Churchill, Winston S
[New York]: January 31, 1901. 3 pp. pen and ink on three sheets of 105, Mount Street, W. stationery, rectos only, with original envelope. 1 vols. Churchill Lectures in America. On December 1, 1900, Churchill sailed for New York to begin a two month speaking tour of North America organized by Major James Pond. The young Churchill was fresh from the battlefield of four of Queen Victoria's wars, where he served a dual role as officer and war correspondent. His lecture, "The War as I Saw It," was a telling of his views on the South African War and his escape from captivity, all illustrated with magic lantern slides. Major James Burton Pond (1838-1903) was a lecture promoter who, in addition to Churchill, represented Samuel Clemens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Henry Stanley. Churchill writes to Pond on the final day of the tour, two days before he set sail for England on the day of Queen Victoria's funeral. Reading in part, "I am much obliged to you for the handsome volumes you have presented me with, and which I shall add to my small but growing library with great satisfaction ... I am of course disappointed with the small profit [£1,600] my tour has resulted in, but at the same time I do not regret my visit to these shores for I have gained a great many new ideas and learned and have learned a good deal that will be of value later on. I am sorry we had a disagreement for although I am not quite convinced that you have managed the lecture tour well, I fear I was unreasonable. However, any annoyance I may have caused you was more than balanced by the wide circulation of your unfortun … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original - not a reprint, reproduction or facsimile. 'History of the City of Paterson and the County of Passaic, New Jersey' by William Nelson Paterson, 1901 Volume I, and all published. This is Nelson's most important work as well as his rarest (excluding a few pamphlets of which only a few copies were printed). As in all of the surviving copies, the text on the last page ends in mid-sentence. This history ends with page 448, but is as published. Mr. Nelson died before the completion of the work and his manuscript was published in its incomplete form. Reportedly Hiram Deats found in Nelson's home, sheets of the book that had escaped the Nelson fire and had them bound as he found them. Book is square and tight. No loose, or soiled pages. Boards are slightly bowed. There is light bumping to corners and edge wear. Some writing is blacked out on the front paste down. There is underlining of names done in red and green involving the Doremus family genealogy - sample of a typical page is scanned above. Closed tear on page 331. A few margin notes on page 86 and 88. Note made on last page re: Erskine Biography - scan provided.

ROLFE, Frederick, Baron Corvo.
London & New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1901. Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine and front cover lettered in white, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine faded with a spot of loss to colour, rubbing and fading to board edges, light foxing to endpapers, a couple of spots of worm damage to book block; a very good copy in the scarce, faintly soiled, jacket with a couple of chips to extremities, a little loss to centre of spine, short closed tear to foot of front panel. First edition, first printing, first issue binding. This work expands Rolfe's earlier collection of short stories describing the travels of a group of young saints, Stories Toto Told Me, (1898), from six to thirty-two. The sheets for this work were printed in the US, and 1,500 sets were imported into the UK, where the book was published on 5 March 1901. It was released in the US one month later, on 6 April 1901. Copies issued in the US were bound in purple cloth, as in the present copy, and those in the UK in green, grey, red, or dark blue cloth. Woolf suggests, however, that the earliest copies issued in the UK were imported from the US already bound in the purple cloth. Woolf A4. [Attributes: First Edition]

Charles Robert Ashbee (17 May 1863 - 23 May 1942) was an English designer and entrepreneur who was a prime mover of the Arts and Crafts movement that took its craft ethic from the works of John Ruskin and its co-operative structure from the socialism of William Morris. Essex House Press carried on the craft printing of the Kelmscott Press, utilizing all its equipment, but designing new type, including the Caslon font used throughout this title. C. R. Ashbee selected for his press a variety of classic genres in which to apply the printer's craft. Puritan classics by the press include, John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress, "A journal of the life of John Woolman in service of the gospel", and the present volume by William Penn. 1901. Condition: Acceptable. These books are over one hundred years old, so the concept of "acceptable" will vary. Much of the printing on the spine is worn away, as you can see in the photographs. The pages are intact but require delicate handling. I would suggest the use of gloves when handling these books. I who write these lines am Ed Yetman, III. Many people around the world know me through my international correspondence chess play and the publication of my magazine, Yetman Brothers' Descriptive Chess Magazine. I also hold an advanced degree in history, literature and other arts. I am not just a player; I am a bookseller and bibliophile of forty years' experience. I have read thousands of chess books and done years of research, and I have heard of and seen books like Cook's Synopsis of the Openings and Freeborough and Ranken's Chess Openings Ancient and Modern. I have never heard of this series, Mordechai Morgan's The Chess Digest. I have never seen it for sale. There are facsimiles on the internet, but not the original. When I found it packed away in the Trojan Hoard of Allan Troy, it came as a complete surprise to me. Mr. Morgan painstakingly assembled all the known analysis of his day, from all tournaments and magazines published between 1850 and 1902. It was the state-of-the-art analysis of the opening at the time. Many diagrams, most unusual for the time. The notation is fractional (see photographs above) using Miron Hazeltine's reformed Descriptive notation: it uses the hyphen instead of the word "to"; the Knight symbol is "Kt"; when a piece moves along the firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Very Good. Very Good. 1901. Photograph. A rare collection of 24 black and white original photographs from William McKinley's 1901 funeral in Canton, Ohio. Most of the prints are in very good condition with some corner wear and a few chips, measuring 6" x 8", with three measuring 4 1/2" x 7". The smaller photos have some corners missing. Brief captions on some photos. The photos show the Canton City Hall, Mckenzie & Robel novelty shop, and People's Savings Bank on Market Street and the McKinley house, with crowds for the procession in many scenes. Several shots are of a horse-drawn cart pulling a canon, with military escort, and several others are of carriages, one of which seems to be the hearse. A few photos are possibly unrelated, but still in Canton; two show snowy scenes and another is of an African American man in a stable doorway polishing a harness. Other photos are of the military band in the funeral parade and of military guards standing at attention and at rest at the Westlawn cemetery. The funeral took place on September 19, 1901, the day after the train carrying the casket arrived in Canton and two weeks after McKinley was shot. No records of these photos have been found.

(Zoar, Ohio) Gunn, Alexander
ca. 1883-1901. 1 vols. Various sizes. Gunn, a friend of William C. Whitney, McKinley, and Mark Hanna, was a wealthy Cleveland businessman who retired to spend the last 20 years of his life in Zoar, the commune in Ohio. His note-books, covering 1883-1901, were discovered after Gunn's death, edited by Don Seitz and published by WILLIAM COLLINS WHITNEY. Wesson, in MIDLAND NOTES, states: "Gunn's notes provide us with an enchanting picture of the pellucid life in the famous community of which he became a member. Though he fought to the last for the preservation of the community which he loved so dearly, ironically enough, it was his fireside stories of life in the land of flesh-pots that resulted in its dissolution by the dissatisfied younger members." The Zoar Society originated after 1817, when approximately 350 German immigrants, mostly poor, came to eastern Ohio and settled on a tract of 5,000 acres of land, along the banks of the Tuscarawas River. They were comprised of both Lutherans and Roman Catholics, who were coming to America to escape persecution. Joseph Bimeler was a teacher who became their political and religious leader. The village was named after the biblical city to which Lot fled from Sodom and Gomorrah. Under the community Articles of Association, the earnings of every individual were to be turned over to a common treasury. While some families remained intact, there were some families which were broken up due to poverty, so that some homes were comprised only of men, while others were comprised only of women. The primary occupation in the community was farmin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Meredith to Gissing: 'for you to take your place among our best'. Novelist George Meredith (1828-1909) writes his friend George Gissing (1857-1903), acknowledging his latest book, and asking about Gissing's health, reading (in part): "The title of your present abode indicates the open air cure. Let me know, if you can find time, how it affects you, & whether you are strengthened to work, as I trust you are, for a clear way is open to you now, & only the fair state of health is wanted for you to take your place among our best." Gissing, George
23 October 1901. Ink on 10-centime postcard, 20 lines, addressed on verso in Gissing's hand, to F.G. Kitton, Esq., Pré Mill House, St. Albans, Angleterre. 1 vols. 3 x 5 inches. Gissing at Work on Dickens. Gissing began to correspond with F.G. Kitton after publication of his 1898 study of Dickens; they collaborated on the ill-fated Rochester edition of Dickens, killed after only a few volumes appeared. "chosen by George Sproul as general editor and annotator of the Autograph Edition, Kitton wrote to Gissing to propose that he should write a new introduction to David Copperfield - a choice which was ratified with particular gratefulness. Gissing promised to have it ready by the end of the year and named his terms - fifteen guineas for 3,000 words -- and for once he received more than he asked for, that is, twenty pounds" -- P. Coustillas, Gissing's Writings on Dickens In his minute hand, Gissing writes Kitton concerning the preparation of a typescript of Gissing's Preface to David Copperfield, and proposing to send him the manuscript by registered post. At this time, Gissing was also in negotiations with Chapman and Hall over the terms for an abridgment of Forster's Life of Dickens. Gissing gives Kitton an address for correspondence c/o Mademoiselle Saglio, Château de Tazières, Fourchambault, Nièvre, France. Marie Saglio was a cousin of Gabrielle Fleury, and the couple stayed there in the autumn of 1900 & 1901. David Copperfield appeared with Gissing's introduction in 1903, the year of his death. Fine.
