Ueber das Gesetz der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum [AND] Ueber die Elementarquanta der Materie und der Elektricität.

. Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1901. 8vo. pp. 553-563; 564-566 in: Annalen der Physik Vierte Folge, Band 4, Heft 3. Original printed wrappers. Preserved in a fine, recent clamshell box with burgundy spine and marbled boards, and red morocco label with gilt title on the spine.l This issue of the foremost journal of physics of that time contains two major contributions by Nobel-Prize winner Max Planck: "Ueber das Gesetz der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum", and "Ueber die Elementarquanta der Materie und der Elektricität". In the first paper Planck formulated the law of black body radiation. One of the cornerstones of quantum physics. By coincidence, this issue also includes the earliest published paper by Albert Einstein, "Folgerungen aus den Capillaritätserscheinungen." (pp. 513-523). Old stamp on front wrapper, binding broken, a few gatherings and the back wrapper detached. In all a very good and internally clean copy of the original publications in the original wrappers. Very rare in this state. Dibner, 166; DSB XI, 10-12; Weil 1 (for Einstein); PMM, 391..

London, 1901, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fair, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st Edition42 pages with 10 folded patterns (complete). An amiable, goodnatured book about cutting out patterns. For its age the book is in general fair condition. It has been graded so instead of good due to the condition of the cover. The cover is much marked, worn and handled. However, the spine (although worn at the head, foot and body) and binding are secure, strong and sure. The contents are convivial. The frontispage has a previous owner inscription. The inside frontcover has a library (?) stamp. The patterns are in good condition. They have some user folds at the edges, but they are hale and healthy. Codices Graeci et Latini photographice depicti duce Scatone De Vries. Tom. VI. (Wikipedia).         The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments

Glasgow: David, Bryce, & Son, (c. 1901). 876pp. Printed on India paper and illustrated with black & white plates. Bound in full brown leather stamped in blind on the covers and lettered in gilt on the spine, with a pocket inside the rear cover containing a leather-bound magnifying glass. Attached to the rear cover is a metal chain that holds the book to a miniature wood lectern, as was the practice for full-sized Bibles in sixteenth-century English churches. There is a shelf for storage of the Bible under the lectern. On the bottom of the base is a paper label explaining how the Bible came to be chained. The Bible and lectern are housed in the original publisher's cardboard box with a paper label declaring this "the smallest Bible in the world." The label further states that this Bible was produced to commemorate the tercentenary of the authorized version of the English Bible. An advertisement for the miniature chained Bible and lectern is included in the box, the back of which promotes the other miniature Bibles published by Bryce, including the Mite Bible, Burns' Family Bible, Shakespeare's Family Bible, and the Coronation Miniature Bible. The box and advertisement have been expertly repaired, and both show some wear and soiling. The Bible is a trifle shaken, but otherwise, the lectern and Bible, including the chain and magnifying glass, are in fine condition. (Bible 1 7/8 by 1 3/8; 47x33mm; lectern 5 1/2 (height) by 3 1/8; 141x81mm).

        Panoramic bromide photograph of Honolulu

King Brothers, Hawaii 1901 - First edition, oblong folio, approx. 6.25 x 28.5"; very minor creasing to upper left corner, one small chip to upper left corner measuring 1/8 x 5/16", otherwise a beautifully preserved image in double-matte wooden frame.Scarce panoramic photograph taken by Melven Vaniman (1866-1912), using a panoramic camera of his own design, fitted with a Goerz lens of ten inches focus. In order to catch the shot, Vaniman climbed to the top of the tallest mast on the barque Gerard C. Tobey, and lashed himself with the camera and his apparatus to it. There was tremendous wind, the camera- box was nearly a yard long and over a foot wide, and he nearly fell with them as he tried to take the image.Vaniman began his storied career as a panoramic photographer in Hawaii where he worked until 1904, and was known as an adventurer and businessman whose nickname was the Acrobatic Photographer. He shot images from gas balloons, ship masts, tall buildings, and even a home made 30 meter pole, and later became a famous aviator and balloonist. See: British Journal of Photography, Vol. 48, Supplement, May 3, 1902, pp. 33-34; and, A Different Perspective: Vaniman the Acrobatic Photographer, 2007. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Export-Atlas

FREYTAG, Gustav. Export-Atlas für Welthandel und Industrie. 6 pp text. Illustrated with one folding map of the world, 20 maps and 8 charts all done in chromolithography. Oblong folio, 265 x 395 mm, bound in publisher's illustrated blue cloth. Vienna: G. Freytag & Berndt, ND [1901]. |~||~||~||~| An imaginative example of early twentieth-century book design, perhaps inspired by Walker's Statistical Atlas of the United States, published in 1874. The information on World trade is extremely interesting, but it is the design which makes this book far more so. Each of the maps is surrounded by coloured charts which anticipate the work of Otto Neurath in the Vienna of the 1930's. The overall impact of the book design results in the book as an object transcending its subject matter. A rare work with OCLC listing 11 copies, of which only 2 are in the US, 6 are in Germany, 2 in Holland and 1 in France. A fine copy.

The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War, a scarce binding variant with interesting provenance

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1901. Second edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is the second printing of the Silver Library edition of Churchill's first book, notable for being a rare binding variant in superior condition with interesting provenance, including both Churchill's alma mater and the British embassy in Paris. The Story of the Malakand Field Force was based on Churchill's exploits with Sir Bindon Blood's expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. While Churchill had previously applied his pen as a published correspondent, this was his first book-length work and he clearly labored over it: "I have discovered a great power of application which I did not think I possessed. For two months I have worked not less than five hours a day." Publication of the first edition of 1898 was arranged by Churchill's uncle while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Hence later states of the first edition bear errata slips. In part because of the errors in the first edition which so vexed Churchill, the publisher also issued a second edition less than a year after the first in January 1899. This Silver Library edition was the first to incorporate the author's corrections in the text, making this an important and highly collectable edition. Unfortunately, the maroon boards proved highly susceptible to fading and wear, the paper easily browned and became brittle, and the binding often cracked. Here is the second and final printing of the Silver Library edition. Of the only 1,000 copies of this printing, just 337 were recorded as sold, so they are quite scarce. This particular copy is rarer still. Bibliographer Ronal Cohen (Vol. I, A1.3.c, p.22) and Richard Langworth (p.22) note a binding variant, bound in a smooth, medium red cloth distinctly different from the textured maroon cloth common to the Silver Library edition. This variant is slightly smaller than the standard Silver Library binding as well, with slightly trimmed text block, and the spine print and decoration in black instead of gilt. This particular copy of the variant binding differs further, with incorrect date of "1726" remaining on the endpapers, instead of the corrected "1724" date usually present on second printing copies. Moreover, the distinctive swan and ship endpapers have a pronounced red hue, rather than the more tan appearance of typical Silver Library edition endpapers. Condition is very good plus. The binding remains tight, with minor wear to extremities. The spine shows only slight color shift and the faint outline of what may have once been a sticker above the publisher's ship device. The contents are particularly bright and well preserved for a Silver Library edition, with only modest age-toning to the page edges. All maps are present and pristine, as is the frontispiece and tissue guard. This copy also boasts interesting provenance. The title page verso bears a prize certificate from Churchill's Alma Mater, Harrow School, filled out in pencil by hand for the "Summer" term of 1906, and awarded as a "Prize for Good Work sent up to the Head Master" to "W. H. S. Spurrier". On the title page itself is circular ink stamp of the "AMBASSADE BRITANNIQUE PARIS" with the words "SERVICE D'INFORMATION (DOCUMENTATION) within and the numbers "923" inked directly above the stamp. The only other previous ownership marks we find are the words "RESERVE STOCK" stamped in red ink on the first free endpaper and a tiny "Times Book Club" of London sticker affixed to the lower rear pastedown. A singular copy of a collectible edition. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A1.3.c, Woods/ICS A1(ba.2), Langworth p.22.
