        The Inheritors: an extravagant story.

New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1901 - Octavo. Original sand-coloured cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover with large pictorial block in black, red & gilt, fore- and bottom-edge untrimmed. Housed in a custom made, brown quarter morocco solander box. Spine toned (old label removed), covers showing light signs of handling (small old red ink stain on back cover, front cover lightly rubbed), inner joints cracked but sound, one or two leaves a little carelessly opened. A very good copy. Title page printed in orange & black. First edition, second issue, with the corrected dedication (Harvey notes that "only four copies known of the first issue"), predating the UK edition by five weeks. Signed boldly by Conrad on the half-title "Joseph Conrad". Although The Inheritors is "generally regarded as a science fiction tale of a group of people from another, apparently parallel, world who call themselves The Dimensionists" (Locke) it is also related to Heart of Darkness (serialised 1899, published in book form 1902) in that Conrad and Hueffer - in their first collaboration - "satirised Leopold II [King of the of Belgians] as the greedy and unscrupulous Duc de Mersch" (Jeffrey Myers, Joseph Conrad: A Biography, 2001, p. 96). Copies inscribed by Conrad are decidedly uncommon. Harvey, Ford Madox Ford, A9a; Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, I p. 57; Wise, Conrad, 8. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Serious Poems.

London: George Newnes, 1901 - Octavo (200 x 130 mm). Contemporary art nouveau-style "vellucent" binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath in green full morocco with a hand-painted vellum vignette of an angel surrounded by doves to the front board, with the calligraphic caption "We make all melodies our care", smooth spine with gilt titles direct, decoration to spine and boards in gilt and blind, bevelled boards, turn-ins ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled enpapers. Spine and front board a little faded, spine with some minor scuffing, tanning to outer edges of free endpapers, mild finger-marking to limitation page, else contents exceptionally bright. An excellent copy. Black and white frontispiece, illustrated title page, 12 plates and 4 decorative borders in the text by H. Granville Fell. Signed limited edition, number 19 of 30 copies on Japanese vellum signed by the illustrator. A beautiful example of Chivers's vellucent technique, which he developed in the early 1900s. In contrast to the earlier method used by Edwards of Halifax, the painting was not done on the underside of the transparent vellum, but on paper which was attached to the binding and covered with vellum. The surface of the vellum was then tooled in gold, thus enhancing the impressive effect.

Wien, Selbstverlag 1901 - VI + 66 S. OBrosch. EA. WG II 11. - Lichtschatten, Ebd.: kl. Fehlstelle a. T. fachmännisch m. Japanpapier geschlossen, Läsuren fachmännisch hinterlegt. Leichte Gbrsp. THE KLONDIKE A SOUVENIR

[San Francisco, 1901. [78]pp. with 186 halftone photographs. Oblong quarto. Original illustrated wrappers, later paper backstrip. Light staining and wear to wrappers. A few marginal tape repairs, faint dampstaining, several leaves with ink manuscript notes and signatures on some photos, long manuscript notes on both sides of rear cover. Good. A rare photographic record from the heyday of the Klondike gold rush. The photographs show prospectors in the field, Alaskan railways, Alaskan scenery and wildlife, trading with Indians, underground mining scenes, game hunting, and more. The book was published by Rufus Buck, a mining engineer, and photographed by George Cantwell of Dawson, Yukon Territory. Dawson appears to be the focus, as Cantwell features numerous locations in and around the city in the book. Two editions of this work exist, the present San Francisco edition and the Seattle edition, likely from a year earlier; the San Francisco edition is the much larger of the two, with over 100 more photographs. A wonderful assemblage of Alaskan gold rush images. Rare. WICKERSHAM 4290. TOURVILLE 826. DECKER 35:6.
