Kahn Gustave 1859 1936
Leo Tolstoy
- An extraordinary five-page letter signed by Leo Tolstoy, 'Leon Tolstoy', in French, October 23rd 1901. The author addresses his letter to 'Mon Prince' (the former Persian ambassador to St. Petersburg, Prince Mirza Reza Khan Arfa) and begins by thanking his correspondent for sending him a poem. He then reflects on the views of one of the poem’s characters, adding 'that the roots of evil are egoism and ignorance'. Tolstoy then expounds on this idea with a summation of his personal beliefs, in part (translated): 'The most important ignorance is ignorance of the "true religion" within the reach of all men, founded upon reason, common to all peoples and therefore imperative for all. The principle of this religion is expressed in the Gospel by these words: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Tolstoy opposes his correspondent’s view that a sense of brotherhood is possible between states and their heads, insisting that true brotherhood would render obsolete all distinctions of authority, 'All should obey God and not man'. He continues by declaring that war, perpetuated by self-interested governments, would be abolished by the 'true religion' which would make murder and military service impossible: 'Wars can only be abolished by the individuals who are their victims. They will only be abolished when the true religion will be so widespread that the majority of men will be ready to suffer violence rather to use it.' Tolstoy concludes by explaining that he is ill and bedridden, thus unable to write in his own hand. In fine condition, with small splits along … [Click Below for Full Description]

After JOHN LOCKWOOD KIPLING (1837-1911)
[Australia? United Kingdom? : artist unknown : between 1901 and 1910]. Carving from teak wood (Tectona grandis) in high relief, 580 x 340 x 40 mm, set in its fully contemporary oak frame, 680 x 440 mm; the carving is unsigned, and the back of the frame is also sans label or inscription; the work is in fine original state, and appears to have never been removed from the frame. This impressive relief wood carving by an anonymous but highly proficient artist is an accurate contemporary copy of one of the suite of ten low-relief terra-cotta plaques modelled by Rudyard Kipling's father, John Lockwood Kipling, which were used as the photographic plate illustrations in the first American and first English book editions of Kipling's novel Kim. The first American book edition was published in New York City by Doubleday, Page & Company on 1 October 1901; the first English book edition quickly followed, published in London by Macmillan and Co. on 17 October 1901. Lockwood Kipling's illustrations continued to be used in numerous successive editions on both sides of the Atlantic. Kim was hugely successful and has, over time, cemented its place as one of the most popular works of fiction in the English language. The novel is set during the 1890s, prior to the Third Afghan War, against the backdrop of The Great Game - the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. Yorkshire-born artist and teacher John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911), an influential figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, spent most of his career in India. He first arrived there in 1865 to take up his p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Photographer unknown.
[Hong Kong and Canton, April 1901]. Group of 67 silver gelatin photographs taken by an anonymous photographer with a private camera, all in format 95 x 115 mm, mounted recto and verso of [19] loose leaves from an album of the period, all with the photographer's handwritten captions in ink beneath the image; 63 of the photographs, taken in April 1901, show views and scenes in Hong Kong (approximately 50) and Canton, including streetscapes, harbour and river scenes, prominent buildings and geographical features, temples, an execution ground, examination cells, a dinner hosted by the officers of the Fürst Bismarck, and army personnel, nursing sisters and civilians on board USAT Hancock; a further 2 photographs show the Hancock on her return voyage to America at Nagasaki (May 1901) and San Francisco (June 1901), and 2 photographs show nursing sisters on board the USAT Sheridan in November 1900; all of the photographs are in very good condition; a few of the album pages have some mild foxing or toning, but are otherwise clean and sound. A unique visual record of Hong Kong and Canton at the opening of the twentieth century, taken with a private camera by an American visitor. Both the USAT Hancock (formerly SS Arizona) and USAT Sheridan (formerly SS Massachusetts) were fitted out as troop ships by the US army in 1898 and used as transports during the Spanish-American War, carrying soldiers and nursing staff between San Francisco and Manila. The present photographs were most likely taken by one of her crew on the Hancock's final return voyage to the States from the Philippines.

London Hodder and Stoughton. [1901]. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, pictorially blocked with an illustration of Marble Arch, titled in gilt to the spine. Very minor edgewea, slight fraying to the head of the spine, some foxing/browning. Uncommon. 'William Tufnell Le Queux (2 July 1864 London - 13 October 1927 Knocke, Belgium) was an Anglo-French journalist and writer. He was also a diplomat (honorary consul for San Marino), a traveller (in Europe, the Balkans and North Africa), a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. His best-known works are the anti-German invasion fantasies The Great War in England in 1897 (1894) and The Invasion of 1910 (1906), the latter of which was a phenomenal bestseller.'.

David Park Barnitz
New York: Doxey's. New York, Doxey's, 1901. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. 436/600 Copies. A very nice copy of an uncommon book, one of only 600 copies printed by William Doxey who was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time. The book has been popular with readers of horror and the supernatural for a century, due in large to the horrific descriptions of death. The book is near fine with some bumping to the spine tips, a little rubbing and a tight split to the front hinge. Barnitz, who had the book published anonymously, died shortly after its publication of a reported 'enlarged heart' though some suspect suicide. A masterpiece of decadant poetry. [6459, Hyraxia Books]. . Near Fine. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1901.

Art Nouveau Watercolour.
[Paris, 1901?] 20” by 15”, matted and framed. An intriguing and quite charming painting of a cafe scene in Belle Époque Paris. Research has failed to yield anything about the artist, although he has signed his name (Gaston Dumoniel?), dated his work 1901, and even given the precise name and address of the cafe. Le Grand Manège at 4 Rue Buffault, Faubourg Montmartre, was once popular with early bicyclists (although no one present here appears dressed for the sport) and was positively reviewed in La Bicyclette of April 13, 1894. Provenance: Private collection, California.

[Boer War Broadside].
Klerksdorp, Transvaal, Printed by H.M. Guest, Printer, Bookseller and Stationer, 'Mining Record' Office, [3 March] 1901. Approximately 440 x 285 mm, a broadside printed on acidic newsprint (recto only). Lightly creased where once folded, with trifling chips to some edges, but overall in excellent condition, recently mounted on archival tissue for lasting stability, and housed in a Mylar sleeve with a loose acid-free backing board for support. The 'Hobart Mercury' (18 April 1901) reprints the text of this broadside in its entirety, with the following informative introductory paragraph: 'The "Mining Record", published at Klerksdorp, Transvaal, issued the following "Extra" on the 3rd of March last:- The First Tasmanian Bushmen took part in the fight at Hartebeestfontein Poort, and got through without any casualties'. The headline action took place on 18 February, 'after a march of a fortnight, and fighting almost every day'. The second paragraph gives details of a sharp skirmish in thick bush at Uitval's Kop on 3 February. 'The Boers laid in wait in the bush, and the troops had to clear the position, which they did in a most gallant manner. The Boers were in front and on the flanks in force. After some sharp fighting the Boers retired, our loss being one South Australian killed and five Bushmen and two South Australians wounded, among the latter being Lieut. Dempsey'. These casualties were members of the 3rd South Australian Bushmen's Contingent; the soldier killed was 34 Corporal C.W.B. Currie.
