Diary and Correspondence of John Evelyn

London - George Bell and Sons 1902 - The diaries of writer John Evelyn, which are a valuable historical source for information on life in seventeenth-century England. Evelyn's diaries or Memoirs are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time (he witnessed the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666). Evelyn and Pepys corresponded frequently and much of this correspondence has been preserved. Also including the correspondences of Charles I and Sir Edward Nicholas, and Sir Edward Hyde and Sir Richard Browne. With forty-five plates throughout, including frontispieces to each volume. Complete in four volumes. Ex-libris bookplate of Viotti E. G. Churcher to front pastedowns. Condition: In half-calf bindings. The Atom and the Molecule.American Chemical Society, 1916.

First edition, the extremely rare offprint issue, of the "paper proposing that the chemical bond was a pair of electrons shared or held jointly by two atoms" (DSB), later called the 'covalent bond' by Irving Langmuir. "This remarkable and revolutionary paper laid the foundation for much of our present day understanding of two fundamental concepts of chemistry: the chemical bond and molecular structure. It was, without a doubt, one of the most influential chemistry papers ever published... The enormous influence [Lewis] has had on our understanding of these two essential concepts of chemistry is only equalled by that of Linus Pauling, who acknowledged his great indebtedness to Lewis by dedicating his famous book The Nature of the Chemical Bond to him" (Gillespie & Robinson, p. 87). On p. 5 of his book, Pauling wrote that Lewis's paper "forms the basis of the modern electronic theory of valence." This offprint is extremely rare: OCLC list copies at Yale Medical Library and Lilly Library only (the latter being Ian Fleming's copy); no copies located in auction records.

"In 1902, while trying to explain the laws of valence to his students, Lewis conceived the idea that atoms were built up of a concentric series of cubes with electrons at each corner. This "cubic atom" explained the cycle of eight elements in the periodic table and was in accord with the widely accepted belief that chemical bonds were formed by transfer of electrons to give each atom a complete set of eight. This electrochemical theory of valence found its most elaborate expression in the work of Richard Abegg in 1904, but Lewis' version of this theory was the only one to be embodied in a concrete atomic model. Lewis' theory did not interest his Harvard mentors, who, like most American chemists of that time, had no taste for such speculation. Lewis did not publish his theory of the cubic atom, but in 1916 it became an important part of his theory of the shared electron pair bond...

"Early in 1916 Lewis published his germinal paper proposing that the chemical bond was a pair of electrons shared or held jointly by two atoms. The cubic atom was an integral part of Lewis' theory of molecular structure. In terms of cubic atoms, the single bond was represented by two cubes with a shared edge, or more simply by double dots, a convention that has been universally adopted.

"According to the octet rule, for a molecule to be stable, each atom must be surrounded by four pairs of electrons that are either shared or free pairs. From this simple idea Lewis derived structures for the halogen molecules, the ammonium ion, and the oxyacids, all of which had proved insoluble for previous theories of valence. Lewis conceived polar bonds simply as unequally shared electron pairs. Since complete transfer of electrons was only the extreme case of polarity, Lewis abandoned his earlier dualistic view. The polar theory became a special case of Lewis' more general and unified theory.

"Lewis' theory of the shared-pair bond received no notice in 1916, and he followed it up with only one further paper on color in molecules with "odd" or unpaired electrons (1916) [an offprint of this paper accompanies the offered item]. His cubic or "static" atom appeared to be inconsistent with the physicists' view of the atom, based mainly on spectroscopy, which demanded moving electrons, as in Bohr's planetary model (1913). The physicists' "dynamic" atom, however, failed to explain the rigid stereochemistry of carbon compounds. This apparent paradox was much disputed in 1919-1923, and Lewis vigorously defended the static atom against Bohr's atom in a lecture to the Physical Society in 1916 and in his book Valence (1923).

"In the spring of 1919 the cubic atom and the shared-pair bond were taken up by Irving Langmuir, who was already famous for his invention of the gas-filled electric lamp and his theory of surface absorption. His dramatic lecture on the new theory of the atom, delivered to the American Chemical Society in April 1919 and often repeated by request elsewhere, suddenly kindled the interest of American chemists. In a series of long papers and lectures in 1919-1921 Langmuir elaborated Lewis' theory so successfully that the Lewis-Langmuir theory, or the Langmuir theory as it was known to many, was talked of everywhere and soon was widely accepted. Lewis was resentful that Langmuir received so much of the credit for the ideas that he had originated. Langmuir always acknowledged his debt to Lewis but felt that he had added enough on his own to warrant the compound name. An exchange of polite but outspoken letters in 1919-1920 probably did not clear the air, but some years later Lewis and Langmuir were again on friendly terms" (DSB).

"In conclusion, it should not be forgotten that in addition to Lewis's enormous contribution to our understanding of chemical bonding, he made several other important and lasting contributions to chemistry, including in particular his pioneering work on thermodynamics, and his work on acid-base theory. He was one of the truly great figures in the history and development of chemistry" (Gillespie & Robinson, p. 97).

R. J. Gillespie & E. A. Robinson, 'Gilbert N. Lewis and the chemical bond: The Electron Pair and the Octet Rule from 1916 to the Present Day,' Journal of Computational Chemistry, Vol. 28, No. 1 (2006), 87-97.. "A la Memoire de Rossini." Original large lithograph by Henri Fantin- Latour (1836-1904)

. Dated the day that Rossini's remains were brought to and interred in Florence, "23 Juin 1902 Florence," in the stone at lower left and signed by the artist both in the stone and at lower right. Sheet size 470 x 642 mm., image size 382 x 380 + ca. 90 x 62 mm. portrait of Rossini (a "remarque") to right margin. Small tear to blank right margin; hinged to mat at upper corners of verso. In very good condition overall.. We believe the edition of this print to have been limited to 150 copies (50 on china paper, 100 on Japon) plus 20 trial proofs. The present print is, in all likelihood, a proof, evidenced by the presence of the remarque and also the faint suggestion of additional lettering in the stone at the upper margin. Rare. Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer, well-known for his portraits of Parisian artists and writers.

The War In South Africa. Its Cause and Conduct

London, Smith Elder. 1902., 1902. First Edition. 8vo. Original publisher's paper wraps. A 156 page booklet, beautifully clean and unmarred by the passage of time over such a fragile object. Light toning to text block, otherwise clean and delightful. A charming survival of a scarce item. Conan Doyle certainly was familiar with the subject of the Boer War; In 1900 he traveled to South Africa to serve as a doctor in a medical unit treating British troops. After his return he researched and wrote 'The Great Boer War'. and in the 1902 publication 'The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct', Doyle responded to all of the charges leveled against the British; he declared that the 'concentration camps' were really refugee camps that the government of Great Britain was duty bound to create; housing was needed for the women and children displaced during the war- he admitted that mortality rates in the camps was high, but pointed out however, that this was due to disease rather than bad treatment; many British troops died similarly so Doyle reasoned that civilians in the camps were treated at least as well as Britain treated her troops. The book was a success; it was widely read and public opinion about Britain's Boer War softened. As a result of this contribution to his country's welfare Conan Doyle received a Knighthood from King Edward VII. Green and Gibson; A Bibliography of Arthur Conan Doyle.

PORTRAIT OF GUSTAV MAHLER. AN ORIGINAL SOFT-GROUND DRYPOINT ETCHING TITLED, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY EMIL ORLIK

Berlin, [Circa 1902-1904]. [1904].. [1904].. Good. - sc - An 11-1/4 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide soft-ground drypoint etching in dark brown, as measured from the plate marks, on 13-3/4 inch high by 10- 1/4 inch wide dark buff colored paper. One of the most famous portraits of the great Austrian composer, the image sensitively depicts Gustav Mahler in profile. The finely etched portrait of Mahler's face rests on the line drawn torso. Titled and dated "Gustav Mahler, ... Wien 1902" by the artist in pencil at bottom left, the portrait is additionally inscribed in German by Orlik to the German art historian Max Jakob Friedlander across the bottom and signed in full "Emil Orlik" in May of 1920: "... GehRat Friedlander mit [?] dank fur alle freundlichkeit / Emil Orlik / mai 1920". [Geheimrat, or "privy councillor", was a title Friedlander gained during the German empire]. The outer border is of a lighter shade as the print is somewhat darkened. There is a tiny chip out from the top left corner of the sheet and 2 short tears and a chip to the right edge of the print, not affecting either the image nor the inscription. The two tears are reinforced with archival tape from the verso with two small pieces of archival mounting tape also present at the top of the verso. The image is slightly soiled with a very few small dark spots and a tiny indentation to the paper, hidden by Mahler's dark hair.
One of the most important and admired portraits of Mahler (1860-1911) created at the height of Mahler's career. It was printed in 1902-1904 in single copies on various papers.
