      K. Geselchaft der Wissenschaften, Göttingen 1902 - First edition, the rare offprint issue, of Hilbert?s partial solution to the fifth of his famous list of 23 problems, proposed in 1900, that he viewed as important in guiding the development of mathematics in the next century. Hilbert also gives in this work the first rigorous definition of a ?manifold,? a notion that would play a central role in twentieth century mathematics and physics. This paper is a further development of the ideas in his great book Grundlagen der Geometrie (1899), an "influential work that led by its axiomatic method to a new thinking in all mathematical fields in the 20th century" (Michael Toepell in Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p. 710). The present paper was appended to the second edition of Grundlagen der Geometrie, published in 1903. "Hilbert?s interest in the foundations of geometry turned his attention to what became known as the "space problem" of Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), a distinguished physiologist and physicist who in 1868 proposed to deduce the geometrical nature of space from observed facts of experience having to do with the properties of mobile rigid bodies. Using calculus, he argued that his facts lead to the conclusion that metric relations in space correspond either to Euclidean geometry or to the geometry of Lobachevsky. In 1887 Poincaré used Lie algebra techniques to solve the analog of Helmholtz?s problem in two dimensions, and Lie (1890) did the same in n dimensions. Hilbert questioned the necessity of assuming, as was done by Helmholtz and his successors, the differentiability of the transformations they considered, a sine qua non if one were to solve the problem using Lie?s theory. In particular, the assumption that the group is generated by infinitesimal transformations did not fit in easily or naturally with the other geometrical axioms. Hilbert wondered whether this assumption might actually follow as a consequence of the continuity of the transformations defining the rigid motions, together with the group property and the other axioms of geometry. Thus in his famous lecture on mathematical problems Hilbert posed as his fifth problem the more general question as to what extent Lie?s theory, with its differentiability assumptions, could be recovered from seemingly weaker continuity assumptions about the transformations of the group and their multiplication. "Hence there arises the question whether, through the introductions of suitable new variables and parameters, the group can always be transformed into one with differentiable defining functions; or whether at least with the help of certain simple assumptions a transformation is possible into groups admitting Lie's methods." "Shortly thereafter, Hilbert himself dealt with this problem within the limited context of the analogue of Helmholtz?s problem for the plane. Here we find the first attempt to deal with continuous groups by topological means. Hilbert stressed the fact that his methods of proof were completely different from Lie?s, that he would mainly use the concepts of Cantor?s theory of point sets and the Jordan curve theorem for the plane. Of course, the context of Hilbert?s topological approach to groups was a special and limited one, but it showed that results could be achieved and suggested the possibility of doing something similar with respect to the formidable fifth problem. it should be noted that in seeking to characterize the plane as a two-dimensional manifold, Hilbert introduced the approach that eventually led (through Weyl) to the modern concept of a manifold. "These stipulations," Hilbert wrote, "contain for the case of two dimensions, it seems to me, the rigorous definition of what Riemann and Helmholtz designated by ?multiply extended manifold? and by Lie ?number manifold? and which is at the basis of their entire investigation" (T. Hawkins, in History of Topology, I. M. James (ed.), pp. 175-6). Hilbert?s fifth problem was finally solved in full generality by Andrew Gleason, Deane [Attributes: First Edition]

        The River War

Here is a finely bound first edition, first printing of Churchill's second book.  This first edition is notable for a number of reasons. First, aesthetically it is lavish, each of the two large volumes printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans.  Second, from a collector's standpoint it is scarce; the publisher released only 2,646 copies of this beautiful edition, and this number includes both second and third printings. Third, bibliographically it is notable that this first edition is the *only* unabridged edition printed to this day. In 1902 Churchill (now a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons.  All of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text.  Last but not least, the text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance.  As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of the British Army.  These books offer us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century in a distinctly 19th century world.  Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army.  This work and in particular this edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon.  This first printing set features unusually clean contents finely bound by Bayntun in dark green half morocco over khaki cloth boards with marbled endpapers and gilt top edges.  The bindings feature gilt decorated raised spine bands, gilt ruled spine compartments and gilt rule transitions.  The bindings remain square and tight with sharp corners and are about very good overall, with some scuffing to the cloth boards, trivial wear at extremities, and discrete 1.5 inch splits at the lower rear Volume I hinge and upper front Volume II hinge.  The contents are notably bright, clean, and crisp for this edition.  We note only a few, trivial instances of spotting within and on the fore edges.  All illustrations, maps, and plans are present and pristine, as are the frontispiece tissue guards.  During careful collation we noted the oval ink stamp of "Royal Scottish Geographical Society" discretely applied to the verso of a few of the Volume I folding maps and the verso of a single Volume II folding map.  We find no other previous ownership marks.  Bibliographic reference; Cohen A2.1.b, Woods/ICS A2(a.1), Langworth p.29.

        SALT-WATER BALLADS

1902. [with a signed letter] London: Grant Richards, 1902. Original blue cloth. First Edition of Masefield's first book, which consisted of only 500 copies. The title, chosen by the publisher, unfortunately led to comparisons with Kipling and his "Barrack-Room Ballads" (whose verse Masefield "hated") -- especially as both poets used the vernacular in their ballads. In Masefield's opening poem~he proclaimed that he had no intention of glorifying heroism or imperialism; his concern was with the oucasts, the despised, the despairing. [Babington Smith]~Sadly, though Masefield would live 65 more years, SALT-WATER BALLADS is regarded by most as his best work; it includes his best-known poem, "Sea-Fever" (in all subsequent printings, the first line would read "I must go down...").~This copy is about as fine as this book gets (very light foxing on a few leaves); atypically, the spine of this copy is not discolored. Loosely inserted in this copy is a typed letter signed by Masefield, one page undated, to a Major Rutter, regarding the use of a quotation from one of his poems. Simmons 1; Wight 1; Handley-Taylor p. 27. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case.
