Autograph letter signed in full to "Herr Levy"

      - 2-1/3 pp. of a bifolium. Dated [Berlin]-Charlottenburg, January 23, 1902. In German (with transcription and translation). Regarding a recommendation for the director of the Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, Herr Strunz, and mentioning Strauss's "Singgedicht," Feursnot. Strunz "is looking for some patrons enthusiastic about the arts who could help him materially. Is it very outrageous of me to bother you with this? Since, however, I myself, too, am only guided by purely artistic interest in this enterprise, to which I contribute the greatest sacrifices of time and effort myself, perhaps you will forgive me. I am going to travel to Vienna tomorrow for the premiere of my opera."Creased at folds; four small file holes to blank inner margins filled in with matching paper just slightly affecting several letters. We have been unable to identify Strauss's correspondent with certainty, although it is possible that he is the German composer and patron of the arts, Martin Levy (1836-1911). The Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, an ensemble devoted to contemporary music, was founded by Strauss. Feuersnot ("Fire-Famine"), a "Singgedicht" or "sung poem" in one act to a libretto by Ernst von Wolzogen, was first performed at the Hofoper in Dresden on November 21, 1901; it had its Viennese premiere on January 29, 1902. "Strauss';s second operatic essay was a ribald exercise in snook-cocking. His first opera Guntram had suffered a painful fiasco in Munich, his home town, and Feuersnot was his jovial revenge. That Feuersnot should be appreciated only by scholars was the last thing Strauss intended: for the sake of the dewily attractive, well-shaped score, there is a strong case for reinventing its text in terms as rudely up to date as need be."         COMPLETE WORKS: Edited and Chronologically Arranged on the Basis of the Standard Text, With Certain Additional Materials, and with a Critical Introduction by Charles F. Richardson, Professor of English in Dartmouth College

New York: The Knickerbocker Press for G. P. Putnam's, 1902. 10 volumes. The Arnheim edition, one of 500 numbered sets signed by the publisher. Numerous illustrations on Japan vellum paper, decorations in text by Frederick Simpson Coburn. 8vo, finely bound in vellum and boards, the backs gilt extra and beautifully designed. A well preserved and handsome set. The spines with some mellowing or aging as is usual, the text-blocks clean and in excellent condition. The bindings strong and tight and clean, the corners sharp and in fine condition. A very scarce set, one of the nicest editions of Poe ever published. The Arnheim Book-Lover's Edition includes very impressive illustrations printed on Japan vellum. Each volume has a decorated titlepage and limitation page printed in black and red. It contains all of the poetry and stories for which the author is so well known, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Beyond horror, Poe also wrote satires, humor tales, and hoaxes. For comic effect, he used irony and ludicrous extravagance, often in an attempt to liberate the reader from cultural conformity.

[Doves Press- Association Copy, Emery Walker to His Wife] Paradise Lost [and] Paradise Regained

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1902, 1905. First edition thus. Two Volumes, 4to. Original limp vellum, gilt spines. Superb Association Copy, inscribed from Emery Walker to his wife on the recto of leaf just before titlepage: "to Mary Grace Walker with Emery Walker's best love December 1 1902" and later [just below] "to Lilias and Hugh Fisher [artist] in memory of Mary Grace Walker from Dorothy and Emery Walker 1920." Sir Emery Walker (1851-1933) set up the Doves Press (in 1900) along with the bookbinder T.J. Cobden-Sanderson in 1900. The Doves Press books, with their iconic typography and sparing aesthetic design inspired the revival of private-press printing in the 20th century. After Mary Grace's death, his daughter Dorothy looked after Walker and preserved many of his private papers. Printed in red and black, some foxing to fore-margins at beginning of first volume, original limp vellum, by the Doves Bindery. Spines titled in gilt, uncut, spine of vol.1 soiled and creased with joints partly split and chipped, preserved in attractive board slip-cases with decorated paper. The matching 'set' of "Paradise Lost and Regained" remains quite scarce, and along with this presentation from Emery Walker to his wife, certainly makes this item a lasting rarity.

Memoria Historica, Tecnica y Administrativa de las Obras del Desague del Valle de Mexico 1449 - 1900

Tipografia de la Oficina Impresora de Estampillas, Mexico City 1902 - Large folios (34 x 21.5 cm), 3 volumes, pp xv, frontis., 688; 462; atlas volume of 31 folding maps. Volume one is the history, in five books, bound together, of this vast project of draining the lake on which Mexico City sits, containing numerous full-page plates not numbered in the text. Volume two is a series of appendices to the books, containing documents and references found in the main text volumes: and volume three is a splendid collection of maps and plans, some historical and of two colors, some quite large, and all folding. Gonzalez Obregon (1865 - 1938) was a prominent historian, whose fame rests on his Mexico Viejo and Las Calles de Mexico, which are often encountered; the last named has been translated into English. He appears to have been (at least) the editor of the work. Bound in three-quarter calf over pebbled boards, panelled spine with raised bands and gilt title material. The entire set is very seldom found. No records at auction; OCLC does not list a complete set. Very nice. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Youth: A Narrative and Two Other Stories

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1902 First edition, first issue with earliest ads (dated "10/02"). Publisher's green cloth, front board with decorative floral motif and lettering in black, spine lettered in gilt with black flower decal. Very good, with some light rubbing to the extremities, slight lean to the spine, minor toning to the spine and board edges, a few light spots to the page edges, spine very lightly starting at the half-title, otherwise fresh interior. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. Wise 10. A collection of three short novels, this volume contains "Heart of Darkness" and "The End of the Tether" in addition to "Youth: a Narrative." The first two novels, both of which had been published separately prior to this publication, feature Conrad's reoccurring character Charles Marlow, who often serves as the author's alter-ego, and confront the dichotomy of East and West. "Youth," the shortest of the three pieces, is narrated by Marlow and tells the story of a young Western man's first trip to the East, while "Heart of Darkness" tells of the haunting story of Marlowe's work an ivory transporter on the Congo River in colonized Central Africa which led him to meet the shadowy Mr. Kurtz. The progression of the main character's age continues in "The End of the Tether," which tells of Captain Whalley as he spends his old age sailing. Together, the three volumes examine the different stages of life and the effect of society on an individual's life.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Many refer to the "school" of genetics he directed at Cambridge between 1900 and 1910, but few note that Bateson's group consisted primarily of women. Bateson turned to botanists, zoologists, and physiologists associated with Newnham College, Cambridge, for critical assistance in advancing his research program at a time when Mendelism was not yet recognized as a legitimate field of study. Cambridge women carried out a series of breeding experiments in a number of plant and animal species between 1902 and 1910, the results of which provided crucial evidence that both supported and extended Mendel's laws of heredity." - Marsha L. Richmond, "Women in the Early History of Genetics" Isis, Vol. 92, No. 1 (Mar. 2001), 55-90. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/N/A. Octavo.

Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur Amerikanischen Sprach-und Alterthumskunde

A Asher & Co, 1902-09 Berlin - 3 volumes; xxviii+862 pages with two fold out plates and numerous illustrations; xxxvi+1107 pages with numerous illustrations; xxx+729 pages with four maps including frontispiece, 43 plates which one folds out and numerous black and white illustrations. Royal octavo (9 7/8" x 6 3/4"). Bound in half leather with marbled boards. Three of five volumes. First edition. A few general observations on the contents of Gesammelte Abhandlungen are in order. Altogether, the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie, Globus, Science, Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie, Ethnologisches Notisblatt, Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien, Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde (Berlin), and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles, on being reprinted in the various volumes of Gesammelte Abhundlungen, were substantially enlarged and revised by their author. A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes, such as his well-known translations (with copious notes) of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods (Vol. I), his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact (Vol. III), and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada (Vol. III) and Teotihuacan (Vol. V). Breaking them down into categories, to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler's scholarly labors, approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices, 3 to Mexican calendrics, 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics, 3 to mythology, 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics, 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects, 13 to descriptions (always well illustrated) of major ruins, 6 to accounts of archaeological travels, 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory," 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts, 3 to recent ethnography, 3 to Conquest history, I to geography, and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters, which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes, 4 articles deal with North America, 3 with Central America, and 5 with South America (Andean region). The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler's contribution to this field, since, as stated above, his major works here were long monographs, each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. (American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100) Seler was born in Crossen an der Oder, Prussia, on December 5, 1849; attended Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium, Berlin, 1863-1869; attended University of Breslau before serving a year of military duty in 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War; returned to his studies at University of Berlin in 1871 and passed his Oberlehrer examination in 1875; taught science and mathematics until he was forced to resign because of poor health in 1879; moved to Trieste and began studying linguistics, and his interest in Pre-Columbian ethnography and archeology emerged; received his doctorate, University of Leipzig, 1887; director, American Division, Königlichen Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin, 1904-22; his published papers and monographs made fundamental contributions to studies of aboriginal American linguistics, archaeology, native history, and ethnography; died in 1922. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, bookplate on front pastedowns, spines lightly rubbed. A very good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Hound of the Baskervilles

London: George Newnes, Limited, 1902. First edition. Very Good +. First edition in book form after the serial publication in the "Strand Magazine" Aug. 1901 - April 1902. An attractive copy of the book. A Very Good+ copy with some fading to the spine and minor soiling to the cloth. A faint dampstain affects the upper margin of some leaves, noted mostly at the early and late pages. Complete with all sixteen plate (including frontis) by Sidney Paget. "The Hound of The Baskervilles" was the first Holmes story Conan Doyle wrote since Holmes' death eight years before in "The Final Problem." (Although the story was set before Sherlock Holmes' end, its popularity would inspire Doyle to bring back the character entirely in "The Adventure of the Empty House.") "The Hound of The Baskervilles" is set in the Southwestern English countryside and follows a murder that takes place amidst the legend of a cursed, spectral hound. Thought of as the best and most famous of the Sherlock Holmes stories, it appeared on Le Monde's list of the 100 Books of the Century. "The Hound of The Baskervilles" was hugely popular when it was released, lines would form for copies of the The Strand: "to the delight of Greenhough Smith, the magazine's circulation rose by thirty thousand copies." (Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle). Very Good +.
