[Manuscript]: "The Harvard Base Ball Season of 1902" in Harvard Graduates' Magazine

1902. First. Seven pages Signed at the conclusion by Barrett Wendell of the class of '77, undated but presumably 1902. A little soiling and finger smudging (probably by typesetters), else about fine. Each page lightly rubberstamped with the name of Harvard Graduates' Magazine where we assume it appeared. The team's season was marred by injuries and disqualifications of players but with the help of Boston's Cy Young, who worked with the pitchers, and "Wee Willie" Keeler of Brooklyn, who worked with the hitters, the team went 21-3. Wendell was an early contributor to the Harvard Lampoon and went on to become an important educator. His course in English Composition at Harvard was an influence on a great many writers, and the textbook that he developed was the standard college text for decades. He is credited with being the first Harvard Professor to offer American Literature as an object of systematic historical and critical study. Baseball manuscripts of this vintage are uncommon. .

Souvenir. Acis and Galatea Masque of Love

London: The Purcell Operatic Society,, 1902. As Produced at the Great Queen Street Theatre, March 10th, 1902. By Martin Shaw and Gordon Craig. Perfect bound. Original brown wrappers printed in black. 19 plates by Edward Gordon Craig, of which 1 is tipped-in on brown paper. Wrappers rubbed and creased along the edges, a few small spots to lower wrapper, text leaves faintly toned but plates clean. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression of this souvenir booklet produced to accompany Gordon Craig's second foray into theatre design, the 1902 Purcell Operatic Society production of Acis and Galatea. As the son of superstar actress Ellen Terry, Craig had grown up in the theatre and acted from the time he was a child. During the 1890s he became friends with the artists James Pryde and William Nicholson, who encouraged him to take up wood engraving, which he embraced "wholeheartedly, with a boyish, breathless, energy… This spontaneous, affectionate approach to creativity was an aspect of his character that articulated his entire life, embracing also the tone of his writing and his theatre design" (ODNB). Though he had retired from acting in 1897, Craig still longed for the stage, and was able to combine his theatrical and artistic passions by working as a theatre designer. "His first production, Dido and Aeneas (1900) for the Purcell Society at the Hampstead Conservatoire, was revolutionary… This production was followed by Handel's Acis and Galatea (1902) at the Great Queen Street Theatre, where it was described by Granville Barker as 'an ever-shifting maze of colour, form, and motion'. Haldane McFall observed to Craig that the colours in the first act were 'good enough to eat'" (ODNB). This is a particularly attractive copy of the Acis & Galatea souvenir programme, a scarce and fragile publication that includes 19 plates of theatre and costume designs by Gordon Craig from the beginning of his legendary career as a theatre designer.

        The Book of the Child

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1902. First edition. Large squarish folio. Original color tinted paper covered boards, beige cloth spine. Cover insert on front and back by Smith, seven full page color plates, three by Jessie Willcox Smith and four by Elizabeth Shippen Green. Six headpiece drawings in orange and black by Smith, six by Green. First and only edition (except for an English edition of lesser quality printed after this release) of what is universally considered Smith's greatest book, both in size and color and composition, produced in colaboration with Elizabeth Shippen Green at the starting point of both artist's graphic art prowess. The book is noteworthy on many accounts. It was the largest colorplate book for children issued in the United States (with a few minor exceptions), it was printed by the acclaimed and accomplished color process leader, Charles W. Beck, Jr., who would subsequently join with Smith on a number of other books. Finally, the book stands out as a highpoint in compositional genius, artfully combining the complementary skills of two leading illustrators of the period in large format book for children.

        YOUTH

1902. [a fine copy] A Narrative. And Two Other Stories. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1902. 32 pp ads dated Oct 1902. Original light green cloth decorated in black. First Edition. Although "Youth" gets top billing on the title page and binding, this book is sought largely for one of the "two other stories": the first appearance in book form of "Heart of Darkness," Conrad's classic tale of a journey up the Congo -- into the darkness of the jungle and of man's primal instincts. Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film "Apocalypse Now" placed the same character, Kurtz, in Vietnam War-era Cambodia.~This copy has the October ad catalogue, which is the earlier state (some copies are dated November). Condition is FINE, with the light green cloth unusually clean and the spine gilt still remarkably bright (the spine is almost-imperceptibly sunned). Typically this book turns up with the cloth severely soiled and bubbled, so this copy constitutes a remarkable survival. Provenance: bookplate of Ingle Barr, the noted Californian collector; penciled signature of Walter E. Smith, the bibliographer of Conrad. Cagle A7a.1; one of the "Modern Library 100". Housed in a (slightly worn) calf-backed slipcase with inner felt-lined chemise.

        Art of Walter Crane

London: George Bell and Sons, 1902. Hard Cover. Walter Crane. Walter Crane. Hard Cover. FIRST TRADE EDITION. This is still the best and most comprehensive work on Crane';s art, encompassing his illustrations, paintings, and decorative works. There are 8 photogravure plates, 24 full page colored plates, and over 100 other illustrations of his paintings, wall paper designs, and book illustrations. There are also two inserted facsimile leaves from The Story of the Glittering Plain published by the Kelmscott Press. It was the only Kelmscott Press title illustrated by Crane, despite his close friendship with fellow-Socialist William Morris. The book begins with a chapter discussing Morris';s influence on Crane';s ideas of Socialism and art. A very good small folio bound in the original blue-green pictorial cloth, with the cover design and spine printed in black and gilt. The covers show wear, with slight fraying at edges, brief spotting, and the front hinge slightly cracked. The interior is quite clean and bright save for some very light aging to margins and a small brown stain on one of the color illustrations and its facing page. Altogether a very nice copy of this rather scarce book. 138 pages. ILL/042210.

A very good copy in the publisher's original green cloth, with only slightly dimmed gilt lettering on the spine, some wear to the spine and corners, with minor offsetting on the front and back end papers, spine starting to crack at pages 80/81 and 288/289, although still fully stable and intact, with spotting along the page edges, otherwise clean pages. A collection of three short novels, this volume contains "Heart of Darkness" and "The End of the Tether" in addition to "Youth: a Narrative." The first two novels, both of which had been published separately prior to this publication, feature Conrad's reoccurring character Charles Marlow, who often serves as the author's alter-ego, and confront the dichotomy of East and West. "Youth" is narrated by Marlow and tells the story of a young Western man's first trip to the East, while "Heart of Darkness" tells of Marlow's job as an ivory transporter on the Congo River in colonized Central Africa. The progression of the main character's age continues in "The End of the Tether" which tells of the Captain Whalley as he spends his old age sailing. Together, the three volumes examine the different stages of life and the effect of the collective society on an individual's life.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        The Book of the Child

Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York 1902 - Large squarish folio.
