HAFIZ, Shemseddin Mohammed; John Payne, trans.
London: Printed for the Villon Society by private subscription and for private circulation only, 1901. London: Printed for the Villon Society by private subscription and for private circulation only,, 1901. now first completely done into English verse from the Persian, in accordance with the original forms, with a biographical and critical introduction. In three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo. Original vellum, titles gilt to spine and front, moon, clouds, and stars design to spine and sides in gilt and blue, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spines toned, vellum soiled, short closed tear to front free endpaper of vol. I. A very good set. First complete translation into English verse of the poems of Hafiz, copy number 36 of an unstated limitation of the ordinary issue (there being also a rare large paper issue). John Payne's (1842-1916) privately printed translations for the erotic Villon Society include Boccaccio's Decameron, Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat, and the Arabian Nights. Here he turns his attention to the Diwan of Hafiz (also Hafez), the 14th-century Sufi poet whose work is considered to represent "the zenith of Persian lyric poetry" (Encyclopaedia Iranica). Payne himself declared that Hafiz kept company with Shakespeare and Dante as the three greatest poets of the world. Though a complete translation into prose of Hafiz had been executed by H. Wilberforce Clarke in 1891, Payne's is the first complete English translation rendered as poetry.

Cram, George
George F Cram, New York, 1901. This is an amazing atlas. It is 864 pp in length and includes state maps, country maps and city maps from around the world. All maps are present and in good condition. Nothing has been removed from this copy. There are 32 pp of United States city maps. Many of the maps are full color double page plates that measure 14.5" x 22" In addition to maps there are several hundred pages of information on the solar system, political history, world history, agriculture and business. As the title page states, this book is a "Geographical, Historical, and Statistical Presentation of the World in all its Divisions." The interior of the book is clean and tight. All edges are gilt. Unfortunately, the covers are in poor condition. The spine is missing. Please refer to the photos to obtain a better understanding of all that is included in this fantastic early 20th century volume. In addition, the condition of the exterior is clearly documented in the photos. If it were not for the damage to the covers this would be a $1500 atlas. Original Oil Painting
With its two strong sails inscribed with Chinese lettering by the artist, this handsome artisan work memorializes the traditions of the ancient Chinese junk, by highlighting the revolutionary and long-standing sailing designs as well as a fascinating superstitious practice. The vessel features painted eyes and an open stern with far reaching tips which exudes speed. A dragon-like flag flies from one of the masts. A stern rudder helps steer through the rough waters of the harbour, which is surrounded by mountains, possibly representing Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour. The peaked and winged-style stern of the vessel suggests speed and agility at high seas. Five Chinese seafarers onboard are wearing traditional dress. Oil painting on thick cardstock painted circa 1901-1910, and measuring approximately 25,5 cm x 20,5 cm. Indication at perimeters of previous framing, otherwise in very good condition. The Junk was so highly preferred in Eastern Asia that it saw very few modifications through the ages and is still used in China today. Chinese pirates and merchants alike favored the Junk over other sailing vessels, for many reasons. The sails of a Junk were designed so that they can move inward, unlike any other western sailing vessel up until the 19th century. This allowed the ship to sail into the wind while stilling moving forward, rather than trying to sail hundreds of nautical miles to find adequate winds. The sails were strong, being fabricated of canvas, silk, or matting, and were further supported by bamboo battens which reinforced the strength of the sail and ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Phoenix: 1901. Condition: Very Good. Phoenix. Very Good. 1901. Newspaper. Three items related to the hanging of train robber Black Jack Ketchum, an outlaw who operated in New Mexico and Arizona. The first item is a complete issue of the April 27, 1901 issue of the Phoenix newspaper The Arizona Gazette, with the front page reporting the hanging that occurred the day before in Clayton, New Mexico, including the fact that "The rope broke and his head was jerked off." Issue is toned, with chips and holes where it was bound; pages are separated. 21" x 14 1/2". The other two items are divided back silver gelatin postcards from the early 1900s depicting the event, two famous images in very good condition, each 3 1/2" x 5". One is of Ketchum on the gallows, "The Hanging of 'Black Jack' the Outlaw", and the other is "Body of 'Black Jack' after the Hanging. Showing head snapped off," with two men squatting over the body and hooded head. Murderer and train robber Thomas E. "Black Jack" Ketchum was caught on April 17, 1899, the day after he was seriously wounded trying to rob a train by himself. His injuries resulted in the amputation of his arm while in jail. He was hung on April 26, 1901. The famous and extra gruesome hanging was apparently a mistake of the drop being too great for a man of Ketchum's weight.; B&W Photographs.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Clark, Walter, ed.
E.M. Uzzbell and the Nash Brothers, et al., for the State of North Carolina, 1901. An uncommonly good-looking set of five volumes, published in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1901 for the State of North Carolina by E.M. Uzzbell and the Nash Brothers. Edited expertly by (Judge) Walter Clark, born 1846, died 1924. First Editions, all. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copies, with bruised but unbroken tips, bumping to spine heads and feet, but with neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining, cracking to a couple of gutters, but even those bindings holding strong. Gilt-stamped sub-titles to each cover, thus: "First at Bethel, Farthest to the Front at Gettysburg and Chickamauga, Last at Appomattox." Lauded in Dornbusch II, NC(C)-722, in Broadfoot's Civil War Books: a priced checklist (who notes personally the incredibly unusual find of volumes in this good condition), and being an In Tall Cotton item (#24), too; Harwell notes "This was a historical undertaking of a magnitude matched by no other single state. It was approved at the meeting of the state Veterans Association at Raleigh in October 1894. Judge Walter Clark was requested to select contributors and to supervise and edit the work" (p. 7). Illustrated profusely with portraits, maps, plans and plates, and with front boards stamped with the Confederate flag in full color, rubbed but still quite bright and lovely, extremities rubbed and sunned a bit, very light toning to and sunning of text-blocks, else with sharp and distinct bordering and flourishes of red … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vaniman, Chester Melvin, photographer
King Brothers, 1901. First edition, oblong folio, approx. 6.25 x 28.5"; very minor creasing to upper left corner, one small chip to upper left corner measuring 1/8 x 5/16", otherwise a beautifully preserved image in double-matte wooden frame. Scarce panoramic photograph taken by Melven Vaniman (1866-1912), using a panoramic camera of his own design, fitted with a Goerz lens of ten inches focus. In order to catch the shot, Vaniman climbed to the top of the tallest mast on the barque Gerard C. Tobey, and lashed himself with the camera and his apparatus to it. There was tremendous wind, the camera-box was nearly a yard long and over a foot wide, and he nearly fell with them as he tried to take the image. Vaniman began his storied career as a panoramic photographer in Hawaii where he worked until 1904, and was known as an adventurer and businessman whose nickname was the Acrobatic Photographer. He shot images from gas balloons, ship masts, tall buildings, and even a home made 30 meter pole, and later became a famous aviator and balloonist. Mann, Thomas.
Berlin, S. Fischer, 1901. 2 Bände. 8°. 566; 539 S. Halblederband der Zeit, Kopfrotschnitt. 1. - Bürgin I, 2. Sprache: Deutsch. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

London, William Blackwood, 1901. First Edition. First Impression. A rare book. Presumed first issue, with ads dated '7/01' and a stamp to the title page 'With the Publisher's Compliments.' The author's only title, and thought by Bleiler to be heavily influenced by The Purple Cloud by M.P. Shiel. The Shiel work was rejected by a publisher, and then this work mysteriously appeared. Shiel made accusations of plagiarism. Whether or not that was the case, remains to be seen. Regardless, the book's hard to find. A near fine copy with a little bumping to the spine tips and some dustiness to the top of the block. Endpapers toned, front edge dusty and a little spotted. [5672, Hyraxia Books]. "Kings, Queens, Presidents, and Leaders of Thought and Action in Both Hemispheres send Sentiments for the Newly Awakened Work" "The movement for strengthening the Red Cross organization and work was made the occasion for reading greetings from hundreds of rulers and distinguished persons at the Coliseum meeting last night, as well as in similar meetings In various parts of the United States. (), 1901. Original oil painting of a striking and stylish Chinese junk (Vessel), on thick cardstock. Made circa 1901-1910. Measuring approximately 25,5 cm x 20,5 cm. Indication at perimeters of previous framing, otherwise in very good condition.

Brooklyn Life Publishing Company, 1901. Decorative Cloth. 3 nicely-bound folio volumes of the weekly "Brooklyn Life". Each volume collects half a year's worth of issues: Vol. I: Sept. 1901-Feb. 1902; Vol. II: March-August 1904; and Vol.III: Sept. 1917-Feb. 1918. Undoubtedly the most thorough weekly accounting of all things Brooklyn (and Long Island), the newspaper has a wonderful local focus and consists of business advertising, photographs and cartoons thruout, not to mention the most detailed reporting on Brooklyn's growing financial industry, real estate, the school scene, sports, weddings, etc. A gamut of turn-of-the-century Brooklyn life, painstakingly documented. All 3 volumes have held up nicely as well and are solidly-bound and VG, in their russet cloth (with light-blue spine labels) over marbled boards. Light wear and rubbing to the boards, very light soiling to the preliminaries. The pages of the weeklies are bright and clean and eminently readable. A very impressive collection of 70 some issues of this early, now-uncommon New York weekly. Collectible; Very Good.
