[Alaskan Photographica]
[Nome, Juneau, and other locations in Alaska, 1900. Twenty-four tipped-in photographs, with printed captions, each photograph approximately 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Contemporary brown wrappers. Some scuffing to spine. Minor fading to images. Very good. An excellent collection of vernacular photographs of Alaska around the turn of the 20th century, with printed captions beneath the images containing valuable information for identification of the images. The majority of the album captures images of Nome when it was a thriving boom town following shortly after the 1898 discovery of gold. One of the captions covering three of the photographs reads, "Mining on the Beach. Nome, Alaska." Other views include Nome from a distance, showing the hundreds of tents housing the prospectors; the house in Nome belonging to one of the album organizer's friends; sled dog teams delivering water; six views taken on the Fourth of July, including a parade of sled dogs passing in front of Wyatt Earp's Dexter Saloon, draped in patriotic ribbons; the Hunter Saloon, titled "the finest in Nome," and Northern Saloon, similarly decorated for Independence Day; the J.F. Giese Hardware Store, occupying the "finest building in Nome;" five views of Juneau, including a street scene, a brewery housed in the first church in Juneau, and an enormous canoe named the "Whalekiller"; totem poles in Wrangle, Ak.; and the Muir Glacier near Skagway. Photographs from the time period near the Alaskan Gold Rush are rare, especially in an album as well-organized and well-identified as this one.

The Plans were prepared in 1900 for Heywood Sumner, Esq., a successor in ownership, for the addition of a Studio to the house. Thus, the Plans were prepared soon after his departure and show the house as it existed when Stevenson owned it, together with the proposed Studio addition. A "wedding present" from Stevenson's father to Stevenson and his wife, Fanny, four years after their marriage -- most likely the father's attempt to keep his peripatetic son near to him in his last years -- Stevenson came to ownership of it upon his father's death in 1887. [No place: no publisher, 1900. Near Fine. Broadside printed in color on cloth, possibly a chromoxylographic process. Measuring 22.5" x 22.5". Very slight wear at extremities, faint old folds (largely now flattened out), slight age-wear but still near fine. The cloth is lightly tipped at the top onto foam core backing. Artist's depiction of two black boys, one with a shine box, along with one white boy, play craps for pennies on the sidewalk, to their evident delight. No place of publication, but clearly American and possibly from New York; no publication information, and no obvious artist's mark, what must certainly be a rare survivor. We could find no other copy of this image.

Möller, Georg (1876 Caracas - 1921 Uppsala):
Berlin, Handschrift, wohl 1900. 129 Seiten, und Texte. 4°. Schlichter Leineneinband der Zeit. Liniertes Papier (5 mm). [Click Below for Full Description]

LOS ANGELES)
Pacific Electric Railway [ca. 1900], Los Angeles. Grouping of six original Trolley Trip pins. Each is in color, approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter and all are in very good to excellent condition. Trolly Trips include: 2 of the same Old Mission but one is made by L.A. Badge Mfg Co. 342 S. Broadway and one is made by the American Art Worsk in Coshocton, OH, Orange Empire with no mfg card on back, Triangle made by L.A. Badge on Broadway, Tilton`s made by Whitehead & Hoag, Newark, NJ, and a general Pacific Electric made by L.A. Badge & Mfg Co. 342 S. Broadway. While the first streetcar system in Los Angeles dates back to 1874, the Pacific Electric Railway Co. was established by Henry Huntington in 1901 when he took over several other smaller streetcar lines in the L.A. area. Huntington took over control of the LA. Consolidated Electric Railway with his uncle (president of the Southern Pacific Railroad) and a group of investors and the "Red Cars" were born. After what was called the "Great Merger" in 1911, Southern Pacific Railroad bought out most of Huntington's railways. According to a University of Southern California article titled "The Red Cars of Los Angeles", at its peak the Pacific Electric Railway was huge: 1,150 miles of track covering four counties and 900 cars. 1944 marked the highest ridership: over 109 million passengers. Red Car trolleys are recognizable to this day and have been captured forever in America's memory due to the film industry boom in Southern California.

UNIDENTIFIED
Massachusetts: (1900). 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is a very interesting original journal written by an unidentified clock maker from Massachusetts. It has about 70 pages of handwritten notes, drawings, newspaper clippings, and details of collectors and manufacturers, all dealing with different aspects of clock making. The materials cover several decades, the earliest of the entries probably made in the early 1900s: there is a loose leaf bearing a watermark: Crane's All Linen, with a crane on shield and date 1881, some of the clippings are dated 1930s and 1950s. Few entries are related to history of clock making, the first entry is notes to the lecture on rope making: "I have taken for my subject this evening - Rope - and will try and explain as best as I can some of the fibres of which it is made and the different ways in which it is made up". Many entries contain instructions, measurements, and drawings of timepieces made by noted 18th and 19th century American clock makers, mostly from Massachusetts, including Joseph H. Eastman, Simeon Crane, Simon Willard, Edward Howard, and Elnathan Taber, there are measurements and notes for Simon Willard tall clock, Waltham banjo clock collection, Elnathan Taber hall clock, Walter Durfee chime, a shelf clock by Herman Clark, and many other. Pages 46 - 47 contain notes and measurements for a clock made by the author himself with explanations how to calculate pitch diameter and make pinion cutter. The journal also provides information about producers of small tools, clock parts, materials used for clock and watch making, as we … [Click Below for Full Description]

Siegfried Wagner [Richard Wagner]
Bayreuth: N/A, 1900 Book. Very Good. No Binding. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Seven bar musical manuscript by Siegfried Wagner taken from the overture of his best known opera, Der Bärenhäuter - The Bearskin Man - scored for first and second violins, viola and cello. Written in black ink on a full size piece of manuscript paper (27x10cm) the composer has added dynamic markings 'Ruhig Bewegt' - moving gently - and signed the extract in full with the title of the work. Wagner chose a gently lyrical section from the middle of the overture to transcribe for what was no doubt a gift, possibly to Fedor Mamroth (see below). Accompanying the manuscript is the composer's annotated calling card (3.8x7.6cm) which is printed with the words: 'Siegfried Wagner - Bayreuth - Wahnfried' and annotated in his hand with affectionate greetings, four words on the recto of the card and four on the verso: 'mit ergebenen gruss, hoffeur...' Very slight browning to the card stock but otherwise a very good example found here with a postcard from 1900 which Wagner sent to Fedor Mamroth of the 'Frankfurter Zeitung' newspaper. Below a picture of Montreux Wagner has written two lines to Mamroth, promising to see him in October and ending with a joke about letting loose his bear - the bear which is central to the idea of his opera Der Bärenhäuter, based on a story by the brothers Grimm. The son of Richard and Cosima Wagner and a grandson of Franz Liszt through his mother's side, Siegfried Wagner was born in 1869, became himself a prolific opera composer though more influenced by the work of Humperdinck … [Click Below for Full Description]

AL-BUKHARI, ABU 'ABDALLAH B. ISMAIL.
Al-Matba'a al-Othmaniyya, Cairo, 1900. Volume I: 229 pp., [2 contents], 208 pp. / Volume II: 201 pp., [2 contents], 191 pp., modern cloth, paper slightly browned, set in good condition, published at Al-Matba’a al-Othmaniyya, Cairo, 1318 A. H./ 1900. Sahih al-Bukhari, is one of the six canonical hadith collections (Al-Kutub Al-Sittah) of Islam. These prophetic traditions, or hadith, were collected by Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, after being transmitted orally for generations. Sunni Muslims view this as one of the three most trusted collections of hadith along with Sahih Muslim and al-Muwatta. In some circles, it is considered the most authentic book after the Qur'an. The actual title of the book commonly referred to as Sahih al-Bukhari, according to Ibn al-Salah, is: al-Jaami’ al-Sahih al-Musnad al-Mukhtasar min Umur Rasool Allah wa sunanihi wa Ayyamihi. A word for word translation is: The Abridged Collection of Authentic Hadith with Connected Chains regarding Matters Pertaining to the Prophet, His practices and His Times. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani mentioned the same title replacing the word umur, matters, with hadith. Several detailed commentaries, translations by leading scholar on this collection have been written, including this work. Size: 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A photo engraved copper plate 31,5 x 43,5cm + image printed from the plate 27 x 41 cm (the wole sheet 43 x 53 cm).The copper plate has a rust damage in the upper right corner and a few minor damages in other places. The paper image with a corresponding damage to the upper left corner and a couple of creases to the margins. Here we have a recently discovered photogravure plate depicting Stockholm in the early 1800. A newly printed image from the plate is also supplied. The printing plate was manufactured around the year 1900, after a famous view in the work "Svenska Vuer" published in the early 1800s. The present plate is reduced in size compared to the original. Reproduction of art by photoengraving had its breakthrough in the 1880s. and was fully developed by the turn of the century. The method was acctually first pioneered by Fox Talbot in the 1850s. Basically, a photograph of the painting is transferred to an aquatinted and light sensitized copper plate by appplying light through a photo positive. The plate is then etched whereafter you can print copies from the plate. The aquatint photogravure was replaced by gravure in the early 20th. century. Now using a ready made grid instead of the regular aquatinting process. Sometimes gravures was made using an irregular grain screen to emulate the regular aquatint grains in a photogravure. It is hard to tell if the present plate is a regular aquatint photogravure or a gravure with an irregular grain screen. The plate has been varnished to avoid oxidation. Surviving printing plates are … [Click Below for Full Description]
