journals, and from a variety of books and articles bearing upon the subject All the editor’s work is indicated by its enclosure in brackets. Lockhart’s later notes are indicated by the years 1839, 1845, and 1848, enclosed in parentheses." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Africa.

Helene Bertha Amalie Leni Riefenstahl (* 22. August 1902 in Berlin - + 8.
