Created by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens
Huntley & Palmers 1901 and 1930, Reading, England. Two wonderful examples of Huntley & Palmers famous figural biscuit tins (i.e., cookie tins in Americanese). Multi-book tins are titled Literature in Huntley & Palmer references. This multi-book tin measures approximately 6.5" x 6.25" x 4.75" and is in the shape of eight bound books strapped together by a belt. All the books are by different authors. Company information "Huntley & Plamers Biscuits / Reading & London" is stamped on the base. Almost no wear. This is an example of the first Literature tin produced by the company. Its included 'books’ reflect some of the most popular authors and titles of the time: Thomas Macauley’s History of England (the full set is represented by one volume), John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, a collection of works by Robert Burns, Charles Dicken’s The Pickwick Papers, Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Samuel Smiles’s Self Help, and a volume of Shakespeare’s works. Interestingly, only Smiles’s Self Help, with its emphasis upon hard work as the foundation of creativity and success, is almost unheard of in today’s world. Literature tins proved to be one of the company’s most popular tins and were produced, in ten different variations until 1924. The single-book tin measures approximately 10" x 7" x 1.5". The tin is the shape of a book with a hand-tooled cover. Almost no wear. This tin is often misattributed as being based a book in the British Library, Het Boek Der Gebeden. Actually, it is a facsimile of a Grolier design of a book held in the Princeton libr … [Click Below for Full Description]

AA Cummings
Heidelberg, Transvaal: 43499, 1901. Folio, 178 lines, approx. 2000 words; previous folds, else fine. Cummings details the final actions of one Mr. Elton, Cummings' comrade-in-arms, from Dec. 15, 1899 to his death on June 10, 1900. "In reference to Mr. Elton I shall gladly write anything I can remember in reference to him and our sojourn together with General Bullers' column through part of the campaign. Mr. Elton joined Colonel Thorneycroft's regiment whilst we were lying at Chieveley, shortly after the first battle of Colenso - Dec. 15, 1899-; a comrade introduced us to one another, and Elton laid down his kit along side of mine, and until he went into the hospital at Ingogo, we rode side by side..." Cummings cannot precisely remember the first action they saw together, but "it must have been one of the many small skirmishes we had with the Boers along the Lugela river to the west of Colenso. .. Leaving Chieveley - Jan. 10 - we rode on to Trichardt's drift on the Lugela. .. We had to swim our horses over the river which was deep and strong, Elton's horse swam deeply, but well, and so did mine, and we got across safely, but one of our men was nearly drowned - Southey - whose horse rolled over and over with him. .. and one of the 13th Hussars - Guilor - was drowned... "We camped on the north side of the river in a corn field: very seldom did Elton complain, but he did grumble that afternoon when we had to carry boxes of buscuits for about two miles on our backs. .. at a time when we were hungry and tired. "On the afternoon of the 19th Thorneycroft's rode out to a big hill, n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blei, Franz, Schriftsteller (1871-1942).

Taylor, Joseph Henry
Washburn, N.D.: Printed and published by the author, 1901. Very good.. 113,[2]pp., plus twelve plates on various colored paper. Contemporary plain black cloth; text block stapled. Light dampstaining and wear to boards. The rare first edition of this appealing and idiosyncratic history of the Dakotas and Northern Plains. Each chapter presents a vignette of 19th-century Plains life as experienced by the author, encompassing accounts of prominent Indians, horse thieves and other vigilantes, frontier printers, government officials, and Dakota prison inmates. As is typical of works by Taylor, the text was set and printed by the author. The second edition, published in 1902, is much more common, but no copy of the present work appears in sales records other than in mid-1940s Decker and Soliday catalogues. With twelve photographic and illustrated plates. "Important sketches of frontier and Indian life on the upper Missouri and Great Plains" - Jenkins. Rare. Decker 30:279. Howes T67, "aa." Graff 4088. Gould's Grove, Wallingford [England]: n.d. [published January 1, 1901, in the Chicago Tribune]. Two pages on single folded leaf. 12mo. To the American Red Cross: "Child of our hopes! We of the Old World greet you". Very good. Beautiful sentiment from the author of the beloved THREE MEN IN A BOAT (1889), reading in part: "The Light moves East to West. At the breaking of our day you were in the darkness. Our noonday was your dawn. Our twilight shall be the fullness of your working day. Child of our hopes! we of the old world greet you ... May it be your destiny to guide humanity into the Promised Land our feet have failed to reach." The first paragraph of the article in the Chicago Tribune explains the occasion: "WORLD-WIDE GREETINGS TO THE NEW CENTURY RED CROSS MOVEMENT. "Kings, Queens, Presidents, and Leaders of Thought and Action in Both Hemispheres send Sentiments for the Newly Awakened Work" "The movement for strengthening the Red Cross organization and work was made the occasion for reading greetings from hundreds of rulers and distinguished persons at the Coliseum meeting last night, as well as in similar meetings In various parts of the United States. Greetings were received from Presidents, Emperors, Kings, soldiers, authors, and politicians ..." The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in 1881.

Brooklyn, NY: Brooklyn Life Publishing Company, 1901. Condition: Very Good. 3 nicely-bound folio volumes of the weekly "Brooklyn Life". Each volume collects half a year's worth of issues: Vol. I: Sept. 1901-Feb. 1902; Vol. II: March-August 1904; and Vol.III: Sept. 1917-Feb. 1918. Undoubtedly the most thorough weekly accounting of all things Brooklyn (and Long Island), the newspaper has a wonderful local focus and consists of business advertising, photographs and cartoons thruout, not to mention the most detailed reporting on Brooklyn's growing financial industry, real estate, the school scene, sports, weddings, etc. A gamut of turn-of-the-century Brooklyn life, painstakingly documented. All 3 volumes have held up nicely as well and are solidly-bound and VG, in their russet cloth (with light-blue spine labels) over marbled boards. Light wear and rubbing to the boards, very light soiling to the preliminaries. The pages of the weeklies are bright and clean and eminently readable. A very impressive collection of 70 some issues of this early, now-uncommon New York weekly.

Condition: Very Good. Very Good. 1901. Photograph. A rare collection of 24 black and white original photographs from William McKinley's 1901 funeral in Canton, Ohio. Most of the prints are in very good condition with some corner wear and a few chips, measuring 6" x 8", with three measuring 4 1/2" x 7". The smaller photos have some corners missing. Brief captions on some photos. The photos show the Canton City Hall, Mckenzie & Robel novelty shop, and People's Savings Bank on Market Street and the McKinley house, with crowds for the procession in many scenes. Several shots are of a horse-drawn cart pulling a canon, with military escort, and several others are of carriages, one of which seems to be the hearse. A few photos are possibly unrelated, but still in Canton; two show snowy scenes and another is of an African American man in a stable doorway polishing a harness. Other photos are of the military band in the funeral parade and of military guards standing at attention and at rest at the Westlawn cemetery. The funeral took place on September 19, 1901, the day after the train carrying the casket arrived in Canton and two weeks after McKinley was shot. No records of these photos have been found.
