The Discovery of the Solomon Islands by Alvaro de Mendaña in 1568

Hakluyt Society, London 1901 - Two volumes, octavo, photographic plates, four maps (two folding) in a pocket; some pages loosening; original blue cloth, rubbed, spines sunned and darkened but a reasonable copy. Translated from the original Spanish manuscripts, comprising six separate accounts of the journey, this is the standard scholarly edition of the narrative of the voyage of Mendaña and his associates aboard the Capitana and the Almiranta, in search of habitable lands off the coast of Peru, and their subsequent discovery of the Solomon Islands. This translation took thirty years to complete before being published by the Hakluyt Society, due to careful cross-referencing of material that was continually coming to light during the process.         Archive of Reminiscences of the Civil War in the West and later life in Oregon and Washington State (21 Letters and 2 Manuscripts)

Reminiscences of Greene as recorded in a group of 21 letters, dated 1901 and between 1916-1917 to an old friend, Judge Leander Stillwell of Erie, Kansas; accompanied by two manuscripts by Greene and his calling card as a political candidate in Portland, Oregon, and other places. Various sizes. The 21 letters comprise 75 pages, both typed and holograph, approximately 15,000 words. The two manuscripts, one a typescript, the other in holograph, are 17 pages each comprising approximately 4000 words; the calling card, which measures 2.5" x 4", presents Greene as a candidate for the 1916 Republican nomination for a state assembly seat in Stevenson, Washington - he lost by 24 votes.A rich collection of letters and manuscripts, offering detailed accounts of personal experience in the Civil War in the West, displaying a literary bent. Some pages frayed around the edges, other modest wear and soiling, but overall very good or better. Albert R. Greene (1842-1918) was a soldier with the 9th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War, afterwards he worked as journalist, lecturer, Kansas State Senator, Inspector with the Department of the Interior's General Land Office, and Chief of the Division of Forestry in Washington, D.C. In later life he moved west, living in Stevenson, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, from where most of these letters were written.Several of the letters recount detailed specifics from his Civil War service, including details of battles at Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh) in Tennessee, and of battles at Prairie Grove, Little Rock, and at DuVall's Bluff in Arkansas, including details from notes that he kept during the war. One letter recounts his witnessing of the execution of a deserter from the 22nd Ohio at DuVall's Bluff; he describes crossing a newly built pontoon bridge south of town, and of skirmishing all day on September 8, 1864; capturing rebel prisoners, and being fired upon from the canebrakes as his company floated down river. At Prairie Grove, he reports that the Union forces under Blunt lit hundreds of campfires in the evening to make the Rebels think many reinforcements had arrived, but then withdrew from the hills just as the Confederates under Hinman were muffling their wagon wheels with blankets while withdrawing the other way.Green returned to Pittsburg Landing in later years and spoke with a descendant of the family in whose house General Grant was quartered during the battle. She was a young girl at the time and recounted how calmly Grant ate his breakfast to the sound of cannon fire before riding off to join his troops. In another letter, Green asks for information on the killing of Confederate recruiting officers by a band of Osage Indians south of Cherryvale, Kansas. The correspondence is full of literary discussions mentioning Greene's attempts to get his stories and historical essays published, his testimony in land fraud cases, a story he was writing regarding the opening of Kiowa-Comanche lands to settlement in 1901, and reports on lumber production in the Western states spurred by the requirements of the Allies in World War I. He also describes the mustering of some 60,000 troops under the command of Maj. General Henry Augustus Greene in 1917 and comments on how much better fed and provisioned the troops were then than during his Civil War days, remembering the test for beef in the summer of 1864: "throw it against the side of an army wagon; if it stuck it was for us; if it rolled off on the ground, it was for the officers!"The two manuscripts offer samples of Greene's skills: one is a short history of the rise and fall of Lecompton, the territorial capital of Kansas in the pre-Civil War era and a victim of the conflicts between free-staters and pro-slavery advocates in "Bleeding Kansas"; the other is a memoir of a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars who worked on his father's farm in Illinois. [See Dornbusch Kansas 34 ("Campaigning in the Army of the Frontier"), 35 ("On the battle of Wilson Creek"), and 36 ("What I saw of the Quantrill raid") for three published works on the Civil War written by Greene].The recipient of the material, Judge Stillwell (1843-1934), was also a veteran of the Civil War, fighting in an Illinois regiment and recording his experiences in his memoir, The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War, 1861-1865 (Erie, Kansas, 1920). Stillwell moved to Kansas following the war and had an active legal practice there until retirement. .

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire. Année complète 1901.

Bureaux de la Revue 1901 - - Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1901, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Edition originale. Grand Canyon of Arizona From Hermit Rim Road

American Lithographic Co., New York - Published by the American Lithography Company of New York City in an edition of 2,500 copies, this spectacular print was sold, with the original oil painted by Thomas Moran in l9l2, to the Santa Fe Railway Company, which copyrighted the image the following year. At the time, Moran was the nation's best known landscape painter, noted especially for his depictions of the Far West and its parks and monuments. The Santa Fe Railway was the first to lay a line to the Grand Canyon, in 1901. To promote tourism, Santa Fe officials later had copies of this lithograph framed and distributed to schools, libraries, civic organizations, and railroad customers throughout the country. The present example, in pristine condition, is one of a small stock of prints held until recently by the Santa Fe company. To the great majority of Americans who did not have the resources or daring to travel to the West, Moran provided this image of the country's infinite potential as symbolized by its dramatic, unique landscape. The artist showed American expansion as a fated conclusion, a glorious destiny indelibly written in the literal stone of the country's landscape. Like so many Americans who found such startling significance in the landscape of the American West, Moran was not a native. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1844 from his native England. Beginning as a wood engraver's apprentice in Philadelphia, he produced an extraordinarily broad range of works: designs for wood engravings, large dramatic oil paintings, small quiet watercolors, and delicate etchings. One of the most celebrated artists of the day, Moran was intimately in tune with the spirit of his age, and this, combined with his phenomenal artistic talent, accounts for much of his fame. Moran painted out of genuine passion, and was not simply responding to a commercial opportunity. For this reason he was uniquely able to understand and capture visually the symbolic significance of the American landscape, and his imagery resonated strongly with a populace hungry for views to complement their romantic conceptions of the distant frontier. Yet for all of his nostalgia, Moran was a realist. He recognized that the beauty of the West needed no embellishment, and his portrayals and views of the West presented it as it was. Thomas Moran's pictures of the West resonate perhaps even more strongly today than at the time of their production. The optimism visible in his work echoes with the experience of the remainder of the 20th century, and it is with increasing nostalgia for that time of infinite promise that today's viewers regard the artist's work. Moran's images have grown in appeal, rather than wane, and "The Grand Canyon" represents an opportunity to acquire significant work by an unparalleled artist of the American West.

        [Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing

Oblong octavo. Flexible cloth with 35 photographs mounted rectos only. Some adhesive used to affix the photos has bled through to the images but all are still easily viewable, overall very good. A very faint inscription on the first leaf with the name William Armstrong and apparently dated in October, 1901, but which is otherwise unreadable. Location not obvious but there is an image of a steamboat with "Scranton" and "Lackawanna Railroad" on the side which might indicate Northern Pennsylvania. Virtually all rural or rustic scenes, with about half of them scenes of hunting and fishing: duck shooting, boating with guns, posing with guns, lolling around the campfire, displaying caught fish whilst drinking beer, and so forth. .

REBELLION In PHOTOGRAPHY. Illustrated with Photographs by the Writer. Reprinted from the Overland Monthly August, 1901.

San Francisco: 1901 - 20 b/w reproduced photographic images. Genthe, born in Berlin, emigrated to San Francisco in 1895, where he taught himself the art of photography. Famous for his images of pre-1906 Chinatown, Genthe would later establish himself as a master of portraiture. His subjects would include Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, John D. Rockefeller, Greta Garbo & Isadora Duncan. In this article, written very early in Genthe's career, he presciently declares his admiration for the new camera equipment, which allows for "an unstudied pose and a natural expression." Further, he herein likens photography to art, where the photographer should strive for "the approval of the painter and sculptor." A rare item documenting the artistic philosophy of an acknowledged early 20th C. virtuoso of the photograph. Wrappers soiled. A Very Good copy. Printed dark grey stiff-stock paper wrappers, stapled. 8vo. 10-1/4" x 7". 1st separate printing.         [Photo Album]: Travels to Northern Africa, India, Turkey, Persia, Russia (Azerbaijan), Tunis, Greece, and Western Europe

Oblong quarto. Red half calf and cloth with "Photographs" in gilt on the front board. Erosion of the calf, which is a bit powdery, else sound and very good. A collection of 356 good quality photographs of turn-of-the-century foreign travels. The majority are 3" x 2.25" silver gelatin prints, with a substantial number of prints that are a bit larger, including a few cyanotypes. Condition of the photographs is mostly near fine. Most have been captioned, either in pencil beneath the mount, or on the negative. Most bear the date 1901, a few 1902. The unidentified photographer was an exhaustive shutterbug, and it seems that little that he observed went undocumented. Many of the images are of architecture, but some are of native peoples as well. There are generous selections from several countries including India (Bombay, Agra, Delhi); Egypt (Karnak and other parts of Luxor, Cairo, Thebes); Russia (the Azerbaijan region: wagons, caravans, and Cossacks); Persia (Tehran, soldiers, Persians, more caravans). The Western European shots are primarily of architecture. A nice selection of images, with more than the usual percentage (probably about two-thirds) from "exotic" locales. One interesting element is that mounted in the rear of the album are photographs (contemporaneous with the others) that have been printed from damaged negatives. .

Tonopah Mining Company. July 17 1901 May 8, 1907, Nevada - 240 pp. with 39 lines to a page, Small folio. . . Handwritten minutes of the Tonopah Mining Company beginning with its "Minutes of the first meeting of Incorporation" and copied into the minutes "Certificate of Incorporation" which states the purpose of the company. The first board meeting was held July 17, 1901, in Smyrna, Delaware, and the next in meeting on 25 July, in Philadelphia. The ledgers includes a hand written copy of the agreement by which the Tonopah Mining Company purchased the eight claims which included some of the most famous like "Desert Queen, Burro, Valley View, Silver Top, Buckboard and Mizpah", as named in the ledger. The agreement details the amount, $336.000, and the conditions of the payments and the time periods for transfer of the titles. It also incorporates the "pre incorporation" business discussions and agreements between the purchaser and seller, as well as between the board members to be.The ledger writing details all the discussions, resolutions, agreements, etc. that the company undertook during the period, as well as some Treasurer's reports. It includes many day to day events set out in great detail, regarding staff, technical matters, equipment, etc. A fascinating look into an historic gold and silver Mining Company. written in brown ink on faintly lined paper; rebound to period and style in full brown rough suede leather, tooled in blind, gilt lettered spine label [Attributes: Hard Cover]
