The inside front and back cover contain two separate paintings on leather. Inside front: An original, signed PAL painting depicting a naked nymph with raised wine glass and a bust of the devil smiling on stone pedestal. Inside back: A full glass of red wine with protagonist's head inside and a snake wrapped around glass. This painting by PAL is unsigned. The paintings on inside covers are framed by floral decor and gilt-stamped ruling. Decorative, light green silk mounted to front and back free endpapers. Fully rendered watercolor on half title depicting Bacchus, pouring wine for a naked Nymph, with snake curling around skull at their feet, signed PAL by Jean Paleologue. This edition has been printed from type, and is limited to fourteen numbered and registered copies and is Copy No. 4, one of four that were not for sale, signed by Lee Fairchild and Jean Paleologue on the colophon. Three frontispiece dry-points with tissue guards, one hand-colored in water color. Dedication page as well as foreword by Lee Fairchild with decorative printed green ruling followed by the complete text of The Tippler's Vow in 25 stanzas. The original version of The Tippler's Vow was first published in February 1901 with 17 stanzas and is bound in at rear. Texts with decorative rulings and red and green lettering. All 26 illustrations are complete in four states and signed in the plate. The four states include one personally hand-colored in water color by Jean Paleologue plus three additional states, two of these states on Japan. Each of the 26 second state plates on Japan contain a vignette complementing the image above and are all signed PAL in pencil. All plates with tissue guard. Four page publisher's prospectus laid in. A near fine copy of this ambitious production. Lee Fairchild was one of the foremost orators of his generation in America. His Tippler's Vow with its grim humor, philosophy, wit, and solemn warnings was praised by The New York Times Saturday Review: "The Tippler's Vow is extremely clever. It should go on every Omar shelf." Readers will compare it to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam though the motives of the two poems are diametrically opposed. (Publishers prospectus) In contrast to the Rubaiyat's paean to wine and its pleasures The Tippler's Vow points out the excesses of alcoholism and the dangers to body and mind from libation. Jean Paleologue, a Romanian born poster artist, painter, and illustrator is a descendent of the Imperial House of the Paleologues, the last Emperors of Byzantium. Paleologue was on the staff of Vanity Fair, a contemporary of Leslie Ward (Spy) and Carlo Pellegrini (Ape). Some of the more important publications of Blackwood & sons were wholly illustrated by him. He gained fame for his pastels in Paris. The Tippler's Vow is a compelling poem in 25 stanzas - each with 4 lines of rhyming verse - emploring the reader to watch for the dangers of exuberant indulgence of wine: "The wine that rims the glass with sparkling eyes / Is but the sun and dew mixed-up in lies." We read of loving women who are too affectionate, of man and minds too shallow in inebriated delusions of grandeur. A lingering suicide, the drowning of the past and the enslavement of the will are the dubious fates we will experience from the wholehearted indulgence of wine. Each stanza is illustrated masterfully with Jean Paleologue's profound interpretation of Fairchild's dramatic visions. Just one more drink? Alas, that just one more Has been how many thousand ones before! I break the glass that holds the crimson blush Of him who first taught man the grape to crush!

A fantastic Carrie Nation signed note, "I can not spare a hatchet"!

Topeka, Kansas, March 7, 1901. 7.5" x 5". "Single page letter/note, 7.5"" x 5"", on thin paper. Verso has two small paper attachments to the corner tips perhaps used for framing purposes. Letter scripted in graphite, dated ""March 7th, 1901,"" and signed ""Carrie Nation.""An intriguing short letter written to ""Charles"" by the infamous hatchet carrying crusader who tried to bring the world to a state of sobriety. Armed with what she believed was a calling from God, Carrie Nation's revelation propelled her to do ""God's wishes,"" and eradicate drinking with the firm belief that alcohol was the ""destroyer of men's souls.""Her anti alcohol crusades did not originally start violent, in fact, she originally would just campaign against the use of alcohol with simple protests and serenade saloon patrons with hymns. However, by date of this letter, she was in full hatchet mode having received her calling from God when she was awakened by a voice saying ""GO TO KIOWA"" and my hands were lifted and thrown down and the words, ""I'LL STAND BY YOU."" The words, ""Go to Kiowa,"" were spoken in a murmuring, musical tone, low and soft, but ""I'll stand by you,"" was very clear, positive and emphatic. Carrie was impressed with a great inspiration, according to her, the interpretation was very plain, it was this: ""Take something in your hands, and throw at these places in Kiowa and smash them.""By the writing of this letter, Carrie was a phenomenon and would regularly see the inside of a jail cell. Her letter was written from ""In Jail Topeka"", with the date of ""March 7th 1901."" This may have been the culmination of the event when her fervor led her to invade the governor’s chambers at Topeka. However, whether her jail term on this one occasion emanated from invading the governors chamber, or instead yet another example of destruction of property, Carrie became such a phenomenon that she capitalized on her notoriety by profiting from the selling of souvenir hatchets and hitting the lecture circuit; all of which raised the funds necessary to bail her out of jail many times. This wonderful letter, signed by Carrie Nation with her various self ordained titles, ends with her perfect salient note to Charles ""I can not spare a hatchet yet""!"

SEFER HASHANA.       Warsaw Warszawa, Varsha, Poland 1901 - Title page also has, handwritten in Hebrew: "From the library of M. V. Ros[?man]." Paper yellowed. A few illustrations. Nahum ben Joseph Samuel Sokolow (10 Jan 1859 Wyszogrod, Poland - 17 May 1936 London) Zionist leader, author, translator, and a pioneer of Hebrew journalism. Born to a rabbinic family in Wyszogród, Poland (then Russian Empire), Sokolow began writing for the local Hebrew newspaper, HaTzefirah, at age 17, quickly won a huge following that crossed the boundaries of political and religious affiliation among Polish Jews, from secular intellectuals to anti-Zionist Haredim, eventually had his own regular column, then became the newspaper's senior editor and a co-owner. He was a prolific author and translator. His works include a 3 volume history of Baruch Spinoza and his times, and other biographies. He was the first to translate Theodor Herzl's utopian novel Altneuland into Hebrew, giving it the name Tel Aviv (literally, "An Ancient Hill of Spring"). which in 1909 was adopted for the first modern Hebrew-speaking city: Tel Aviv. In 1906 he was asked to serve as secretary general of the World Zionist Congress. He then spent years crisscrossing Europe and North America to promote Zionism. During World War I, he lived in London, where he was a leading advocate for the Balfour Declaration of 1917, in which the British government declared its support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. On 6 Feb 1917 a meeting was held in Maida Vale with Dr Weizmann to discuss the results of the Picot convention in Paris. Sokolow and Weizmann pressed on after seizing leadership from Gaster; they were granted official recognition from the British government. At 6 Buckingham Gate on 10 Feb 1917 another was held, in a series of winter meetings in London. The generation of Anglo-Jewish Association assimilationists, Greenberg, Cowen and Gaster were stepping down or being passed over. ".those friends . in close cooperation all these years", Weizmann suggested should become the EZF Council (English Zionist Freedom) - Manchester's Sieff, Sacher and Marks, and London's Leon Simon and Samuel Tollowsky: the Zionists take over of Jewish leadership in Britain. While the war was raging outside, the Zionists prepared for an even bigger fight; the survival of their home land. They issued a statement on 11 Feb 1917, and on 12th, they received news of the Kerensky take over in Petrograd. Tsarist Russia was very anti-semitic. But incongruously this made the British government even more determined to help the Jews. Chaim Weizmann wrote to the Manchester Zionist, Harry Sacher, who became a focus for the view that Sokolow and Weizmann had capitulated; forfeiting the right to lead by "preferring British Imperialism . to Zionism". Sacher distinguished his Manchester base as different from the "London folk". He did not trust the Foreign Office, nor Weizmann's tactics. In a letter to Tollowsky, Weizmann branded Sacher as "Draufheher" - German extremist Sokolow acted as Weizmann's eyes and ears in Paris on a diplomatic mission with Sir Mark Sykes to negotiate with the French. The idea that the Jews would form a new kind of Triple Entente under the Ottoman Empire was unsettling to them. Nonetheless the delegation left for Paris on 31 March 1917. One purpose of the Entente was to strengthen the hand of Zionism in USA. "The Jews represented a powerful political and economic force.if subterranean influence". Sokolow did not know of the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement and hidden British/French understanding on Middle Eastern policy matters. He believed that he must report to Weizmann that what France really meant by a "Greater Syria", taking the whole of Palestine for themselves. In a series of letters in April and May 1917, Weizmann accused Sokolow of letting the Zionists down in negotiations with France. Sokolow countered that . . . [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Newell produced forty pictures for an elegantly designed edition, the text surrounded with beautiful ornamental designs" (Graham Ovenden, The Illustrators of Alice, 1972, p. 10). Whereas Tenniel had depicted Alice with blonde hair, Newell makes her dark-haired, taking his daughter Jo as a model.

Eigenh. Schriftstück mit U. München, 3. IX. 1901.

1901. 2 SS. Folio.
