20 Glass plate negatives of Western Australia early in the history of the W.A. gold rush as well as family images of Shockley, his family and home, housed in two boxes

1901. William Shockley was an American-born mining engineer, surveyor, and amateur photographer and a contemporary of Herbert Hoover, also a mining engineer involved in mining in Western Australia & China. One can imagine a friendship between Shockley's and the Hoover's- all 4 of them had an interest in geology and mining. May Bradford Shockley was a Missouri-born mining surveyor in Nevada and federal deputy surveyor of the mineral lands, a highly unusual profession for a woman in this period. Lou Henry Hoover, who grew up as something of a tomboy in California, was enrolled as Stanford University's only female geology major in 1894, where she met Herbert Hoover. They delayed marriage plans until she completed her education and he pursued his mining career in Western Australia, where gold had recently been discovered. During their time in China, she became proficient in Chinese. She was also well versed in Latin; she collaborated with her husband in translating Agricola's De Re Metallica, a 16th-century encyclopedia of mining and metallurgy. The Hoover translation was published in 1912, and remains in print today as the standard English translation. The slides are principally of Western Australian mining sites. Measuring 4 1/4 x 3 1/2", they are housed in the original brown glossy papered slipcase. One bears the original French label by A. Lumiere, Paris. The subjects are: 1. Five men in a flat barren landscape. These men appear to be visiting dignitaries. The one on the left may possibly be Premier Newton Moore. This image includes an older white-bearded man wearing a white pith helmet and wearing a jacket, vest and tie. He is obviously not a miner, but we were not able to ascertain who he might be. 2. Two men dryblowing gold, one with a pan, one with a box. An iconic image. 3. Seven men in front of a bush hut, with a water bag. (This is an image of miners, as well as the older white-bearded man in the pith helmet and wearing a jacket, vest and tie.) 4. Two wooden sheds in scrub with mine head behind. (with more work, it could probably be determined which mine this is, as the mining district is known, Laverton.) 5. One man in front of two trees in the scrub. 6. A laden stage coach in front of a shop in the bush. An iconic image. 7. Men in the mulga bush near a willy willy (whirlwind) or small fire (?). 8. Mine head with bush hut. (Similar to #3, alternate view of #4). 9. One naked white man about to dive in a bush lake. (A lake in the gold fields would be an extraordinarily rare occurrence.) 10. Mine head, horse and buggy and two wooden sheds (see #4 & 8). 11. Two laden camels with three young camels. 12. A pair of aboriginal men with ritual scarring on their backs (their backs to the camera.) (housed in a cellophane wrapper numbered "10", outside of the box.) A rare and iconic image. 13. Camel drawn water wagon. (housed in a cellophane wrapper numbered "5" , outside of the box.) 14. Horse buggy in lightly treed country. 15. Wooden settler's hut in lightly forested area, trees nearby are ring barked. Stone fireplace. Other slides, mostly family views of Shockely (standing in front of his grand looking library, his piano, gardening) & his small son. These are in the original numbered slide box manufactured by by A. Lumiere & Ses Fils, Lyon, "Plaques au Gelatino-Bromure d'Argent." With blue china marker writing on the label, the box covered with glossy brown paper, somewhat rubbed. The box is numbered and titled "Sigma". 16. Camel in front of a stone wall. The stone houses behind look like Western China. 4 1/4 x 3 1/2". Family views, size 6 x 4". 17. Portrait of Shockely in front of book lined shelves & typewriter 18. Piano in his refined drawing room. 19. Small boy in bath, wrapped in a towel. 20. Shockely, wearing a hat and digging in the garden of a large refined home. There are prints for #17-20, made by Peter Howard in 2004, with a credit card slip signed by Peter. Extraordinarily rare. Period images by identified photographers are very scarce. Shockley's archives are housed at Stanford; a large collection of his images, which include many of China, India and Western Australia, are housed at Duke University. Of the thousands of photographs at Duke, they hold only 160 or so glass plate negatives.

MISS INCOGNITA: A NOVEL by "Don Jon" [pseudonym]

      F. Tennyson Neely Co. [1901]., New York, Chicago, London - Octavo, pp. [iii-v] vi-xx [7] 8-321 [322-324] [note: erratically paged, but complete], original burgundy cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, pictorial paper onlay affixed to front panel, t.e.g. First edition. A presentation copy with an inscription in Cheyney's hand on the front free endpaper: " A little remembrance / of Atlantic City / and / Joseph Tyler Butts." Eccentric SF "romance novel, set in Chicago, New York, London and Bermuda in the years following the Civil War. The plot is centered around a psychologist and inventor, who through the use of hypnotism and 'hydro-electric vibratoners' attempts to control young women to submit to his whims. He becomes infatuated with a young girl under his tutelage, tricks her into submitting herself for an experiment with his 'vibratoners' and marries her once she is under his control. Unbeknownst to him, she is his daughter from a previous liaison. As the story unfolds, she elopes with her own brother, and becomes free from the mind control she was subjected to. At the novel's climax, she, having plotted her revenge, confronts the evil doctor; he, overwhelmed with desire for her, attempts to take her by force by once again using the 'vibratoners' which she has rigged to backfire. The novel closes with the doctor being electrocuted, and his tongue bursting into flames while the heroine calmly watches." (Reading note courtesy of Lorne Bair Rare Books, Inc.).       1901. An Extravagant Story. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1901. Original tan cloth pictorially decorated in black and orange. First Edition of the first collaboration between Conrad and Hueffer -- a tale that combines science fiction with political satire, somewhat in the same vein as had recently been popularized by H.G. Wells. This is regarded as Conrad's only science fiction tale -- though the work is largely Hueffer's.~The "I" narrator is Etchingham Granger, a writer of impeccable pedigree whose fortunes are none too good and who is forced to take on several disagreeable commercial assignments. Early on, he meets an extremely attractive young lady who is a "Fourth Dimensionist." This tribe of "new people" -- there is a dystopian pattern here -- lacks feelings and normal or human responses. They, and she, are dedicated to becoming the inheritors of the earth because of their superiority in intellect, control and deception. In particular, they plan to undermine public confidence in its institutions, which turns out to be fairly easy given the nature of the men who govern. The political satire lies here: everyone has a price and everyone is self-serving regardless of the seriousness of the issues. There is no "public policy" among public men. [Karl]~For copyright reasons the American edition was published first; the English edition was then produced from the American plates, and was published about five weeks later.~This is the usual first published state, with the cancel dedication leaf (there exist about six known copies with the uncorrected error "To Boys and Christina"). This copy's pictorial front cover has the sky uncolored (i.e., tan cloth color) rather than in gilt -- priority uncertain, but the few pre-publication copies have the gilt sky. The volume is in very good to near-fine condition -- scarcely any wear, but with quite minor cover soil (as is typical for this light-colored cloth). Cagle A6a.2, binding b.

BERLIN: GEORGE BONDI, 1901 Very good copy of the Book as a Work of Art in bright gilt stamped cloth cover of German first edition of Stefan George's Translations of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. Published by Georg Bondi in Berlin. the volume is a prime example of the overlapping of pure text and text carrier which Stefan George developed along with his own type as an element of his concept of "the poetological." This approach to publishing was inspired by his personal contact with the Paris circle of symbolists around Stéphane Mallarmé and  the French symbolist concept of "L'art pour l'art". Some soiling to boards.

        Les Poëtes Chansonniers Montmartrois.

[Paris, 1901?] 20” by 15”, matted and framed. An intriguing and quite charming painting of a cafe scene in Belle Époque Paris. Research has failed to yield anything about the artist, although he has signed his name (Gaston Dumoniel?), dated his work 1901, and even given the precise name and address of the cafe. Le Grand Manège at 4 Rue Buffault, Faubourg Montmartre, was once popular with early bicyclists (although no one present here appears dressed for the sport) and was positively reviewed in La Bicyclette of April 13, 1894. Provenance: Private collection, California.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Tokyo, Japan: Genroku-Kwan Photographer, R. Okamoto, 1901. Original photographs. Very Good. The 84 albumen prints measure 3.5" x 5.25" each and are delicately colored by hand. Included are studio portraits, dramatic scenes, and exterior views of men, women and children as well as many occupational scenes (painting lamps, fans, portraits), numerous views of geishas, musicians, tea ceremonies, rickshaws, fan-dancing, playing Go, market scenes, temples, marriage ceremony, water views, Tokyo street scenes, cherry blossoms, &c. Several are titled in the plate, but most are not. The photographs are of high quality with sharp focus and strong contrast. Some slight curling as usual with albumen prints, a little color offsetting onto blank versos, still quite attractive. In the photographer's original, printed envelope, somewhat worn but intact. Okamoto was a commercial photographer who played an important role in distributing albums and collections to Western audiences from his Toyko studio in the late Meiji era. [See Bennett, "Photography in Japan, 1853-1912."].
