Wells, H[erbert] G[eorge]
London: George Newnes, Limited, 1901.. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vii [viii] [1] 2-342 [343-344: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], twelve inserted plates with illustrations by Claude Shepperson, original decorated blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, black coated endpapers. First British edition, first binding. The U.S. Bowen-Merrill edition preceded the British edition by approximately one month. The two editions have minor textual differences. "... a gripping adventure story as well as a historic milestone in modern science fiction." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 782-86. "The last and most complex [of Wells's early scientific romances] is THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. The two first men, Bedford and Cavor are well-contrasted, the civilization of the Selenites is excellent both as horror and satire; and the novel abounds with wonderful passages of unforced description at which Wells is unrivaled... This lovely book also contains much of Wells's delightful humor; it has kept the joints of his discourse oiled to this day. After THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, Wells's science fiction novels are never quite the same." - Bleiler (ed), Science Fiction Writers, p. 28. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-166; (1981) 1-175; (1987) 1-98; (1995) 1-98; and (2004) II-1225. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2335. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 795. James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (29 October 1740 - 19 May 1795) was a lawyer, diarist and author, best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. First published in 1791, The Life of Samuel Johnson was greatly admired for its unique style; unlike other biographies of the era it directly incorporated conversations that Boswell had noted down at the time for his journals. He also included far more personal details of Johnson than contemporary readers were accustomed to. Instead of writing a respectful and dry record of Johnson's public life, Boswell painted a vivid portrait of the complete man. It is still often said to be the greatest biography ever written. Wells, H.G
London: George Newnes, 1901. First English edition. 12 inserted plates by Claude Shepperson. vi, [ii], 342 pp. 8vo. Inscribed to Wells's Literary Mentor W.E. Henley. Presentation copy of the first English edition of The First Men in the Moon, inscribed by Wells to his literary mentor, the poet and editor W.E. Henley: "To W.E. Henley, with affection, from H.G. Wells." W.E. Henley (1849-1903), a writer and influential editor of The National Observer and other papers "had a gift for finding and encouraging new talent" (ODNB). He published works by Kipling, Hardy, Yeats, and Barrie among others, and early in his career he collaborated with his friend Robert Louis Stevenson on four plays. Henley encouraged Wells to develop a series of time traveling stories into what became The Time Machine, Wells's first success and what remains his most important scientific romance. Henley serialized the work and even secured a generous publication agreement with Heinemann. "In making friends with Henley he had made the contact that was to launch his career" (MacKenzie, H.G. Wells, p. 105). The First Men in the Moon was the first Wells novel to be filmed; it was produced by Gaumont Films and released in 1919. A scarce title inscribed. Currey, p. 518; Hammond B7; Wells 18. Provenance: W.E. Henley (presentation inscription from Wells); Sotheran's (bookseller's ticket); Eugene Plunkett (bookplate and penciled inventory number on front free endpaper). Potter, Beatrix.
Privately printed: December, 1901. 16mo, color frontispiece and 41 black and white illustrations. Original gray paper boards, flat spine, decoration and titles to upper board in black. The boards a little chafed, extremities slightly rubbed, slight soiling on lower cover, otherwise a very good copy of a fragile book. In a green morocco folding box. First privately printed edition, one of 250 copies. The true first printing of Potter's first and most famous book with the author's signed presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "For Miss [Caroline] Hutton with love from Beatrix Potter Christmas 1901". Potter was 27 and living at home when she wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Five publishers rejected her illustrated manuscript but Potter arranged for it to be privately printed by Strangeways and its immediate success launched her career. Inscribed association copies of the first printing are truly rare; this copy, inscribed at the time of publication when she gave away several copies as Christmas presents to family and friends, unrestored and in relatively fine condition, was once said to be the "only copy to contain a personalised presentation inscription by Beatrix Potter. The remaining copies [at auction] either contain simply her signature, publication details in her hand, or an inscription dated December 22 with no named recipient." In fact, one other copy which we handled recently, was inscribed to a family retainer. The two copies in the V&A are inscribed, one in 1901 and the other in 1917. Caroline Hutton, a distant relative, was responsible for carrying Pot … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARRHENIUS, SVANTE. - [THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT]
Stockholm, 1901. 8vo. In the original blank wrappers. In "Öfversigt afKongl. Vetenskaps Akademiens Handlingar, 1901. N:o. 1.". A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 25-58. Papers from this supplement series to the 'Proceedings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' are often mistakenly identified as offprints or 'first seperate edition' (indicating the existence of a jounal edition) because they have their own title page with the publishers named and their own pagination, but they are not - all publications from this series were printed seperatley in this way and issued with wrappers First appearance of this paper, which represents Arrhenius' final work on the Greenhouse Effect, and containing here his strong replies to the criticism which came from Knut Ångström. In 1896 he was the first scientist to speculate that changes in the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could substantially alter the surface temperature through the greenhouse effect. In 1824 Fourier had printed an article that inaugurated research into global warming and the consequences thereof. In that article Fourier established what is now called the "greenhouse effect", discovering that gases in the atmosphere might increase the surface temperature of the earth. This effect, however, was only really explored at the end of the 19th century, namely by Svante Arrhenius, who discovered the absorption of radiation by the atmosphere that actually warms a planet and provided the first quantitative investigation of the greenhouse effect. He concluded that fossil fuel combustion may eventually result in enhanced … [Click Below for Full Description]

POINCARE (Henri)
Paris, Carré et Naud, 1901 8vo (4), X, 641 and 3 pages ; contemporary purple half-calf (spine slightly insolated). The earliest formulation of the principle of relativity. "For more than twenty years Poincaré lectured at the Sorbonne on mathematical physics; he gave himself to that task with his characteristic thoroughness and energy, with the result that he became an expert in practically all parts of theoretical physics, and published more than seventy papers and books on the most varied subjects, with a predilection for the Théories of light and of electromagnetic waves. On two occasions he played an important part in the development of the new ideas and discoveries that revolutionized physics at the end of the nineteenth century. [...] Poincaré was active in the discussions concerning Lorentz' theory of the electron from 1899 on ; Poincaré was the first to observe that the Lorentz transformations form a group [...] ; and many physicists consider that Poincaré shares with Lorentz and Einstein the credit for the invention of the special theory of relativity." (DSB, volume11, page 59). Indeed, in this rare second edition of Electricité et optique, amended with a new courses about Lorenz given in 1899, Poincare recognizes that the Lorenz's theory is the most satisfying existing, but, in the same time, he has the feelings that the Lorenz's theory is incomplete. This fact leads Poincaré to formulate and emphasize for the first time in the history of physics as clearly and explicitly, a principle of relativity : "je regarde comme très probable que les phénomènes optiques ne … [Click Below for Full Description]
