Autograph Letter, Signed, to Frederic Schiller Lee, June 10, 1902.

1902 - "Dear Lee, I write to you in regard to a small Fellowship, 100 per ann. which we have at the College here, and Dr. Woodworth, Instructor in Physiology, who some weeks ago wrote an excellent letter to me regarding possibility of work here. The Fellowship, which was until Monday last expected not to be vacant for another year to come, is now known to be no longer required by the present holder, who would if he had wished it certainly have been reelected for a second year. But family matters call him unavoidably away. I am therefore delighted to propose Dr. Woodworth's name for the post, and shall do so at end of this month unless I hear from him to the contrary. I think that you probably know of him, & possibly sufficiently to (should my letter to him miscarry from insufficient address) kindly communicate with him to let him know that I shall be pleased to propose his name, & that in that case he can practically count on receiving the appointment. I am writing to him by this post, & have cabled to him, but am not sure of his address being fully enough. Now I must apologise for troubling you on this. I should like a point further, namely a word from yourself about Dr. Woodworth. With kind regards, I am yours C. Sherrington." Charles S. Sherrington shared the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1932 with with Edgar Adrian “for their discoveries regarding the functions of neurons.” [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Doubleday, Page, New York 1902 - First edition thus, illustrated with photographs by Henry Trosh (originally published without illustrations in 1900). Title page foxed, modest wear at the extremities, a very good plus copy. The author's third book, and the first to be published under her own name. This is the DEDICATION COPY Inscribed to her younger sister and closest friend: "Rebe Gordon Glasgow from Ellen Glasgow." The printed dedication is: "To Rebe Gordon Glasgow." Ellen Glasgow was the ninth and Rebe the tenth and last of the Glasgow children. Along with their slightly older brother Frank, the three siblings formed an extraordinarily strong unit, bonding together against the general unhappiness in their household, especially their mother's madness. Rebe read and critiqued Ellen's earliest work, and was almost certainly the unmarried Ellen's closest friend throughout her life. See this book in 3D on our site. The Golliwogg's Air-Ship

Longmans, Green & Co., London 1902 - 29 full page and one double page spread full colour illustrations plus smaller sepia illustrations on the other text pages. Story line follows Golliwogg and Sarah Jane, Peg, Meg and Midget as they build an airship, decide what clothes they should wear to fly in it and then take a rather calamitous journey. Wonderful example from the Golliwog series of books. Written by mother Bertha and illustrated by daughter Florence (1873-1922) who was born in the U.S. and worked in the U.K. There were 12 Golliwogg books written between 1896 - 1909, this is the 6th of those books. The word Golliwogg, which is no longer considered a socially acceptable word, originated from these books and is listed in the dictionary. Upton illustrated other children's books (see the Vege-men's Revenge for example) and was an accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London. Condition: Binding: Corners worn, edges rubbed in parts. 3 small (1mm) holes in backstrip. The first quire is a bit loose but the overall binding is intact, as are the endpapers. There was a strip of tape between the first quire and the free front end paper, this has been removed. Interior: Very bright and clean. N.B. The photo may appear as if the cover has a stripe running vertically across the cover of the book, this is due to the fact the book was too wide for me to scan as one image and the photo is a merging of two files. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 2. April 1902.. 3 SS. Gr.-4to.

First edition, first (and probably only) printing. Original thin tan cardboard wraps with an Edmund Dulac drawing and title design in dark brown on the front cover. The reverse of the half title page has this note "Cinq exemplaires de cet ouvrage tires a part sur japon sont hors commerce", while the half title page has a presentation inscription from Touny-Lerys (a pseudonym for Toulouse poet Marcel Marchand) dated 1908. The paper in this book is smooth and thick enough to be japon, but without another copy to compare one hesitates to claim this as one of the 5 copies not to be sold, although combined with the author's presentation inscription "a M Aubrie Leuf bien cordialement Touny-Lerys" it makes for a fairly compelling case. The pages are slightly tanned from age but are otherwise clean. The wrappers are covered with a complete tissue cover which is probably not original to the book, but except for very slight chips at the ends of the spine the very fragile covers are in exceptionally well preserved condition and thus were no doubt protected in some fashion. This, the first published work of literature containing Dulac's work, is a rare and elusive work cited by Hughie (#3) based on a copy of the cover only and thus with only an estimated (1901) date of publication and without further bibliographical information about the book itself ("The cover art by Dulac is probably the only work in the book by him. No date is known, but stylistically the work appears to be from his student days in Toulouse."). Dulac would have been 20 the year this publication appeared. Our Forest Home

Gazette Printing and Publishing Co., Montreal 1902 - Hardcover, VERY GOOD PLUS, Octavo, 6î x 9î, ([8], 300pp, xci appendices). Original green cloth gilt titles, no owner names or other markings. Faint age toning to the end papers and the title page. Title page small rough paper mark about 1/2". Six plates inserted - Frontis Frances Stewart at 72, Old Letters, Mr. Stewart, An early Sketch of Peterborough, Peterborough in Early Days and The Old Log House. A very nice copy of an uncommon title.Being Extracts from the Correspondence of the Late Frances Stewart. Compiled and Edited by Her Daughter E.S. Dunlop. Second edition, with much added correspondence added (first was in 1889). A scarce family copy of an important record of early settlement. , The Stewart's immigrated from Ireland to settle on the Otonabee River in Douro Township in 1822. The Stewarts were among the first European families to settle in the Peterborough- Lakefield region in the first half of the nineteenth century and to make a go of it; their neighbours included the Traills, Moodies, and Stricklands. "The book is full of the day-to-day life of the family, the way in which the children of the first generation suffered as they were drawn into the laborious life of the farm, the easing of strain with the coming of additional settlement (the founding of Peterborough in 1825), and the later scattering of the children to new and more settled homes." - Story, Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature. Dunlop, Eleanor (nee Stewart), 1819-1907, was the second daughter of Thomas and Frances Stewart. In 1845, "Ellen," as her close friend Catharine Parr Traill called her, married Charles Dunlop (1817-1906), a successful Otonabee farmer. Ellen, with Catharine's assistance, edited Frances Stewart's letters for Our Forest Home (Toronto, 1902
