Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter.

London: Hurst and Blackett, Limited, 1901. - 8vo (213 x 143mm), pp. [10], 416, [4 (advertisements)]; half-tone portrait frontispiece, retaining tissue guard, 34 plates included in the pagination, and 2 colour-printed folding lithographic maps by Stanford; a few light spots on first and last ll. and fore-edges; original green cloth, upper board and spine lettered in gilt; spine slightly leant, a few light marks, offsetting on endpapers, nonetheless a very good, clean copy; provenance: T. Musgrave Francis (d. 1931, Chairman of Addenbrooke's Hospital General Committee 1923-1931; presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'T. Musgrave Francis with the good wishes of The Author?).First edition. Born in England to an aristocratic French father and an English mother, de Satgé (1836-1906) was educated at Rugby School. In 1853 he embarked in Melbourne and was appointed a Clerk in the Goldfields' Commission, through the good offices of Charles La Trobe. Following a position as a parliamentary clerk, de Satgé decided to gain pastoral experience by joining his brother at cattle stations on the Darling Downs, and this marked the beginning of a successful career in the booming livestock businesses of the continent; he invested in a series of cattle stations, which were then developed and sold on very profitably. De Satgé also pursued a political career, and '[i]n the Queensland Legislative Assembly [he] had represented Clermont in 1869-70 and 1870-72, Normanby in 1873-77 and Mitchell in 1881-82. First elected as a squatters' delegate to pass the 1869 pastoral leases bill, his superior social position, his comprehensive knowledge of the problems of the central and western Queensland squatters and his successful role as a Clermont "roads and bridges" politician made him an effective pastoral leader. "These", as he later nostalgically asserted, were "the good old days when squatting constituencies returned representatives interested in the pursuit instead of Radicals ready to wage war against capital"' (ADB). In 1882 de Satgé retired to England, and, apart from visits to Australia in 1883, 1888 and 1893 to inspect his properties, he remained in Britain and wrote the autobiographical Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter, which spans thirty years and describes the growth for the country from a time when 'the goldfields [were] in full swing [and] [t]he Australian colonies did not carry [.] one-fifth of their present population. Railways were only commencing to be thought of; agriculture and its kindred industries were confined to the wants of the growing population; fencing for pastoral purposes was unknown; Victorian vineyards were still unplanted' (p. 1) to the late nineteenth century. The ADB comments that de Satgé's 'valuable and racy reminiscences, Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter [.] reveal him as an able and shrewd pastoralist with much practical and financial skill'. "Mucha's designs, like Grasset's, are sometimes narrative, sometimes decorative, but his human figures are more elegant and graceful than his predecessor's, and his decorations are Byzantine and Czech in style rather than Gothic. Though his ornaments are replete with intricate symbolism, he doesn't fail to do full justice to the human interest of this tale of the refined and melancholy Jaufre who at last attains the love of the 'distant princess' of his dreams.... John Lewis... calls Mucha's complex creation the most representative of all Art Nouveau books. It is also among the most attractive." ... Manuscript minute book for the Reading Rifle Club, established in 1900, containing all particulars of its growing membership, annual shooting programs and competitions, rules and regulations, financial statements, and the like, recorded in various hands over the years and containing several original signatures. A few of the club's printed documents, some manuscript letters from members, and newspaper clippings are tipped in. Together with a printed pocketsize 9 page handbook of the club's rules. 8vo. 218 pages on watermarked lined paper. Half calf over dark teal cloth boards titled in gilt to spine, original marbled endpapers, bookbinder's label to front pastedown. Endpapers reinforced at seam, otherwise in very good condition, a most interesting volume dealing with shooting as a sanctioned pastime. A fine example of a pre-war shooting club, nineteenth century firearms etiquette, and freedom to enjoy skilled gunnery competition. Gaining popularity and new members every year from its opening season, the Reading Rifle Club appears to have been most diligently managed, every one of its meetings being recorded in this manuscript minute book. Entries are wide-ranging in subject matter, some topics up for discussion being entrance fees and prizes, monthly competitions, an annual challenge cup, subscriptions, nominations and elections for leadership and administrative posts, expenses and receipts, ammunition purchases, firearms kept onsite, new members, annual shooting programs and competitions, rules and protocol, scoring, handicapping, dividing competitors into classes, the daily pay rate for the range warden, special use of the firing range, and so forth. Meetings were very regular from the turn of the century until 1914, then reduced rather abruptly owing to the Great War, during which time most of the members would have been in service, putting their shooting skills to practical use. Many captains are named as members, being of the British Army or the Royal Navy, many surely being attached to the pre-First World War Berkshire Yeomanry. Further research may find some notable persons. Being a legitimate and accredited pastime promoting honest and skilful competition, the member roll also included reverends. [In 2009 the National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom celebrated its 150th Anniversary. Today the association is primarily concerned with civilian full-bore target rifle shooting, although retaining its military heritage and close links with the British Armed Forces. Similarly, the Reading Rifle Club would have attracted Captains and Colonels of the Royal Armed Forces.] Incidences of special interest include experimentation with a patent target machine, a disconcerting matter of irregular entries on a score card, possible embezzlement of subscription money, a shooter having an epileptic seizure, and a proposal for establishing a summer camp at Clacton-on-Sea together with the Colchester Rifle Club. We also find occasional mention of Churn Camp, which was at the time in Berkshire, and another popular place for men of the Berkshire Yeomanry. Indeed a pastime requiring fastidious safety monitoring and honorable sportsmanship, frequent mention is made of the governing body of full bore rifle and pistol shooting sports, the National Rifle Association (NRA), which had been founded only forty years earlier in 1859. The Reading Rifle Club was affiliated to it. [The National Rifle Association was based at Putney Heath & Wimbledon Common, in south-west London, 12 years before its better known American cousin.] . Very Good.

Its colour is so equisite and dainty; its composition and arrangement so consummately learned, whether as to perspective, linear and aerial, tone and atmosphere, and reflected lights; and the drawings of the figures and the painting of the flesh so admirable that this picture may be pronounced in some qualities superior to, or more attractive than anything the master has producted before.' Prijs: € 3.150,- (incl. lijst).

[in Kopie dabei].
