THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES [serialized in the SEPTEMBER 1901 #128 through MAY 1902 #136 issues, inclusive, of THE STRAND MAGAZINE [although the two volumes present actually contain twelve consecutive issues from AUGUST 1901 #127 through JULY 1902 #138]

London [but actually New York]: George Newnes Limited 1901-1902, 1901 First [US issue] editions. Complete serialization within magazine issues #128 through #136 [but with three additional non-HOUND-serialization issues, #127 and #137 and #138, also being present]. [Please note that listings often cite August 1901 through April 1902 as the HOUND serialization issues, but the title page dates on the issues present in this set are clearly September 1901---which has the opening chapters---and May 1902---which has the concluding chapters. I have been advised that the explanation is that when published in the UK version of the magazine, the issue dates were indeed August through April, but in the US version of the magazine, the issue dates were a month later resulting in a September through May run for HOUND]. The issues are complete [with the other stories, illustrations, etc], save that the original paper covers of the individual issues are mssing]. Privately bound in two true half-leather [spine and corners] hardcover volumes. [This is not the publisher's pictorial blue cloth binding]. Badly in need of rebinding [because the leather has very badly deteriorated, with the spine area broken] but the contents are very nice [as the original paper was of good quality, it is still nearly white, without foxing, etc].. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket.

Memoirs of Arii Taimai E Marama of Eimeo, Teriiere of Tooarai, Teriinui of Tahiti, Tauraatua I Amo

Paris: privately printed, 1901. Quarto, folding map, a fine uncut copy in original blue cloth with gilt label. Tahitian aristocracy explained. Scarce history of Tahiti based on the testimony Arii Taimai, a surviving member of the Tahitian aristocracy. Born in 1824, Arii Taimai was the grand-daughter of Tati, paramount chief of the Papara district of Tahiti. Following the tragic death of his wife, American historian and intellectual Henry Adams arrived in Tahiti in 1891. Here he failed to find the enchanted world portrayed by Robert Louis Stevenson, but did have the good fortune to meet with Arii Taimai, a matriarch 'pleasantly garrulous, full of legends her father had taught her… She had, in her own name, title to more than thirty Tahitian marae. She had also been adopted by the widow of Pomare II, and had spent nearly the whole of her life suspended in the web of rhetoric about dominance and legitimacy of Tahitian lines and titles' (Dening, p. 278). Arii Taimai spoke to Adams through her daughter Marau who acted as an interpreter. Upon returning to the United States, Adams wove her testimony into his own researches on Tahiti and in 1893 published a small number of copies of which only a handful remain. This is the second edition of 1901, privately printed in Paris on fine paper stock with generous margins (several facsimile editions have since followed). In his bibliography of the library of Bjarn Kroepelien, bibliographer Rolf du Rietz comments on its scarcity and importance. He claims the memoirs 'must certainly be regarded as one of the finest items in the collection. Only a very few copies were printed, and these are now mostly to be found in public institutions'. This book itself is a strange blend, Adams having taken the testimony of Arii Taimai and woven it into his own history of the islands. Adams contrived Arii Taimai as the author, an effort constantly undermined by his scholarly references to voyage accounts, European philosophy and classical mythology. Nonetheless, much of the content is directly derived from the author's personal interaction with the Tahitian matriarch, and as such the book contains unique and valuable accounts of the history and genealogy of the islands. From the library of acclaimed American novelist Louis Auchincloss, with his bookplate.

        Memoirs of William Cox, JP

William Brooks & Co, Sydney and Brisbane 1901 - Octavo, portrait frontispiece, coloured plate depicting arms and 2 photographic plates, wear to original tissue protecting title page, top edge gilt; in the original red moire cloth, gilt, just faintly sunned at spine. First edition, rare: an exceptional copy in the original red moiré cloth boards. This work includes printed extracts from Cox's journal, written while he was supervising the building of the first road across the Blue Mountains in late 1814. William Cox (1764-1837) arrived in the colony in 1800 as a lieutenant in the New South Wales Corps, and soon after acquired Brush Farm at Dundas from John Macarthur. By 1803 he had over-reached his credit and, having been suspended as paymaster for the Corps, the ensuing years were turbulent for the young officer (including being arrested and ordered to England in 1807). Cox, not long retired from the army, returned to New South Wales in 1810, where he was made a magistrate on the Hawkesbury by Macquarie. It was Macquarie himself, keen to capitalise on the recent crossing of the Blue Mountains, who commissioned Cox to supervise the construction of the road over the Blue Mountains. Cox was given a small working party of thirty convicts, each of whom had been promised their freedom as a reward. Together, the gang made 163 kilometres of road (including over a dozen bridges) over rugged and mountainous terrain in a staggeringly short six months. It was an extraordinary achievement, and Macquarie rightly praised his efforts and awarded him the first land grant beyond the mountains. This volume reproduces his journal, the original of which is held by the Mitchell Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
