A Masque of Days from the Last Essays of Elia

London - Cassell and Company, 1901. London - Cassell and Company, 1901 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this lovely book, based on the popular Last Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb. The essays in the collection first began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 and continued to 1825. Lamb's essays were highly popular and were printed in many subsequent editions throughout the nineteenth century. The personal and conversational tone of the essays has charmed many readers; the essays established Lamb in the title he now holds, that of the most delightful of English essayists. With beautiful colour illustrations by Walter Crane on every page. Walter Crane (18451915) was an English artist and book illustrator. His work featured some of the more colourful and detailed beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many nursery rhymes and children's stories for decades to come. He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. Condition: In decorative paper-covered boards. Externally sound, with just some light rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Berlin and London: A.H. Keane, 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. English-language edition. 11 x 12.5 inches, oblong. pp. [ii], 132, [18 leaves printed rectos only], [133]-146, [1]. Rear pocket containing folding full-color facsimile of the codex, 18 plates on 5 folding sheets (four sheets with 4 panels each, one sheet with 2 panels). Indexed, with many illustrations in the text. Each plate measures approximately 10.25 x 11.5 inches. Ex-library, in a buckram library binding with title stamped on upper board. Various old ownership markings, title page creased and repaired, text otherwise sound and clean. Plates a bit toned, with some repairs to the verso along the folds, but generally very good. Text includes an introduction describing how the book came to be produced, a history and description of the manuscript, and a detailed explanation and analysis of the content of each manuscript page. "The Aubin Tonalamatl is a Nahuatl codex which consists of eighteen screen-folded pages on maguey bark paper. It is constructed out of thirteen bark pieces that were pasted together, and it is meant to be read from right to left . It contains the 260 symbols that represent the tonalpohualli, or the count of days. The codex would originally have been 20 pages long, but the first two pages have been lost. The pages are painted on one side and the contents relate to divination, recording the omens associated with particular days. It seems to have originated in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala" (Donna Yates, citing Frederick Starr's review in American Anthropolgist, 1904).

        THE MASTER KEY

, 1901. 1901. Cory, F. Y.. An Electrical Fairy Tale. Illustrations by F. Y. Cory. Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company, n.d. [1901]. Original olive green cloth with color plate affixed to front cover. First Edition of this early Baum title, published the year after THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. The protagonist Rob Joslyn is in fact the author's second son, Robert Stanton Baum (who was 15 when this book was published) -- to whom the book is dedicated. Rob conducts electrical experiments in the attic of his family's home, where, trying to get a cardboard house to light up, he inadvertently "touches the Master Key" thus causing the appearance of The Demon of Electricity -- who tells Rob he may demand three wishes for three consecutive weeks... Included are twelve dramatic color plates.~This copy is in the primary binding with the dramatic flash of light on the front cover, and is in the frequently-encountered third state, with the second line on the copyright page measuring 1 25/32" wide (and with "Brooklyn, N.Y." properly printed at the bottom). This is an unusually fine, bright copy. Schiller #77; Boller #86.

        Bishopsgate Institute

mp; 1911 - London - Published by the Governors of the Bishopsgate Foundation 1901 - Nicely bound library catalogues. Two full leather hardbacks with gilt lettering and decoration. Governor's copy. Scarce (Probably unique copy). First edition. The Bishopsgate Institute opened in 1895 and is a cultural institute. The original aims of the Institute were to provide a public library, public hall and meeting rooms for people living and working in the City of London. Bishopsgate Institute was built using funds from charitable endowments made to the parish of St Botolph's, Bishopsgate. These had been collected by the parish for over a period of 500 years, but a scheme agreed by the Charity Commissioners in 1891, enabled these to be drawn together into one endowment. Reverend William Rogers, Rector of St Botolph's and a notable educational reformer and supporter of free libraries was instrumental in setting up the Institute and ensuring that the original charitable aims were met. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm, however one of the inner front hinges has gone. There is some rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spines. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright. Overall the condition is very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Regeneration

New York: The Macmillan Company; Macmillan & Co., Ltd., London, 1901. New York: The Macmillan Company; Macmillan & Co., Ltd., London,, 1901. Columbia University Biological Series VII. Octavo (209 × 140 mm). Contemporary blue library binding, titles to spine gilt. Library ink stamp to half title, ink stamp and blind stamp to title, ink stamps to edges of text block. Small chip from margin of page 5 slightly affecting text, contents faintly toned. A very good copy. First edition of the author's uncommon second book, the foundational work in the study of regeneration; this copy with the superb provenance of the Woods Hole Biological Laboratory, where Morgan carried out research every summer. Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866–1945) was a Nobel Prize-winning pioneer of genetics and experimental biology, one of the earliest and most influential scientists to use fruit flies in the study of heredity, and discoverer of the first definitive link between a specific chromosome and an inherited trait. His work on regeneration and its connection to embryology and the overall biology of organisms was also of great significance, with his most outstanding contribution "being his demonstration that parts of the organism which are not subject to injury, such as the abdominal appendages of the hermit crab, will nevertheless regenerate, so that regeneration is not an adaptation evolved to meet the risks of loss of parts of the body", but rather a fundamental aspect of animal physiology with many applications within the body (Nobel Prize biography). This volume bears the library stamps of the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory (now Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), a major biological research organisation with which Morgan was intimately connected throughout his career, beginning with his thesis work on sea spiders carried out during 1889 and 1890. He returned to Woods Hole every summer thereafter, even shipping fruit flies from his laboratory at Columbia, and he served as a trustee of the institute for more than four decades. A wonderful association copy of this fundamental work.
