SEFER HASHANA. [Hashano] [THIRD YEAR] [Inscription at top left corner: "Checked by the Jewish Section of Mariupol Department of Public Education 19.IV.[19]21" [The department was created after the Russian Revolution, these Jewish Sections were responsible for ensuring that Jewish literature, schools, etc. were ideologically appropriate.]

Warsaw Warszawa, Varsha, Poland 1901 - Title page also has, handwritten in Hebrew: "From the library of M. V. Ros[?man]." Paper yellowed. A few illustrations. Nahum ben Joseph Samuel Sokolow (10 Jan 1859 Wyszogrod, Poland - 17 May 1936 London) Zionist leader, author, translator, and a pioneer of Hebrew journalism. Born to a rabbinic family in Wyszogród, Poland (then Russian Empire), Sokolow began writing for the local Hebrew newspaper, HaTzefirah, at age 17, quickly won a huge following that crossed the boundaries of political and religious affiliation among Polish Jews, from secular intellectuals to anti-Zionist Haredim, eventually had his own regular column, then became the newspaper's senior editor and a co-owner. He was a prolific author and translator. His works include a 3 volume history of Baruch Spinoza and his times, and other biographies. He was the first to translate Theodor Herzl's utopian novel Altneuland into Hebrew, giving it the name Tel Aviv (literally, "An Ancient Hill of Spring"). which in 1909 was adopted for the first modern Hebrew-speaking city: Tel Aviv. In 1906 he was asked to serve as secretary general of the World Zionist Congress. He then spent years crisscrossing Europe and North America to promote Zionism. During World War I, he lived in London, where he was a leading advocate for the Balfour Declaration of 1917, in which the British government declared its support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. On 6 Feb 1917 a meeting was held in Maida Vale with Dr Weizmann to discuss the results of the Picot convention in Paris. Sokolow and Weizmann pressed on after seizing leadership from Gaster; they were granted official recognition from the British government. At 6 Buckingham Gate on 10 Feb 1917 another was held, in a series of winter meetings in London. The generation of Anglo-Jewish Association assimilationists, Greenberg, Cowen and Gaster were stepping down or being passed over. ".those friends . in close cooperation all these years", Weizmann suggested should become the EZF Council (English Zionist Freedom) - Manchester's Sieff, Sacher and Marks, and London's Leon Simon and Samuel Tollowsky: the Zionists take over of Jewish leadership in Britain. While the war was raging outside, the Zionists prepared for an even bigger fight; the survival of their home land. They issued a statement on 11 Feb 1917, and on 12th, they received news of the Kerensky take over in Petrograd. Tsarist Russia was very anti-semitic. But incongruously this made the British government even more determined to help the Jews. Chaim Weizmann wrote to the Manchester Zionist, Harry Sacher, who became a focus for the view that Sokolow and Weizmann had capitulated; forfeiting the right to lead by "preferring British Imperialism . to Zionism". Sacher distinguished his Manchester base as different from the "London folk". He did not trust the Foreign Office, nor Weizmann's tactics. In a letter to Tollowsky, Weizmann branded Sacher as "Draufheher" - German extremist Sokolow acted as Weizmann's eyes and ears in Paris on a diplomatic mission with Sir Mark Sykes to negotiate with the French. The idea that the Jews would form a new kind of Triple Entente under the Ottoman Empire was unsettling to them. Nonetheless the delegation left for Paris on 31 March 1917. One purpose of the Entente was to strengthen the hand of Zionism in USA. "The Jews represented a powerful political and economic force.if subterranean influence". Sokolow did not know of the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement and hidden British/French understanding on Middle Eastern policy matters. He believed that he must report to Weizmann that what France really meant by a "Greater Syria", taking the whole of Palestine for themselves. In a series of letters in April and May 1917, Weizmann accused Sokolow of letting the Zionists down in negotiations with France. Sokolow countered that . . . [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC NEWS gives the following description of PHOTOGRAPHIC MOSAICS in April 1867: "The yearly collection in a handy volume of the most important articles which have appeared in the photographic journals is a great boon to photographers. Our esteemed friend, Mr. Wilson, Editor of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER, and his very able colleague, Mr. Carey Lea, have in their MOSAICS, just issued, not only issued a most judicious selection from various sources (always duly acknowledged), but they have presented the reader with some very valuable original articles besides. Altogether, this is one of the most valuable little volumes issued from the photographic press. Its circulation in America is, we understand, very large." Contributors include: H.P. Robinson, G.W.         PHOTOGRAPHIC MOSAICS

Benerman & Wilson, Philadelphia 1901 - 12mos., variable paginations, illustrations. 35 issues, the complete publication. The first 25 years are bound in 8 volumes of quarter morocco and cloth with gilt titles and rules on spine, there is wear at the hinges of the first 6 volumes due to dry leather, with one board partially detached; plus 10 years in original printed wrappers, and 2 volume are bound in cloth. Previous owner's neat bookplate, bookbinders sticker on pastedown of the first 8 volumes. Very good. Erroneously stated as commencing publication in 1864, this serial publication actually began in 1866. We are offering a rare and complete run, 1866-1901, of an annual publication that was part of the Wilson Company photographic concern. Wilson, Jabez Hughes, Edward L. Wilson, William Notman, John Towler, G. Wharton Simpson, Kilburn Brothers, H.H. Snelling. John Carbutt, Abraham Bogardus, George B. Ayers, E.M. Estabrook, H. Vogel, A. Wall, Catherine Weed Barnes, and Alfred Stieglitz, et al.Beginning with the issue for 1887, each volume contained a frontispiece or small portfolio from photographs. [Attributes: First Edition]

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [together with:] Through the Looking-Glass

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1901 & 1902. With an introduction by E. S. Martin. Illustrated by Peter Newell. 2 works, octavo. Original cream-coloured boards, spines and front covers lettered in gilt, front covers with gilt motif of Alice, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure portrait frontispieces of Dodgson and Newell, 40 monochrome plates by Peter Newell in each volume, titlepages and letterpress printed within pale green decorative borders designed by Robert Murray Wright. Spines toned and slightly rolled, a little toning and foxing to periphery of boards, light cockling to back cover of Wonderland. A very good set. First edition illustrated by the American illustrator Peter Newell (1862-1924), who executed some genuinely innovative work for periodicals such as Harper's, Scribner's and The Saturday Evening Post. "The flood of illustrated editions of Alice in Wonderland started shortly after Carroll's death [in 1898]... of which the best known was that of Peter Newell. Newell produced forty pictures for an elegantly designed edition, the text surrounded with beautiful ornamental designs" (Graham Ovenden, The Illustrators of Alice, 1972, p. 10). Whereas Tenniel had depicted Alice with blonde hair, Newell makes her dark-haired, taking his daughter Jo as a model.

Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Establishment of. the District of Columbia

1901 - COX, William V. Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Establishment of the Seat of Government in the District of Columbia. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1901. Large quarto, contemporary dark brown morocco blind and gilt stamped boards inlaid into full brown morocco gilt binding, later marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $4500.First edition of this richly illustrated celebration of Washington, DC, this copy specially bound for President Theodore Roosevelt, with his name in gilt on the front cover.December 12, 1900, was the celebration of the centennial of the founding the capital of the United States in Washington, DC. As there was no specific birthdate for the District of Columbia, President McKinley chose a convenient time when Congress would still be in session. Nearly every state's governor was in attendance, as were heads of state. Roosevelt attended the celebration as Governor of New York, although he had already been elected Vice President under McKinley's 1900 campaign. This volume was presumably published early in the year, so Roosevelt undoubtedly received his copy as Vice President. He became President on September 14, 1901, after McKinley was assassinated. This richly illustrated tribute to our nation's capital includes four large folding maps printed in color at rear. Maps with a few cellophane tape and expert repairs, original morocco boards expertly restored and inlaid into a new morocco binding. A beautiful copy with a memorable Presidential association.         Frauenkopf.

The Future of the Wireless Art [in Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony]

New York: D. Van Nostrand. First edition. original cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Tesla's enormously prescient essay, "The Future of the Wireless Art". "The idea of transmitting power through the open air has fascinated people for decades. In fact, it was radio inventor Nikola Tesla who first saw it was possible to not only move voices and information through the atmosphere over vast distances, but also electricity. With an investment from financier J.P. Morgan, Tesla famously began building Wardenclyffe Tower -- known also as the Tesla Tower -- in 1901 in Long Island, about 100 kilometers from New York City. The wood-supported tower was nearly 200 feet tall and had a large metal transmitter on the top in a half-sphere shape. It was used by Tesla in those early days to experiment with wireless communications and power transmission. In 1908 [in 'The Future of the Wireless Art'], he described how Wardenclyffe would usher in a future without wires: As soon as completed, it will be possible for a business man in New York to dictate instructions, and have them instantly appear in type at his office in London or elsewhere. He will be able to call up, from his desk, and talk to any telephone subscriber on the globe, without any change whatever in the existing equipment. An inexpensive instrument, not bigger than a watch, will enable its bearer to hear anywhere, on sea or land, music or song, the speech of a political leader, the address of an eminent man of science, or the sermon of an eloquent clergyman, delivered in some other place, however distant. In the same manner any picture, character, drawing, or print can be transferred from one to another place. Millions of such instruments can be operated from but one plant of this kind. More important than all of this, however, will be the transmission of power, without wires, which will be shown on a scale large enough to carry conviction. These few indications will be sufficient to show that the wireless art offers greater possibilities than any invention or discovery heretofore made, and if the conditions are favorable, we can expect with certitude that in the next few years wonders will be wrought by its application. -from The Future of the Wireless Art "Tesla's description of a world without wires will sound familiar to BlackBerry-addicted executives and iPhone-toting consumers, who can today transfer pictures to each other and download movies from the Internet without any need to plug in. Few would have expected such advancements three decades ago, let alone in Tesla's day..." (Tyler Hamilton, Mad Like Tesla). Tesla's article appears as the last chapter in Massie and Underhill's book, Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony. TESLA, NIKOLA. The Future of the Wireless Art. IN: MASSIE, WALTER W. and UNDERHILL, CHARLES R., Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony, pp. 67-71. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1908. Octavo, original green cloth; custom box. Light wear to cloth with loss of white lettering to spine. A rare copy in the original cloth of an important Tesla publication.

        Truth for September

American Lithographic Co, NY 1901 - Two-color stone lithograph. 28.5" x 14". VG, archivally mounted, small tears at bottom professionally repaired. The flecks of white on the right edge of the rock are in the print. In 1901, Truth magazine became synonymous with sumptuous color printing. Each monthly issue was an object lesson in the art, from its beautiful covers by William de Leftwich Dodge, through its full-color features and supplements, to its memorable back page advertisements. It was only appropriate then that the magazine would promote its monthly appearance with an equally impressive advertising poster. PAL (1855-1942), the Romanian poster artist, had already made a name for himself in Paris when he emigrated to the US in 1900. He was the perfect choice for Truth’s publishers (the American Lithographic Co.) when they sought through these posters to link their magazine with up-to-date European stylishness. They contracted for a year’s worth of posters (though only nine were executed). The September edition offered here is from the middle of the run. All of the PAL Truth posters are rare.
