L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire. Année complète 1902

Bureaux de la Revue, 1902. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1902, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1902, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding Edition Editor at bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, small gilded iron and double gold mesh queue.Douze January to December 1902. Hedges numbers conservées.Chaque number is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Blum ("The eyes I love"), Paul Fort, Henri Ghéon, André Gide ("Oscar Wilde"), Ms. Alphonse Daudet, Walt Whitman, founded in etc.Publication 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine belonging to the first wave of small symbolist journals. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular collaborators, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. L'Ermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time like the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] that deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his symbolist spirit, employees are more interested in poetry than fiction. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, believes that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddling the end of the century aesthetics and poetry avant - garde of the 1910s. - - - Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

        The Watcher by the Threshold

William Blackwood and Sons 1902 - John Buchan - The Watcher by the Threshold -1902 first edition published by William Blackwood and Sons. Unusual catalogue to the rear, the 2/02 is usually cited as the first issue and the 4/02 as the second issue, both of which I have seen several times. This copy has a 64 page catalogue to the rear noted 4/12 to the final page, which I have not encountered before. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's original illustrated blue cloth, which is slightly rubbed, bumped and marked, with fading to the spine and some minor loss of cloth to the top of the spine. The text block is age toned and a little foxed, with a neatly written name to the front pastedown. Buchan's superb collection of weird and supernatural stories, uncommon as a first edition and this copy with the minor bibliographic interest of the rogue catalogue to the rear.       1902. Photos 17 x 23 cm. Card boards 25,5 x 32 cm. 17 photographs mounted on contemporary card boards with hand drawn ink lines framing the images. Four of the photos can be assembled to form two panoramas. The boards are numbered in sequence 1-17. One card board with a couple of tears and breaks and a little loss to the edges, not affecting the photo. Some of the other card boards have small losses to the edges, not affecting the photos. Three photos with small damages to the surface. A couple of photos with minor brown stains. A few unsignificant brown spots here and there. The image areas are overall in nice condition. A serie of photos by the world renowned swedish botanist, carthographer and explorer Per Karl Hjalmar Dusén from his expedition to Serra do Itatiaia in Brazil in 1902, to study the flora of Paraná. Dusén made botanical expeditions to Brazil, Paraguay, Chili, Haiti, Mexico, Cameroon, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, Greenland, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and other places. He participated in Alfred Gabriel Nathorst´s scientific expedition to Greenland (also searching for the lost André expedition) and mapped significant parts of the east Greenland coast. He collected 30.000 mosses in Cameroon and produced an important map of parts of that country. He is viewed as West Africas founder of bryology. He amassed large collections of specimens on his travels. Most of it can be found in the Swedish Museum of Natural History and some in Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba in Brazil. The Herbarium in Curitiba in Paraná is named in his honour. Between his travels he spent time in Kew and Berlin to work on his collections. Each board has manuscript text in ink at the back reading "Fotografier från Serra do Itatiaia i Brasilien, tagna af P. Dusén under en resa från Rio de janeiro i Maj-Juli 1902, sända till K. F. Dusén i Jan. 1903" (Photographs from Serra do Itatiaia in Brazil, taken by P. Dusén during a journey from Rio de Janeiro in May-June 1902, sent to K. F. Dusén in Jan. of 1903.) In addition there are manuscript annotations describing the terrain were the photo was taken and in some cases plants are named that can be seen in the photo. (K. F. Dusén was a cousin and a fellow botanist).

Autograph letter signed ("Rainer Maria Rilke").

Westerwede near Worpswede, 19. III. 1902. - Small 4to. 8 pp. on two bifolia. On stationery with illustrated letterhead. Long, early letter to the Danish writer and editor Poul Levin (1868-1929), announcing the Rilkes' approaching relocation to Paris and the poet's plans to attend the Russian University there. - Also lernen.

Journey to Lhasa and Central Tibet

John Murray, 1902-01-01. Stated 2nd Edition, revised. Hardcover. Good. Bound in publisher's green cloth. Gilt lettered and stamp of the Royal Geographical Society on front cover. Library stamps and markings. 285 pages. 34 illustrations and maps, 6 of which are folding. Large color map of Tibet at rear. Many of the plates are stamped with library stamps on blank side. <br> Sarat Chandra Das (1849-1917) was a Bengali scholar of Tibet. Das has been described as "a traveler, explorer...linguist, a lexicographer, an ethnographer and an eminent Tibetologist." Das was also a British spy. Born in Chittagong, Das trained as an engineer in Calcutta. He became headmaster of the Bhutia Boarding School in Darjeeling. Bhutia was a school for Sikkimese and Tibetan boys, many of who would be trained to fill a special place in the British colonial regime, the role of a Pundit. Das became a "pundit" (and an instructor at the school) for British intelligence. Pundits acted as a network of British-trained operatives who were tasked to make inroads in the foreboding inner regions of Asia where white embassies could not gain entry. Tibet and other inland areas were increasingly gaining attention from competing British, Russian and Chinese economic and strategic interests. Derek Waller speculates that the character of Huree Chunder Mookerjee in Kipling's Kim was based on Das, p.193. As a teacher, Das learned Tibetan to speak with his students. He read the limited books on the region available, notably of Bogle (1773-5) and Manning's travels (1811) to Tibet. Manning and Bogle were the last successful British explorations of Tibet, a nation who steadfastly resisted western intrusion. Das's language ability secured him entry with his colleague, Lama Ugyen Gyasto, to Tashilhunpo monastery in 1879, as the Prime Minister wished to learn Hindi from him. In 1881, Das returned to Tashilhunpo and made his way to Lhasa, Sakya, and the Tsangpo River. There he met with Thupten Gyatso, the 13th Dalai Lama (d. 1933) and returned to Darjeeling with a Yak loaded with over 200 Tibetan manuscripts. After Das was revealed to be a British agent, Tibetan authorities increased restrictions on travelers and the Minister who had sponsored his entry was put to death. What makes Das's expedition so interesting is that he successfully brought back a wealth of information on an unknown land to the larger world. The Tibet that Das glimpsed is now gone, with the passage of history and the destructive forces of modernity and Chinese domination. This book compiles the story of Das's journey, his reports, photographs, diagrams, ethnographic observations, etc of a lost Tibet. Das went on to become an important Tibetan scholar and author an extensive multi-volume dictionary. The British would not successfully return to Tibet until 1903-4, with Colonel Francis Edward Younghusband's exhibition (invasion and massacre of ~5000 Tibetans). (Significantly, Younghusband was the President of the Royal Geographical Society, which notably published the 1902 edition of Das's book. An interesting, and dark connection to Das's legacy.) Editions from later years bear the revised title "Jesus Christ had Negro blood in his veins: the wonder of the twentieth century. Argues that interracial marriage has existed since time immemorial regardless of government laws, and that "God the Father allowed the blood of the black man to enter the veins of His Son, Jesus Christ." After citations of Biblical evidence, goes on to protest the racism of early 20th century America and to argue for equality. States that while people sneer at Blacks and Jews for having been persecuted over the years, both groups have outlasted their persecutors. Concludes that suicidal and homicidal behavior are traits more prevalent among whites, showing a stronger mentality in the Black man, who "bears his troubles and waits upon his God...

17 photographs of Serra do Itatiaia in Brazil]

1902. 1902 - Photos 17 x 23 cm. Card boards 25,5 x 32 cm. 17 photographs mounted on contemporary card boards with hand drawn ink lines framing the images. Four of the photos can be assembled to form two panoramas. The boards are numbered in sequence 1-17. He participated in Alfred Gabriel Nathorst s scientific expedition to Greenland (also searching for the lost André expedition) and mapped significant parts of the east Greenland coast. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        WHERE THERE IS NOTHING

1902. Fine. YEATS, W. B. WHERE THERE IS NOTHING. A Drama in Five Acts. [N.p.] 1902. First American edition, second issue privately printed for John Quinn in a limited, large paper edition of 30 numbered copies. This copy is number nine and is signed by Yeats on the title-page. This edition was printed from the same type as the first issue, also printed by Quinn in a limited edition of 10-15 copies to secure copyright, only without the publisher's name on the title-page and imprint on verso, and with some errors corrected. [2, viii], 99[-102]. Octavo, 9 9/16 x 6 7/16 in., publisher's binding of pale green paper boards with white labels printed in black on upper board and spine, untrimmed and unopened; duplicate spine label inserted loose at front. A near fine copy, showing a touch of wear to paper at heel, crown and fore corners, and some sunning along the top front board and edges (where the glassine had been missing) else clean and fresh. Housed in a custom clamshell box with most of the publisher's damaged glassine wrapper laid-in. Initially WHERE THERE IS NOTHING was to have been a collaborative effort between W. B. Yeats and George Moore; but their union was a brief one, with Yeats deciding to continue alone. When Moore claimed to have written a novel based upon the scenario they had discussed together and threatened to get an injunction blocking Yeats from publishing his play in England, Yeats acted. Feeling strongly that each man was free to use his own contributions to the story, he rushed to complete - and publish - his five-act play: it first appeared as a newspaper supplement to THE UNITED IRISHMAN; then John Quinn secured the American copyright by arranging for a small edition for deposit with the New York firm John Lane, as well as arranging for this limited large-paper edition (as detailed above). The American issues contain a dedication to Lady Gregory, dated September 19, 1902, which does not appear in any subsequent edition. (Although Lady Gregory did reprint some, but not all, of it in OUR IRISH THEATRE, 1914.) (Wade 43; Yeats, DRAMATIS PERSONAE 1896-1902; Reid, THE MAN FROM NEW YORK, pp. 8-11).

Just So Stories For Little Children.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1902. With illustrations by the author. Large octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, titles to front board and spine in black and white. With 22 plates by the author. Small bookplate to front pastedown. Spine and board edges faded, lettering and decorations flaked away to spine, light foxing to contents. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, in the first issue binding, of Kipling's famous collection of 12 stories and 12 poems including "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "How the Leopard Got His Spots." The white blocking to the spine and boards famously failed to adhere on the first issue binding, with the result that most copies now lack significant portions of it; the paint formula was changed for the second issue.

Kinetische Theorie des Warmegleichgewichtes und des zweiten Hauptsatzes der Thermodynamik (Kinetic theory of heat equilibrium and the Second Law of Thermodynamics).

Johann Ambrosius Barth, Leipzig 1902 - Presentation Offprint from Annalen der Physik, Series 4, Volume 9; pp. 417-433. First Edition Offprint. Weil 3, Boni 3. NOTE: Weil incorrectly lists this article as being on pages 417-435. Boni has the correct pagination, as above. This is the first of three papers published by Einstein in 1902-1904 (Weil/Boni 3-5) that recycled and expanded the work he had done in his rejected doctoral dissertation regarding statistical mechanics. "The first paper [Weil 3] used the atomic theory of gases to derive the famous second law of thermodynamics, correcting Boltzmann's alleged mistakes along the way. No sooner had he finished his paper however, than he set out again in a second paper [Eine Theorie der Gurndlagen der Thermodynamik], to derive the law again in a more general and powerful way that would apply to mechanical systems, not just gases. Then, after one of his patent office colleagues pointed out a flaw in his reasoning, he produced yet another [Weil 5], even more general, paper that extended his statistical legerdemain even to electromagnetic fields It took Albert two years to finish these three papers and publish them in the Annalen der Physik, where the last one appeared in the sping of 1904, but they did not set the world of physics on fire. But even if they did not shake up science, the papers had a lasting influence on Albert's style as a scientist. The notion that one could start with a simple fact or supposition, such as the existence of atoms, and construct, on the basis of pure logic, a grand sweeping principle such as the second law of thermodynamics would remain with him for the rest of his life as the very model of what a physical theory should be."         Dichter, Maler und Zeichner (1832-1908): Eigenh. Antwortbrief mit e. U. (\"W. B.\").

Mechtshausen, März 1902. 8°. 1 S., \"[…] Sehr geehrter Herr Trojan! Versand D: 4,00 EUR Autograph, Autographs
