London: Frederick Warne & Co.,, 1902?10. 12 works: 11 sextodecimo, 1 small quarto. Original gilt decorated cloth, pictorial labels to front boards, pictorial endpapers, except: Peter Rabbit bound in yellow cloth lettered red, grey patterned endpapers; Squirrel Nutkin and Tailor of Gloucester in floral cloth with gilt-lettered vellum labels, pictorial endpapers; Pie and the Patty-Pan in pale blue cloth lettered blue, white moiré endpapers. Each book housed in a custom folding case. An excellent set. Some hinges split but holding, a few with light finger-marks to contents, some with contemporary gift inscriptions, a little rubbing to extremities. The Pie and the Patty-Pan with bookplates of H. Bradley Martin and Mildred Greenhill, and misbound at p. 14. Complete set of the first deluxe editions of the Peter Rabbit series. Priced at 1/6- rather than 1/- for the paper-covered books, the deluxe editions went through three iterations before a consistent style was settled upon. The first deluxe binding of Peter Rabbit was issued in two colours, yellow and green. Potter felt this unimpressive, writing, "I thought last year there was not sufficient difference between the two styles of binding ? that if the cloth binding had been more distinctly different, and pretty, there might have been more inducement to buy it." She obtained some samples of patterned cloth from her grandfather's textile printing works: Edmund Potter & Co. of Manchester, one of the largest calico printers in Europe. An art fabric binding, which Potter referred to as "a flowered lavender chintz, very pretty" was selected for the deluxe issues of the Tailor of Gloucester and Squirrel Nutkin in 1903, and vellum labels used for the title and author's name, as it was impracticable to print directly onto the fabric. The following October, a brightly coloured moiré cloth decorated in gilt was chosen for the deluxe issue, coinciding with the publication of Benjamin Bunny and the Two Bad Mice. Potter contributed to the gilt design, noting in a letter to the Warnes that "I will do some sketches of designs for the cover while I am at Melford." This design, with some minor alterations to the gilt decoration, was adopted for the deluxe editions of the rest of the series.

The Foundations of Geometry. Authorised Translation by E. J. Townsend, PH. D. University of Illinois.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., Ltd. 1902 - Octavo. Original ribbed red cloth, spine and front board lettered gilt. Front cover with dampmark, contents unaffected; very short tear to initial leaf with publisher's advertisment; a very good copy. With many figures in the text. First edition in English, the UK issue, co-published with The Open Court Publishing Company of Chicago, of one of the most influential mathematics publications of the 20th century. Hilbert's classical investigation of the logical foundations of geometry was first published in German in 1899. Until this publication, all geometry, including such recent and sophisticated developments as hyperbolic and elliptic geometry, implied an intuitive idea of the concepts 'point', 'line', 'plane', 'between', 'lies on' etc. Hilbert's Foundations was to satisfy the relatively new intellectual necessity of formally defining the status of pure geometry, as a branch of mathematics. Points, lines and planes are mere symbols, and relations between them are no more than formally defined relations between symbols, as stated in the early pages of his essay: "We think of . points, straight lines, and planes as having certain mutual relations, which we indicate by means of such words as 'are situated', 'between', 'parallel', 'congruent', 'continuous', etc. The complete and exact description of these relations follows as a consequence of the axioms of geometry."         Works

1902 - SMOLLETT, Tobias. The Works. New York: George D. Sproul, 1902. Twelve volumes. Octavo, contemporary full crushed green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards with inlaid red and yellow morocco roses, raised bands, richly floral gilt dentelles, red morocco doublures with inlaid white and green morocco flowers, marbled extra endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $5000.Deluxe "Hand-Made Edition" of Smollett's works, number 10 of 150 sets, illustrated with 48 plates (double-suite, one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), very beautifully bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet."Like Richardson and Fielding, [Smollett] was a critic of manners; but being a "˜lousy Scot' and a surgeon to boot he lacked entrée to high society and wrote always as an external observer and critic. A born storyteller, he paid little attention to premeditated effects; his narrative and descriptive gifts were sufficient to keep readers keenly interested and amused". For inventiveness and diversity of episode, vivid particularlity of detail to the point of caricature and energy of style, Smollett is hardly excelled. He is to the 18th-century novel what Hogarth is to painting""a savage realist with an eye for eccentric character, which he discovers in all classes" (Baugh et al., 961-62). This set presents his complete works, including the autobiographical Roderick Random (1748), the Cervantes-inspired Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves (1760-61) and his experimental triumph The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), esteemed as one of "the greatest masterpieces of English fiction" (Baugh et al., 964). Illustrated with four plates in each volume in double-suite (one on mounted Japan tissue; one frontispiece in each volume in color), 48 plates in all. The set is splendidly bound in full morocco, elaborately gilt-tooled with intricate floral designs and bearing floral morocco inlays on the boards. Spines uniformly toned to brown. A fine set, most elegantly bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Just So Stories For Little Children.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1902. With illustrations by the author. Large octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, titles to front board and spine in black and white. With 22 plates by the author. Gift inscription to first blank. Tips a little bumped, some light rubbing to spine ends, a little foxing to endpapers. An excellent, remarkably bright, copy. First edition, first impression, in the second issue binding, of Kipling's famous collection of 12 stories and 12 poems including "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "How the Leopard Got His Spots." The white blocking to the spine and boards famously failed to adhere on the first issue binding, with the result that most copies now lack significant portions of it; the paint formula was changed for the second issue.

Photograph album documenting life in Cuba following the Spanish-American War

Ramon Corral, S. A. Cohner and other Havana photographers, Cuba 1902 - This large album (12" x 15") contains 48 pages filled with 93 photographs. All but nine of the photos measure at least 4.25" x 6.75" with 26 measuring around 6" x 8.25" and 22 measuring approximately 7.5" x 9". The photographs are in nice shape, a few have some rippling and/or light fading. The album is also in very good condition with some wear to the cover and small edge-tears and rippling to some pages. The photographs, taken by Havana photographers including Ramon Corral and S. A. Cohner, were likely compiled by an officer or civilian who was part of the U.S. occupying force as the collection has a definite North American tone including photo-prints of General Leonard Wood and President Roosevelt affixed to the front endpapers. The photographs begin shortly before the war as one shows the U.S.S. Maine entering Havana harbor and another shows the Spanish Cruiser Viscaya departing. The album concludes around 1902 with the ending of the U. S. Occupation. Highlights include * A group image of General Ludlow, the Military Governor of Havana during part of the occupation, and his staff; * A group image of Maximo Gomez y Baez, the Generalísimo of the Cuban Army, during its fight for independence from Spain; * Several images of El Morro, the fortress guarding the entrance to Havana harbor; * Two images showing the wreck of the Battleship Maine after it was blown-up; * A crowd of Cubans removing the statue of Queen Isabela II from its pedesta; * Many images of U. S. soldiers in Havana including the Army tent-headquarters at El Palacio de las Capitanes Generales; * Two images of what appear to be Cuban soldiers and dignitaries (likely as part of the 1899 ceremonies to honor Maximo Gomez and the fourth anniversary of start of the Cuban revolution against Spain); * Three images of the magnificent funeral possession accorded Calixto Garcia (the famous Cuban general referenced in Elbert Hubbard's famous essay, A Message to Garcia), * Important Havana buildings including the Teatro Tacon and Mascotte Hotel; * Three images of the entrance to the Colon Cemetery and its gigantic boneyard; * Peasant huts, a sugar cane field, basket weaver, vendors, street scened, storefronts, market stalls, and more. This is an important visual record of life in Cuba immediately following the Spanish-American War as seen through the lenses of local photographers and 'curated' by an occupying U. S. national. Scarce. As of 2016, no similar Cuban occupation albums are in the trade and neither ABPC nor Rare Book Hub reflect any auction records. OCLC shows one institutional holding of a similar but smaller album. A number of indivisual S. A. Cohner and Ramon Corral photographs of Havana during this period are also in the Eola Willis Cuban Photograph Collection at the College of Charleston Libraries.

[Broadside]: Harvard Illustrated Magazine Out Today

Cambridge: Harvard Illustrated Magazine. 1902(?). Broadside. Measuring 8" x 14". Printed in red and yellow on thin card stock. Modest age-toning and three tiny tack holes, near fine. Decorated with a very attractive illustration of the Egyptian goddess Isis, with wings spread over the word "Jan." presumably indicating the January issue. The illustration is signed in print "George Allan England '02" along with two Chinese(?) characters. England attended Harvard University, where he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. However, he is better known as a socialist politician and writer; he was the author of several books of speculative fiction and science fiction, as well as collections of detective stories. His story, "The Thing from - 'Outside'", appeared in the first issue of the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. In his day he was considered one of the closest rivals to Edgar Rice Burroughs. This advertising poster, exhibiting his artistic skill, is presumably very uncommon. .

Les Systèmes Socialistes. Tome Premier - Tome Second

The River War. An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902 - Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine, together with facsimile gilt signature and block of one of Kitchener's Nile gunboats to the upper board, and of the Mahdi's tomb to the spine, black surface-paper endpapers. Very slight fading to spine (but considerably less than usual), very slight rubbing to ends and corners with a very small tear to cloth at head, spotting to edges, end leaves, and somewhat to margins of some inner leaves, still an excellent copy, sound and presenting very well. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Kitchener, 14 coloured maps and plans, 6 of them folding, a further 8 sketch-maps in the text. 40pp. publisher's advertisements at the rear. First one-volume edition, the second overall following the two-volume first edition of October 1899, this one of only 1,003 copies (as such a more scarce edition than the first) published on 15 October 1902. The text had been revised considerably, and a new chapter added describing the ultimate destruction of the khalifa and the end of the war, making Churchill's self-described tale of blood and war "at once accurate and complete." All subsequent editions of The River War are based on the 1902 abridged and revised text. A very smart copy in the original cloth. Cohen A2.2; Woods A2(b). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Our Forest Home (with ephemera)

Gazette Printing and Publishing Co, Montreal 1902 - 6 x 9 inches, ([8], 300pp, xci appendices). Original green cloth with gilt titles, spine lightly sunned. Six plates inserted - Frontis Frances Stewart at 72, Old Letters, Mr. Stewart, An early Sketch of Peterborough, Peterborough in Early Days and The Old Log House. A very attractive copy of an uncommon title. p34 with a production crease. p123-130 with a 1/4" tear at top of pages, otherwise very good plus condition. Being Extracts from the Correspondence of the Late Frances Stewart. Compiled and Edited by Her Daughter E.S. Dunlop. Second edition, with much added correspondence added (first was in 1889). A scarce family copy of an important record of early settlement. Ephemera included: Two family photographs pasted to front pastedown dated Christmas 1914 (perhaps descendants of Frances Stewart?). Signed July 31, 1902 letter written by E.S. Dunlop (née Stewart), daughter of Frances and editor of this book. Letter thanks the unknown person sent to for a gift and hopes the book (Our Forest Home) helps with the person tracing her family. Letter on tissue has old tape marks, now flat and in good condition. The Stewart's immigrated from Ireland to settle on the Otonabee River in Douro Township in 1822. The Stewarts were among the first European families to settle in the Peterborough- Lakefield region in the first half of the nineteenth century and to make a go of it; their neighbours included the Traills, Moodies, and Stricklands. "The book is full of the day-to-day life of the family, the way in which the children of the first generation suffered as they were drawn into the laborious life of the farm, the easing of strain with the coming of additional settlement (the founding of Peterborough in 1825), and the later scattering of the children to new and more settled homes." - Story, Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature. Dunlop, Eleanor (nee Stewart), 1819-1907, was the second daughter of Thomas and Frances Stewart. In 1845, "Ellen," as her close friend Catharine Parr Traill called her, married Charles Dunlop (1817-1906), a successful Otonabee farmer. Ellen, with Catharine's assistance, edited Frances Stewart's letters for Our Forest Home (Toronto, 1902). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Satyricon of Petronius A New Translation with Introduction and Notes

Paris: Charles Carrington,, 1902. Octavo. Publisher's half vellum, brown morocco spine labels gilt, fleuron gilt to spine, marbled sides and endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Contemporary ex-libris to front pastedown, partially removed. Covers lightly rubbed and dust soiled, internally sound and fresh, an excellent copy. First edition, in the publisher's deluxe half vellum, of this translation (falsely attributed by the publisher to "Sebastian Melmoth", a.k.a. Oscar Wilde) of the Satyricon of Petronius, one of the few surviving novels of Classical Rome, from a limited edition of 515 copies, this one of 440 on French hand made paper. Gaius Petronius (c.27-66 AD), Emperor Nero's official arbiter elegantiarum, who was accused of treason by jealous fellow-courtiers and forced to commit suicide, was indeed a lifelong fascination for Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), himself the arbiter elegantiarum of his own age, who had been denounced and destroyed by the prudish hypocrisy of his contemporaries. Wilde indeed boasted of having read the Satyricon in the original Latin, and, moreover, in his Picture of Dorian Gray, explicitly identifies his central character as having "found, indeed, a subtle pleasure in the thought that he may really become to the London of his own day what to imperial Neronian Rome the author of the Satyricon once had been". The connections between Wilde and the Satyricon were sufficiently close and sufficiently well known to make this attribution by the publisher Carrington (who knew and worked with both Wilde and Robert Ross) of a posthumously published translation by Wilde seem highly plausible and appealing. However, it is now understood (see Rod Boroughs, English Literature in Translation, 1880-1920, vol. 38 issue 1, p8, 1995) that Carrington's attribution to "Sebastian Melmoth" (Wilde's Parisian pseudonym, a name revealingly confected from martyred homosexual heart-throb Saint Sebastian and the eponymous Faustian character in his great-uncle Charles Maturin's gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer, 1820) was a clever hoax. Nevertheless the production is an appealing part of the Wildean mythos, and a beautiful book at that. Carrington, in his foreword, writes moroever of the hypocrisy of public morals in terms Wilde himself would have appreciated all too keenly: "Those persons likely to experience the greatest delight in conning over this book privately will be the first to decry it most vehemently in public." He notes that this translation is the first "literal and unexpurgated version", and warns that "the attitude of contemporaries towards Petronius and the study of the "Satyricon" [is] a sort of moral Barometer, whereby to gauge the degree of emancipation attained by successive Centuries from the thraldom of conventional prudery." A superb copy in an attractive contemporary binding of this scarce and appealing text, no copy of which is recorded at auction since 1989.
