Anthony, Susan B.
Rochester, New York: Susan B. Anthony, 1900. Original Signature. Paper. Clipped card approx. 4.5" x 3 inches. Inscription reads "Perfect equality of rights for women - civil and political - should be the cry for everyone. Your sincerely Susan B. Anthony 17 Madison Street Rochester N.Y. July 1, 1900." Anthony often used the same phrase "Perfect equality of rights for women - civil and political" in many of her speeches and inscriptions. In a letter addressed to future President James Garfield September 9, 1880 Anthony wrote "I know, if you had in your letter of acceptance, or in your New York speech, declared yourself in favor of "perfect equality of rights - civil and political, you would have touched an electric spark which would have fired the hearts of the women of the entire nation, and made the triumph of the Republican party more grand and glorious than any it ever has seen." The additional phrase inscribed on this card - "should be the cry for everyone" is a variation that was not located in a search of her writings. Very good. Item #12804 Susan B. Anthony, 1820-1906, was a Quaker, social reformer, member of the American Anti-slavery Society, involved in the Temperance movement, and a women's rights advocate.

HOPKINS, Pauline E.
The Colored Co-operative Publishing Company, 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 402pp., illustrated, with frontispiece. An overall nice and clean ex-library copy with some markings, including a stamp to the front paste-down, cancelled call number on the contents page, and mild evidence of pocket removal to the rear paste-down. Binding a touch shaken, with partial exposure of the rear netting at the inner hinge. Despite its flaws, really a nice, presentable example in the publisher's red binding (there is at least one variant - in green - but we are unaware of any priority). On balance, a very good copy. Mild bumps to two cornersand the spine design and gilt remain about 90% bright. While known to libraries, this novel of black life in America in the aftermath of the Civil War, written by an African-American woman, is uncommon the trade, particularly in this condition. Despite its irksome library markings, a rather nice and unrestored example of this rare and important work of African-American fiction. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition]

My Comic Painting Book, early 1900's, exact date unknown. This soft cover delightful book more than likely was published circa 1902. It measures 9" x 5 5/8". The first page where in he gives advice to little painters is so adorable at the very end he says, "do not suck the brush, and always clean it before using it for second color."! 20 pages. Every other page is a full color page which gives the young artist instruction and ideas as to what colors they may use to paint the art on the other page. I note to the cover an old bend, edge wear, rub marks, some spotting. To the back of the book I note a tear which is photographed for your perusal. I note interior has simply darkened from age. In researching this book I found a couple other of his books with comic animals but I could not find an example of this exact book. Cover right hand corner is marked No. 5017. There is one page where the cats are breaking a popper that has red marks on it and in the corner by the cats foot it does say Louis Wain. Due to what is presumed rarity it is priced accordingly. Please do not hesitate to make a fair offer!! I'm listing quite a few outstanding books from this collection this month! Combine wins and save on shipping! Conrad, Joseph
William Blackwood and Sons, 1900. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Duodecimo size, 451 pp. Very Good. Perhaps Joseph Conrad's (1857-1924) best-known work, "Lord Jim" deals with themes of redemption and guilt through the story of a sailor who abandons his ship and its passengers to save his own life; the book is ranked by many as one of the greatest English-language novels of the twentieth century. The story is narrated by Captain Charles Marlow, a recurring character in Conrad's books who also narrates "Heart of Darkness"; here he takes a more active role in the story, and the core of the novel is often thought to reside in Marlow's interpretation of the events of Jim's life. This volume is the first edition, first printing of Conrad's book, and contains all first issue points as stated below. ___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, decorations and lettering in black on front board, decorations in black and gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and top edges rough cut; duodecimo size (7.5" by 5.5"), pagination: [i-vi] [1] 2-451. Exhibits all first issue points: (i), p. 77, line 5, 'anyrate' printed as one word; (ii), p. 226, 7 lines from bottom, 'keep' is missing after 'can' and 'cure' should be 'cured'; (iii), p. 319, 'his' in the last line is printed low and not aligned with the other words. ___CONDITION: Overall in very good condition, with straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is entirely free of prior owner markings; boards have some light soiling, the book has had professional restoration work done to front board and the hea … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, 1900. A remarkable Raphael Tuck production with 36 chromolithographed figures, numbered 1-19 and 1a - 17a. The 8 chromolithographed pages fold accordion style, and the figures, generally housed in the pocket at the rear fit into correspondingly numbered spaces. "A variety of scenes, however, can be formed, and unending pleasure provided, by placing the figures in innumerable positions". The text of the stories is printed on the verso of the panoramas. Two of the pieces have been mended -- the rabbit (#4) and the woman with spoon (#6a). Two have been mended with parts replaced in facsimile -- the man with ax (#18) and the duck (#19). The flap to the rear pocket has been mended as well. With 36 cut-out figure, instead of the more usual 16, this is one of the more elaborate of the Father Tuck's Panorama series. Very Good binding.

Stevenson, Robert Louis
New York: R H Russell (1900). Blue pictorial paper over boards stamped in navy and pink, extremities worn through, 3/4" missing from base of spine, clean interior. A beautiful edition of Stevenson's classic, finely printed on thick glossy paper including fabulous line art, monochromatic and color artwork. Mars and Squire met at the Cincinnati Art Academy in Ohio and would remain partners in work and life, moving from Ohio to NYC to France and Provincetown MA and eventually back to France where they both died in the mid-1950s. While living in France they became friends with Gertrude Stein and were part of her salon. Mars and Squire also developed the printing technique commonly referred to as the Provincetown Print (see entry in GLBTQ dot com). We have had another copy of this book bound in green paper stamped in pink and green but that copy omits the "To Allison Cunningham..." poem and the order of "North-West Passage" poems differs, also the 1/2 title, title and copyright pages differ in text placement. HOPKINS, Pauline E.
The Colored Co-operative Publishing Company, Boston, 1900. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Prescott, Arizona: 1900. Condition: Very Good. Prescott, Arizona. Very Good. 1900. Newspaper. A special issue of the early Arizona Territory newspaper the Arizona Journal-Miner, the first "Temporary Daily Edition" issued after the devastating fire that destroyed downtown Prescott on July 14, 1900. The fire started in the new Scopel Hotel and spread quickly due to the unfortunate circumstance of the one downtown water pump being disconnected for repairs. The newspaper is a one-sheet folded into four pages, with a few holes along the fold and penciled writing on the front page about the significance of the issue. Most of the news deals with the comings and goings of residents and the plans of the newspaper, which was temporarily printing on a small job printing plant and seeking a space large enough for its machinery. The last page also has a notice of livestock assessment increases and ads for local businesses. A rare memento of the historic Prescott fire, with only five records of any 1900 Journal-Miner issues on OCLC.; 12" x 7 3/4"; 4 pp.

Condition: Very Good +. Uncommon photo album of St. Augustine, Florida, c. 1900. Billed as the oldest city in the United States (or, more accurately, "the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the U.S."), St. Augustine is obviously rich in history and this album includes a number of its most historic spots, such as: "Old City Gate", "The Sea Wall", "Fort Marion". "Hotel Ponce de Leon", "Hotel Alcazar", "St. George Street and Old House" and "Old Slave Market", etc. The printed photos are all crisp and bright and have white-lettered captions. And the ribbon-tied, olive-green covers (with their decorative flourishes) have held up nicely but show light offsetting along the edges. Oblong quarto, a wonderful celebration of "old" St. Augustine.
