        The Pothunters

A&C Black, London 1902 - 8vo, pp. 272. Original blue boards, lettered in silver to spine, loving cup in silver to front panel. One small and slight scuff mark to centre of spine, light wear to spine ends, corners a trifle bumped. Offsetting to endpapers, and very light and very occasional spotting to text edges. An all but near fine copy. Frontispiece and nine plates by R. Noel Pocock. First edition of the author's first book. First issue, with no advertisements, and with silver loving cup to front board. First published in serial (and slightly condensed) form in Public School Magazine, January--March 1902. '[I]n 1900, [boys' magazine] The Captain appeared, and in the first number was a serial by Fred Swainson called Acton's Feud. It began, I remember, 'Shannon, the old international, had brought a hot side down to play the school.' and if there has ever been a better opening line than that, I have never come across it. It was something entirely new in school stories -- the real thing -- and it inflamed me to do something in that line myself. If it hadn't been for Acton's Feud, I doubt if I would ever have written a school story.' (PGW to Richard Usborne, 11 January 1852, cited by Ratcliffe) Three cheers, then, for Fred Swainson: Wodehouse's first book is a vivid, funny, exciting boy's story, with all the genre's usual moralising and sentimentalism swept away, and written by someone who, at the time of its publication, was still barely more than a boy himself -- just twenty years old. Wodehouse knew his audience, and The Pothunters set his course for the rest of the decade. Not as scarce as the first books of most major authors, for some reason, but very scarce in such eminently collectable condition. McIlvaine A-1a

        [Loose Photo Album Pages]: Alabama

Alabama. 1902-1907. Six loose album pages containing 60 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3" x 3", some with captions. Near fine photos with some fading.A collection of photos beginning in 1902 revolving around a family from Alabama. The earliest photos are taken in Selma and show images of the Schuh-Miller Lumber Company including a log train, their "first office," and the lumber yard itself. The most obvious inference is that these images were taken by one of the owners of the lumberyard. The next section of photos from 1903 show the family around their home. One of these photos shows the family's children posed with their African-American maids. An uncaptioned page shows some horse drawn wagons with animals including elephants which appear to be part of a circus. Other photos show African-Americans working on a railroad and another page of African-Americans on a Selma street. A page from 1907 shows the state funeral of Senator John Tyler Morgan. These photos are captioned "hearse containing Morgan's body," "Alabama National Guard leading Senator Morgan's funeral carriage," and "temporary tent over Morgan's grave."An interesting collection of photographs kept by an Alabama family at the turn of the century. .

Photo Album]: Travels to Northern Africa, India, Turkey, Persia, Russia (Azerbaijan), Tunis, Greece, and Western Europe

1902 - Oblong quarto. Red half calf and cloth with "Photographs" in gilt on the front board. Erosion of the calf, which is a bit powdery, else sound and very good. A collection of 356 good quality photographs of turn-of-the-century foreign travels. The majority are 3" x 2.25" silver gelatin prints, with a substantial number of prints that are a bit larger, including a few cyanotypes. Condition of the photographs is mostly near fine. Most have been captioned, either in pencil beneath the mount, or on the negative. Most bear the date 1901, a few 1902. The unidentified photographer was an exhaustive shutterbug, and it seems that little that he observed went undocumented. Many of the images are of architecture, but some are of native peoples as well. There are generous selections from several countries including India (Bombay, Agra, Delhi); Egypt (Karnak and other parts of Luxor, Cairo, Thebes); Russia (the Azerbaijan region: wagons, caravans, and Cossacks); Persia (Tehran, soldiers, Persians, more caravans). The Western European shots are primarily of architecture. A nice selection of images, with more than the usual percentage (probably about two-thirds) from "exotic" locales. One interesting element is that mounted in the rear of the album are photographs (contemporaneous with the others) that have been printed from damaged negatives. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mit der faksimilierten Widmung am Frontispiz. - Ebd. leicht berieben, Buchblock leicht gelockert, leichte Gbrsp. Preconquest. 49 leaves (48 painted pages on each side; initial and terminal pages attached to original wooden covers). 13 x 15 centimeters. (total length about 735 centimeters). The history of the manuscript prior to 1596-1600, the date of a Vatican catalog which describes the number 3773, is unknown. Like other screen-folds of the Borgia Group, Codex Vaticanus B contains a complex presentation of the tonalpohualli, the 260 day Mesoamerican divinatory calendar. The 28 identifiable sections of manuscript treat specific aspects of the tonalpohualli such as the 5 x 52 and 20 x 13 days and their associated deities as well as various series of gods, world directions, etc. The first partial publication was by Humboldt (1810), the first edition by Kinsborough (1831-48). The screen-fold facsimile in color published by the Duc de Leubat (1896) is accompanied by pamphlets describing the manuscript by Paso y Troncoso and giving its history. Seler, English translation, (1902-1903) gives detailed commentary and annotated line drawings of each page.Condition:Wrappers heavily chipped and beginning to separate at back hinge, some pages archivally reinforced and some chipping to some edges.         Autograph letter signed.

Pirbright, Surrey, 18. VIII. 1902. - 8vo. 3 pp. on 3 ff. A sharp letter revealing Stanley's sensitivity to cultures other than his own and his desire to impart this on others. To Robert Stein, criticizing his correspondent's remarks about the French, Germans, Americans and the English: "It is impossible to read your article without coming to the conclusion that you are an accomplished writer, & I feel immensely flattered at being asked to endorse what has been so ably & eloquently argued. I am sorry however to say that my rude common sense prevents me from approving your suggestion. I am neither pro-German, or pro-French and I distinctly see that the ideas you broach will not please Frenchmen nor indeed any American or Englishman who is of clean unbiassed mind, & I doubt, whether the higher class of Germans will regard them as wise. I cannot divest my mind quite from the suspicion that there is some irony concealed in your proposals, & if I were a Frenchman I feel I should be furiously angry. You may be innocent of all intention to provoke Frenchmen, but it is too evident your exaggerated ideas of German[y] might border perilously near being offensive. If America talked of American projects with such exaggerated insinuation of her power, & her wealth &c, she would be simply insufferable, & no lover of Germany would care to put ideas in her mouth which would estrange the good will of every nation. Germany is too rich & powerful to need such language to impress her greatness & her value as one of the foremost among the nations. As yet she feels the need of more land, but if out of inordinate conceit she proclaims her greedy love of it & wantonly promotes discord to indulge it, she will end in making herself as detested as the French did previous to 1870-71 [.]". - On his imprinted stationery; very scattered spotting.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 : 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

Histoire d'Eduard Manet et de son oeuvre. Avec un catalogue des peintures et des pastels.

Paris, H. Floury 1902 - One of 600 unnumbered copies. Illustrated with 23 full-page plates, 8 in color, and 47 b/w illustrations in the text. Includes two original etchings the Child with the Dog and the Olympia. This is the first catalog raisonné of the works of Manet. Bound in grey cloth with the original paper front cover preserved. The text block is good; somewhat shaken but generally clean without tears. This was used as a gallery reference copy and there are some light penciled notations in the catalog at the rear of the volume. The plates are all fine, although one of the two original etchings is detached [The Child with the Dog.] with several small tears, nicks, and browning at edges not effecting the image. Still very good margins. Ex-libris the Stendahl Art Gallery, Los Angeles. This volume was a well-used reference copy in the gallery’s reference library, hence the rough condition. Until its recent closure, the Stendahl Gallery was one of America's oldest continuously operating private art galleries. Art from the Stendahl collections found a home in The Louvre and many other major institutions throughout the world. Upon closing the gallery, the family donated a significant collection of photographs and documentation to the Getty Research Institute. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Grant Richards, 1902.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-270 [271: blank] [272: printer's imprint], original brown cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed. First edition. This oddly titled, but glorious volume ... [which] appeared in 1902 under the Grant Richards imprint, is a collection of four novellas loosely linked by both a common theme and the reappearance of certain minor characters from one tale to another. Stylistically, the novellas are a great improvement over the earlier short stories. O'Sullivan has discovered humor, albeit of a midnight-black variety, and perhaps a new literary master as well. The lean, razor-sharp intelligence of Baudelaire that had heretofore served as O'Sullivan's literary Pharos has been supplanted by a more discursive, grandly baroque manner of expression. O'Sullivan now sounds like nothing so much as an English-language Leon Bloy. The first section, "Of Kindred," presents another mysterious stranger offering a deal too good to be true to another desperate protagonist. But whereas in the earlier story, "The Bargain of Rupert Orange," the Mephistopheles figure is a real demon, and Orange, a man within an ace of starving to death in a garret, in this tale an aging titled hypochondriac has a run-in with a mysterious German academic with a novel theory on the prolongation of life. (Briefly it consists of identifying your strongest enemies and gifting them with annuities that expire upon your death, thus turning their hatred into fervent wishes for your continued good health.) The black humor aspect involves one enemy misunderstanding the arrangement and literally killing the goose that laid the golden egg." - Andrew Mangravite. Not in the Colbeck catalogue. Mild rubbing to cloth at edges, small spot to rear cover, endpapers tanned, hairline crack along inner rear hinge, a very good copy. "Library" is blind-stamped on the front cover, but there are no library marks inside or outside. A very scarce book. (#155530)
