        The Watcher by The Threshold

London, William Blackwood and Sons 1902., 1902. First Edition. 8vo. Pp 136. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth, titled and ruled in orange and white. top edge trimmed, others uncut. Endpapers browned as usual, some rippling to cloth on spine, corners and joints a little rubbed. Light fraying to spine ends. A very good copy with the 02/02 ads. A splendid and rip-roaring collection of weird and supernatural oddities. A handsome copy of a tricky book, lacking all of the usual damage (chipping to the front board decoration, flattening of the spine, fraying, horrendous bumping, possession by demons etc.) and instead being bright, clean and lovely to look at, a claim that cannot be shared by most books of its distinguished vintage. Most copies of the Hound of The Baskervilles (published in the same year) are considerably less well turned out. Packed with stories of lost tribes of Picts, bizarre behaviour by the otherwise respectable and a fair amount of feverishly guzzled brandy for purely medicinal purposes. Blanchard A13. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [13-319]

1902. [1 of about 60 copies] [Hythe: privately printed for the author by J. Lovick, 1902.] 8 pp, stapled without wrappers as issued. First Separate Edition of this Preface, which consisted of 100 copies (of which 40 were destroyed, according to Conrad). This Preface first appeared in the December 1897 issue of The New Review; Conrad revised that initial version before having this pamphlet printed up five years later, in November 1902. The Preface had not appeared in the book itself (first published in America by Dodd Mead in November 1897, then in Britain by Heinemann in 1898). In fact, as it turned out, Conrad's editor at Heinemann, Sidney Pawling, rejected the Preface for inclusion in their subsequent editions; it was not until 1914 that Doubleday Page included it in an American edition (and would issue this Preface as the booklet JOSEPH CONRAD ON THE ART OF WRITING).~This Preface has come to be known as the closest thing to Conrad's credo as a writer, as an artist. It was~his personal summation of the life of the artist up to 1897 and, in a limited sense, a harbinger of the artist to come after 1897... The Preface served as a literary anchor for Conrad in this early segment of his career... We see, then, feeding into the Preface several overlapping elements: Flaubert, of course; symboliste suggestions and doctrines; [Walter] Pater, with particular reference to [his essay] "Style"; [Henry] James, especially "The Art of Fiction"; a strong post-Wagnerian aesthetic, derived from Wagner's "amalgamation" of the arts; an 1890s language and attitude about aesthetic ideals and artistic elitism; and what was unique, that impressionism which both heightened and lessened in order to make the reader "see" with the peculiar intensity which we call Conradian. [Karl]~This copy is fine except for the inevitable staple rust (the staple itself has been removed, to prevent further damage). Cagle A3f. Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.
