"A la Memoire de Rossini." Original large lithograph by Henri Fantin- Latour (1836-1904)

. Dated the day that Rossini's remains were brought to and interred in Florence, "23 Juin 1902 Florence," in the stone at lower left and signed by the artist both in the stone and at lower right. Sheet size 470 x 642 mm., image size 382 x 380 + ca. 90 x 62 mm. portrait of Rossini (a "remarque") to right margin. Small tear to blank right margin; hinged to mat at upper corners of verso. In very good condition overall.. We believe the edition of this print to have been limited to 150 copies (50 on china paper, 100 on Japon) plus 20 trial proofs. The present print is, in all likelihood, a proof, evidenced by the presence of the remarque and also the faint suggestion of additional lettering in the stone at the upper margin. Rare. Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer, well-known for his portraits of Parisian artists and writers.

The War In South Africa. Its Cause and Conduct

London, Smith Elder. 1902., 1902. First Edition. 8vo. Original publisher's paper wraps. A 156 page booklet, beautifully clean and unmarred by the passage of time over such a fragile object. Light toning to text block, otherwise clean and delightful. A charming survival of a scarce item. Conan Doyle certainly was familiar with the subject of the Boer War; In 1900 he traveled to South Africa to serve as a doctor in a medical unit treating British troops. After his return he researched and wrote 'The Great Boer War'. and in the 1902 publication 'The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct', Doyle responded to all of the charges leveled against the British; he declared that the 'concentration camps' were really refugee camps that the government of Great Britain was duty bound to create; housing was needed for the women and children displaced during the war- he admitted that mortality rates in the camps was high, but pointed out however, that this was due to disease rather than bad treatment; many British troops died similarly so Doyle reasoned that civilians in the camps were treated at least as well as Britain treated her troops. The book was a success; it was widely read and public opinion about Britain's Boer War softened. As a result of this contribution to his country's welfare Conan Doyle received a Knighthood from King Edward VII. Green and Gibson; A Bibliography of Arthur Conan Doyle.

"Spring Showers, the Sweeper", Original Photogravure from CAMERA NOTES, Volume V, No. 3 (January 1902)

1902. More than any other photographer Stieglitz successfully used the photogravure process to promote the acceptance of photography as an art form. "Spring Showers, the Sweeper" is almost painterly in its romanticized portrayal of New York City at night. Original photogravures from CAMERA NOTES are quite scarce, but we now have 50 of them by Stieglitz, Gertrude Kasebier, Francis Benjamin Johnston, Robert Demachy, Horsley Hinton, Rudolf Eickemeyer, Frank Eugene, William B. Post, Clarence H. White, and others. Please inquire.. Fine. 6 1/8" X 2 1/2".

Berlin, [Circa 1902-1904]. [1904].. [1904].. Good. - sc - An 11-1/4 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide soft-ground drypoint etching in dark brown, as measured from the plate marks, on 13-3/4 inch high by 10- 1/4 inch wide dark buff colored paper. One of the most famous portraits of the great Austrian composer, the image sensitively depicts Gustav Mahler in profile. The finely etched portrait of Mahler&#39;s face rests on the line drawn torso. Titled and dated "Gustav Mahler, ... Wien 1902" by the artist in pencil at bottom left, the portrait is additionally inscribed in German by Orlik to the German art historian Max Jakob Friedlander across the bottom and signed in full "Emil Orlik" in May of 1920: "... GehRat Friedlander mit [?] dank fur alle freundlichkeit / Emil Orlik / mai 1920". [Geheimrat, or "privy councillor", was a title Friedlander gained during the German empire]. The outer border is of a lighter shade as the print is somewhat darkened. There is a tiny chip out from the top left corner of the sheet and 2 short tears and a chip to the right edge of the print, not affecting either the image nor the inscription. The two tears are reinforced with archival tape from the verso with two small pieces of archival mounting tape also present at the top of the verso. The image is slightly soiled with a very few small dark spots and a tiny indentation to the paper, hidden by Mahler&#39;s dark hair. <p>One of the most important and admired portraits of Mahler (1860-1911) created at the height of Mahler&#39;s career. It was printed in 1902-1904 in single copies on various papers.

Being a Faithful Account of Excruciating Sorrow and wherein is particularly shown how the spacious corridors, ante-rooms, back porch and pantry of Bachelor's Hall became damp, moist & unpleasant, from the many divers tears that leaked from umbrella racks and cus-pitoons upon Charles Mac Rae's Resignation. [Alternate title]: An Epithalamium for Bachelors: For Twenty Years a Household Remedy. [Cover title]: Needles and Pins, [Needles and Pins], Open the covers, And Trouble Begins

The Sign of the Stein, [No place 1902 - String-tied wrappers in hand-painted canvas dustwrapper. 32mo. (5" x 4.75"). (16)pp. Light edgewear and rubbing, near fine in near fine dustwrapper with a modest stain on the rear panel. Artist's engraved business card laid in with a manuscript presentation. A wonderful and wonderfully funny hand-lettered and hand-illustrated book by Walter Jack Duncan, celebrating Charles Mac Rae's courtship of his fiancee, his dwindling days of bachelorhood, his impending marriage, and the horrifying spectre of babies, with just the right touch of sophomoric humor one would expect from a talented 21 year old in 1902. Every page is embellished or illustrated in a most pleasing manner reminiscent of W.W. Denslow. Walter Jack Duncan was a noted illustrator born in Indianapolis in 1881. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City with John H. Twachtman, and illustrated for the popular magazines of the period: *The Century Magazine*, *Scribner's*, *McClure's*, and *Harper's Monthly Magazine*. He also served as an official artist with the A.E.F. during World War I and illustrated many books, including several by Christopher Morley. A lovely production, suitable for reprinting.         The Passing

1902. Original drawing by the great American illustrator, Harrison Fisher This superb drawing of a handsome young woman swinging a golf club is undoubtedly the title page drawing for a story in one of the many illustrated magazines Fisher drew for. Known particularly for his portrayals of beautiful women, Fisher here renders flawlessly the calm concentration of the nicely turned out young golfer, as well as her fashionable, Edwardian attire. Harrison Fisher was one the leading lights in the "golden age of American illustration" that includes Howard Pyle, N.C.Wyeth, Charles Dana Gibson, Maxfield Parrish and others whose book and story illustrations were qualitatively much finer art than the stories were literature. He is best known for nearly twenty consecutive years of Cosmopolitan covers with their intriguing portraits of hopeful young maidens and loving couples. Pen and ink illustration on irregularly shaped paper, two repaired tears upper right, mild soiling.

The Raven by Quarles. Done Into Print & Decorated by Robert H. Perdue. With an Introduction by Joseph Leon Gobeille.

Done Into Print & Decorated by Robert H. Perdue at Cleveland, Ohio, MCM & II. "This edition is limited to ninety three signed copies of which this is number 19 [signed]: Robert H. Perdue". 1902 - 7 7/8 inches x 10 1/2 in., signed and numbered limitation page with onionskin/tissue paper overlay, printed in red-brown; design title-page with the overlay; two page introduction by Joseph Leon Gobeille; six design border illustrations printed in black with the red-brown printed border illustrations on onionskin paper overlays loosely inserted; with printed text of The Raven; copyright page. 27 pp. Printed on thin, japan vellum type paper, with the overlays printed on a very thin tissue type paper; sewn into cream-colored paper card covers, with plain, thin japan vellum type paper wrappers over the covers. Outer covers show some age-related tanning, chipping to the paper wrapper of the spine; the overlays to the limitation page and title-page show some slight edge wear with dusting, very light creases. Each overlay is meant to lay flat, facing the black illustration. Very scarce illustrated item, done in the Art Nouveau style, with some Aubrey Beardsley-like details; and produced in Cleveland Ohio. A few words from the introduction, written by a book collector and early member of the Rowfant Club, Joseph Leon Gobeille: Mr. Robert Hartley Perdue, while claiming no extraordinary knowledge of POEsy, is an ardent admirer of these children of mystery [Poe's poems]. In his leisure hours he has made a pen-and-ink folio of the "Raven", using "Quarles's" original lines as a foundation for his labours. Later he made four replicas for bibliophile friends. Mr. Perdue drew his borders as Fancy and Imagination dictated, and incidently answered some questions which were not truly met by Dore, or any other of our poet's distinguished illustrators. I mention one. How could the shadow of the raven fall upon the floor as pictured by the artists? The lamp is on the table, the bird on the bust of Pallas high above the point of light. Mr. Perdue solves the problem-for his light is in the hall beyond, shining obliquely down through the transom and naturally throws the shadow on the floor where Poe saw it. [-] At the solicitation of the writer, who has in his library No. 1 of the original folios, Mr. Perdue consented to the reproduction of his drawings in a different size. With him it has been a labour of pleasure and study; without emoulument or honorarium, and every bibliophile and lover of Poe will give him cheer and compliment for his consent to publish his embellishments for the best loved and most characterictic of Poe's poems.         The Cruise of the Dazzler (St. Nicholas Magazine for Young Folks, Volume XXIX, Number 9)

The Century Company, Union Square, New York 1902 - In Very Good+ condition. Oversized cream-colored wraps printed in orange and black. Pps. 770 - 863 of volume XXIX. This magazine is in excellent, clean condition with a few faint specks and with modest wear at the spine-ends and at the edges of the wraps. The text is quite clean and bright; no previous ownership markings. The binding is sound. Published in July of 1902, this magazine which includes an abridgement of 'The Cruise of the Dazzler,' (twenty-eight pages with double-columns of text), actually preceeded the hardcover first edition by three months (Century would publish the book in October of that year under the St. Nicholas books imprint). This is part of the magazine's series of long-stories-complete-in-one-issue. A rare and intriguing item for the London collector, being the first publication of his first novel (following early collections of short stories). ".Joe Bronson, dissatisfied and unhappy in school, decides to run away to sea. He falls in with the infamous 'bay pirates,' those some-time fishermen and oyster dredgers who, in reality, used their boats as convenient transport to rob business along the San Francisco bay at the turn of the century. It is readily and quite soon apparent to Joe that perhaps school isn't quite so bad after all; and after befriending 'Frisco Kid,' another young member of the crew they finally are able to cast off the shackles to 'French Pete,' the captain of the Dazzler and restart their lives." Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded.
