Black Jack Ketchum Hanging Issue of the Arizona Gazette Newspaper and Two Postcards

Phoenix. Very Good. 1901. Newspaper. Three items related to the hanging of train robber Black Jack Ketchum, an outlaw who operated in New Mexico and Arizona. The first item is a complete issue of the April 27, 1901 issue of the Phoenix newspaper The Arizona Gazette, with the front page reporting the hanging that occurred the day before in Clayton, New Mexico, including the fact that "The rope broke and his head was jerked off." Issue is toned, with chips and holes where it was bound; pages are separated. 21" x 14 1/2". The other two items are divided back silver gelatin postcards from the early 1900s depicting the event, two famous images in very good condition, each 3 1/2" x 5". One is of Ketchum on the gallows, "The Hanging of 'Black Jack' the Outlaw", and the other is "Body of 'Black Jack' after the Hanging. Showing head snapped off," with two men squatting over the body and hooded head. Murderer and train robber Thomas E. "Black Jack" Ketchum was caught on April 17, 1899, the day after he was seriously wounded trying to rob a train by himself. His injuries resulted in the amputation of his arm while in jail. He was hung on April 26, 1901. The famous and extra gruesome hanging was apparently a mistake of the drop being too great for a man of Ketchum's weight. ; B&W Photographs .

A TRIP TO MARS: AN "AWFUL VENTURE." A CURIOUS MESSAGE. BEING A COPY OF A CIRCULAR ADDRESSED TO THE INHABITANTS OF THIS WORLD, BY MR. H[OMO] V. MUNDO [pseudonym], THE LATE VISITOR TO THE PLANET MARS. Reprinted from the Wellington A1 and New Zealand Tit-Bits. [By] J. M. T., Auckland .

Wilson and Horton, Printers, Auckland 1901 - Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-49 [50: blank], original red wrappers printed in gold, stapled. Second edition, enlarged, the first to print "A Trip to Mars." Pages [5]-24 comprise "A Trip to Mars." The remainder of the book is devoted to "A Song of Auckland and Other Verses." While the story of the trip to Mars is fairly short (20 pages), it is densely packed with ideas and imagination; an early notion of a black hole or something like it, travel through space by explosive atoms and antigravity. Mars is a utopian world. The Martians live by the golden rule and were either without original sin or eradicated it (this is not quite clear). When the astronaut from Earth lands on Mars he is fumigated to kill "sin-germs." The author's premise appears to be that humans have the technology and tools to create a paradise on Earth. Mankind's advance to perfection "would have been infinitely greater if [religion's] advocates and professors had proved unanimously true and faithful to their cause." There is nothing standing in the way of creating a utopian world except mankind's lack of a universal "faithful, heroic, and disinterested religion." "A science fiction story in the style of a newspaper report which describes how the protagonist was launched Verne-wise from a gun into space and, in his spacecraft, arrived on a scientifically advanced Mars, whose achievements include telepathy and easy access by means of airships to their two small moons, which are used as resorts. A piece which compresses more ideas within its small dimensions than do many full-length contemporaries." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 210. Like the Locke copy, the front wrapper of this copy states "Second Edition." This refers to prior publication of "A Song of Auckland," and not this enlarged edition with the author's "A Trip to Mars" (which is first published here in book form). Locke, Voyages in Space (2011) V-632. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992), Bleiler (1948; 1978), Tuck, or the Day supplements. Not in Blackford, et. al., Strange Constellations: A History of Australian Science Fiction or Larnach, Materials Towards a Checklist of Australian Fantasy to 1937. Some creasing and soiling to covers, some light scattered foxing to text, else a very good copy. Rare. Among the earliest interplanetary stories published in New Zealand. Imagens captam os seguintes panoramas: 1. Entrada da Quinta; 2. Araucárias e topiárias do jardim; 3. Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro (Jardins Blandy). Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro (Blandy"s Gardens) The Quinta dates back to the early 19th Century when the first Count of Carvalhal purchased the land and began the initial planting of shrubs and trees. The gardens have been further enriched by the Blandy family who acquired the property just over a century ago. During five decades, Mrs Mildred Blandy, mother of the present owner, dedicated herself to the supervision of every bed, border, walk and path. We know that on this date (1901) John Burden Blandy gave a banquet (in the form of picnic) to the King Dom Carlos and Queen Dona Maria Amelia, his entourage, local residents and British community members at the Casa Velha. The King arrived at horseback and the Queen in a carriage. There was a tennis match between Dom Carlos and John Ernest Blandy. Location/localizacao: SDC vitrine

[Burne-Jones, Georgiana] ALS to Robert Catterson-Smith

3pp on folded ooctavo stationary, printed, "Rottingdean, Sussex." Nov: 30. 1901. In original postmarked and hand-addressed envelope. Arranging times to visit, with a touching ending regarding loneliness, to Robert Catterson-Smith, important Kelmscott Press artist, best known for redrawing all of the Burne-Jones' drawings for the Kelmscott "Chaucer." "Dear Mr. Catterson Smith, Forgive delay in answering your kind note, but I had to calculate engagements before writing. Sunday the 9th of December will suit me well I find, and I shall look forward to seeing you and discussing over plans with great pleasure - it is very kind of you to come down. I will look out trains for you & send you word about them, for this Sunday ones are tiresome & the omnibus service worse. It is possible that Mr. Walker may be coming here the day before (Saturday) to talk illustrations with me, and to stay the night. Would it be agreeable & possible to you to come down with him and also sleep here? In that case we could get through our talk partly all together & partly tete a tete, and you would have a companion both coming & returning. The accounts I hear of Mr. Mackails lecture and of the spirit that filled the room that Sunday evening, touch me deeply and are some comfort at this time when I find myself so much alone. Yes it must be a "religion" or it will do nothing. In hope then, of seeing you either on the 8th or 9th Dec., believe me, most truly yours (signed) G. Burne-Jones."

Musgrave Francis (d. 1931, Chairman of Addenbrooke's Hospital General Committee 1923-1931; presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'T. Musgrave Francis with the good wishes of The Author?).First edition. Born in England to an aristocratic French father and an English mother, de Satgé (1836-1906) was educated at Rugby School. In 1853 he embarked in Melbourne and was appointed a Clerk in the Goldfields' Commission, through the good offices of Charles La Trobe. Following a position as a parliamentary clerk, de Satgé decided to gain pastoral experience by joining his brother at cattle stations on the Darling Downs, and this marked the beginning of a successful career in the booming livestock businesses of the continent; he invested in a series of cattle stations, which were then developed and sold on very profitably. De Satgé also pursued a political career, and '[i]n the Queensland Legislative Assembly [he] had represented Clermont in 1869-70 and 1870-72, Normanby in 1873-77 and Mitchell in 1881-82. First elected as a squatters' delegate to pass the 1869 pastoral leases bill, his superior social position, his comprehensive knowledge of the problems of the central and western Queensland squatters and his successful role as a Clermont "roads and bridges" politician made him an effective pastoral leader. "These", as he later nostalgically asserted, were "the good old days when squatting constituencies returned representatives interested in the pursuit instead of Radicals ready to wage war against capital"' (ADB). In 1882 de Satgé retired to England, and, apart from visits to Australia in 1883, 1888 and 1893 to inspect his properties, he remained in Britain and wrote the autobiographical Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter, which spans thirty years and describes the growth for the country from a time when 'the goldfields [were] in full swing [and] [t]he Australian colonies did not carry [.] one-fifth of their present population. Railways were only commencing to be thought of; agriculture and its kindred industries were confined to the wants of the growing population; fencing for pastoral purposes was unknown; Victorian vineyards were still unplanted' (p. 1) to the late nineteenth century. The ADB comments that de Satgé's 'valuable and racy reminiscences, Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter [.] reveal him as an able and shrewd pastoralist with much practical and financial skill'.
