[Attributes: Signed Copy]

COLLECTION OF EIGHTY-FOUR (84) HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPHS BY THIS JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHER: Tokyo, circa 1901

Tokyo, Japan: Genroku-Kwan Photographer, R. Okamoto, 1901. Original photographs. Very Good. The 84 albumen prints measure 3.5" x 5.25" each and are delicately colored by hand. Included are studio portraits, dramatic scenes, and exterior views of men, women and children as well as many occupational scenes (painting lamps, fans, portraits), numerous views of geishas, musicians, tea ceremonies, rickshaws, fan-dancing, playing Go, market scenes, temples, marriage ceremony, water views, Tokyo street scenes, cherry blossoms, &c. Several are titled in the plate, but most are not. The photographs are of high quality with sharp focus and strong contrast. Some slight curling as usual with albumen prints, a little color offsetting onto blank versos, still quite attractive. In the photographer's original, printed envelope, somewhat worn but intact. Okamoto was a commercial photographer who played an important role in distributing albums and collections to Western audiences from his Toyko studio in the late Meiji era. [See Bennett, "Photography in Japan, 1853-1912."].

The party left in the "Hardinge" and sailed via Moulmein, arriving back in Calcutta on the 18th December.]; List of the Party pp25-26 [This was a small all male party comprising Curzon, his Military Secretary Lt Col the Hon E Baring, Surgeon Lt Col E F Fenn, Foreign Secretary H S Barnes, and two aides de camp Capt Lord Suffolk & Capt C Wigram. Others joined for parts of the tour and Lady Curzon left Simla a month after Curzon to travel to Rangoon on the "Hardinge"]; Composition of special Trains pp27-34; Timetables pp35-36; Steamer arrangements pp37-39; Carriage arrangements at Mandalay & Rangoon pp40-41; List of Officials at princioal places visited pp42-47; Troops on duty at various points pp48-52; Inward and Outward Mails pp53-56; Distances p 52; Telegram Arrangements pp57-58; HE Lady Curzon's journey from Simla to Rangoon p59; Notes on the places to be visited pp60-85. Study of the manuscript entries in a neat hand in ink lead to the conclusion that this copy was used by Curzon's Surgeon, Lt Col Ernest Harold Fenn, CIE. The notes are terse but cast interesting sidelights on the tour. In Assam Fenn stayed with Capt Halliday and notes that the Planters' Dinner was "great success. H.E dragged home by Planters". In Manipur he stayed at the Residency with Col May, met Lumsden and "Various tribes of Nagas came in to see H.E. most weird dresses. Angamis, Toukals, Kukis, Semmas". At Mandalay he dined in the RAMC Mess at 8.30 and at Kyaukee shipe shooting he notes "Shot 80 couple, lost a great many, paddy not cut." [life is never perfect even when you very important]. This is a particularly special autumn tour because of its strenuous nature and travel to remote parts. One of the maps indicates a print run of 60 and the number of programmes produced like this will not have extended far beyond the official party. All these autumn tour books are hard to find. This one has now been through our hands twice and we have only come across one other example in the last 25 years. . Size: 12mo [4.5 x 6.35ins] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Saint Dunstan Edition / Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam / Edward FitzGerald Version ... specially illuminated throughout ... and that no two copies are alike

Cambridge, Mass: The University Press, 1901. Limited, hand illuminated edition. Hardcover. Fine condition. Extraordinarily rare edition of the Rubaiyat, number 20 of 22 copies created and extensively illuminated by hand by Ross Turner. The St. Dunstan illuminated editions "were conceived of at the turn of the century by publisher George D. Sproul and coincided with a wave of renewed interest in book art, coming on the heels of the Arts and Crafts movement."* Ross Turner was the first illuminator hired by Sproul to decorate the books. His style drew inspiration from flowers and the aesthetic style, with "foliation flourishing far outside the bounds of the capital..." Turner was known not to have signed his work, which is consistent with this copy. When it became clear that it took much longer than anticipated to illuminate a book, Sproul hired two other illuminators, one being Attilio Formilli. The limitations page states, "It is guaranteed to subscribers that eighteen copies only of this edition have been made for sale in America, and twelve copies only for sale in Europe, and that no future edition will be issued; that it is printed from type and the type has been distributed; that this copy, which is number ("twenty" in manuscript) has been specially illuminated throughout for (blank) and that no two copies are alike. Illuminated by (blank), Arranged and printed at (blank) and Published by (blank)." According to Potter 249: "This ed. was done as part of a set of 12 vols. of various authors' works, issued to subscribers at 12,000 dollars per set, of which 22 sets only were disposed of. The illuminations are from designs by Ross Turner, and others." Potter 249 (p81). The limitations page is followed by an illuminated title page, "Rubaiyat / of Omar / Khayyam / illuminated by / (blank) George D. Sproul / MCMI. The text follows with one quatrain printed on the first page, with a floral headpiece. Subsequent text pages have two quatrains per page. Printed on parchment, one side of leaf only, with hand illuminated initial to each quatrain. The text is from the 4th edition. 11 x 8 1/2", 106pp, in the original publishers tan cloth with gilt title on front board. It is unusual that the book exists in its original boards. It was expected that the clients would want it custom bound for their personal library, as would be done by those collectors with the means to buy the set in the first place. In its original cloth, this would be an unusual survival. Indeed, OCLC: 936229400 cites only the Houghton Library copy at Harvard with the label of Paul Edward Chevalier, elaborately bound in green morocco. *The Folger Library describes their copy of Shakespeare from the St. Dunstan edition in an online article titled "A superfluous luxury": the St. Dunstan illuminated editions (Sarah Hovde, May 19, 2015).
