        Works

1902. SMOLLETT, Tobias. The Works. New York: George D. Sproul, 1902. Twelve volumes. Octavo, contemporary full crushed green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards with inlaid red and yellow morocco roses, raised bands, richly floral gilt dentelles, red morocco doublures with inlaid white and green morocco flowers, marbled extra endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $5000.Deluxe “Hand-Made Edition” of Smollett’s works, number 10 of 150 sets, illustrated with 48 plates (double-suite, one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), very beautifully bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet.“Like Richardson and Fielding, [Smollett] was a critic of manners; but being a ‘lousy Scot’ and a surgeon to boot he lacked entrée to high society and wrote always as an external observer and critic. A born storyteller, he paid little attention to premeditated effects; his narrative and descriptive gifts were sufficient to keep readers keenly interested and amused… For inventiveness and diversity of episode, vivid particularlity of detail to the point of caricature and energy of style, Smollett is hardly excelled. He is to the 18th-century novel what Hogarth is to painting—a savage realist with an eye for eccentric character, which he discovers in all classes” (Baugh et al., 961-62). This set presents his complete works, including the autobiographical Roderick Random (1748), the Cervantes-inspired Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves (1760-61) and his experimental triumph The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), esteemed as one of “the greatest masterpieces of English fiction” (Baugh et al., 964). Illustrated with four plates in each volume in double-suite (one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), 48 plates in all. The set is splendidly bound in full morocco, elaborately gilt-tooled with intricate floral designs and bearing floral morocco inlays on the boards. Spines uniformly toned to brown. A fine set, most elegantly bound.

        SEVEN POEMS & TWO TRANSLATIONS

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1902. ONE OF 325 COPIES on paper (and 25 on vellum). This is one of the 26 intriguing (and obviously uncommon) examples Tidcombe has identified as imitation Doves bindings, a group of handsomely executed volumes that continue to be mysterious. It differs from its fellows by offering significantly more in the way of gilt decoration. The work here is the fourth publication of the Doves Press, a volume that gathers together a number of poems by Tennyson, written at various times in his long life and all reflecting his abiding interest in Homer and Greek myth. The collection is framed by two short translations of passages from Homer's "Iliad," both featuring images of fire. Two original poems concern the tragic figure of Oenone, the first love of Paris, and two are inspired by the "Odyssey." The other three treat, in turn, the figure of the Theban seer Tiresias; Tithonus, lover of the goddess of Dawn; and the myth of the theft of Persephone by Death.. 233 x 165 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 1/2"). 55, [1] pp. ONE OF 325 COPIES on paper (and 25 on vellum). EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE DARK BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, IN THE STYLE OF THE DOVES BINDERY (stamp-signed and dated 1909 on rear turn-in), covers with gilt frame formed by interlocking double rules, side- and cornerpieces with oakleaf clusters accented by open circles and solid dots, large double gilt-rule lozenge in central panel, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with open circle at center, an oakleaf cluster extending above and below it, dots in corners, gilt vertical titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins with oakleaf clusters at corners, all edges gilt and gauffered with two rows of dots. In a blue cloth slipcase. Tomkinson, p. 45; Tidcombe DP-4. For the binding: Tidcombe, p. 463 The usual faint offsetting from the facing turn-ins on the front and rear free endpaper, half a dozen leaves with minor foxing just to the lower fore-edge corner, otherwise VERY FINE, the text clean, fresh, and smooth, and the lovely binding especially lustrous and virtually unworn. This is one of the 26 intriguing (and obviously uncommon) examples Tidcombe has identified as imitation Doves bindings, a group of handsomely executed volumes that continue to be mysterious. It differs from its fellows by offering significantly more in the way of gilt decoration.         Paradise Lost & Paradise Regain'd.

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1902 & 1905. Presentation copy of Paradise Regain'd inscribed by the printer Emery Walker to Robert Catterson Smith together with a copy of Paradise Lost. Two volumes, each limited to 325 copies, apparently a married set. Printed in red and black throughout. Sm. 4to., original full limp vellum by the Doves Bindery, spine lettered in gilt. Regain'd is an extremely good, fresh and crisp copy, with only a slight scratch to the bottom of the spine, Lost has a dust-soiled top edge and a few creases and tiny marks but is fundamentally a good, bright copy. Paradise Regain'd has a remarkable inscription written by the printer Emery Walker on his 80th birthday in 1933 to Robert Catterson-Smith who was the principal of the Birmingham School of Art and who worked with Morris, Emery Walker and Burne-Jones on the Kelmscott Chaucer. Paradise Lost has a 1907 ownership inscription on the front free endpaper.

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire Année complète 1902 EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Bureaux de la Revue, 1902. Fine. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1902, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding Edition Editor at bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, small gilded iron and double gold mesh queue.Douze January to December 1902. Hedges numbers conservées.Chaque number is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Blum ("The eyes I love"), Paul Fort, Henri Ghéon, André Gide ("Oscar Wilde"), Ms. Alphonse Daudet, Walt Whitman, founded in etc.Publication 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine belonging to the first wave of small symbolist journals. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular collaborators, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. L'Ermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time like the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] that deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his symbolist spirit, employees are more interested in poetry than fiction. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, believes that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddling the end of the century aesthetics and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

        I. International Ausstellung Für Moderne Dekorative Kunst in Turin MDCCCCII

vi, 340 pp. overview of the ground-breaking exhibition featuring works by international masters and minor practitioners of the then prevalent Art Nouveau aesthetic, with texts on exhibited works, buildings at the exposition, artists and architects, approx. 400 fine illustrations throughout (several in color) showing architecture and a wide array of decorative objects by Behrens, Mackintosh, Olbrich, Carlo Bugatti, Raimondo D'Aronico (at the time the chief architect to the Sultan of Constantinople), and many others. Some very minor foxing. 4to. Embossed and gilt-decorated vellum, slightly rubbed along spine. Darmstadt and Leipzig (Anstalt Alexander Koch) 1902. Ex-libris Bruno Héroux. A beautiful edition of an important work that offers an invaluable compendium of material, profusely illustrated, shedding light on the great outpouring of creativity in the decorative arts and architecture at the turn of the 20th century, in styles known variously as Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Stile Liberty, et al. The first part of the present publication features documentation of the architecture of the exhibition, much of which was created by D'Aronico, whose entrances, pavilions, and exhibition and administrative buildings were influenced by a visit to the Darmstadt Artist's Colony designed by Joseph Olbrich. Other illustrations show a wide variety of interior decoration, furniture, ceramics, lamps and other household objects, book arts, jewelry, screens, etc. The German edition is very scarce institutionally; the French edition is much more widely available.         Crown Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia].[London, 1935]. Matt silver print (ca. 28 x 36 cm), watercolour, pastel, gouache and oil paint. Mounted on paper in a passe-partout. Signed "Lafayette" in pencil on the mount. In a wooden frame (ca. 53 x 64 cm), under glass.

      - For Lafayette: Russell Harris, Narrated in calm prose. Impressively coloured photographic portrait of the Saudi crown prince Saud (1902-1969), by the eminent London photographic studio Lafayette. Prince Saud, the future King Saud of Saudi Arabia, had been appointed crown prince in 1933 and fought in the 1934 war against Yemen. After the war his father encouraged him to travel abroad, and over the next few years he visited Saudi-Arabia's neighbours, Europe and the United States. While in London, Prince Saud had his portrait taken by the Lafayette studio, originally established in Dublin in 1880. It is no coincidence that Prince Saud chose a firm that had photographed numerous emperors, kings, sultans, earls, early movie stars, etc. The firm would also provide hand coloured prints on request, and the current photograph is an example of the very high quality they provided. The photograph of Prince Saud was coloured by painting over the photograph with watercolours and pastel. A subsequent treatment made it possible to use tiny drops of oil paint to highlight the gold trimming on his robe, the jewels and pearls on his sword and the small lights in his eyes. In very good condition, with only very minor craquelure. A colour portrait of the future King Saud of Arabia: a photograph enhanced by an expert painter, from the leading British firm for the genre.

With a Saucepan Over the Sea. Quaint and Delicious Recipes from the Kitchens of Foreign Countries.

8vo., original decorative cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper board, with very scarce dust wrapper. Illustrated with frontispice and 12 plates from photographs. Wrapper with some loss to spine and upper panel, some chipping, rubbing and sunning, nonetheless a scarce survival in any condition. First edition of this cookery book intended to introduce European cookery to Americans, drawing on recipes popular across the ages with everyone from kings to peasants. Written at the turn of the century and directed at a middle-class American audience, this book was intended to introduce European cookery in an accessible yet informative way. Lamenting the ridiculous decadence of many earlier European cookbooks, the editor, Adelaide Keen, encourages the reader to keep an open mind and explore some rustic foods, while still enjoying many healthy, interesting dishes that would be familiar even to European royalty. Included are such diverse recipes as lobster mulligatawny, chestnut soup, bacalao, sauer-braten, Alexander Dumas' recipe for salad, King Henry's shoe strings, and almond pudding.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition.

Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

THE LEOPARD'S SPOTS. | THE CLANSMAN. | THE TRAITOR

1902. Illustrated by C. D. Williams [1st and 3rd book] | Arthur I. Keller [2nd book]. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1902 | 1905 | 1907. Original red cloth decorated in white. First Editions of all three novels that together make up Dixon's unabashedly racist Reconstruction Trilogy. Dixon, a native Tarheel, graduated from Wake Forest and became first a lawyer, then a legislator, and then a Baptist minister in North Carolina. THE LEOPARD'S SPOTS was his first novel "dealing with the race question in America"; it was followed in 1905 by THE CLANSMAN, which "was told from a virulently Southern point of view and painted the Ku Klux Klan as a band of dedicated knights extirpating an intolerable menace" [K&H]. THE TRAITOR is dedicated to "The Men of the South who suffered exile, imprisonment and death for the daring service they rendered our country as citizens of the Invisible Empire."~Published 37-to-42 years after the end of the war, these books (but especially THE CLANSMAN) were widely read, and -- with such famous episodes as Marion Lenoir (and her mother) leaping from a cliff after she was raped by a "Negro" -- helped to set back whatever progress had been made in race relations over those intervening years. But it was of course D. W. Griffith's masterful adaptation of THE CLANSMAN into the epochal 1914 silent film, "The Birth of a Nation," that would in large part be responsible for the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan -- and would cause these books to have an indirectly immense influence upon American race relations.~All three volumes are in FINE condition -- which is rather remarkable, given the tendency of the white cover pigment to erode (but not on these copies). Though it is controversial to offer Dixon's books today, they do represent a period of our history that is not to be forgotten. Loosely inserted into THE CLANSMAN is a signed note from Dixon to (Dean) Tatnall Brown of Haverford College.

A monograph of the Turdidae, or family of Thrushes . edited and completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe.

London Henry Sotheran 1902 - First edition. 2 volumes, 4to, photogravure portrait, 149 hand-coloured lithographed plates, heightened with gum arabic, by and after J.G. Keulemans, contemporary half red morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, lightly rubbed, an excellent set. One of the greatest of Mr Seebohm's discoveries in ornithology was the application of the character of the plumage of the young birds for the differentiation of the thrushes (Turdidae) from the Warblers (Sylvidae). Henry Seebohm (1832-1895) was a wealthy English businessman and prominent amateur ornithologist. He wrote two books on his travels to Siberia as well as a number of substantial ornithological monographs with hand-coloured plates, mostly by Keulemans. Keulemans began his career as a taxidermist providing stuffed birds to the State Museum of Natural History at Leiden. The director of that museum encouraged Keulemans to pursue his love of natural history, where he obtained a scientific appointment after an expedition to West Africa in 1865 and 1866. His accomplishments in illustration came to the notice of Richard Bowdler Sharpe, later a director of the British Museum, who encouraged him to move to England. Keulemans quickly achieved wide recognition and established himself as the most popular bird artist of the late Victorian period.         FUGITIVE ANNE: A ROMANCE OF THE UNEXPLORED BUSH ..

London: John Long, [1902].. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-427 [428] [429-432: ads], original decorated scarlet cloth, front panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel, all edges trimmed. First edition. A variant binding for the publisher's "Haymarket Novels" series. Lost race adventure novel of the discovery of the Acans in the interior of Northern Australia. "Despite the ludicrous plot the first part of FUGITIVE ANNE, in which Anne is making her way across the countryside, is interesting. Mrs. Praed grew-up in a bush station, and her knowledge of the landscape and native life, which she conveys well, can be fascinating. As a result part of the book has a secondary appeal of an Upfield novel, Australia in the primitive days." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1814. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 178 (recording only a later edition: "an infuriatingly elusive book in British edition."). Australian and New Zealand "Lost Race" Fiction in the Collection of Stuart Teitler (private list), p. 3. Bleiler (1978), p. 160. Reginald 11863. Wolff 5623. Not in Larnach. Cloth worn and frayed at upper spine end, narrow stain along bottom edge of front panel, small stain at top edge of rear panel, front free endpaper detached (the endpapers are made from flimsy pulp paper), but still a tight, very good copy with bright gold stamping. A very elusive book in any condition. (#151629)

        [Loose Photo Album Pages]: Alabama

Alabama. 1902-1907. Six loose album pages containing 60 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3" x 3", some with captions. Near fine photos with some fading.A collection of photos beginning in 1902 revolving around a family from Alabama. The earliest photos are taken in Selma and show images of the Schuh-Miller Lumber Company including a log train, their "first office," and the lumber yard itself. The most obvious inference is that these images were taken by one of the owners of the lumberyard. The next section of photos from 1903 show the family around their home. One of these photos shows the family's children posed with their African-American maids. An uncaptioned page shows some horse drawn wagons with animals including elephants which appear to be part of a circus. Other photos show African-Americans working on a railroad and another page of African-Americans on a Selma street. A page from 1907 shows the state funeral of Senator John Tyler Morgan. These photos are captioned "hearse containing Morgan's body," "Alabama National Guard leading Senator Morgan's funeral carriage," and "temporary tent over Morgan's grave."An interesting collection of photographs kept by an Alabama family at the turn of the century. .
